Eight months after my father died, I saw some letters on top of my mother’s coffee table. They were tied with a silk ribbon and addressed to her decades ago in my father’s neat handwriting. I couldn’t imagine my serious father ever writing anything like love letters.
“Would you like me to read them to you?” Mom asked with a hint of a smile.
The letters were written in 1974 over the course of a month when my father traveled to Italy to care for his beloved, sick mother, leaving his wife and me, their newborn daughter, behind in Toronto, the city my parents called home after immigrating to Canada from Italy in 1956.
Growing up, my father was my hero and protector, but he was also a man of few words, part of a generation of immigrant men who worked hard for a better life.
I sat back while my mother read his letters to me, and thought, “Who is this guy?” My father used endearing terms I had never heard him say. He referred to my mother as “my dearesr” and “my companion” who was always in his thoughts. In each letter, he enclosed a Canadian one-dollar bill for me and declared, “You and your mother are my life.”
As children, we assume we know everything about our parents. But, sometimes, we find out that they were and are people with various facets.
My father was proud and stubborn, and he married a woman who was his equal in that regard. During their 58-year marriage, their stubbornness often led to conflict. So it was bittersweet to hear my father’s youthful sentiments read aloud by my elderly mother with a wistful (留恋的) tone. I knew she was thinking about what could have been and what had been once upon a time. After she finished reading the letters, I held them in my hands and examined them like they were fossils. Although a man I knew as economical with his thoughts, he had filled the front and back of several pages.
These letters are only part of their correspondence. My mother wrote back to my father. One day she will read those letters to me, she’s assured me. And just as with my father, they might help me discover another dimension of a parent I never knew before.

Time and time again, I hear someone ask why anyone would want to keep an “ugly” building or a building that is dirty and clearly in need of work. I think you could say we preservationists (文物保护者) look at buildings through a different angle — an angle that can see the swan in the ugly duck, the story in the simple lines, the book behind the cover.
Take the Queen Emma Building for example. While people may remember that building being named as one of the ugliest buildings in town, the angle from which a preservationist will view the building is that it is uniquely constructed with an artistical brise-soleil (遮阳板) to block the sun. The designer used standard concrete bricks to form a decorative wall. Unfortunately, the brise-soleil was removed in 2011, making the building look like many of the contemporary buildings in town.
Sometimes people remember a beautiful site that was replaced by a “horrid” piece of architecture and can’t get over their anger, even when that building becomes an important part of our story. This is particularly true in San Francisco where many preservationists themselves dislike anything newer than the Victorian era. Yes, it was a tragedy that many failed to appreciate the Victorian buildings and let many get torn down several decades ago, but those losses also tell another important story. It tells the story of the 1950s and 1960s when there was hope for a more equal society with inexpensive housing for the working class. Should that history be wiped from our memories?
Preservation is not just about keeping pretty, well-kept buildings, but about conveying parts of our history —not just the history of huge events, but the story of how everyone used to go to a certain corner market. Our history cannot be told only in buildings that meet someone’s criteria of beauty; sometimes our history is painful, but no less important.
46.How do preservationists see buildings?
A.They focus on their value rather than appearance.
B.They pay great attention to ancient buildings.
C.They are devoted to repairing famous buildings.
D.They prefer ugly buildings to beautiful ones.
47.What does the author think of removing the brise-soleil of the Queen Emma Building?
A.It’s confusing. B.It’s pleasing.
C.It’s regrettable. D.It’s unbelievable.
48.Why were many Victorian buildings in San Francisco torn down?
A.To wipe the history of the Victorian era.
B.To make land available for cheap housing.
C.To work off the deep anger of the working class.
D.To restore the architecture before the Victorian era.
49.What is the author’s intention of writing this passage?
A.To introduce some buildings with historical value.
B.To explain the reason why architects make ugly buildings.
C.To praise the work of preservationists
D.To stress the importance of preserving ugly buildings.
50.Where does the text probably come from?
A.A culture paper. B.A science book.
C.An environment report. D.A travel magazine.
D
Microplastic pollution has been detected in human blood for the first time, with scientists finding the tiny particles(微粒) in almost 80% of the people tested. The discovery shows the particles can travel around the body and may live in organs.
The impact on health is as yet unknown. But researchers are concerned as microplastics cause damage to human cells in the laboratory and air pollution particles are already known to enter the body and cause millions of early deaths a year.
Huge amounts of plastic waste are left in the environment and microplastics now pollute the entire planet, from the top of Mount Everest to the deepest oceans. People were already known to consume the tiny particles via food and water as well as breathing them in, and they have been found in the faeces (排泄物) of babies and adults.
The scientists analysed blood samples from 22 healthy adults and found plastic particles in 17. Half the samples contained PET plastic, which is commonly used in drinks bottles, while a third contained polystyrene, used for packaging food and other products. A quarter of the blood samples contained polyethylene, from which plastic carrier bags are made.
“Our study is the first indication that we have polymer particles(聚合物颗粒) in our blood — it’s a breakthrough result,” said Prof Dick Vethaak, an expert at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands. “But we have to extend the research and increase the sample sizes, the number of polymers assessed, etc.” Further studies by a number of groups are already under way, he said.
“It is certainly reasonable to be concerned,” Vethaak said. “The particles are there and are transported throughout the body.” He said previous work had shown that microplastics were 10 times higher in the faeces of babies compared with adults and that babies fed with
plastic bottles are taking millions of microplastic particles a day.
Vethaak acknowledged that the amount and type of plastic varied considerably between the blood samples. “But this is a pioneering study,” he said, with more work now needed. He said the differences might reflect short-term exposure before the blood samples were taken, such as drinking from a plastic-lined coffee cup, or wearing a plastic face mask.
“The big question is what is happening in our body?” Vethaak said. “Are the particles retained in the body? Are they transported to certain organs, such as getting past the blood-brain barrier? And are these levels sufficiently high to cause disease? We urgently need to fund further research so we can find out.”
51.What could be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A.Air Pollution particles can cause death eventually.
B.Microplastics can be deadly to humans.
C.There is no evidence that microplastics harm human cells.
D.Microplastics can travel throughout body and damage organs.
52.What can we learn about microplastics from Paragraph 4?
A.They are found in most people.
B.Polyethylene found in blood samples might be taken from drinks bottles.
C.A quarter of the blood samples contained PET particles.
D.Half of the microplastics in the blood samples were likely introduced by drinking from plastic containers.
53.According to Paragraph 5, what was Prof Dick Vethaak’s attitude towards their findings?
A.Doubtful. B.Negative. C.Excited. D.Depressed.
54.The underlined part “this is a pioneering study” in Paragraph 7 probably means ________.
A.we are the pioneers in the field of plastic research
B.we need more blood examples and more work to do
C.we are entering a whole new field of research
D.this is an extremely important study
55.Which section of the newspaper may this article be found in?
A.Political. B.Fashion. C.Food. D.Environment.
第三部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
In 2016, Wanda Dench was trying to let her grandkids know about the family’s upcoming plans for the holiday and tried to send a text message to her grandson. But Jamal Hinton, who was a 17-year-old high school student and complete stranger to Dench at the time, received the text instead.
Once the two Arizona natives realized the mistake, Hinton asked if he could “still get a plate,” according to screenshots he posted on Twitter. Dench replied, “Of course, you can. That’s what grandmas do...feed everyone.”
Hinton shared the sweet conversation on social media and the story quickly went viral (疯传). They have celebrated Thanksgiving together every year since, always snapping photos and taking videos, much to the delight of many following their story.
This year, a very important person is missing from the annual tradition — Dench’s husband, Lonnie. He died from the coronavirus this spring. Wanda was able to be with him during his final moments.
Dench and Hinton thought about the risks of holding a Thanksgiving celebration amid the pandemic (疫情期间), weighing if they could figure out a way to get together the day before gathering with their own individual families. But, they eventually concluded the risk was too high.
In honor of Lonnie, the friends instead held a small gathering on Friday. Dench, her actual grandson, her daughter, Hinton and his girlfriend, Mikaela, got together for an early Thanksgiving meal. The event was a sharp contrast from the larger celebrations of years past.
“I didn’t want to miss Thanksgiving with Jamal,” Dench said. “This year is definitely different than all the years in the past.”
To honor Lonnie, an empty seat and lit candle were placed at the head of the table. The beloved husband would always say grace before the holiday meal, so this year, Dench led the prayer.
“Thank you for all the blessings, and thank you so much for having Lonnie in my life,” Dench said as everyone sat around the table. “I miss him, but I know he’s in a good place. So to everybody here, I love you and have a wonderful Thanksgiving.”
56.What was the relationship between Dench and Hinton at the beginning of the story? (no more than 3 words)
57.How do you understand the underlined part in Paragraph 2? (no more than 6 words)
58.Why was this year’s gathering a sharp contrast from the larger celebrations of years past? (no more than 15 words)
59.Why did Dench lead the prayer this year? (no more than 10 words)
