Vision of Hope

Molly Burke was not born blind. She started losing her sight when she was four years old. Doctors said that she had a rare eye disease that would gradually take away her vision. In her first grade, she learned to read Braille (the language used for the blind), although she could still see.

By age 14, Molly was completely blind. What’s worse, a group of girls who were once her friends started bullying her. Eventually, Molly became disappointed and depressed. Her high school years were not easy.

After she finished high school, Molly wanted to do something that would help others. Then she found out about Me to We, an organization that runs international volunteer trips and leadership camps. Molly knew what she wanted to do next - to help inspire people by being a speaker at Me to We.

Molly began speaking at schools all over the USA and Canada about bullying. Her advice? Be strong! During a speech in Toronto, she spoke to about 20, 000 people. After her speech, the crowd stood up and clapped. “Molly has a real ability to inspire people and to help others, ” her father says.

In 2014, Molly started her own channel on social media, uploading things like makeup video blogs, or vlogs. As of 2019, she has close to two million followers, some of whom don’t even know she’s blind. She tries to be a role model for young people but is realistic about what she can and can’t do. She even makes fun of the challenges she faces as a blind person - like sharing a video that she once bit into a lemon, thinking it was a potato.

“How can you hold somebody like that back?” says Molly’s mother. “She’s unstoppable” .

We are back from our three-day camping trip to the Shenandoah Valley. Mom and Dad had been worried about our family’s reliance on computers, cell phones, and video games for entertainment. So they decided a camping trip would help us overcome our dependence on electronic devices. I knew we’d have to be resilient (适应力强的) in order to find a way to survive without the comforts of home.

When you camp in the backcountry, you could only bring necessities that you needed to survive, such as food, clothes, a camp stove, fuel, rope, a map, and a water container. At first, I was surprised that we weren’t bringing bottled water with us. Then my heavy, overstuffed backpack made me realize we’d soon use up any supply we could carry. Instead, we’d have to boil water from nearby streams.

Our first day in the wild was out of expectation. We scrabbled up rocky paths and waded in an ice-cold stream. Colourful wildflowers waved at us. I felt like I had stepped into a dreamy painting. After all that exercise, an intense hunger burned in my stomach. Mom’s homemade snacks had never tasted so good.

At night, the darkness seemed like a black curtain. I tried to read with an electric torch, but I couldn’t concentrate. I finally fell asleep to a chorus of chirping crickets (蟋蟀鸣叫声中).

By our last day, I had blistered (长水泡的) feet and bug-bitten arms. I was ready to go home. I couldn’t wait to play computer games. But a funny thing happened. Soon after I started my favorite game, I lost the interest. So I walked outside to get some fresh air. Mom and Dad’s plan had worked after all. Right then I decided to spend more time outdoors.

Once there was a rich man named Richard.He was greedy.One day he was walking in his garden. He saw a strange bird in a bush. It was very small. But it had very beautiful and colorful features. Its voice was also very sweet. Richard had never seen such a bird in his life. He slowly went near the bush and caught the bird.

“Why have you caught me?” the bird asked.

“I want to make money. I can sell you for a big amount,” replied Richard.

   The bird then suggested, “Set me free. In return I shall teach you three simple but useful rules,these rules can profit you greatly.” 

 “Profit me! Really? ”said Richard. “But how can I trust you? You may fly away.”

   “I give you my word. And I always keep my word.” said the bird.

Richard wanted to take a chance .He released the bird. It flew up at once. Then it sat on the branch of a tree. Its color started changing. It became beautiful again.

Richard asked,"Now teach me the rules.”

“Certainly. ”said the bird. Then it added, “The first rule is ‘Never believe everything others say.’The second rule is ‘Never be sad about something you do not have, ’The third rule is‘（83）______. ’”

“You silly bird. ” shouted Richard. These three rules are known to everyone. You cheated me.

But the bird said,“Richard, just think about all your actions of today. You had me in your hands, but you threw me away. You believed all that I said. And you are sad about not having me. The rules are simple, but you never followed them. Now do you see the value of the rules?”

So saying the bird few away and disappeared from his sight.
