EDITOR’S NOTE
A Century in Circulation
This year’s annual classics collection is particularly special, given it is the magazine’s 100th anniversary year. Peeling back the covers of the thousands of editions, published in numerous countries, and dating back to the first issue in February 1922, is always a task we enjoy doing.
This collection offers a wide range of different subjects. Each one we hope will inform, delight, amuse and perhaps even confound our readers: from stepping inside the French artist Pierre-Auguste’s inner circle of friends (Page 84), to finding peace from depression in a solitary walk on the beach (Page 92) and meeting a cat who held a family together as they began to fall apart (Page 20). My favorite article, Exploits of Charles (Page 100), is written by a mother about the increasingly odd behavior of a little boy in her young son’s kindergarten class. I am sure you’ll enjoy this amusing account of a small boy adjusting to his new classmates and teachers. With an endless supply of wonderful stories, surprising insights and experiences to share, Reader’s Digest remains a place to find fresh perspectives and a great read.
Happy reading!

One of the reasons I became a teacher was how much I loved the reading and writing process, and how excited I was to help young children develop as readers and writers. I had visions of a class full of busy writers, all with the same sense of excitement I’ve always had about writing and sharing stories.
One day, I discovered the work of Vivian Paley, who developed a storytelling curriculum for young children that involves writing down the contents of students’ drawings and having their classmates act out these stories. I was immediately drawn to Paley’s focus on dramatization(编剧).
One morning, as my students gathered in our classroom for our writing lesson, I told them that they could draw anything they’d like, imaginary or real that day. They discussed with one another what they liked to draw and shared some of these ideas out loud, which helped inspire those who weren’t ready with their own ideas. For the next half-hour or so, I was busy writing down their stories. I observed some of my most hesitant and unwilling students drawing with a sense of focus and purpose.
At the end of the session, we sat in a circle and I explained that we would act out some of their stories. The“playwright(剧作家)”would choose classmates to be the characters in the story, and I would tell the story. Then the first playwright stood up to announce which char- acters she’d need. I watched as one student became a rabbit, another became a fairy, and another became a rain bow cloud. When the play was over, the actors and playwright bowed, and the class clapped for them. The next playwright jumped to her feet, shouting, “My story is next!”

As mountains go,1642-foot Squaw Peak isn't particularly impressive. But its inviting views of western Massachusetts have tricked hikers into becoming relaxed among its steep, slippery cliffs, resulting in countless injuries and even deaths.

For any astronaut hoping to survive on the surface of the moon, growing crops will be essentia1.Now, scientists have taken “one small step”towards growing plants on the lunar surface, after showing it 's possible to grow thale cress, a small flowering plant,in lunar soil.
The findings raise hopes that plants could be grown on the moon during future space missions, and even enable mankind to set up a lunar settlement. "For future, longer space missions,we may use the moon as a launching platform," explained Professor Rob Ferl. “It makes sense that we would want to use the soil that 's already there to grow plants."Until now, scientists have not grown plants in the soil.“So, what happens when you grow plants in lunar soil? What would plants do in a lunar greenhouse? Could we have lunar farmers?” Professor Ferl questioned.
To answer these questions, researchers from Florida set out to plant thale cress seeds in lunar soil, add water, nutrients, and light, and see what happened. The researchers chose to use thale cress because its genetic code has already been fully mapped.
For comparison, the researchers also planted seeds in a range of soils, including those that simulate Martian soils. To their delight, the researchers found that nearly all of the seeds grew. However, they did observe differences between the plants grown in the lunar soil and those grown in the control soils. Some of the plants grown in the lunar soils were smaller, while others grew more slowly or were more varied in size.
Growing plants in lunar soils may also change the moon itself, according to Dr Stephen Elardo."The moon is a very, very dry place," he said."How will minerals in the lunar soil respond to having a plant grown in them, with the added water and nutrients? Will adding water make the minerals friendlier to plants?”The researchers hope to answer these questions in follow-up studies.
32. What's the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The significance of the findings.
B.The plants grown in the lunar soil.
C. The missions of future space exploration.
D. The hope for setting up a lunar settlement.
33. Why did researchers use thale cress in the experiment?
A. Its genes are suitable for lunar soil.
B. It has a long evolutionary history.
C. It has been tested with lunar soil before.
D. People have a good knowledge of its genes.
34.What did researchers find about the plants grown in lunar soi1?
A. They absorbed few nutrients.
B. They didn't grow well enough.
C.They grew slowly in the dark.
D. They needed more water to grow bigger.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A. Scientists Grow Plants in Lunar Soil
B. Scientists Conduct a Study on Lunar Soil
C. Scientists Prepare for Farming on the Moon
D.Scientists Hope to Collect More Lunar Soil

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It had been 5 years since Zahida’s husband passed away due to a heart attack. Every day, she buried herself in her embroidery (刺绣), feeling her waist ache due to the long hours of work. She would grow tired faster these days.
The doorbell rang. Her son Aamer returned from the office. Entering the house, Aamer threw his bag at a sofa. “I have told you again and again not to throw things everywhere!” Zahida complained. “Mom, why do you find fault with unimportant things every day? Boss at office, you at home... Oh so tiring!” Aamer slammed (砰地关上) the door to his room.
Such unpleasant exchanges always happened now. Zahida would often recall the days of Aamer’s childhood fondly, which would bring smile to her face. She could remember the days when the little Aamer had parted unwillingly on his first day to school or had shouted excitedly at spotting a sleepy bear during a visit to the zoo. Zahida wondered if Aamer too could recollect these memories or had piled them in a forgotten corner of his mind.
Following a quiet dinner that night, Zahida happened to pass Aamer’s room. She could hear Aamer’s voice floating out. “Yes, yes... you do understand that she is a picky woman. She cannot adjust easily anywhere. You must take care of that...”
Zahida was caught by a sudden sense of anxiety. A few days ago, a neighbor’s children sent her neighbor off to an old age home. They were too busy to have time for the old woman. What did Aamer talk of? Was she also...? No, surely Aamer couldn’t be doing that. Zahida retired to bed.
“Please be sure to deliver the tickets for our trip to Egypt as soon as possible,” Aamer continued.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
A few days later, a postman rang the doorbell when Aamer was away for work.

All the students and teachers in our school took part in it. We went to a village called Yongxing Village, where we worked in two groups. The first group collected the rubbish and the second group distributed leaflets. Besides, we gave a speech on “white pollution” related to the environmental protection.
For the sake of people’s health and happiness, all of us should play a role in protecting the environment.
Have you done any voluntary work recently? Looking forward to your sharing.
Yours,

A few days later, a postman rang the doorbell when Aamer was away for work. A big envelope was delivered to Aamer. Zahida could figure out a government seal on the envelope. Not trusting her fingers to tear open the envelope without harming the contents within and considering it as important, she placed it on the table. Aamer could check what was inside when he returned. Aamer, upon returning, spotted the envelope. Grabbing it swiftly, he began tearing it open, his eyes shining with excitement.
“Mom, here... Look what I’ve got in the envelope!” Aamer shouted with joy like a child. Zahida took the contents from her son’s hands. It contained air tickets bearing her and Aamer’s names and some other documents. She looked up questioningly. “Oh, Mom. We are going on a trip to Egypt. Remember how you used to tell me bed-time tales of the ancient Egypt? Let’s visit it for real this time. I know you are a little picky. I have taken care to get good accommodations in Cairo and...” Aamer went on and on talking while his mother smiled with a sense of happiness filling her heart.

英语听力原文
Text 1
M: Oh, no! Look at what happened to my phone! The screen won’t even turn on. It must be from the rain.
W: I heard there is a way to dry it out. Separate the battery and the phone and drop them in a bag of rice.
Text 2
M: That’s the fire alarm. Everybody needs to get out of the office.
W: It’s a false alarm. The fan has set off the alarm again.
M: You could be right but safety must come first. Please leave the building.
Text 3
W: How many people are coming to dinner tonight?
M: The twins will be here, as well as you and me of course. I hope that’s OK with you.
Text 4
W: I’m so tired today. My power went out last night during the storm, and I couldn’t figure out how to fix it.
M: That seems like an annoying task. Did you stay up trying to find out what the problem was?
W: No. It was just too hot to sleep after that.
Text 5
M: How can you tell which ones are fresh?
W: Give them a little press. If they are too soft, put them back. It’s OK if they are a bit firm. We’ll just leave them on the counter for a couple of days.
Text 6
M: Garden Hotel. Can I help you?
W: My name is Vicky Clark. I saw your advertisement in the newspaper. Can you tell me about the job, please?
M: We need people working in the kitchen, washing up, and clearing tables. What jobs have you done before?
W: I’ve worked in a restaurant. But I’m a student, so I can only work on weekends.
M: That’s not a problem. Can you come here at 2:00 this afternoon to meet the manager?
W: I’m sorry. I have class from 2:00 to 3:00, but I can come afterwards at 3:30.
M: That’s fine.
Text 7
M: My parents want me to go to a family party this weekend. I know it’s going to be so boring. It always is.
W: Don’t say that. You should be happy to spend time with your family. My family live across the country, so I don’t get to see them often. It’s a bit depressing.
M: Really? I’m sorry to hear that. Do you see them at least once a year, for birthdays or maybe a marriage in the family?
W: I saw them on Christmas this past year. That’s usually when we get together. I would love to go more often, but California is far away.
M: I imagine it is a long ride across the country. Plus, you would have to take the time off from school and work.
W: Actually, it’s more of the cost that keeps me from going often.
Text 8
M: I think we should speak to our new neighbors about the noise.
W: I agree. I had hoped it would calm down but they have been here for over a month now.
M: I know it must be hard for them with a young child.
W: It’s not just the boy. They have three dogs in that tiny apartment.
M: Yes, and they bark a lot during the day. They could take them to the park. There’s lots of space.
W: Should we ask the other residents what they think?
M: I’m pretty sure everyone will think the same as us.
W: Then should we go over there just now and knock on their door?
M: Why don’t we write them a letter instead?
W: That’s a good idea.
Text 9
W: Ronald, it is lovely that you agreed to come and do this for me.
M: Don’t worry about it one bit. You’ll do great. This little interview is nothing, compared to setting up this beautiful museum.
W: Thank you. Who would you say is your biggest hero?
M: Well, you already know the answer to that, Kristal. My adviser was Ansel Adams, the great nature photographer.
W: And where did you meet Ansel?
M: Well, it’s an odd story actually. I was with my friends in the summer and they wanted to go fishing that day. I told them I would rather walk through the woods, so I hiked a mountain to relax alone, and ran into Ansel at the top.
W: Let me guess. He was taking pictures of the rocks?
M: Almost. He was taking pictures of a special cloud. Immediately, he began telling me everything a person could know about clouds. He was a wealth of information. He invited me back to his photography studio after.
W: And was that the moment you wanted to learn from him?
M: No. I decided that after he took me to his favorite spot. The amount of knowledge that Ansel had was important to me. However, it was the pure joy and love for teaching and appreciating photography that got me.
W: And now you own your own studio, you design clothing and will soon have a permanent section here at the modern museum of art and technology.
Text 10
The United Kingdom is a group of islands off the coast of Europe — but it hasn’t always been that way. Many thousands of years ago, the UK was attached to Europe by a stretch of land known as Doggerland. And the evidence of the people who lived there is regularly found. Roughly 12,000 years ago, as the last major ice age was ending, the area that is now the North Sea was very different. Instead of water, the area had hills, wetlands and valleys full of trees. Stone Age people lived in Doggerland. They were hunter-gatherers who moved with the seasons and lived by fishing, hunting, and gathering food such as nuts and berries. Over time, they were slowly flooded out of their hunting grounds. Water which had been locked away in ice began to melt, drowning Doggerland. Around 6000 years ago, people were forced onto higher ground in what are today’s England and the Netherlands. The evidence of the ancient people’s presence can be found on the sea floor, where modern fishermen often find bones and tools that date back to about 9000 years ago. Those studying Doggerland say the climate change faced by ancient people is similar to that we have now. They say that a similar situation could affect the billions of people who live within 60 kilometers of a sea shore today if polar ice caps continue to melt at a rapid pace.
