Years earlier, I’d been a trainee in a lab, which stuck to a traditional format. The lab head would spend much time asking the presenter a series of pointed questions. Presenters would need to know extremely small details about articles they were citing and present their research using picture-perfect analyses and graphs. So the presentation was an untoward thing to almost anyone.
When I started my own lab, I decided to change the routine by being friendly and welcoming while asking my trainees challenging questions about their science. But for 6 years, I felt I hadn’t created the lab environment I wanted.
The turning point came during the pandemic. It hit home to me that one’s life isn’t endless and that I need to make the most of the time I have. I decided that I wanted to become a better professor—to make a mark by training the next generation of scientists.
In my personal life, I had benefited from listening to talks by motivational speakers. So I decided to start there. At the next lab meeting, I showed my students a video about happiness, hoping it would help them in their personal life and give us something light to discuss. I wasn’t sure how they’d respond, hut I was pleased to discover that they were interested in discussing the advice in the video afterward. In the end, I asked them whether they’d like to do similar activities in future meetings, and they said yes.
From then on, I began every lab meeting with a 20-minute team building session. My lab members and I do many activities—including analyzing and appreciating poetry. These sessions have eased tensions and opened minds, helping foster more participation later in the meeting.
So far, I have been hopeful about the lab environment we’re creating. My greatest wish is to see my trainees become their best selves, understand who they are and what they want as well as reach their career goals. I am proud of the change and the difference I’ve made.

A recent study by a group of researchers found that there is a link between happiness and a term that the researchers coined called “relational diversity.”
Using public data from sources like the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the World Health Organization, the researchers were able to analyze data sets and survey responses from people who had shared their daily habits, schedules and interactions. They noticed a clear relationship between relational diversity and overall levels of satisfaction.
Hanne Collins, a Harvard Business School doctoral student who co-authored the study, says that relational diversity is composed of two elements: richness and evenness.
Richness measures relationship categories, or how many kinds of people you interact with in a day. That could be your romantic partner, a family member, a neighbor or a stranger. “The more relationship categories they talk to in a day and the more even their conversations are across those categories, the happier they are. And we find this in a large sample across many countries,” Collins said.
Evenness relates to the distribution of conversations among those different relationship categories. Some people may find themselves interacting with colleagues at work more than, say, their family members. “If you have a few conversations with colleagues, a few with friends, a few with a romantic partner or a couple chats with strangers, thats going to be more even across these categories,” Collins explained.
Ultimately, Collins says, the study gives insight to the idea that humans are social creatures at heart. Having a support system is important, but it goes beyond your inner circle. “Its about this mix. Its about connecting with people who are close to you, who are maybe less close to you, who connect you with other people, who provide different kinds of support,” she said. “Essentially, the idea is that the more diverse your social portfolio (社交档案), the happier you are and the higher your well-being.”
Next time you consider striking up a conversation with a stranger in line at the grocery store or while waiting at the coffee shop, keep in mind that it might be beneficial to your well-being.
8.How does the author explain the term “relational diversity”?
A.By listing statistics. B.By making comparison.
C.By giving definitions and examples. D.By describing the process.
9.Who is the happiest according to the study?
A.A person who interacts most with his family members.
B.A person who communicates frequently with his friends.
C.A person who seldom strikes up conversations with strangers.
D.A person who has ever conversations with many different people.
10.Which of the statements about the study is true?

D.It was led by a doctoral student from Harvard Business School.
11.What is the writers attitude towards the result of the study?

The next time you make yourself a hot cup of tea or coffee, you might want to let it cool down a bit before drinking. Researchers say letting your hot drinks cool off could help you avoid some kinds of cancer.
In fact, the United Nations’ cancer research agency decides to list hot drinks with lead, gasoline and exhaust fumes as “possibly carcinogenic (致癌的)”. In other words, each one could cause cancer.
Researchers at the International Agency for Research on Cancer found evidence that drinks at temperatures above 65 degrees Celsius, when swallowed, can cause cancer of the esophagus (食道).
The researchers examined findings from other studies where tea and coffee were often served at 70 degrees Celsius or above. Those studies were completed in China and South America. In developed countries, health experts have linked esophageal cancer to smoking and alcoholic drinks.
However, this form of cancer is more common in areas where people have drinks at very high temperatures.
In Europe and the United States, many people drink coffee and tea at temperatures around 60 degrees Celsius. And they often add milk which lowers the temperature considerably. However, tea drinkers in South America often enjoy their beverages at closer to 70 degrees Celsius.
In 1991, the World Health Organization listed coffee as “possibly carcinogenic”. WHO officials have since changed their position on that listing. They now suggest that the temperature of your hot drink is a greater risk factor than the actual drink itself.
Christopher Wild is the director of the IARC. He said that the results suggest that drinking very hot beverages is one probable cause of esophageal cancer and that it is the temperature, rather than the drinks themselves, that appears to be responsible.
12.Who most probably suffers from cancer of the esophagus?
A.A girl who likes cold milk. B.A man who drinks very hot tea.
C.A woman who likes coffee. D.A man who works at IARC.
13.Why did the WHO remove coffee from “possibly carcinogenic” list?
A.Because people don’t like coffee any longer.
B.Because people drink coffee at 60 degrees Celsius.
C.Because coffee has nothing to do with cancers.
D.Because temperature is more dangerous than coffee itself.
14.How does the author mainly support the theme of the text?
A.By studying examples. B.By starting arguments.
C.By providing research results. D.By showing backgrounds.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text?

52. What Trouble We Have
Having done a survey among our classmates recently, we find out what troubles students are facing.
According to the data, more than half of the students think the biggest trouble they face is keeping up with others, which, in my opinion, is the main source of students’ pressure. Nearly one fifth think it’s rather challenging to have more friends. About 12 percent believe that the biggest challenge they face is having a healthier lifestyle. Also a few students express their concern about their relationship with parents and several consider keeping hobbies as a luxury. Only 3 percent think they have no problems.
I guess it is the high pressure from study and peers that causes these problems. Consequently, I suggest that some activities should be organized to provide students with opportunities to relieve stress so that they would adopt a more positive attitude toward coming challenges.
