GO.STOP.GO.STOP. The travel ideas in my head were fighting. “Are you sure you want to head to Greece this November with Kathleen? The weather could be unpleasant,” my husband warned. “You must go! Sunsets are among the most beautiful in the world and the island is a paradise(天堂)!” My friend Laura raved about her trip in Santorini last year. With her encouraging words, I bought our tickets to Athens, Santorini and Crete.
A sunny Saturday afternoon welcomed us in Athens. During the first few days, Kathleen and I tried a lot of unknown-to-us foods. And then came Tuesday. The moment we landed in Santorini, a big storm broke. Santorini, normally a beautiful and popular tourist destination, was freezing, rainy and empty. With rain beating our faces, Kathleen and I headed for our hotel.
“This isn't how I want to spend my vacation, Mom,” Kathleen said sadly. “Maybe Crete isn't experiencing the same storm. Can we fly out later today?” My daughter thought up a clever idea. But we couldn't leave. We'd just arrived. Payments for the hotel would be lost and the last-minute air tickets would be expensive. “Let's not decide right now,” I suggested.
During the next few days, we drove around though it rained hard. On the night at a restaurant named Poseidon, we waited and waited for dinner. “Your dinner will be out shortly. The cook is busy studying something beautiful,” a man who looked like a waiter said. When he saw our puzzled look, he explained, “He went out for a smoke, saw two beautiful ladies and began to chat...” We suddenly started laughing.
I realized some change had been happening since our arrival. “You know, Mom, you can't live a positive life with a negative mind,” my daughter said. We let go of our worries and enjoyed our trip in the following days.

B. They were not used to the local foods.
C. They couldn't find their hotel.
D. Their trip was influenced by bad weather.
6、Why did the author choose not to fly to Crete?
A. To save money. B. To avoid the storm.
C. To end their journey early. D. To stay at the comfortable hotel.
7、What do the author and her daughter think is the most important during a trip?
A. A perfect plan. B. Good weather.
C. A positive attitude. D. A right destination.
There can be magic in the touch of a hand that loves you. It brings comfort and a silent promise that says, "I am here and you are not alone."
I memorized every detail about my children. As babies, they reached for me whenever they were hungry or tired or just needed to be held. Sometimes, if they woke in the night, just the touch of my hand would ease them back to sleep. They clung to me when they took their first steps and we held hands when crossing streets and walking from the car to their classroom on their first day of school.
As they grew older and more independent, I noticed that they didn't hold my hand much anymore. I told myself it was part of growing up, and I should just be glad they could do things on their own now.
But when you've been needed so much for such a long time, it's hard to step back and feel unnecessary.
Then one day, I was visiting my oldest son in New York, where he was working as an actor on a TV show. As we were about to cross a busy street that was filled with traffic, he grabbed my hand and shouted, "Hang on to me, Mom," then led me safely across.
At that moment, I realized two things. First, my boy had become a man. Second, it was clear that our roles had changed. We still needed each other, but in different ways than before.
That scene has replayed in various ways with each of my three children. They have all taught me to lean on them just as they once leaned on me, and that we can always lean on each other. We live miles apart, but stay in touch every day. There is magic and comfort and healing in the touch of a hand that loves you, even if it "touches" you from afar.
8、How did the author get along with her children when they were young?
A.She was very strict with them.
B.She overprotected them.
C.She was too busy to take care of them.
D.She developed a close bond with them.
9、How did the author feel when her kids became more independent?
A.She felt lonely when living apart from them.
B.She was worried that they couldn't manage themselves.
C.She felt a little uncomfortable when not needed so much as before.
D.She was pleased to be able to step back and enjoy herself.
10、The author's visit to her son in New York made her realize ______.
A.her son had become mature and reliable
B.time with children is always fun
C.she needed her son more than before
D.she was unwilling to accept the change in their roles
11、What is the author's main purpose in writing the text?
A.To explore how to interact with children.
B.To describe the growth of her children.
C.To show the power of the touch of a hand.
D.To present how parents influence their kids.
Back in ancient times, philosophers(哲学家) like Aristotle were already thinking about the origins of taste, and how the tongue sensed basic tastes like sweet, bitter, salty and sour.
“What scientists discovered just a few years ago is that there are areas of the brain where certain fields of neurons(神经元) respond to these different tastes. So there’s a sweet field, a bitter field, a salty field and so on,” said Nick Ryba, a neuroscientist at the National Institutes of Health.
But Ryba and his colleagues have found that we can actually taste without a tongue at all, simply by turning on or off the “taste” part of the brain. And by turning on the “bitter” sensing part of the brain, they were able to make mice pucker up(咧着嘴), as if they were tasting something bitter—even though nothing bitter was touching the tongues of the mice.
In another experiment, the researchers fed the mice a bitter taste on their tongues—but then made it more palatable by turning on the “sweet” zone of the brain. “What we were doing here was adding the sweetness, but only adding it in the brain, not in what we were giving to the mouse.” Think adding sugar to our coffee—but doing it only in our mind.
Ryba says the study suggests that a lot of our basic judgments about taste—sweet means good, bitter means bad—are actually made at the level of the brain. As for that virtual(虚拟的)-sugar-in-your-coffee idea? “I thought it’s basically science fiction to think that this would be something that would be used on humans. But today’s science fiction might be tomorrow’s artificial sweetener,” he added.
12、What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The philosophical ideas about the origins of different tastes.
B. The discovery about which part of the brain responds to a certain taste.
C. The way that scientists have found the taste-related zones in the brain.
D. The latest breakthrough in controlling the brain's response to the tastes.
13、What does the underlined word “palatable” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Controllable. B. Unacceptable. C. Pleasant. D. Real.
14、What does Ryba think of the virtual-sugar-in-your-coffee idea?
A. It is impossible. B. It can become true.
C. It is a reality. D. It is unbelievable.
15、From which is the text probably taken?
A. A science fiction. B. A biology textbook.
C. A science report. D. An experiment record.
16、 There are a lot of reasons why we may have to get up early. Maybe it’s for work, or maybe it’s to get your kids ready for school. ①_______ But if you’re not naturally a morning person, how can you wake up early? Here are some ways to help you.
Light.
The most powerful way to get your body feeling awake is to expose yourself to light. When you’re exposed to bright sunlight, your hormone (激素) tells the body, “Hey, it’s time to be awake.” ②_______ Those lights will signal to your body that it’s still daytime, which definitely won’t help if you’re trying to go to bed on time for an early wake-up.
Naps.
③_______ Sleep doctors call that a “sleep debt,” and just like credit card debt, it has to get repaid for your body to function well. If it doesn’t, you might end up suffering the more serious consequences of sleep deprivation. Naps are a great way to squeeze in some extra shut-eye. Sleep studies show naps even as short as 10 minutes can make a difference! ④_______ If we nap too late, too close to bedtime, then it’ll make it hard for us to go to sleep at night.
⑤_______
Create an encouragement to get out of bed in the morning. Maybe that’s a mindfulness exercise to remind yourself of who or what you’re waking up early for. Something as simple as promising yourself a nice breakfast as soon as you get out of bed can do the trick.
A. Reward yourself.
B. Be strict with yourself.
C. For some people, waking up early just feels natural.
D. So don’t expose your eyes to bright lights at night.
E. Try waking up even a few minutes earlier than you need to.
F. Waking up early often means that we wake up sleep deprived (被剥夺).
G. Try to keep naps under an hour and toward the middle of the day or earlier in the afternoon.

I always wondered how people would react if I tried to approach a total stranger for help in a busy place like a street corner or in a bustling mall. I personally have always hurried past a stranger who tried to catch my attention in a busy place or when I am rushing around.
Yesterday I had a taste of being stuck in such a desperate situation where my only hope of help would have to come from a total stranger.
I was in a busy shopping mall buying a large piece of luggage. After the purchase in one of the large, fancy, expensive shops, I picked up my phone from my pocket to call my driver waiting in the parking lot but my phone was dead.
I then requested the shop assistant who had just sold me the luggage, which was not cheap at all, if she could ring the number of my driver for me. She replied, still all smiles, "I'm sorry, sir, but it is the shop policy that we cannot use mobile phones while working in the shop."
As I was wondering what kind of policy that was, I saw a nice-looking teenage boy coming toward me. Remembering my wife's interesting theory that beautiful people are more likely to give you a hand when you're in trouble, I thought I might have a chance. But before I could say a word, he walked past me. It turned out he simply didn't see me.
I waited a bit longer in the mall but it seemed nobody bothered to look at me. Disappointed and tired, I got out of the shop onto the busy street in front. I stood there with people rushing by, looking at their faces to see if there was a sign of kindness on their face. I began wondering how many times I had reacted to strangers like the shop girl and the teenager.
Paragraph 1:
At that point I saw a young mother with her two kids.

Paragraph 2:
Finally a man wearing a cheap T-shirt and dirty jeans seemed to notice me.

根据第一段第三句“This show will last from Wednesday (March 2) to Sunday (March 6, 2022).”
2、答案:A
Teenagers under 15 free with a paying adult.” 故选A。
根据第七段第一句“Wheelchairs are available on a first-come-first-served basis for you.”

I memorized every detail about my children. As babies, they reached for me whenever they were hungry or tired or just needed to be held. Sometimes, if they woke in the night, just the touch of my hand would ease them back to sleep. They clung to me when they took their first steps and we held hands when crossing streets and walking from the car to their classroom on their first day of school.(我记住了我孩子的每一个细节。
As they grew older and more independent, I noticed that they didn't hold my hand much anymore. I told myself it was part of growing up, and I should just be glad they could do things on their own now.(随着他们越来越大,越来越独立,我注意到他们不再经常握我的手了。
10、答案:A
As we were about to cross a busy street that was filled with traffic, he grabbed my hand and shouted, "Hang on to me, Mom," then led me safely across.(我们正要穿过一条车水马龙的繁忙街道时,他抓住我的手大喊:"妈妈,抓紧我",然后领我安全地穿过。) At that moment, I realized two things. First, my boy had become a man. Second, it was clear that our roles had changed. We still needed each other, but in different ways than before.(那一刻,我意识到两件事。

In another experiment, the researchers fed the mice a bitter taste on their tongues—but then made it more palatable by turning on the 'sweet' zone of the brain."
But today's science fiction might be tomorrow's artificial sweetener"可知,Ryba认为它有一天可能会实现。

32、答案:①studying②an③at④probably⑤freedom⑥bought⑦whom⑧their⑨successful⑩is called
fall in love at first sight,固定短语,意为"一见钟情"。故填at。
分析可知,副词作状语修饰之后动词短语"get a stable job and live a middle-class life day"。
分析可知,"all of _____ were eager to know the details of their travels."
故填their。
故填is called。

Paragraph 1:
At that point I saw a young mother with her two kids. I thought that a beautiful woman with charming blue eyes must be willing to help me. So, with great expectation, I trotted briskly towards her with an appropriate smile on my face, and requested courteously if she could be kind enough to make a phone call for me. However, what I saw was the woman's face disfigured by frowns and what I heard was a sound of dismay and suspicion under her breath. Without a word, she pulled her kids to escape from me, as if scared by a murderer. I stood there, motionless, with a blank face and a sinking heart.
Paragraph 2:
Finally a man wearing a cheap T-shirt and dirty jeans seemed to notice me. I squeezed a smile though it failed to mask my weariness, and requested him the same thing. Unexpectedly, he took out his mobile phone for me without hesitation or any probing questions. Dancing in his eyes was the real kindness that I had been struggling to seek for so long. From that day on, I began to help other strangers in distress, just like the poor-looking but kind man, with the aim of passing kindness and melting the ice in many people's hearts.
