Will the AI chatbots eat search engines’ lunch? For more than 20 years, search engines have been the Internet’s front door. Google has dominated the field in most of the world. But nothing lasts forever, particularly in technology.
Just ask IBM, which once ruled business computing, or Nokia, once the leader in mobile phones. Both fell behind because they didn’t follow big technological transitions. Now another tech innovation might announce a similar shift—and a similar opportunity. ChatGPT has put itself on centre stage, by letting people chat with an AI directly. ChatGPT can write essays in various styles, explain complex concepts, summarize texts and answer questions. And it can collect, process and combine knowledge from the web: for example, listing holiday spots that match certain criteria, or suggesting menus or schedules. If asked, it can explain its reasoning and provide details. Many things that people use search engines for today, in short, can be done better with chatbots.
Will ChatGPT help students cheat better? Yes, but as with many other technology developments, it’s not a simple black and white situation. Decades ago, students could copy encyclopedia entries, and more recently, they’ve been able to search the Internet and explore into Wikipedia entries. ChatGPT offers new abilities for everything from helping with research to doing their homework for them. Many ChatGPT answers already sound like student essays. Ask the new artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT to write an essay about the cause of the American Civil War and you can watch it produce a persuasive term paper in a matter of seconds.
It can even (narrowly) pass a number of exams. It scored 60% on the United States Medical Licensing Examination, 70% on an exam for lawyers, 78% on New York state’s high school chemistry exam’s multiple choice section, and ranked the 40th on the Law School Admission Test.
A high school teacher concluded ChatGPT already writes better than most students today. He’s torn between admiring ChatGPT’s potential usefulness and fearing its harm to human learning: “Is this moment more like the invention of the calculator, saving me from the boredom of long division, or more like the invention of the player piano, robbing us of what can be communicated only through human emotion?”
    8. What is the reason why some tech companies fail to develop?
    A. The sharp rising market cost. B. Their shift to other business fields.
    C. The negative impact of local economy. D. Their failure to keep pace with tech changes.
    9. What is ChatGPT unable to do according to the text?
    A. Play the piano. B. Write various articles.
    C. Schedule a holiday trip. D. Explain complex concepts.
    10. What is the purpose of the percentages mentioned in paragraph 4?
    A. To explain a rule. B. To make a prediction. C. To illustrate a fact. D. To clarify a concept.
    11. What is the author’s attitude towards ChatGPT?
    A. Objective. B. Positive. C. Negative. D. Ambiguous.
D 9. A 10. C 11. A
根据第二段的“Just ask IBM, which once ruled business computing, or Nokia, once the leader in mobile phones. Both fell behind because they didn’t follow big technological transitions. (只要问问曾经统治商业计算的IBM,或者曾经是移动电话领导者的诺基亚就知道了。这两家公司之所以落后,是因为它们没有跟上重大的技术转型。)”可知,一些科技公司没能发展是因为它们没有跟上科技改革。故选D。
    【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的“ChatGPT can write essays in various styles, explain complex concepts, summarize texts and answer questions. And it can collect, process and combine knowledge from the web: for example, listing holiday spots that match certain criteria, or suggesting menus or schedules. If asked, it can explain its reasoning and provide details. Many things that people use search engines for today, in short, can be done better with chatbots. (ChatGPT可以写各种风格的文章,解释复杂的概念,总结文本和回答问题。它还可以收集、处理和整合来自网络的信息:例如,列出符合特定标准的度假地点,或者建议菜单或时间表。如果被问及,它可以解释其理由并提供细节。简而言之,人们今天使用搜索引擎做的许多事情,都可以用聊天机器人做得更好。)”可知,ChatGPT不会弹钢琴。故选A。
根据第四段的“It can even (narrowly) pass a number of exams. It scored 60% on the United States Medical Licensing Examination, 70% on an exam for lawyers, 78% on New York state’s high school chemistry exam’s multiple choice section, and ranked the 40th on the Law School Admission Test. ( 它甚至可以(勉强)通过一些考试。它在美国医疗执照考试中得分60%,在律师考试中得分70%,在纽约州高中化学考试的多项选择题中得分78%,在法学院入学考试中排名第40位。)”可知,本段通过一些数据说明了一个事实,ChatGPT甚至可以通过一些考试。故选C。
    【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段内容“A high school teacher concluded ChatGPT already writes better than most students today. He’s torn between admiring ChatGPT’s potential usefulness and fearing its harm to human learning: “Is this moment more like the invention of the calculator, saving me from the boredom of long division, or more like the invention of the player piano, robbing us of what can be communicated only through human emotion?” (一位高中老师总结道,ChatGPT的写作水平已经超过了今天的大多数学生。他在欣赏ChatGPT的潜在用途和担心它对人类学习的危害之间左右两难:“这一刻更像是计算器的发明,把我从长除法的无聊中拯救出来,还是更像是自动钢琴的发明,剥夺了我们只能通过人类情感交流的东西?”)”和前文的陈述可知,作者客观的评论了ChatGPT的优缺点。故选A。
    D
Singapore cannot afford to have large plots of land dedicated to growing crops—it is just too small. However, farming, or more precisely, urban farming, is now a buzz word here. Instead of looking at the grounds, Singapore has decided to look skyward, towards rooftops!
In 2020, Singapore announced plans to convert the roofs of nine multi-storey car-parks in public housing areas into spaces for commercially farmed vegetables and other crops. This is part of Singapore’s strategy to meet the country’s 30 by 30 goal, which is to produce 30% of its nutritional needs locally by 2030 up from 10% in 2020.
Several companies have taken on the task of cultivating the urban farming scene in Singapore. Citiponics has made a name for itself, building water-efficient organic “growing towers” that can be used to grow anything from butterhead lettuce (奶油生菜) to sweet basil (罗勒). In April 2020, they opened the first commercial farm on the rooftop of a multi-storey car park and now sell their produce via their own brand at local supermarkets. Edible Garden City (EGC) has more than 200farms across the island and works closely with restaurants to ensure sustainable supply and demand. A 460-square-meter farm run by EGC, is positioned on the rooftop of a mall to supply nearby restaurants.
Singapore is not alone in its efforts to go beyond the confines of conventional agriculture. All over the world, cities are seeking to feed their communities with local produce. At Thammasat University located just outside of Bangkok, a formerly disused rooftop has been transformed into a 7,000-square-meter space for organic farming, the largest in Asia.
Urban farming is not restricted to eatable plants such as leafy greens and vegetables. Rooftop Honey, which has over 130 hives throughout various locations in Greater Melbourne specializes in bees. The urban beekeeping operation, founded in 2010, serves two purposes: producing creamy and delicious honey for the city’s residents while also allowing the bees to pollinate (授粉) flowers in the surrounding areas.
There are several benefits to have the farms so close to home. Through community gardens or access to commercial-scale farm produce, the public have an opportunity to understand how food is grown. As the produce is pesticide free, there is also comfort in knowing where the food comes from and its impact on the environment.
    12. Why is the limited land resource in Singapore mentioned in the first paragraph?
    A. To explain benefits of urban farming. B. To show the function of urban farming.
    C. To introduce the result of urban farming. D. To emphasize the necessity of urban farming.
    13. What does the underlined word “confines” in paragraph 4 refer to?
    A. Strengths. B. Restrictions. C. Principles. D. Profits.
    14. What can we learn about urban farming from the text?
    A. Urban farming simply means growing vegetables and fruits.
    B. Urban farming is a solution to farming where land is lacking.
    C. Urban farming helps to increase the crop production greatly.
    D. Urban farming has never been commercialized in Singapore.
15 Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. A New Plan Launched in Singapore B. Singapore, the Birthplace of Urban Farming
    C. Urban Farming, a Novel Pattern of Farming D. Strengths and Weaknesses of Urban Farming
D 13. B 14. B 15. C
根据第一段内容“Singapore cannot afford to have large plots of land dedicated to growing crops—it is just too small. However, farming, or more precisely, urban farming, is now a buzz word here. Instead of looking at the grounds, Singapore has decided to look skyward, towards rooftops!(新加坡不能拥有大片的土地专门用于种植农作物——它实在是太小了。然而,农业,或者更准确地说,城市农业,现在在这里是一个流行词。新加坡不再看地面,而是决定看向天空,看向屋顶!)”可推断,提到新加坡有限的土地资源是为了强调城市农业的必要性。故选D。
    【13题详解】
词义猜测题。根据下文“All over the world, cities are seeking to feed their communities with local produce. At Thammasat University located just outside of Bangkok, a formerly disused rooftop has been transformed into a 7,000-square-meter space for organic farming, the largest in Asia.( 在世界各地,城市都在寻求用当地农产品养活社区。在泰国国立法政大学(Thammasat University),一个以前被废弃的屋顶被改造成一个7000平方米的有机农业空间,这是亚洲最大的有机农业空间。)”可知,世界其他地区也在寻求城市农业空间,因此推断新加坡并不是唯一一个努力超越传统农业局限的国家。划线词与B项“限制”意思相近。故选B。
    【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“There are several benefits to have the farms so close to home. Through community gardens or access to commercial-scale farm produce, the public have an opportunity to understand how food is grown. As the produce is pesticide free, there is also comfort in knowing where the food comes from and its impact on the environment.( 把农场建在离家这么近的地方有几个好处。通过社区花园或商业规模的农产品,公众有机会了解食物是如何种植的。由于这些产品不含农药,人们知道这些食物的来源及其对环境的影响也让人感到欣慰。)”可推动,城市农业对于解决土地缺乏是好的解决办法。故选B。
    【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段的“Instead of looking at the grounds, Singapore has decided to look skyward, towards rooftops!( 新加坡不再看地面,而是决定看向天空,看向屋顶!)”,第三段的“Several companies have taken on the task of cultivating the urban farming scene in Singapore.( 几家公司已经承担了在新加坡培育城市农业的任务。)”

    Postcards From The World
While the sun washed over the grass of my grandmother’s front garden, I sunk into the familiarity of one of her armchairs. Life, as I knew it, had changed. My beloved grandmother, my nanny, a stand-in parent in the absence of my father, had cancer. It was terminal, and could never be cured.
As she watched Getaway on television, she remarked to me that she’d never left Australia and that now she never would. I swallowed the sadness that came with knowing that chapters of her life were to be left unwritten.
At work, feeling helpless, I wiped tables and took orders and thought. HARD! The Saturday afternoon lunch rush was not enough to lull me from my thoughts. Wracked with grief, I pondered the power of Facebook and the collective strength of human empathy. I raced from the end of my shift to ask strangers on the internet for help.
“My Nanny Del has cancer. It’s terminal and she will never see the world. Please send her postcards so she can see the world from her armchair. I can offer nothing but gratitude.”
I resolved not to breathe a word of this; should nothing come, I couldn’t bear to carry her disappointment along with my own. Should something wander into our humble little letterbox, I would consider it a blessing and embrace it like I embraced her little, shrinking frame.
Days turned to weeks and Nanny’s health worsened rapidly in the early months of 2018. Life took me through my full-time study, babysitting and waiting tables, along with the responsibility of caring for a grandparent who was too sick to care for herself. As I helped Nanny in the early hours of those mornings, she would chat to me, sometimes joys, other times, sorrows. Whatever she shared became precious.

    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

In the months that followed, her living room became a departure hall and our flights departed daily.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One afternoon, finally, a postcard from the United States arrived in our letterbox. The simple postcard from America to our sleepy little seaside town in Australia was to me a beacon of light. I held it tight in my hands, read and re-read the words scrawled across the back: Nanny Del, thinking of you in Michigan, USA... From that day, our letterbox became the destination for postcards from all over the world. Our letterbox became a hotel, accommodating travel-weary cards from everywhere: India, Italy, China, and Japan. The cards were love and from all corners of the globe. I sat next to my Nanny, reading the cards to her. Tears of happiness mixed with grief fell onto those postcards.
In the months that followed, her living room became a departure hall and our flights departed daily. Her hospital bed became an airport lounge, where we researched and planned our next departure. We visited Milan and cruised the Japanese Sca before hopping over to Taiwan. We travelled the entirety of the United States. Nanny hung out for every visit from the postman, eagerly awaiting news of her next departure.” I just can’t believe strangers did this for a little old lady they’ve never met” became a sentiment she murmured many times. I reached out to the senders; reminding them that they’d impacted strangers in a way they’d perhaps never know. Our travels took us far and wide. Cancer could not stop us.
