There was magic in the secret garden that spring and summer. At first, everything turned green. Then the green changed to colours—blue, purple and red. There were flowers everywhere

Dickon and Mary's seeds grew and the roses—the roses! From small buds they grew into large flowers and filled the air with their perfume

Colin saw it all. He watched the changes as they happened. Dickon pushed his wheelchair to the garden every morning and he spent the day there. Sometimes Colin sat on the grass watching the insects. One day, he watched a mole(鼹鼠)digging a hole. He learnt a lot of things about the ways of these insects and animals. And Dickon taught him about the animals in the wood.

One morning, the children were in the secret garden as usual. When Ben Weatherstaff arrived Colin said, "Good morning. Ben Weatherstaff. I want you and Dickon and Mary to listen to me because I'm going to tell you something very important.

"Yes, sir!" answered Ben Weatherstaff.

"I'm going to do a scientific experiment(科学实验), "he said. "When I grow up, I'm going to make scientific discoveries about magic and I'm going to start with this experiment. Do you understand? "

"Yes, sir!" said Ben Weatherstaff, but he didn't really understand.

"I believe that there is magic in everything. " continued Colin. "Dickon knows some magic. He charms animals and people. Mary also knows a bit of magic because she was born in India. There's magic in the garden, too. I'm going to try and put some in me because I want to be well and strong, I'm going to say—Magic is in me! And you must all say it, too. That is my experiment Are you going to help, Ben Weatherstaff?"

"Yes, sir!" answered Ben Weatherstaff.

They sat down in a circle. The crow, the fox, the squirrels and the lamb were very curious. "Now, let's begin, " Colin said, and they all started chanting(吟唱). "Magic is in me. Magic is in me. Magic is in all of us. "

Then Colin stood up and walked round the garden. He went in front with Dickon on one side and Mary on the other. Ben Weatherstaff walked behind.

Colin walked a bit then rested. Then he walked again and rested again. At first, he held Dickon's arm, then he walked a few steps alone.

"I can walk! The magic worked!" he cried. "What is the doctor going to say?" asked Mary.

"Nothing. " Colin answered, "because we aren't going to tell him. No one must know that I can walk and run. It's a surprise for my father when he comes back to Misselthwaite. "

"He's going to think it's a dream, " said Mary.

Earthquakes happen very often in Tokyo, but Tokyo is not an unlucky city. Many special parks have been built in Tokyo to keep people safe during earthquakes. These parks look nothing different from the other parks, but when earthquakes happen, they become life-saving places.

Many useful things in those special parks can meet people’s basic needs.

For example, it is usually hard for people to get water after earthquakes. In the special parks, people can get drinking water from the water pump (泵). If people need to use toilets (厕所), they can choose special toilets that can be used without water. Also, the helicopter (直升机) can land on squares or baseball fields and bring food or other things to people. What’s more, if people need to cook in the parks, some special benches can become cooking things.

However, those useful things are not enough for people to face earthquakes. The most important part lies in training people. The parks, together with fire stations and the police, will train with local people at the usual time. This will let people think and move faster during real earthquakes and let them protect themselves better.

So, what can we do to protect ourselves from getting hurt in earthquakes? First, we need to check our furniture and make sure they won’t fall down easily. Second, when an earthquake happens, we need to stay under tables or desks and protect our head. Third, we can keep our door open and wear comfortable shoes during small earthquakes in order to get out safely.

When a thought has found words

Poetry is the forgotten child of literature. Few people read it for pleasure. In Western high schools, poetry is seldom taught because it is considered to be out of date and have little to do with the life of today’s students.

In China, however, poetry is still an important part of the curriculum (课程) . Recently, the Ministry of Education has increased the number of ancient Chinese poems for students to memorize and recite, from 14 to 72. Why is it important to learn poems?

First of all, poetry is a necessary part of learning traditional Chinese culture. It is a path to understanding your history and your society. It is also the key to understanding the thoughts and feelings that are common to everyone but we may be unable to express—the joy of Li Bai dancing with the moon, for example. Everyone has feelings of joy, love, loneliness, sadness and even anger, and a good poem can help us put those feelings into words and bring us self-understanding.

Poems can also express beauty. In a few short lines, even something common can become beautiful. Here is a poem called “Fog” by Carl Sandberg: The fog comes/on silent haunches (弓腰)/and then moves on. Yes, fog does move smoothly, silently and like a cat, and Sandberg catches that feeling and image, and makes it beautiful.

Of course, to really enjoy poetry, it has to be read aloud. After all, a poem is really just a song without music. Most ancient poetry, like Homer’s Epics and China’s Book of Songs, was spoken for hundreds of years before it was written.

The American poet Robert Frost said, “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” You are lucky that you now have seventy-two poems to learn!
