One North Carolina business owner is helping the homeless by opening up his parking lot to people who may be living out of their cars.
James Charles is the owner of Kiplin’s Automotive Group in Charlotte, North Carolina. For about two months, he has been encouraging people sleeping in their cars to use the company’s parking lot as a safe place to sleep at night.
Charles was first encouraged to do something helpful after his team tried to take back a woman’s car back in January.
“The gentleman who was taking back the car said, ‘We can’t take the car; there’s somebody living in the car,’” Charles told WBTV.
Then he tried to get the woman into a homeless shelter (收容所). But he was shocked to find that every shelter in the city was full. Although he paid for her to stay in a hotel for a few nights, he knew that there were other people suffering from the same thing.
Charles made a Facebook post: “We would like to provide a safe place for those going through this tough time. We can’t put everyone in a hotel, but we can get you a safe place for the night.
Since more and more people have shared his post, people have donated (捐赠) hats, scarves, food, and even an easy-to-move toilet for the parking lot. Not only that, but about 20 different people have helped Charles with his offer by parking their cars overnight at the lot.

New Zealand’s government recently announced it will help pay for poorer families to replace their old cars with cleaner hybrid(混合动力的)or electric vehicles. The government said it plans to spend $357 million on the test program.
The move is part of a wider plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gases are believed to cause warming temperatures in the Earth’s atmosphere. New Zealand plans to provide aid for businesses to reduce emissions and have buses that run on environmentally safe fuel by 2035. The government also plans to provide food-waste collection for most homes by 2030.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardem said in a statement, “We’ve all seen the recent reports on sea level rise and its influence right here in New Zealand. We cannot leave the issue of climate change until it’s too late to fix.” The plan is a step toward New Zealand’s stated goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Reaching net-zero emissions means not creating more carbon in the atmosphere than oceans and forests can remove. Ardern said that reducing dependence on traditional fuels would help protect families from extreme price increases. The plan also sets a goal of reducing total car travel by 20 percent over the next 13 years. The programs will be paid for from a $2.8 billion climate emergency response fund.
Officials said that over time, money collected from polluters would pay for the programs rather than taxes from families. Some critics of the plan say it continued to be less restrictive on New Zealand’s huge agriculture industry. Agriculture creates more than half of the nation’s total greenhouse gas emissions. But the industry is also important to the economy as the nation’s biggest export earner.
David Seymour is the leader of New Zealand’s ACT political party. He said that some of the announced programs are proven to be ineffective and have been tried and failed overseas. Seymour added that people should be able to choose how they reduce emissions through the market-basedd emissions trading plan.
8.Which of the following is NOT New Zealand planning to do?
A.Buy cars for poor families. B.Offer assistance to business.
C.Use environmentally safe fuels. D.Spend money on the test program.
9.What does Jacinda Ardem suggest doing about the climate change?
A.Setting aside the problem. B.Realizing the stated goal.
C.Addressing the issue early. D.Decreasing dependence on traditional fuels.
10.What can we infer from the text?
A.New Zealand aims to control carbon emissions.
B.The move has a goal of reducing the use of buses.
C.Achieving net-zero emissions means creating no carbon.
D.Agriculture makes less importance in the nation’s economy.
11.What is David Seymour’s attitude towards the program?
A.Negative. B.Objective.
C.Favorable D.Unconcerned.
D
You’re lying in bed, staring at the ceiling. Go to sleep, you tell yourself. You shut your eyes tight, force your body to relax, and wait for the pleasant sleep to come. But nothing happens. It’s 3 a. m. , and you’re still staring at the ceiling.
We have all been in this situation. Try as we might, it is nearly impossible to consciously will yourself to sleep. Sleep comes to those who let their mind wander and focus on anything other than sleep itself. Count sheep, control your breathing, listen to an audiobook (有声书), or whatever - so long as it turns your mind from wanting to sleep. This is a common example of the “law of reversed effort.”
The Law of Reversed Effort was first created by Aldous Huxley. “The harder we try with the conscious will to do something, the less we shall succeed.” Suppose, for instance, that you are learning how to ride a bike. You are told to hold the handlebars, to push off with this foot, to pedal at that speed, to hold your balance here, and so on. When riding, we know all these instructions, but we do not try to do them. They just happen. In Huxley’s words, it’s “combining relaxation with activity.”
There’s a spiritual way of viewing the “law of reversed effort” as well. It’s something that has a much longer history than Aldous Huxley - it’s the Daoist idea of “Wu Wei.” It is to walk the path that opens up and push the door that gives. Call it fate, divine (神圣的) calling, or whatever, but Wu Wei is to stop doing what you think is right, and to let yourself be pulled by some other power. Wu Wei is the grass bending in the wind. It’s the stick riding down the river.
There are many moments in life when trying harder makes things worse. When you have a mosquito (蚊子) bite, a broken bone, or a nosebleed, you leave it be. Picking and tapping only worsen the problem. So, too, with a lot of life’s major moments.
12.Why is the example of the failure to falling asleep mentioned in the text?
A.To show how common sleep loss is.
B.To introduce the Law of Reversed Effort.
C.To recommend effective ways to get to sleep
D.To prove the impossibility of willing ourselves to sleep.
13.What might help us learn riding a bike according to Paragraph 3?
A.Making reversed effort. B.Trying our best to practice.
C.Riding in a relaxed manner. D.Remembering to follow instructions.
14.Which might be an example of “Wu Wei” according to the text?
A.Ignore a mosquito bite.
B.Sail against a strong wind.
C.Will yourself to sleep when suffering sleep loss.
D.Remind yourself of instructions when riding a bike.
15.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Wu Wei, a Daoist Idea B.How to Deal with Sleep Loss
C.Reversed Effort: Key to Success D.The Harder You Try, the Harder You Fall

Thanksgiving Day parades are held in some cities and towns on or around Thanksgiving Day.
Thanksgiving Day is one of the busiest periods for travel in the US.
Thanksgiving Day is traditionally a day for families and friends to get together for a special meal.

故填of。
故填the。
此处为短语in order to do sth. 故填to save。

主语it指代前一句中的a famous opera,与动词perform是动宾关系,故在情态动词will后面加be构成被动语态 。
故将in改为on。
故将us改为we。
故将and改为or。
故将a改为an。
故将many改为much。
故去掉in。
