Yawning is smething we all d — maybe because we’re bred carrying ut uninteresting tasks r because we’re tired. Smetimes, just seeing anther peple yawn can cause yu t yawn.
But is yawning really cntagius (传染的), and why d we d it in the first place?
Many f us think we pen ur muths when we yawn t take in mre xygen (氧气), but in fact it appears there is n clear reasn.
Accrding t BBC Bitesize, new research suggests it might be because yawning cls the brain dwn and prevents it frm verheating, much like the fan in yur cmputer. This might be why we’re mre likely t feel sleepy and yawn in warm temperatures.
What is clear is that we yawn mre when we’re very tired and ready fr a shrt sleep, and we can’t cntrl when we d it — nce we start, there’s n stpping us! But it’s als true that yawning is a very cntagius behaviur. Jhn Drury, a researcher frm Sussex University, tld the BBC, “Yawning is smething that yu can’t stp. Dgs yawn when their wners yawn.
Animals yawn at each ther. It happens whether yu want t r nt. ”
His research int this behaviur fund that there is a cnnectin with ur scial grup and hw clse we are t the peple in it. If we identify with (认同) the persn wh yawns, we are likely t cpy it t.
Anther research by the University f Nttingham in 2017 fund similar results. They asked vlunteers t watch ther peple yawn. They fund their ability t prevent yawning when thers arund them yawned was limited. And the desire (渴望) t yawn was increased when peple were tld they culdn’t. They als fund, when using electrical stimulatin (刺激), that they were able t increase peple’s desire t yawn. These findings, they say, culd be useful because it culd help treat ther cnditins like Turette’s (儿童抽动症), which invlve the same area f the brain.
What is certain is that the act f yawning can happen at any time even when we think we’re nt tired — but, I hpe, nt when yu’re reading this article!
27. Accrding t BBC Bitesize, the reasn why we yawn might be .
A. ur brains need t exercise

C. ur brains need t be cled dwn
D. we are nt used t warm temperatures

B. Peple can keep themselves frm yawning when they are tld nt t d it.
C. Peple are mre likely t yawn when smene arund them yawns.
D. The findings f the research can be used t prevent sme diseases.
29. What is the passage mainly abut?
A. The prcess f yawning.
B. The reasns fr yawning.
C. The use f findings abut yawning.
D. The develpment f studying yawning.

Separate Bys and Girls at Schl
Jack White is a 17-year-ld student wh has already published a cllectin f petry with a lcal publisher. Jack believes switching (转换) t an all-bys schl changed his life.
“When I was at my ced (男女同校的) schl, petry was fr girls, nt bys. Bys were suppsed t like subjects like math, cmputers, and science. When I wrte pems, the bys at schl used t make fun f me. At my new schl, things are different.
Jack may nt realize that bys and girls als learn and think differently based n specific (特有的) bilgical develpments. These differences have an effect n hw and when bys and girls learn, s single-sex (单性别的) educatin is actually better fr children.
Take, fr example, brain develpment. The areas f the brain invlved in language, feelings, physical crdinatin (协调), and scial relatinships develp in a different rder and speed in girls and bys. Teenage girls find it easier t answer the questin, “Hw des the stry make yu feel?” than teenage bys. Research has shwn that teenage girls’ brains develp the cnnectins between language and emtins earlier than bys’ brains. A teenage by will have mre difficulty answering that questin because his brain has nt fully develped that cnnectin yet. In a single-sex classrm, everyne’s brain is develping at similar speeds, s teachers can teach accrding t their students’ actual abilities.
Bys and girls als have different hearing abilities. Girls have a sense f hearing which is tw t fur times better than bys. Wmen teachers ften speak mre quietly, s bys may have mre difficulty hearing a wman teacher if she is talking in her “nrmal” vice. The teacher needs t speak luder t get the bys’ attentin. In a single-sex schl, teachers d nt have t keep adjusting the vlume f their vice.
Jack might nt ntice the bilgical arguments why single-sex educatin is better, but he realizes that he is learning faster at his new schl. As Jack says, “I hated writing and studying English in my ld ced schl, but lk at me nw, I am a published pet! My new schl helped me becme cmfrtable with wh I really am. ”
30. What can we learn frm the passage?
A. Girls usually have less pprtunities t talk in class in a ced schl.
B. Jack was laughed at by ther bys because he was nt gd at petry.
C. The part f the brain that understands ur emtins grws slwer in bys.
D. Bys’ and girls’ brains will develp at similar speeds if they study tgether.
31. What will prbably happen in a single-sex schl?
A. Students will learn and make prgress at the same speed.
B. Teachers will give lessns based n their students’ abilities.
C. Students will be expected t learn petry as a main subject.
D. Teachers will ask mre questins invlved in students’ emtins.
32. The wrds “adjusting the vlume” in Paragraph 5 prbably mean “ ___________”.
A. changing the ludness B. increasing the clearness
C. lwering the level D. cntrlling the speed
33. What is the writer’s main purpse in writing this passage?
A. T explain why single-sex educatin is better.
B. T shw hw a by became a published pet.
C. T cmpare hw bys and girls think differently.

Many peple take running as a way t keep fit. They like t run in ht weather and enjy the feeling f being wet thrugh with sweat ( 汗 ) while running. Cld weather during winter mnths, with lw temperatures and freezing cld winds, may keep many peple frm running in the pen air.

Frm the study, every mvement runners make prduces heat. The heat can be really damaging unless the bdy can lse it. One way in which peple lse heat is by sweating. The bdy lses heat thrugh sweat. The bdy als lses it by transprting the bld t the surface f the skin and it puts mre stress n the heart, especially in ht cnditins because it’s much harder t lse heat when the utside envirnment is warm. As the result shws, running in ht temperatures results in 6 percent higher heart rates.

The gd news is that thinking in English can bring yu a huge step clser t fluency (流利)! It is nt very difficult, but it des need practice.
Mst experts nte that it’s best t start small. S, a gd first step is t think in individual (单独的) wrds. Lk arund yu. What d yu see? In yur head, try t name each bject in yur surrundings. Hwever, it wasn’t until 2007 that magazine editrs Gary Wlf and Kim Kelly, wh started tracking every mve they made, invented the term “Quantified Self.” Wlf says that self-tracking will change ur sense f self with the purpse f making us mre effective in the wrld.
Self-tracking is becming a lt mre ppular these days, as it becmes easier fr peple t use mdern technlgy tls t track what they’re ding and share it with thers. Recently, tls such as smartphnes, jurnals and apps, alng with newly published wearable things can help recrd persnal data including sleeping hurs, stress levels, heart rate, md and s n. With these tls, self-tracking can help us recall ur behavir with greater accuracy (精确) and see urselves mre clearly.
