About 15 years ago, Andrew McLindon, an businessman and cyclist, was riding his bike in Austin, Texas, when he thought about a friend’s 12-year-old son. The boy had never known the joy of biking because he suffered from hydrocephalus(脑积水), a buildup of fluid in the brain that often causes balance disturbances.
When he got home, McLindon, now 60, went online and found a three-wheel bike with a seat belt, perfect for a child with balance issues. Soon the boy was pedaling around the street with his peers, having fun and getting exercise. But there was more, as McLindon noticed his friend’s reaction. “To see his son interacting with other kids,” McLindon says. “I’ll never forget the smile on his face.”
That smile launched the McLindon Family Foundation. Funded by donations, the group works with hospitals to find children who can benefit from owning an adaptive bike — and to help craft each bike to the particular needs of the child. A bike may include a headrest, a shoulder harness, a seat belt, and a caregiver’s steering and braking mechanism in the back. The bikes are expensive — $3,000 to $4,000, and that’s with the foundation’s steep manufacturer’s discount. For kids lucky enough to get one, they’re a life changer.
“We worked with a 14-year-old who has spinal bifida(脊柱裂),” says McLindon. “She spent most days on the couch watching TV. Soon after she got her bike, she was training for special-needs triathlons(三项全能运动). In a magazine interview, she said, ‘I always knew there was an athlete in me.’”
So far, the foundation has given away 450 bikes, and that’s just a start. “I do a lot of things. I run a lot of companies,” McLindon says. “But getting these kids their bikes is the most important thing that I do.”
4.What prevented the boy from experiencing the joy of biking?
A.Learning disability. B.Vision problems.
C.Brain disturbances. D.Brain disease.
5.What is McLindon Family Foundation intended for?
A.Raising fund for hospital. B.Donating bikes for kids.
C.Selling bikes at a discount. D.Producing bikes with special design.
6.What can be inferred about the girl in paragraph 4?
A.She hurt her foots. B.She had poor vision.
C.She preferred challenges. D.She used to be an athlete.
7.Which of the following best describes Andrew McLindon?
A.Caring. B.Creative. C.Ambitious. D.Responsible.
Christy Nielson has suffered from migraine(偏头疼) since she was a kid. She had assumed that the headaches would become part of her life until she finally found a cure in her diet.
It was when she turned to Nicola, a doctor in San Diego, who listened to her symptoms and tested her for possible allergies. While waiting for the results, Nicola eliminated her diet, restricting her food to fruit, vegetables, and meat. It turned out that a protein found in wheat, which had always been part of Nielson’s diet, was to blame. Today, Nielson says her migraines are not that severe without wheat.
However, people with migraines react to food in very different ways. A study, published by researchers at the National Institutes of Health, found that a diet higher in fish oils rather than vegetable oils helped people to reduce the frequency and intensity. For others, the relief comes from plants, not fish. Last year the British Medical Journal published a report about a patient who had experienced remarkable relief from migraines after switching to a plant-based diet. Clearly, what works for one person may not work for another.
So, if you suspect that food may contribute to your migraines, there are several steps you can take to check. Record the foods you have eaten, the time you ate, and when your headache symptoms occurred. After identifying your allergy foods, see if removing them from your diet is gone for good. Be careful about dropping too many foods, or it can lead to lack of nutrition if not done carefully. Consider adding fish oil to your diet or trying to eat more plant-based foods. Try to experiment with different diets to see if changing your eating habits will cure your migraines.
8.How did the doctor find the cause of Nielson’s headache?
A.By changing her diet. B.By restricting her food.
C.By testing her allergies. D.By examining her body.
9.What can we learn about people with migraines according the passage?
A.They respond to foods variously.
B.They are sensitive to vegetable oils.
C.They have different ways to obtain foods.
D.They work differently to reduce headaches
10.What should people do to reduce migraines according to the passage?
A.Be a food detective. B.Add fish oil to diets.
C.Drop foods from diets. D.Record headache symptoms.
11.Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
A.A Story of Migraine Cure B.A Way for Migraine Treatment
C.A Research on Migraine headaches D.A Discovery in Migraine Symptoms
Many People may agree that replacing fossil fuels, directly or indirectly, with renewable electricity, is the best way to remove carbon from industry, transport and other areas. But the areas like cement and aviation (航空业) find batteries are too heavy and hydrogen (made using renewable electricity) too bulky to do the job easily. Hydrocarbon aviation fuels are thus likely to be around for a while.
However, such fuels needn’t be fossil. A study published in Nature, by Steinfeld and his colleagues, shows how they might be obtained from thin air. They designed and tested a system reimagining the natural process of photosynthesis (光合作用). The process has three stages. First, they absorbed CO2 and water from the atmosphere using a special device. Then they employed concentrated sunlight to heat a material called cerium oxide which, when so heated, reacts with both CO2 and water. The reaction with CO2 creates CO, with water producing hydrogen. The mixture of CO and hydrogen is called syngas, which was finally turned into what can be used as air-captured fuel. For their test, the team chose another route, which led to methanol (甲醇) instead. But the general idea is the same.
The equipment for the team’s test, installed on the roof of ETH’s Machine Laboratory Building, produced 32ml of pure methanol per seven-hour day. A calculation suggests that replacing the world’s aviation-fuel market entirely in this way would need 45,000 km² of suitable sunshine land. That sounds a lot, but is equivalent to about 0.5% of the area of the Sahara Desert.
Air-captured aviation fuel would certainly need its path to the market by collecting appropriate carbon taxes on fossil varieties, and possibly other measures. But Steinfeld’s experiment seems to have proved a credible and potentially extendable way to go about making the fuel.
12.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Change the size. B.Disappear in the fields.
C.Exist in the fields. D.Replace the renewable electricity.
13.What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A.Aviation fuels are obtained from atmosphere.
B.Methanol was finally obtained in the test.
C.The syngas is the mixture of CO2 and hydrogen.
D.The way to make aircraft fuel is pollution-free.
14.Why does the author mention the Sahara Desert in Paragraph3?
A.To prove a theory. B.To show a result.
C.To state a fact. D.To make a comparison.
15.What’s the author’s attitude towards the future of air-captured aviation fuel?
A.Cautious. B.Ambiguous.
C.Disapproving. D.Favorable.

47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It bothered Ben every time he went through the kitchen. It was that little metal container on the shelf above Martha’s cook stove. He probably would not have noticed it so much if Martha had not repeatedly told him never to touch it. The reason was that it contained a “secret herb” from her mother, and since she had no way of ever refilling the container, she was concerned that if Ben or anyone else ever picked it up and looked inside, they might accidentally drop it and spill its valuable contents.
The container was so old that much of its original red and gold floral(花纹的) colors had faded. Not only Martha’s fingers had gripped it there, but her mother’s and her grandmother’s had, too. Martha didn’t know for sure, but she felt that perhaps even her great-grand-mother had used this same container and its “secret herb”. All Ben knew for sure was that shortly after he’d married Martha, her mother had brought the container to Martha and told her to make the same loving use of its contents as she had.
Whatever was in that container, it sure worked, for Ben felt Martha was the best cook in the world. Anyone who ever ate in their house greatly praised Martha’s cooking.
But why wouldn’t she let Ben touch that little container? It was so fine whenever Martha sprinkled (撒) it over the food she was preparing. She obviously had to use very little of it because there was no way of refilling the container.
Ben became increasingly eager to look into that container just once, but never brought himself to do so.
Then one day Martha became ill. Ben took her to the hospital, where they kept her overnight. When he returned home, he felt extremely lonely. Martha had never been gone overnight before. When it neared supper time, he wandered into the kitchen to see what might be in the refrigerator. Then the container on the shelf immediately came into view. He quickly looked away, but his curiosity drew him back.

47. Ben looked away again and lifted the cover of a large cake pan on the kitchen counter. There was a Martha’s great cake. He cut off a large piece, sat down at the kitchen table when his eyes went back to that container again. What would it hurt if he looked inside? Why was Martha so secretive about that container, anyway? Ben took a bite and debated with himself—should he or shouldn’t he? Finally he could no longer resist. He set the container on the counter. Feeling so scared to look inside, Ben’s eyes opened wide—the container was empty, except for a little folded slip of paper at the bottom.
Ben reached down for the paper, his big rugged hand struggling to get inside. A brief note was scrawled inside, and Ben immediately recognized the handwriting as that of Martha’s mother. Very simply it said: “Martha—To everything you make, add a dash of love.” With tears rolling down, Ben replaced the note and the container, and quietly went back to finishing his cake. Now he completely understood why it tasted so good.
