Microplastics(微塑料) have entered seemingly every part of the planet today, including rain over the Rocky Mountains. Recently German scientists have even found them in Arctic(北极) snow.
Microplastics are pieces of plastic smaller than 5 millimeters(毫米). Sadly, scientists found 1, 800pieces of microplastic per liter of snow.
Scientists have been puzzling over how this flood of pollution makes its way to the Arctic. A new study from Germany's Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research finds that microplastics in the snow come from the air. They fall off and are moved by the wind, just like dust. They mix with ice in the air and fall in the Arctic as snow.
Finding these plastics in Arctic snow means that we may breathe them in. An even higher amount of microplastics was found in the snow around cities.
Are they bad for us? Scientists cannot answer this question for now, according to the World Health Organization. We do know that our bodies cannot take in" large" pieces of microplastics. However, if the plastics are small enough, they can find ways into our bodies and stay there for a long time, which can be bad for our health. What's more, earlier studies have shown that microplastics may contribute to lung cancer risk.
Microplastics have also been found in rivers and oceans around the world. The research has found that they flow over long distances and into oceans, doing harm to ecosystems along the way. They start in our wastewater, when we wash clothes with plastic fibers(纤维). The wastewater then flows into rivers and out to sea, where they are eaten by sea animals. If people then eat these animals, it means that we're eating the plastic as well.
44. What have German scientists discovered about the Arctic?
A. Different kinds of trash have been found there.
B. It has been polluted by microplastics.
C. It remains the last clean place left on the Earth.
D. 1, 800 pieces of microplastics were found there.

Everyone wants to be successful, including students. We are always taught by adults that we have to study hard at school in order to be successful. However, this is not completely right.
In some parents’ eyes, school grades matter most for their kids. In fact, there are many other things to consider besides the school subjects, for example, how to be a happy person, what to do to keep healthy, and how to get along well with others. That is to say, school is not just enough if you want to have a great life.
Doing well in school is different from doing well in life. Studies show that people who failed at school may not end up failing in life. You may have already known that some famous people, like Thomas Edison and Steve Jobs, didn't do very well at school or even failed to finish school. In fact, there are a lot more than just the big shots who are successful in life without finishing school. They take every chance to learn and finally make it to the top.
Life is such a long lesson that you can’t define a person’s success by just one section of it. If you have already finished school, keep learning because what you have learned at school will never be enough to live a satisfying life in the future. If you are still studying, whether you are good or bad at school, don't take your school results too seriously as long as you have put your heart into it. Keep learning to make the most of your talents. That's how you can live a happy and successful life.
