Diminishing (减弱) English education in school? My answer is absolutely NO! Although “dumb English” does exist, it is not a reason to cancel the status of English as a major subject. It is a problem in English teaching, and the solution to this problem needs to be discussed. English is an important tool for human communication in the era of globalization. It plays an important role in broadening students’ views and enabling China to gain a head start in globalization and information technology.
Zhou Yaokai, 18, Sichuan
As far as I’m concerned, making English a less important subject in the examination will not improve English education. Conversely (相反地), this may make it even worse. If English classes are reduced in high school, students will have no choice but to spend more time on out-of-class(课外) study, thus deepening the involution (内卷) in English education. Meanwhile, for areas with poorer education, this will make schools and students think that English is not important, which goes against (违背) the original intention. In my opinion, we should focus on making the English education environment better through contextualized (情景化的) teaching rather than dull grammar teaching. In this way, our English expression can be more flexible, which can help spread the voice of China.
Xu Ziming, 17, Jiangsu
As an English major, I hold a firm disagreement with lowering the position of English in exams. In this score-oriented (分数导向的) society, once the standard is lowered, people will pay less attention to English. What we need to do is not deny the importance of English, but reform the curriculum (课程) system into a fair, time-adapted one. Otherwise, students from remote areas are less likely to broaden their horizons through language. In this competitive society, English, as the basic way to link with the wider globe, remains necessary.
Sun Hanqiao, 20, Sichuan
I think English shouldn’t be downgraded in the examination but the content of English teaching should be adjusted. If any country wants to join the world economic system, language communication is necessary. As a commonly-used language, English is a basic tool for going into the international world. As we are now shouldering (肩负)the task of introducing China to the world, English education in China is even more important.
11.Why can’t we cancel the position of English as a major subject?
a. Because English is a tool for human communication.
b. Because English can help broaden students’ views.
c. Because English can reduce the involution.
d. Because English is used less and less in our daily life.
e. Because English can help spread the voice of China.
A. abc B. cde C. abe D. bcd
12.Who thinks that English is a tool to communicate with the world?
A. Both Zhou Yaokai and Sun Hanqiao B. Both Zhou Yaokai and Xu Ziming
C. Both Xu Ziming and Sun Hanqiao D. All three of them
13.Why does Zhou Yaokai say reducing English classes will deepen the involution in English education?
A. Because it will make some schools and students think English is not important.
B. Because students have to spend more time on out-of-class study.
C. Because students from some areas may play less attention to English learning.
D. Because it can reduce the school burden of students.
14.Which of the following statements is wrong?
A. All three of them think we should improve the way of English teaching.
B. All three of them disagree to lower the position of English as a major subject.
C. Reducing English classes won’t help spread the voice of China.
D. Reducing English classes can lead to us losing contact with the world.
15.What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. We should strengthen our English leaning.
B. We should pay attention the importance of English learning.
C. We shouldn’t lower the position of English as a major subject.
D. We should adjust the content of English teaching.

The new and publicly-available ChatGPT is a type of AI that has been “trained” by looking at over 8 million web pages. When asked a question, ChatGPT uses this training to produce detailed answers that often seem like they were written by a human. You can ask it anything and it will give you answers to not only follow-up questions but also professional questions (although it does sometimes make mistakes). You can also ask it to write text, such as short stories or essays. The technology is so promising (有前途的) that some people believe it will overtake(超过) Google in the near future.
For many years it has been expected that AI will become an important part of our lives, and for just as long there have been concerns of the trouble that AI could cause. In the 20th century, scientists, philosophers and writers sometimes worried that AI would become too powerful. In the short story I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, a giant supercomputer has killed every human on earth except five people it keeps to torture(折磨). And in the 1984 film The Terminator, a powerful AI called Skynet uses time travel to send a robot into the past to try and kill the mother of a brave and strong fighter. On the other hand, some people were optimistic of advanced technologies’ potential (潜力) to build a better world. In the 1960s TV show Lost in Space, a family of humans were helped by a friendly robot named Robby.
Nowadays, there is less concern of an all-powerful AI trying to destroy the world, and we are not expecting friendly robots just yet. That doesn’t mean there is not a lot of excitement and concern being felt towards new technologies like AI, though. ChatGPT is a great example of a modern technology that is causing mixed feelings.
It’s too soon to say what kind of influence ChatGPT will have on our lives. Let’s hope that, if ChatGPT does become bigger and more popular, its effects are mostly positive. So, what do you think? Will ChatGPT be good, bad, or somewhere in between for humankind?
21. Why can ChatGPT produce detailed answers like they are from a human?
A. Scientists teach ChatGPT to talk like a human. B. ChatGPT has looked at over 8 million web pages.
C. ChatGPT depends on Google’s basic information. D. Many people answer the question on the Internet.
22. Which has a positive attitude towards AI??
A. Lost in Space B. The Terminator
C. Skynet D. I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream
23. What does the underlined word “optimistic” mean in Chinese?
A. 先进的 B. 好奇的 C. 乐观的 D. 片面的
24. Which is NOT true about ChatGPT according to the text?
A. ChatGPT can solve math problems. B. ChatGPT can take the place of humankind.
C. ChatGPT can communicate with people. D. ChatGPT can offer help in writing essays.
25. What opinion does the writer agree with?
A. People are always crazy about new technologies.
B. People become more worried about AI at present.
C. ChatGPT is a perfect AI technology with no doubt.
D. ChatGPT brings people a mixture of joy and worries.
