It was Lefteris Arapakis’s first expedition on a fishing boat, and he didn’t expect what the nets would pull up. There were scorpionfish, red mullet and sea bream. But there was also a bright red can of Coke.

Arapakis, whose family had plied(定期往来) the waters near Athens for five generations, pulled the can out of the net and turned it over to look at the sell-by date stamped on the bottom 1987, seven years older than him. It had been in the Mediterranean for almost three decades.

Every day, the fishing boat— and thousands just like it on the crystalline Mediterranean — caught old bottles, plastic foam, flip-flops and other detritus(碎屑) in its nets. And every day, its crew tossed everything back into the undulating waters, only hauling back what would bring cash.

So Arapakis, now 28, had an idea: he would try to convince the fishing industry to treat plastic as a catch. In 2016, he launched a nonprofit focused on sea cleanup and fishing education called Enaleia, a play on Greek words that calls to mind sustainable fishing. Once the fishers brought the plastic ashore, he would recycle it and pay them for their trouble. Six years into the project, he has signed up more than half of Greece’s large-scale fishing fleet — hundreds of ships — to pull in the plastic they gather as they ply the Mediterranean. He plans to keep expanding globally.

This year, after Arapakis spread his efforts across Greece and much of Italy, he expects to gather nearly 200 tons of plastic — enough to fill a football field five feet high with tiny pieces of plastic. That’s more than 7,500 pounds of plastic every week. And others have taken notice: the United Nations Environment Program named him a Young Champion of the Earth in 2020 — its highest environmental honor for people under 30.

“If we hadn’t taken action, we would have had that plastic floating around the Mediterranean forever,” Arapakis said. At the beginning, convincing fishermen to join was painstaking work, requiring a lot of face time in unfamiliar villages. It wasn’t easy: The industry doesn’t always cotton to environmentalists, since many fishermen think the global plastics activists want to take away their livelihoods.

    24. According to the passage, when was Arapakis probably born?

    A. 1987.           B. 1980.           C. 1994.          D. 1997.

    25. Why did Arapakis want to persuade the fishers to regard plastic as a catch?

ABecause he considered the detritus pollutant.

BBecause fishers focused only on their own profit instead of sea cleanup.

CBecause he wanted to launch a nonprofit focused on sea cleanup.

DBecause he tried to educate the fishers how to deal with plastic.

    26. What can we learn about Arapakis?

    A. He made big profits by selling plastic.

    B. He is the youngest person to receive the highest environmental honor.

    C. He has taken timely action to make plastic disappear forever around the Mediterranean.

    D. A lot of fishermen were unwilling to join him at first.

    27. What does this text mainly talk about?

    A. A bright red Coke can floating in the Mediterranean.

    B. An effort of a young to dispose the plastic problem in the Mediterranean.

    C. A nonprofit project aimed at sea cleanup in the Mediterranean.

    D. An acute plastic problem emerging in the Mediterranean.

    C

At present, in many American cities especially, many teachers in the public schools say they are underpaid. They point to jobs such as secretary or truck driver, which often pay more to start than that of a teacher. In many other fields, such as law, medicine, computer science, a beginning worker may make more than a teacher who has taught for several years.

Teaching has never been a profession that attracted people interested in high salaries. It is by history a profession that has provided rewards in addition to money—the satisfactions of sharing knowledge, of influencing others, of guiding young people. But in the past several years, there are more difficulties in teaching, for many, than there are rewards.

Unruly students, especially in big cities, large classes and a lack of support from the public in terms of money and understanding have led many public school teachers to leave the profession.

As a result, many of the best students, who would have chosen teaching as their life career in the past, are going into other fields.

Another reason for this change in teacher candidates is the changing status of women in the United States. Until the late 1960s and 1970s, one of the most popular choices for women was teaching. But as other professions, such as law and medicine opened up to women, women stopped pouring into teacher training programs. Thus, a major pool of excellent candidates for the teaching profession dwindled.

Bit by bit government officials and others realized that the status of the teacher had suffered. They talked about change. But the change in a vast society like the United States is not easy. People's attitudes have formed over many years, and sometimes change takes many years.

    28. What’ s the main idea of paragraph 1?

    1. Teachers in public schools are paid less than people in other fields in America.
    2. Many teachers in the public schools are unemployed.
    3. Teachers in America are paid less because they don’t teach long enough.
    4. Many public school teachers in America leave school because of low salaries.

    29. What might cause a teacher to quit his job according to the passage?

    A. Too many classes.          B. Heavy teaching burden.

    C. Disobedient students.             D. Lack of support from parents.

30.What does the underlined word “dwindled” mean

      A. Expanded.       B. Decreased      C. Changed.     D. Enhanced.

    31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

    1. Government officials are unwilling to change the status of the teachers.
    2. Government officials have taken measures to change the status of the teachers.
    3. People's attitudes towards being a teacher in a vast society can be easily changed.
    4. It has a long way for the government to go to change the teachers’ present situation.

    D

Jobs that use both technical and creative thinking are among the fastest-growing and highest-paying ones, according to a new report from Burning Glass Technologies, a job market analytic company in Boston.

It studied millions of job postings to better understand the skills companies require. What they discovered was that many want workers with experience in such new abilities as big-data gathering and analytic, or design using digital technology.

Burning Glass came up with the term “hybrid jobs” to describe these kinds of positions, which require skills not normally found together. For example, these hybrid jobs might require people with skills in data science and advertising, or engineering and sales.“The jobs of the future don’t involve just one skill,“ says Matt Sigelman, chief manager of Burning Glass.

The company expects general job growth of about 10% between 2018 and 2028,but the hybrid jobs by 21%. What’s more, hybrid jobs pay more than positions that call for a traditional set of skills. For example, a marketing manager mastering a database program gets paid 41% more than a traditional one, with an average yearly salary of $100,000. Moreover, an engineer who improves her sales skills and becomes a consulting engineer for a software company can more than double her pay from $180,000 to $400,000.

While data shows that workers who fail to update their skills will be able to find fewer jobs, people in hybrid jobs are less likely to become out of date, with only 12% possibility of being replaced by machine, compared with 42% for general jobs, says Burning Glass. Hybrid jobs are mostly not beginner roles, so they mainly go to workers with years of experience and, most importantly, more training after leaving college. That means workers, bosses and educators will have to think about how to better prepare people for these roles.

    32. What is the purpose of the company researching into job advertisements?

    A. To understand the growth of best paid workers.

    B. To compare workers’ experience with new abilities.

    C. To find out companies’ requirements about skills.

    D. To tell the possible changes in future job market.

    33. Which of the following jobs can be hybrid?

    A. Data engineer. B. Machine operator.

    C. Marketing manager. D. Medical consultant.

    34. How much is a traditional marketing manager possibly paid every year?

    A. $180,000.         B. $71,000.       C. $41,000.         D. $10,000.

    35. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?

    A. Future Jobs Requiring “Hybrid” Skills. B. How to Get Trained for Jobs.

    C. Tips on Finding Fastest-Growing Jobs. D. The Jobs with Highest Pay.

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Boundaries can be a frightening term, but they're very simply the expectations and needs that help us feel safe and comfortable. Work is the relationship we spend the most time in, and yet it's also the place where we have the hardest time setting limits.   36

Identify the boundaries you need to set. You can tell a colleague what hours you are and aren't available and that you prefer to talk by phone rather than instant messaging. Especially with your bosses, you can show how you like feedback. For example, "I work best with clear deadlines. Can you please set one?"   37   For example, “It makes me feel uncomfortable when you share gossip at my desk.”

Think about when and how to make the statement.  38   You’d better set them as early as possible. That's a beautiful way to show up in a new work environment with people already knowing what we can and can't do. Moreover, it's perfectly acceptable to set boundaries when you don’t feel good. If you get a headache when having five meetings in a day, tell yourself that four will be your maximum.

39  If you say you're not available after six, don't respond to the group chat.  When you respond to emails or agree to look at that proposal out of those bounds, you're teaching people that the boundary isn't real, that it’s OK to violate it. Consistency is really key here.  40

    1. Stick to the boundaries you set.
    2. Don’t make response quickly.
    3. Boundaries are like classroom rules.
    4. Here are three steps to help you get started.
    5. That might mean restating the boundary more than once.
    6. You might be the inspiration that helps them set better boundaries.
    7. You can even set boundaries on how you interact with people socially.

    第二节(满分25分)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my songs, so when the annual winter recital was canceled, I was disappointed. I had looked forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs.

My mom had a wonderful idea, however, to turn this disappointing letdown into something worthwhile. "You can perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living," my mom suggested brightly. "I'm sure the seniors there who do not have families visit them that often, would really appreciate the music and you could play more than just two songs."

I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the recitals was that I was limited to playing just a couple of songs. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win-win situation because not only would I get to play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the residents there with some lively tunes.

My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for me to perform. In the coming days, I worked especially hard to polish up fifteen pieces that I thought the crowd would enjoy, including many old classics.

When the much-anticipated day finally arrived, my family and I drove to Carriage House. Walking through the enormous double doors, we stepped into an entryway that overlooked the spacious grand dining room. Right at the entrance to the dining room stood the piano as if it were just waiting to make some music to liven the place up a bit. At nearly every table several gray-haired women or men were seated enjoying their dinner and the company that the crowded room provided. Despite the conversations going on at various tables though, isolation hung like a dark cloud in the room.

Almost immediately, we were greeted by an old woman with a walker who introduced herself as Phyllis in charge of Carriage House. She welcomed me and led me to the stage.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

As I sat down on the bench, I pressed a key on the piano and was surprised to hear no sound. __________________________________________________________________________

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Nervousness melted away and I started to enjoy the performance with the old.

    参考范文:

    Dear Eric,

I'm more than happy to know you are keen on "Learning from Lei Feng", an activity held in our school this March. More details are as follows.

With the intention of inspiring us students to follow Lei Feng's good deeds, it involved various forms ranging from singing the song"Learn from Lei Feng", reading Lei Feng's Diary to making posters of Lei Feng's stories. Some classes even offered to pick up garbage around their neighborhood while others did voluntary work at local nursing homes.

Through this activity, I firmly believe, the idea of learning from Lei Feng has been deeply implanted in our hearts.

As I sat down on the bench, I pressed a key on the piano and was surprised to hear no sound. Feeling as if the whole world was watching me, I was struck dead with embarrassment. How could I perform the song without the piano? I was on pins and needles when Phyllis slowly made her way to the front of the crowd of dinners and announced in a comforting tone, "This girl has come to sing for us but the piano seems to be a little nervous." Almost immediately, there was scattered applause and several people stepped forward to help me plug in the piano and set the microphone. With everything ready, I took a deep breath and commenced my performance.

Nervousness melted away and I started to enjoy the performance with the old. One woman got up and began to animatedly dance about the room. Some of the people swayed in their chairs to the beat of the music while others tapped their toes. The performance ended up with a storm of applause from the crowd. I realized that it was far better than a piano recital because almost everyone seemed to truly appreciate my music and I' m proud that I have the power to spread kindness to them. It ended up being a blessing in disguise that the recital was canceled, leading to me sharing the gift of music with those who needed it most.
