As Rendall and his friend Bourke were searching for holiday gifts, they came across a lion cub(幼兽) for sale in a store in London. They bought it and named it Christian. It was a lovely animal, full of character. They looked after Christian for about a year, during which time an amazing bond formed between the two men and the lion. The three of them shared a flat over a furniture shop on London's King's Road, where cute and intelligent Christian quickly became a local celebrity, cruising(开车兜风) the streets in the back of a Bentley, popping for lunch at a local restaurant, and even posing for a fashion advertisement.
But soon, Christian outgrew Rendall's flat and soon even the church garden where he went for exercise wasn't large enough for him. They realized that their pet needed to be among other lions and deserved to live free in his natural environment. With their friends' help, Rendall and Bourke took Christian to Kenya and placed it under the expert care of "the father of lions" George Adamson, where the two would introduce Christian to the wild. Rendall and Bourke spent several months with Christian, helping him adapt to the new living environment, and then left unwillingly. A year later, they went back to Kenya, hoping to find the lion. When they finally found Christian, incredibly, Christian walked over slowly. Then suddenly he recognized them! He ran over and jumped up on them. They received a loving welcome from their lion, who was fit in with Africa and a life with other lions in the wild.
Rendall and Bourke's extraordinary reunion with Christian was filmed and is subject of a wonderful documentary and a book. The film of their reunion was found on a Japanese blog and posted on YouTube accompanied by I will Always love You, sung by Whitney Houston. The clip of the reunion was recently placed on YouTube and has received over 45 million hits.

Digital hoarding (also known as e-hoarding or data hoarding) means accumulating a large amount of electronic materials, even though they are no longer valuable to the user.
Antoinette, 25, said, "Though not well-organized, the WhatsApp chat with my best friends in high school will never be deleted. It's interesting looking back so many years ago and who I was then, and I can see how the friendship and relationship have changed since then."
Besides the "friends" we keep on social media, digital files, folders, music, movies, computer programs are also forms of digital hoarding. Both undergraduates and graduates expressed feeling overwhelmed with the sheer volume of technological leftover data: lecture notes, PowerPoint slides, PDFs of research, snapshots of classroom whiteboards-not to mention their own ever—swelling Facebook friends they didn't know but were afraid of unfriending.
I am also a digital hoarder. My first home screen is filled with apps I use every day-Facebook, Spotify, Twitter, Outlook, Weather, etc. My second home screen has apps that I don't use quite as much, but still want within easy reach-billing apps, shopping, and smart home apps. My third home screen is where things get complex and out of control, just a mess of games, work and business-related apps, and a ton of diverse data that I keep telling myself I'll need for that one thing on that one day that has never come and probably never will.
Hoarders fall into different categories. "Collectors" are organized, systematic and in control of their data. "Accidental hoarders" are disorganized, don't know what they have, and don't have control over it. The "compliant hoarders" keeps data on behalf of their companies. Finally, "anxious hoarders" have strong emotional ties to their data and are worried about deleting it.
People are more resistant when it comes to actually getting rid of their precious possessions perhaps because they anthropomorphize them, treating lifeless objects as if they had thoughts and feelings.
8、What is the purpose of the author in writing the text?
A. To introduce digital hoarding. B. To present a new phenomenon online.
C. To offer tips on handling online data. D. To report digital collectors.
9、Which type of digital hoarder does Antoinette belong to?
A. Collectors. B. Accidental hoarders.
C. Compliant hoarder. D. Anxious hoarders.
10、What does the underlined word "anthropomorphize" in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Personalize. B. Symbolize. C. Naturalize. D. Realize.
11、What is the author's attitude towards digital hoarding?
A. Favorable. B. Disapproving. C. Objective. D. Uncaring.
A well-received recommendation to drink eight glasses of water (or around 2 litres) a day may have led to 20 million litres of water wasted each day in UK according to scientists. The latest study, the most thorough one to date on water turnover(周转), finds that people have a wide range of water intakes and that many people only require about 1.5 to 1.8 litres a day, lower than recommended.
"The current recommendation, ignoring the water content of food, which can contribute a large proportion of our overall intake, is not supported scientifically at all," said Yosuke Yamada, one of the paper's first authors.
The study, published in the journal Science, assessed the water intake of 5,604 people aged between 8 days and 96 years old from 23 countries. The research involved people drinking a glass of water in which some of the hydrogen atoms(氢原子) were replaced by deuterium(氘), a stable isotope(同位素) of hydrogen that is harmless. The rate of removal of the extra deuterium reveals how quickly water in the body is turned over.
The study found the measure varied widely depending on a person's age, gender, activity levels and surroundings. Energy expenditure is the biggest factor in water turnover, with the highest values observed in men aged 20 to 35, with an average of 4.2 litres a day, about 0.9litre more than that of women of the same age. This decreased with age, averaging 2.5 litres a day for men in their 90s. Newborn babies turned over the largest proportion(比例), replacing about 28% of the water in their bodies every day.
"This study suggests people just ignore the 'one size fits all' recommendation and follow what their body is telling them," said Prof John Speakman of the University of Aberdeen, aco-author, "If 40 million adults in the UK were following the guidelines and drank half a litre of clean water more than they need each day that's 20 million litres of wasted water every day. There is a cost to drinking more than we need even if it's not a health one."
12、What can we learn about the 8 glasses of water recommendation?
A. It has been widely accepted. B. It has solid scientific basis.
C. It considers water in food. D. It causes severe water pollution.
13、How did the scientist get the conclusion of their experiment?
A. By assessing water quantity. B. By measuring water turnover rate.
C. By analysing water component. D. By conducting water quality analysis.
14、What can we know from the new finding?
A. Women in their 30s turn over 0.9 litres a day
B. The older a person is, the more water he needs.
C. Newborn babies turn over the largest amount of water.
D. Men turn over more water than women of the same age.
15、What could be the best title of the passage?
A. Less water helps you away from doctors.
B. You need less water but I want more.
C. Slow down your water turnover.
D. There's no cost to drink more.

Kindness Is Precious
The sound of glass breaking is instantly recognizable. I'd been telling my best friend Missi a silly story and had spun(急转身)around in the living room when I heard that sound and froze.
When I looked down at the floor, it was full of tiny red, pink and clear glass pieces. Missi said fearfully, "Oh, no, not the vase."
"Why? What did I do?" My face reddened.
"Amy, that glass vase was one of the few items my grandparents had passed down to my mum through generations in my family," Missi replied nervously. "If you'd broken anything else in the apartment, I would have gladly said I did it. But you're going to have to tell my mom that it was your fault, and she's going to be really mad."
I was terrified. I'd destroyed a priceless vase. Why did I have to spin around like that?
We gathered up the broken pieces. I kept saying that maybe it could be fixed, but Missi said gently that it didn't look possible. I insisted we keep the pieces. But the glass was so delicate that some of it broke even more as we tried to sweep it up carefully.
Missi said her mom would be home at any time. I had got a few butterflies in my stomach. Would her mom criticise or punish me? Would she tell me I couldn't stay in their apartment for the weekend? I couldn't stop recalling those fifteen seconds in my mind, me spinning fast and the sound of glass crashing. The only thing I could think of to say was "I'm sorry."
A couple of minutes later we heard a key turn in the door. Her mom was home. Right from the start, we could see she was in a good mood. "Hello! It's hot today. I want to treat you girls to that frozen yogurt. Let's go!" her mom said, pointing at the open door.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
"Before that, I need to tell you something really important," I said.

16、答案:FGAEC
解析:①根据空格前的句子“I started my love of laundry(洗衣) even before 3. I spent hours staring at the clothes circling in the washing machine. The love deepened as I grew older. I learned how to wash and dry before I was ten.”(我在3岁之前就开始喜欢洗衣服了。
G项“Caring for clothes is also a way to experience and express love.”(料理衣服也是一种体验和表达爱的方式)正好说的是料理衣服可以让我们体验和表达爱。
Yes, even your delicates. Don't worry—warm water will not fade or shrink your clothes.”(是的,你的黑色衣服。 故选A项。
④空格处是该部分的主题句,下文的内容“One of my fondest childhood memories is keeping Granny company as she hung up laundry in the bright sunshine. It was my duty to hand her laundry pins(夹子). Late in the afternoon, we'd return to fold each piece and drop it into the basket. I remember her enjoying the process, and so did I.”(我最美好的童年记忆之一就是陪着奶奶在明媚的阳光下晾衣服。 所以,把E项“Try to line dry, at least sometimes.”(尽量把衣服晾干,至少有时候)填入空格处,符合题意。故选E项。
⑤空格前的句子“You might not have time to hang up every load of your wash. But you may want to consider line-drying some of your things. It'll save energy and your clothes.”(你可能没有时间把每一件衣服都挂起来。

"Before that, I need to tell you something really important," I said. "What is it, my dear?" her mom asked. She closed the door and walked closer to me. Our hands almost touched. I could feel her eyes study me, and she watched me quietly. Feeling awful about the matter, my heart pounded wildly. "I'm sorry, I-I spun around and didn't look beforehand. The glass vase behind the couch fell. It broke. We saved the pieces, in case it can be fixed. But it all looks like small pieces of glass now. Could you please forgive me?"
Her mom looked at me, saying nothing for what felt like forever. This terrified me even more. Then suddenly she erupted into a loud scream of joy that filled the entire apartment. She embraced me, kissing me on both cheeks. "Oh, thank you! I always hated that ugly vase, but I had to keep it because it was passed down in my family. Now it's gone! You've done me a huge favor!" She kissed me again. I couldn't stop the tears running down my face. I was so relieved to have apologized, but I was also in shock. This was not at all the reaction I had expected.
