Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been passed down for more than 2,000 years in China. TCM includes acupuncture (针灸), medicine, exercise such as tai chi and qigong, and other treatments. Today, TCM is not only used in Asia, but also more and more popular in the US.
In New York City’s Chinatown, a lot of patients visit Wu Yiqiao, a TCM master from Zhejiang. Some of them are Chinese, and some are Americans. Wu has been practicing TCM in the US for 28 years. He has a deep understanding of TCM. “TCM, acupuncture and other TCM treatments are of great help to patients,” Wu said. “They can help reduce the pain without surgery.”
TCM is so useful that some Americans have also chosen to work on it. Frank Griffo has been an acupuncturist (针灸师) in California for about 18 years. In 2005, he graduated from the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco. He then spent seven years studying the best acupuncture methods.

Mountain outfits (穿搭) are the new style in China
①Healthy lifestyle has led many people to do more nature and outdoor activities like camping and skateboarding. Following this, “going to the mountains” has become popular among Chinese people.
②Mountain-style outfits, both practical and fashionable, first became popular in Japan as “yama” (meaning “mountain” in Japanese) clothes. Now such clothes have caught on in Chinese fashion as well. Colors such as green, and gray are preferred by young people from big cities. They would rather join outdoor activities and wear outdoor outfits.
③According to the online market “Tmall”, when the Singles’ Day shopping started on Oct 31, 2022, the sales of camping and climbing equipment (设备) jumped by 115 percent and 81.2 percent during the first hour, compared with the same period in 2021.
④Besides those dressing up in the mountain style for practical outdoor activities, more Chinese youth are now following the style for everyday wear. Jiang Wei, a Beijing-based fashion writer, said that Arc’teryx has now become a fashion brand (品牌). It used to be mainly popular among those people who are crazy about outdoor activities. Many fashion brands, including some global luxury (奢侈品) brands, have set up outdoor fashion lines. Prada, for example, introduced an outdoor series in 2021 to follow the fashion.
⑤“Mountain-style outfits satisfy the needs that customers want to get closer to nature. People go for a simple, practical and natural lifestyle. ①Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to their young trees?
②Professor Simard, forest ecologist (森林生态学家) from the University of British Columbia, explains how trees are much more complex (复杂的) than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin (达尔文) thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard and her team have made a new discovery and showed just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their group work and support, passing around necessary nutrition (营养) like Nitrogen (氮) and carbon “depending on who needs it”.
③Nitrogen and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌) networks. This makes sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive nutrition to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons (神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is cut down, it influences all.
④Simard talks about “mother trees”. These are usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. These “Mother Trees” are connected to all the other trees in the forest by this network of fungi, and may manage the resources of the whole trees and plants in the forest. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the young trees, transporting important nutrition to them so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down “Mother Trees” without paying attention to these highly complex “tree societies” or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances to save the whole forest.
⑤“We didn’t take any notice of it” Simard says sadly. “Mother trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chances.” If we could explain the message clearly to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.
41.The underlined sentence “the opposite is true” in Paragraph ② probably means that trees ______.
A.compete for survival B.protect their own wealth
C.depend on each other D.provide support for dying trees
42.“Mother trees” are very important because ______.
A.they look the largest in size in the forest B.all the other trees depend on them
C.they pass on nutrition to dying trees D.they transport important nutrition to young trees after dying
43.What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to (指的是)?
A.how “tree societies” work B.how trees grow old
C.how forestry industry develops D.how young trees survive
44.What’s the proper structure (结构) for the passage?
45.What can we can learn from the passage?
A.Charles Darwin had the same opinion as Simard.
B.trees communicate with each other less deeply than we think.
C.if “Mother Trees” are cut down, they make no difference to the forest.
D.nitrogen and carbon play an important role in the forest ecological system.

The Human-like Technology That Is Going to Change the World
As I write about technology for a living, I’m used to seeing small leaps in new technological progress. But sometimes, there are things that will surprise me. At the end of last year, a company called OpenAI release (发布) a new AI technology that feels almost like it is going to change the world.
The technology is called ChatGPT—though you can mistake it for magic. So what exactly is it?
ChatGPT is a computer program that can understand and reply to human language. It is trained on a lot of text. It can be used for things like having a conversation or finishing a sentence. Another area where I’ve found it rather useful is that it can write computer code (编码). When I asked it to write me a program in a quite difficult way, in seconds it produced something that would take me hours to do by hand.
It isn’t, however, completely human-like. For example, it sometimes produces things that sound true, but are just totally wrong. And it can’t do maths—I asked it what is the square root of 717,409 and it told me the answer is “around 838.8” (the answer is actually 847).
In both cases, this is because of the way the AI learns through pattern recognition (模式识别). It is just copying something based on what it has “read” before. So it is better at some tasks than others—it can write a sincere-sounding message, but its ability to rhyme leaves a lot to be explored.
I think it’s easy to imagine in the not too distant future every time we write something, we may have a smart AI assistant helping us get started. In fact, Microsoft is already planning to build the technology into its Office apps, according to the CNN news report. And I’m pretty sure that ChatGPT—or something like it—is going to change the world.

Travel Plan
This summer holiday, I decide to travel with my parents. We have a discussion about that. Now I’d like to share the travel plan.
Beijing is my first choice. It’s the capital of China with deep and rich culture. A great number of tourist attractions lie there, drawing millions of visitors’ attention from around the world. The Summer Palace used to be the place where the emperors spent their summers. How amazing! Much treasure is hidden in the Palace Museum. I’m so curious about anything about Beijing that we must put it the first place to go to.
We need to carry a map, a camera and some medicine. The map can guide us when getting lost. We will take pictures of some wonderful moments. When we get sick, medicine is a great help to us. Of course, we need to book tickets and hotels before we leave. I’ll consider that rather than getting my parents to do it.
I hope that my parents will have a great time and we can have good communication through this. After this trip, we can understand each other better.
