Always tacos, the Mexican fried pancakes made me feel bored.
“Mama, can I please have some lunch money, or a sandwich 16 ?” I sat at the kitchen table and said. But the reply was also 17 the same: “Why? You already have these delicious bean tacos.”
I didn’t know how to explain it. It wasn’t that the tacos weren’t good; it was that all the other kids either 18 their lunch at the cafeteria or took sandwiches during the lunch time.
Lunch time again! I went to the very 19 of the cafeteria, turned my back and opened the taco bag.
“Hey, you!” Someone shouted. I turned and found a girl standing in front of me. She looked into my 20 . “Taco head! Taco head!” She yelled. In seconds I was 21 by kids chanting “Taco head! Taco head!”
Tears filled my eyes. “What’s going on here?” The 22 was over until a serious voice came up. Coach Clarke, our PE teacher, came over and all the kids hurried back to seats.
“Don’t pay attention to them, for they’re just being mean and silly.” Coach said. “How about we 23 ?” She smiled and handed me her sandwich. “I’ll exchange this for your taco.”
I couldn’t believe my ears, but her smile 24 me to pull up my lunch from the bag.
“Those look good.” Coach took a bite and said. “More delicious than any 25 I’ve ever had. Try it for yourself.” She kept making all the 26 mmmmm sounds. I knew all the kids could hear.
As we ate, she told me how she became a coach because she loved soccer and focused on it without caring about others’ eyes. I told her I liked to play soccer too.
I hesitated, then said, “I wish I’d kick the girl who meant to insult me.”
“Sofia, I understand your feeling but learn to kick with your 27 .”
“Like in soccer? But how?”
“No. By kicking her at school, by 28 her in English, math and everything.” She also told me. “Part of ‘kicking that girl’ is to eat tacos 29 in the middle of the cafeteria.”
Thanks to Coach, that year I kicked that girl in all classes and sports, especially soccer. Moreover, I looked forward to Mama’s tacos and always enjoyed the time eating tacos 30 during the lunchtime. The very things we were once ashamed of are likely to be those we take pride in afterwards.

When my kids were younger, when we had long car rides, and whenever we stopped in between, there would be the joy of all of us singing Writing’s On the Wall, at the top of our voices along with Stevie Wonder. For a while, Joe Cocker’s Space Captain was their favorite road trip song and I remember them shouting with joy whenever it was played.
These days, when we get out of the city, everyone settles into their electronic world. I’ll read; the kids, who are now in their teens, have their headphones on; and my husband who is usually driving, listens to his own playlist through the loudspeaker in the car. Technology is changing how we all listen to music.
When it comes to technology, kids are like apex predators (顶级捕食者) while their parents are like impala (黑斑羚) in the grass, never knowing what’s coming up behind them.
My kids’ confidence in technology means that they teach me a lot about using the Internet and apps. And yet, a key role of parents is to let their children know new ideas and to expand (扩展) their tastes. I can start with their music.
Being part of a family requires a shared memory bank, which is full of the food we ate together, the things we did together and the music we enjoyed together. More importantly, I want my kids to understand why I love the music I love, and why the movies I watch matters to me—because sharing the why is important.
A few days ago, I was arguing with my 14-year-old daughter about having her headphones on. As usual, she wasn’t listening to me. But as we got in the car she smiled sweetly, and connected her phone to the car so her music could play out loud. She had made a playlist, and, to my surprise, she had prepared a few songs on there that I liked.
34. What did the author’s kids enjoy doing during car rides when they were younger?
A. Talking with their parents. B. Singing together to the music.
C. Being lost in their electronic world. D. Listening to their mum telling stories.
35. What does the author want to say in paragraph 3?
A. She has less confidence in bringing up her kids.
B. She has less knowledge of technology than her kids.
C. She has a strong wish to protect her kids in the technology world.
D. She has a great interest in understanding what her kids love.
36. What does the author try hard to do?
A. Invite her kids to take family road trips.
B. Turn to her kids for help with the Internet.
C. Get her kids to put down their headphones.
D. Teach her kids how to choose the right music.
37. What can we infer about the author’s daughter from the last paragraph?
A. She has become more and more cheerful.
B. She still refuses to accept her mum’s advice.
C. She has not got used to playing music out loud.
D. She is trying to have shared memories with her mum.

Have you ever sent a text or shared something online that you immediately regretted? Most of us have. Now a growing number of apps and services are offering users the attractive ability to edit (编辑) those messages.
In September, Twitter and Apple introduced editing features. Twitter started in September by announcing it would test an edit button (按钮). Within two weeks of that move, Apple introduced its new iOS 16 operating system, which lets users edit and unsend iMessages for the first time.
Users can now edit an iMessage up to five times within 15 minutes after sending it and unsend any message up to two minutes after it;s sent. To do this, users need only tap and hold their sent message, then choose “edit” or “undo send.” On Twitter, the edit button will give people a “generous” time, says Christina Wodtke, a professor in computer science at Stanford University. Users will be able to edit a tweet up to five times in the 30 minutes after it’s posted. Once a change is made, a tweet will be marked with a time stamp, and a label (标签) that says “Last Edited.”
“What they’re doing is creating an edit button that allows the Twitter users to be their personal editors,” Wodtke says. He also warns that editing could be used for harmful purposes. For example, someone could make the information false or harmful with this feature.
To make sure edit tools are used for good purposes, experts say, tech companies must take certain safety measures, especially when the information is part of the public record.
Twitter says the feature was designed to be transparent (透明的) and protect the integrity (完整性) of the message. “We’re purposely starting this test with a smaller group to learn and deal with possible problems before bringing it to more people,” a Twitter spokesperson says.
38. How is Apple’s edit button different from Twitter’s?
A. It offers its users less time to regret.
B. It offers its users fewer chances to edit.
C. It allows its users to tap more words into a message.
D. It allows its users to label the message they have edited.
39. What does Wodtke think of Twitter’s edit button?
A. It can make its users more organized.
B. It can be used to spread wrong messages.
C. It can help messages reach more people.
D. It can cause people to take messages easily.
40. What can we learn about Twitter’s editing feature from the last paragraph?
A. It is still being tested. B. It will add more functions (功能).
C. It should be more transparent. D. It has led to unexpected problems.
41. What is the best title for the text?
A. A growing need for an edit button.
B. Advantages and risks of a new edit button.
C. The past and present of the edit button.
D. The comparison between Twitter and Apple.

“They tell me that you’d like to make a statue of me—is that correct, Miss Vinnie Ream?”
The deep, gentle voice helped calm the nervous girl. Asking a favor of the President of the United States was no casual matter, especially for a seventeen-year-old girl.
“Yes, sir,” she replied, her dark eyes meeting his. “I wouldn’t have dared to ask you, but my teacher, Mr. Mills, says I am ready. I plan to make it in an admirable manner.”
President Lincoln smiled. “Painters, sculptors—they’ve all tried to make the best of this ordinary face, but I’m afraid there’s not much hope. What did you have in mind, Miss Ream? A bust (半身像)?”
Before Vinnie could say yes, the President hurried on, a shade of apology (道歉) in his voice. “Of course—I shouldn’t have asked. A full-length pose would be much too big a project for a young woman your size.”
Vinnie’s face turned red. She realized she looked like a child, with her tiny figure. “Small does not mean weak, sir,” she defended herself. “I was born in the country of Wisconsin. I’ve driven teams of horses and carried water. Making a full-length clay (粘土) figure would not use up my strength completely—and that is what I plan to do!”
The President’s eyes, brightened at her show of spirit. “Sorry, madam, I have not realized how strong you are as I didn’t know your background.”
But his smile disappeared gradually as he rubbed his beard with bony fingers, in thought. “Miss Ream,” he sighed, “I’d like to let you do it, but as you know, we are in the middle of a war. How could I possibly take the time to pose for a sculpture now? I hardly have a minute to myself.”
Vinnie glanced around and noted the size of his office. “I work quickly,” she said. Her voice was soft but confident as she pointed to the comer near the windows. “If I were to bring my day here and work for three hours every afternoon, I could complete most of the project while you are at your desk.”
The President seemed to consider her idea seriously. He got up and shook Vinnie’s hand warmly, “I’ve heard that you are a talented young woman, and I have found you charming and intelligent as well. I cannot make my decision immediately, but you will hear from me soon.”
The very next day, Vinnie received an invitation from the President.
42. The meaning of the underlined word “casual” in paragraph 2 is most close to “____________”.
A. easy B. strange C. serious D. meaningful
43. Vinnie confirmed her ability to make a full-length statue by stressing ____________ .
A. her experience from other projects
B. her happy childhood in the country
C. the heavy work she had done before

44. Vinnie wanted to choose the comer near the windows to ____________ .
A. achieve effects of natural lighting
B. keep all her tools within easy reach
C. watch the President in a right position carefully
D. avoid making the President’s work in trouble
45. What message does the story express?
A. Devotion requires great interest.
B. Experience helps to be excellent.
C. A strong-willed heart can reach his goal.

六、阅读与回答问题(本题共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
Water Bottles: Handy or Harmful?
In recent years, more and more people have come to realize the bad influence plastic water bottles have on the environment. However, their use is still on the increase.
Americans buy nearly 100 billion bottles of water every year. Stack (堆叠) those up, and you could build a tower that reaches all the way from the Earth to the Moon—60 times! Why do we love bottled water so much? It’s easy—you just take it and go, and throw away the bottle when you’re done. And it is healthy, compared with sugary sodas and sports drinks. But there’s more to the story.
The truth is, bottled water often isn’t any better than the water many people can get from a tap. In fact, more than half of all bottled water is tap water. This includes popular brands like Aquafina and Dasani, which sell tap water that has been run through a filter (过滤器).
And chances are that the water from your tap has been tested more carefully than bottled water. Most cities check tap water for dangerous germs (细菌) and chemicals. The rules for bottled water are less strict.
Perhaps the biggest problem with water bottles lies in the containers themselves. They create huge amounts of litter. Remember those 100 billion bottles we use every year? Less than one-third of them get recycled. The rest go into landfills (垃圾填埋场), where they can take hundreds of years to break down. Or they are left behind as litter on our streets and in our parks. Some end up in oceans, where sea animals can eat parts of them and get sick or die.
But not everyone can just avoid bottled water. Around the world, more than 2 billion people only have access to water that contains harmful germs or chemicals. If they were to drink this water, they could get very sick. They could even die. They don’t drink bottled water because it’s easy. They drink it because they need it.
Some bottled water has fluoride (氟化物), which protects your teeth. If your tap water doesn’t have fluoride, bottled water could be a healthy choice for you. Also, if there were no bottled water, you might drink a soda or a sports drink. Sugary drinks like these are a big part of why so many Americans are overweight.
请将答案写在答题卡上

A Gift of Growing Up
We’ve got a lot of help from the things and the people around us, which encourages us a lot on the way of growing up. From parents. We learn how to be a kind person. From teachers, we learn how to struggle with difficulties.
When I was in Grade 7, I was crazy about playing football. I didn’t have much time for my schoolwork. It was hard for me to achieve a balance between schoolwork and hobbies. Exams always brought me endless sadness. As a result, I was afraid of going to school and I became very lonely. Luckily, my teachers noticed that and offered me help, they gave me some useful advice. They told me not to give up because nothing is impossible to a willing heart. I was moved and planned every day carefully. Now, I have made great progress.
Now I understand when we face problems, we should never give up easily. And asking others for advice sometimes can make a difference to us when we grow up.
