Have you ever used a needle(针) and thread(线) to sew(缝纫)? What did you think of it?
When I was a little boy, my mom, grandmother and I drove to my grandmother's sister's house in the next town. It was a warm summer afternoon, I went outside to play in the yard while they all sat around the kitchen table to talk.
After an hour of playing by myself, I got bored and walked inside to see what they were doing.
On the kitchen table was a large homemade quilt that was still being sewn together. Pieces of colorful cloth were everywhere. I sat in a chair and watched as my great aunt sewed a little piece of cloth onto the quilt. I looked over at one edge of the quilt and saw a piece of thread sticking out. Without thinking, I reached over to pull it.
“No!” It was my grandmother's voice. I jumped back. That was the first time I can ever remember her yelling at me. Seeing the frightened look on my face, she smiled and showed me why she had yelled. That single piece of thread wove(穿行) in and out of the different pieces of cloth.
Like a twisting road, it made its way from one end of the quilt to the other. If I pulled on it, I would have pulled the quilt apart and ruined(毁掉) hours of work.
As I look back on that moment today, I can see that each of our lives is a lot like that thread in the quilt. We are each a single piece of thread, but the other threads around us help hold everything together. So every single thread must help and support the others around the part. So do people.
23. What was the writer doing while others were talking in the kitchen?
A. Sewing the quilt. B. Sitting in a chair.
C. Pulling the thread. D. Playing in the yard.
24. What's the meaning of the underlined word “yelling”?
A. Saying happily. B. Shouting loudly.
C. Crying excitedly. D. Speaking quickly.
25. What would happen if the writer had pulled the thread?
A. The quilt would be pulled apart.
B. His mother would be happy to see that.
C. His grandmother might praise him for doing that.
D. The thread would weave in and out of different pieces of cloth.
26. What does the writer want to tell us?
A. Loving the people around us.
B. Helping the people around us.
C. Finding out what your purpose is.
D. Learning to work without other people.
D
Most people recognize the cactus(仙人掌) plant by its sharp points. But there are other things that make the cactus plant different from other plants.
Scientists think that long ago the cactus looked much like any other plant. But, over the years they moved into hot, dry deserts. When cactuses started to grow in dry areas, they slowly began to change. Like all desert plants, cactuses had to live for long periods of time without water. Soon, their stems(茎) started to grow thicker to store water. After a good rain, cactuses are made of 90% water!
As time went by, there were other changes to the cactus plant. These changes helped the plant to live even better in dry places. The stems became thicker and thicker. Soon, chlorophyll(叶绿素) appeared in the stem.
Chlorophyll is very important to plants. People can usually find chlorophyll in a plant's leaves. Chlorophyll gives leaves their green color. But chlorophyll has another important purpose. It creates the plant's food. The plant's energy to stay alive comes from chlorophyll.
After chlorophyll moved to the cactus stem, the cactus had to face a problem that the big leaves evaporated(蒸发) too much water in hot and dry areas. That made it in danger of death! Then the cactus tried to grow smaller leaves. The leaves have been changing till they become needles(刺). Now, without big leaves, chlorophyll in the stem draws sunlight and makes nourishment directly.
Some desert plants send down long roots to get water from deep inside the ground. But cactuses have a different root system. Their roots do not go deep down into the ground. Instead, they grow in all directions. The roots get water from a very large area. Even a small cactus plant may send its roots a distance of 9 to 12 meters from the area where it grows. There are scientists who study the roots of the desert cactuses. They say something surprising: if we looked at the ground under a desert where cactuses grow, it would look like a thick forest of roots!
27. What was the first change when the cactus moved into deserts?
A. The stem made food.
B. The stem grew thicker.
C. The leaves disappeared.
D. Chlorophyll appeared in the stem.
28. Why did cactus leaves become smaller?
A. To reduce water evaporation.
B. To make the cactus stem grow thinner.
C. To protect themselves from animals.
D. To help chlorophyll appear in the stem.
29. Which of the following shows the roots of a cactus?
A. B.
C. D.
30. Which of the following is TRUE about the cactus?
A. Chlorophyll in the stem creates the plant's food.
B. Long ago the cactus looked different from any other plant.
C. The cactus today still has a few big leaves.
D. The roots of the desert cactuses help change a desert into a thick forest

Years ago, I lived in a building in a large city. The building next door was only a few feet away from mine. There was a woman who lived there, whom I had never met, yet I could see her seated by her window each afternoon, sewing or reading.
After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself. “I wonder why that woman doesn't wash her window. It really looks terrible.”
One bright morning I decided to clean my flat, including washing the window on the inside.
Late in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! The woman sitting by her window was clearly seen. Her window was clean!
Then I began to understand it. I had been criticizing (批评) her dirty window, but all the time I was watching hers through my own dirty window.
That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings?
From then on, whenever I want to judge someone, I ask myself first, “Am I looking at him through my own dirty window?” Then I always judge myself before I judge others.
