LESSONS LEARNED OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Mr. Gray was my history teacher in tenth grade. I couldn’t tell what kind of history he taught for two reasons: one, I never liked history, and two, my body was in class, but my mind wasn’t. Mr. Gray wasn’t the teacher who offered retakes (补考) on tests; he did so much more for me than that. He offered me a pair of ears and a shoulder to cry on.
Before Mr. Gray came along, one major event was taking place in my life. My mom told me she wanted to divorce my dad. Why then? I didn’t understand. I barricaded (筑起壁垒) myself in my basement bedroom, listening to angry music and sleeping. I fell into a depression and my grades were falling. Then there was Mr. Gray.
I sat against a brick wall outside the library, knees pulled into my chest, head down, surrounded by my noisy friends that I was slowly distancing myself from, when I heard his voice: “Ever feel like you’re a fire hydrant (消防栓) and every dog in the neighborhood is stopping by to visit you?” I picked my head up and then I saw Mr. Gray.
I had heard him use this line in the classroom a few times before, when it looked like a kid was having a bad day. It usually aroused a laugh and ended there. This time was different though — he was waiting for an answer. Next thing I knew I was following him into the library.
We sat amongst the shelves of the mostly empty library for the rest of lunchtime. I don’t remember much about that first conversation other than the unconditional promise he made me of lending a pair of ears and a shoulder to cry on. What made him such a special teacher was that he saw that I was struggling and reached out to me outside of the classroom.

An A for Mrs. B
I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project. In groups, we were to create a newspaper around the culture we were studying.
On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. B.informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. Only a few people behaved normally in the class, and Missy was one of them. I knew we had chosen each other.
The next day, I anxiously waited for the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. B called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy’s name was called. So, I’m in group three,I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!
Then I heard it. The last group: “Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina.” I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group—the boy who rarely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who wore weird clothes. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends.
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. B.She looked at me and knew what I was there for. I was determined to convince her I should be in the “good” group. “Why. . . ?” I started.
She gently placed a hand on my shoulder. “I know what you want, Karina,” she said, “but your group needs you. I need you to help them get a passing grade on this assignment. Only you can help them.”
I was stunned. I was confused. I was amazed. She had seen something in me I hadn’t seen.
“Will you help them?” she asked.
I stood straighter. “Yes,” I replied. I couldn’t believe it came out of my mouth, but it did. I had committed.

3.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Erika and the Necklace
Erika and her little sister Beth sneaked into their mommy’s room. “I’m just going to try on some jewelry,” said Erika. She took a necklace and tried to put it on her neck. “Oh, no,” said Beth. “Mommy doesn’t like us playing with her stuff.” “Okay, you be the lookout,” instructed Erika. “Stand by the door and let me know if Mommy comes up the stairs.”
Before Beth got to the door, Bouncer, the family’s Bernedoodle dog, bounded into the room and almost knocked Erika down. The necklace went flying. It had barely hit the floor when Bouncer bit it and raced off.
“Bouncer! Bouncer!” yelled Erika. “Beth, help me get the necklace back.” The girls were hot on Bouncer’s tail. “Stop!” they yelled. Bouncer dashed down the stairs and into the living room. He stopped just long enough for the girls to get close to him. Then of he went. “Stop!” yelled Erika. “Beth, you go the other way. We’ll corner him in the dining room.”
Erika met Beth in the dining room. Sure enough, Bouncer was there waiting for them. He was down low on his front legs with his tail in the air, ready to play. “Grab him!” screamed Erika.
Just as Beth was about to grab him, Bouncer took off. He whizzed (嗖地移动) by Beth and Erika. “Stop, you troublemaker!” yelled Erika as she raced after him. The girls were getting close again, but Bouncer zoomed down the basement stairs. The girls raced after him. “I don’t see him,” said Beth. Erika scratched her head. “He’s got to be down here. He’s hiding.”
Just then Mom called to the girls. “Erika, what’s all the noise? What’s wrong? I heard you from the yard.” “Uh, oh,” whispered Erika. “Uh.. nothing’s wrong,” she shouted.
Beth dashed up the stairs. Erika heard her telling Mom everything. “That blabber mouth (多嘴的人),” said Erika under her breath.

4.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I had two different homes, and two different sets of rules. Sometimes I just felt like there were two of me.
On the night of our school science fair, Mom and Dad both came because I was getting an award. They didn’t sit together, but they each told me how proud they were of me. It was the first time in a long time that I’d seen them in the same room after their divorce(离婚), so I asked hopefully, “Can we walk around and look at all the science projects together?”
“I’m sorry, Andrea,” Mom said hurriedly, “I promised to volunteer in the soup kitchen.” It was my night to be with Dad anyway, so he and I looked at some projects and then went home. Seeing me rubbing my eyes, Dad thought I was tired, but I just didn’t want him to see the pouring tears.
At least at school nothing had changed, and I could be just me. But one day my best friend, Trish, decided to pick Lisa instead of me to be on her volleyball team. I was so mad! So I hid her lunchbox. No one could find it. Later that day the teacher found it out. I was sent to the principal’s office, and the principal called my parents. We had a meeting.
Mom gave me her disappointed look and Dad said to me angrily, “We’ve decided you’ve lost your TV and computer game chances for two weeks.” But even though I was in trouble, I was happy to see Mom and Dad talking to each other. Then Mom added, “Andrea, you should use your words and tell someone how you’re feeling.”

I have recently completed my college degree. The last class I had to take was Sociology. The teacher was absolutely inspiring with the qualities that I wish every human being had been graced with.
Her last project of the term was called “Smile”. The class was asked to go out and smile at three people and document their reactions. I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway, so I thought this would be a piece of cake literally.
Soon after we were assigned the project, my classmates and I went out to a popular restaurant on a freezing March morning. We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away, and then even my classmates did. I did not move an inch. An overwhelming feeling of panic welled up inside of me as I turned to see why they had moved. As I turned around, I smelled a horrible “dirty body” smell, and standing there behind me were two poor homeless men.
As I looked down at the shorter gentleman, close to me, he was smiling. His beautiful sky-blue eyes were full of light as he searched for acceptance. He said “Good day” as he counted the few coins he had been catching.
The second man fumbled with his hands as he stood behind his friend. I realized the second man was mentally deficient. I held my tears as I stood there with them.
The young lady behind the counter asked the shorter gentleman what they wanted. He said, “Coffee is all, Miss.” That was all they could afford to be able to sit in the restaurant and warm up. They had to buy something. They just wanted to be warm. Then I really felt it, a compulsion so great that I almost reached out and embraced the little man with the blue eyes. That was when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me, judging my reaction. I smiled and asked the young lady behind the counter to give me two more breakfast meals.

6.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As Christmas decorations appeared in town, our parents called my two younger brothers and me together. At first, I thought someone had died, because I had never seen my parents look so sad. My brothers and I stood waiting for the awful news.
Mom hugged me as she murmured, “Christmas is going to be different this year. We won’t be having a tree or presents. We can barely afford food.” Dad, resting on the couch, beckoned(招手示意)the boys into his arms. “Things will change when I get back to work.”
My family was poorer than dirt. Dad, the only bread-earner in our family, worked in a coal mine. However, soon after returning to work at the end of a long strike, Dad was hurt in a rock fall that broke bones in his foot. Lying on the couch with the swollen foot high on pillows, he didn’t talk or smile much. There was little to smile about. No work, no income.
At nine years old, I mothered my younger brothers: Rodney, aged six, and Stevie, three. We shared a small bedroom. That night, after our parents’ announcement, we talked.
Rodney began. “Em, did you see how sad Mommy and Daddy looked? I thought Mommy was gonna cry.”
“Me, too. Daddy’s foot’s … this big” whispered Stevie, holding out his arms.
“Yeah ... We’re in hard times,” I said. “It makes Mommy and Daddy sad.”
“But we don’t have to be sad,” I added, hoping to brighten the mood.
“Since there are still several weeks to go, maybe we can do something to cheer them up,” I said with overdone enthusiasm. The boys proposed, “We can take the money from our piggy bank ... earn some more … and surprise them with gifts!”
“I can run errands(跑腿)for Aunt … em … and neighbors to earn money,” I offered.
“Yeah,” Rodney added, “Stevie and I can return bottles and save the deposit money ... instead of buying candy!” He pushed Stevie gently with his elbow.
“Yeah!” Stevie clutched his hands together.
We had a plan!
Until they nodded off, I coached my little brothers (especially Stevie) in ways to guard our secret. “Don’t talk about it during the day.”

7.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When Marco was a boy, he tried everything to get his father’s love and attention. He worked hard to earn exceptional marks; he tried to be obedient, he chose inspiring friends and always tried to behave well. However, it felt to Marco that his father had little time for him. Except for his demands around chores after school, communication was nonexistent. It seemed to Marco the only time his dad ever spoke to him was to be demanding or critical. Marco sank further into his low self-esteem and was overwhelmed with feeling unappreciated, inadequate and depressed.
One day his father, already tired after a long day, tripped over Marco’s bike in the garage. The angry quarrel that followed left Marco feeling grieved. It seemed no matter how hard he tried he could never do anything right. In despair Marco blurted out, “That’s it! It’s enough!”
For two days, Marco felt so miserable. All he could think of was wanting to leave this enormous pain, those overwhelming feelings of rejection and unworthiness.
Two days later, his aunt called him. To Marco, this seemed like a miracle. Aunt Ginette usually only called once a year, on his birthday. She said she had just seen some young teenagers participate in a public speaking contest called Gala Personnalité sponsored by Club Optimiste—and she thought about him. She thought he should give it a try. She told him she firmly believed he could perform on stage like the other kids, since she had seen him perform for the family at Christmas.
Marco was startled, and not a little taken aback. Him? Onstage? In a public speaking contest? To agree would be contrary to his entire shy, timid personality. But Aunt Ginette was so confident. She seemed really serious. She was sure it was something he could do. She truly believed in him.

8.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
“Po po, Popo, cat cat, Popo cat—oh dear, what a hard word!” said George, quite out of patience. “Do you call that a hard word to pronounce, George? I know much harder words than that.” “Well, father, this is the hardest word I ever saw,” replied George. “Sometimes the hardest words are the shortest. I know one little word, with only two letters in it, that very few children, or men either, can always speak.” said his father.
“Only two letters! What can it be?” cried George. “The hardest word,” replied his father, “I have ever met with is a little word of two letters— no.” “That’s the easiest word in the world!” cried George. He repeated, “N-o, no; n-o, no,” a great many times. “George, I hope you’ll always find it as easy to pronounce as you think it is now, and that you’ll be able to speak it when you should.”
In the morning George went bravely to school, a little proud that he could pronounce so hard a word as “Popocatepetl.” Not far from the schoolhouse was a large pond, where the boys used to skate and slide when it was frozen over. That day when the boys went to school, they found the pond as smooth and clear as glass, and they thought that by noon the ice would be strong enough to skate upon. So as soon as school was dismissed(放学)the boys all ran to the pond, —some to try the ice, and others simply to see it.
“Come, George,” said William, “now we shall have a glorious time sliding.” George hesitated(犹豫). He did not believe the ice was strong enough.
“Oh, come on!” said another boy, “I know it is strong enough. I have known it to freeze over in one night. It would bear.” But George still hesitated, for his father had forbidden him to go on the ice without special permission.
“I know why George won’t go,” said William, “he’s afraid he might fall down and hurt himself.”
“He’s a coward(胆小鬼)!” cried another.

9.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was invited to a cookout on an old friend’s farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs (蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired? Or too thirsty?
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away.
Hovering (悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say goodbye.”

“Bye, Mom; bye, Dad; don’t worry. We’ll take care of everything!” Carly waved as her parents drove off. They were headed for a well-deserved vacation from their candy store, and Carly had promised them she’d be able to run it by herself. Her parents didn’t quite agree, however, so they compromised by having Carly’s Aunt Maggie come over and help, who was called “uniquely creative”.
Maggie blew into the store like a swirling whirlwind and asked for an immediate start. Carly showed her where the family made some of their own candy, such as fresh fudge(软糖), cotton candy, and ice cream. They had lots of delicious flavors to choose from. Aunt Maggie looked them over and tasted a
bite of the chocolate fudge. “It’s delicious, right?” Carly asked confidently. “It’s good, but … unoriginal,” replied her aunt. “We can do better.”
Before Carly could question what Maggie meant, the woman had gone to investigate the kitchen. Moments later, she came back with her hands full of items. “Brussels sprouts(豆芽菜)?” Carly gave her aunt a puzzled look. Aunt Maggie couldn’t be serious!
But she was. The woman’s hands were busy chopping and then adding small pieces of the vegetable into the vanilla fudge batter(糊状物). Carly’s eyes grew wide as she watched her aunt mix it together. “Aunt Maggie, I really don’t think that’s a good idea,” said Carly. “No, you’re quite right,” agreed Maggie.
“ But that’s definitely an ice cream flavor. The cold will perfectly balance out the spicy sauce!”
Carly shook her head in dismay. She couldn’t imagine what her parents would think upon their return. Her aunt whistled a happy tune as she continued to mix strange candy combinations: lemonade with pickle(泡菜)juice, barbeque-flavored candy, and lima bean(利马豆)ice cream.

1.Possible version:
However, that didn’t change our classroom relationship. Every time he noticed my mind was wandering, he would call on me, trying to draw my attention back. Unsurprisingly, I still distanced myself from classmates. I still didn’t know most of the answers. But I think he knew that I was at a crossroads. Apparently, my problem needed to be addressed first outside the classroom and then in class.
More lunchtime library conversations followed throughout the school year. They always made me feel freer and I didn’t feel trapped like before. Mr. Gray who was always there unconditionally, presented me with an outlet for my pain and frustration. His presence and life wisdom enabled me to become less defensive and open up more. Gradually, the hours spent amongst the library shelves became my favorite time to take his “class”. Little as I remembered about what he taught in the history class, the lessons learned outside the classroom would never fade away.

2.Possible version 1:
I bravely walked to where the others in my group sat. Encouraged by their big smiles, I sat down and led the project. According to personal interests and what they were good at, I assigned them with different columns of the newspaper. Halfway through it, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three people. Gradually, I learned that Mauro had few friends because he was struggling with the English language; Juliette wore long skirts or dresses every day because of her religion; Rachel had a burning desire to be a fashion designer so she had a whole barrel of unique ideas. Finally, with our cooperation, our assignment was successfully finished.
In the end, Mrs. B gave us an A on that assignment. She announced to the whole class that the newspaper designed by our group was elaborately laid out and carefully edited, with rich cultural knowledge. Our joy and happiness were beyond description. After that semester ended, I always received a friendly hello from my group. Many years later, I didn’t recall anything about the newspaper, but I did feel fortunate to be given the opportunity to see in myself a potential that inspired my actions. It is Mrs B’s insight, vision and thoughtfulness that bring out the potential in four of her students. She is the one who truly deserves the grade A.
Possible version 2:
I bravely walked to where the others in my group sat. Resilient student as I was, I knew that in all my academic years, this seminar got to be the hardest nut to crack. Even so, I felt relieved when I saw them beaming with delight at me. The very natural and heart-warming smiles could hardly be ignored. Following a few greetings, we plunged right into the task at hand. Some were brainstorming a string of brilliant ideas while others were investigating cultures on the Internet in an energy-draining yet worthwhile manner. Teaming up with one another, everyone shared their passion and wisdom individually and collectively.
In the end, Mrs B gave us an A on that assignment. It was thrilling to see our painstaking efforts finally paid off. We hugged tightly, sheer excitement radiating from our lightened cheeks. This cheerful episode lingered long after the project was completed, serving as a sweet reminder of my new friends. Additionally, the whole ordealalso set me reflecting on how conceited I had been to allow unreasonable grievances to dominate me in the first place. Thanks to Mrs. B, I’ve learned to appreciate others’ inner strengths as well as enlightening minds. As such, I believe grade A should ultimately belong to Mrs. B, a real mentor with a keen understanding of what education is meant for.

“ERIKA!” said Mom. “Up here right now.” Hurrying upstairs, Erika could feel her blood rushing to her face. While she was trying hard to find an excuse, Mom’s voice broke in. “Where is he now?” asked Mom, with arms crossed. Not daring to look into Mom’s eyes, Erika just pointed to the basement as a reply. The three remained silent, wondering how to get the necklace back. Suddenly, an idea flashed across Erika’s mind. She went straight to the kitchen counter and took some snacks. “I know what to do. Just come with me,” she smiled.
Mom and Beth followed her into the basement, Erika carrying the snacks. “Bouncer,” called Erika, “I’ve got a treat for you.” Lickety-split, Bouncer was at Erika’s feet, pricking up his ears and wagging his tail. Just at that moment, Erika grabbed his collar and pulled the necklace from his mouth. Handing the necklace to Mom, Erika apologized, “Sorry, Mom. I shouldn’t have touched your stuff. I’m the troublemaker.” Head drooping, Erika tried to overcome the immense guilt, while Bouncer was nudging her to pet him. “So long as you admit your fault,” said Mom, gently patting her girls and the little “troublemaker”.

I do this for all the kindness I received.” At this moment, the restaurant resounded with thunderous applause. Then the young lady came to me, returning my money, but I refused.
Several days later, our teacher learned the story. She called and invited me to make a speech for the freshmen. I told the freshmen we all had been helped by others in the past, and we all want the world to be a place full of love and kindness, so let’s start from small things and start from ourselves. A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. As my car neared it my thoughts drifted back to the moment when I rescued the hummingbird from the spider’s web. I rushed back to the deserted house. It was a great comfort that the original hole in the window was nowhere to be found. Leaving the house, I couldn’t help wondering how it was getting on now. Had it managed to find its way back home, or was it still out there somewhere struggling to survive?
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. A flash of movement caught my attention. I turned around to see the same hummingbird hovering in the air. It seemed that the bird was waiting for me, its beady eyes locked on mine as if trying to convey some deep, unspoken gratitude. I felt a surge of relief and awe at the sight of this sound and grateful creature, and I knew that I would always cherish the memories we shared as I climbed into my car and drove away.

Sensing their hesitation, Maggie added the items were her treat. Confused, but too polite to argue, the boys left the store. “There go our customers. They will tell everyone how weird our candy is, and nobody will shop here!” Carly mumbled to herself, propping her chin up in her hand and picturing her parents’ scolding her for ruining the fame of the shop.
Thoughts brought back by the bell, Carly saw a big crowd, including the three boys. They were back, but this time there was a crowd of kids swarming the store with them, who couldn’t wait to order and take a bite of the new specials. In the hustle and bustle, Carly and her aunt spared no effort to serve all the customers—more lining up at the door every minute. What a scene!

The easiest thing is smiling at all the people around us, no matter how they look, and lending a helping hand whenever necessary. Only in this way can we make the world more harmonious.

9.

10.Carly looked up as the bell over the front door rang, and in came three boys. They ordered strawberry ice screams. “Oh, how dull,” laughed Maggie. “I insist you try something new!” She offered them a Brussels sprout fudge, a barbeque-flavored candy and a hot sauce ice cream.
When they finally sent the last customer out of the door, they sighed with relief. “Innovation works miracles!” Carly exclaimed joyfully, “You’re a genius helper!” Grinning proudly, Aunt Maggie winked and gave her a high five.
