Initially, I totally believed that Daddy wanted a boy. I could just imagine his disappointment when I was born. What always frustrated me was that he never tried hiding his feelings from me. He had hoped a boy who would help him with the farm and finally step into his shoes. But a girl…
I tried to do everything just to please Daddy. Not only did I get up early to help with the housework, but also some tidy work on the farm. What’s more, I went home straight from school, expecting that I was needed. But he didn’t seem to be moved by those at all, let alone putting on a smile.
The year I turned thirteen was the 100th birthday of our town. The town council decided to hold a parade(游行), and they wanted a young lady who could lead the parade. The families in the area were asked to send pictures of their children. Every parent in the area hoped that their daughter would be chosen, every parent except Daddy.
Mommy sent in a picture of me without telling me. I was always so busy being the boy Daddy wanted, and I never considered having the chance to lead the parade. So it was quite a surprise when the town council stopped by one evening to tell us I had been chosen. Mommy was excited. As I anticipated, Daddy showed no interest in the matter.
The day of the big parade finally arrived. I was dressed in a beautiful white dress. At first I felt shy-I’d hardly ever worn dresses. But soon I felt like a princess in a fairy tale.

It was Christmas Eve morning, and I awoke with a mission: to find my lost cat, Baby-Girl. As I got ready, I could hear icy rain pelting the windows. Baby-Girl was out there somewhere in the storm; I could just feel it. Sure, it had been a couple of weeks since she’d gone missing, but I still had faith. This was the season for miracles, after all.
About two weeks aga, my sweet kitty disappeared from my parents’ house in my hometown. Baby-Gil had been saying with them while I was between apartments. At the time, I lived and worked in another city. I was saying with fends until I rented my own house. Baby-Girl had gotten out of my parents’ house the day before I was set to drive back home to pick her up.
My dad and I had spent that entire visit searching for her. Dad was a “realist”, which meant he spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst. “She’s either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone who found her,” he said. I rolled my eyes. He could do with a little more faith!
Besides, though I couldn’t explain it, I knew I’d see Baby-Girl again. She could survive all on her own. If any cat could do the impossible, it was my Baby-Girl. Even after I returned to my house without her, deep down I had this undeniable feeling that we would be reunited one day.
Now, home again for the holidays, I was determined to pick up my search right where I’d left off. I grabbed Baby-Girl’s cat carrier and loaded it into the car, then asked my dad to drive me to the shelter.
At the shelter, a staff member took us to see the cats. We walked through rows of cages. My eyes scanned cats of all colors and sizes. None of them was my Baby-Girl. Then I noticed a room farther back. I pushed ahead. “Sweetheart, that’s where they keep the cats that just came in,” Dad said. “Your cat wouldn’t be in there.”

For the past 17 years, Cathy had been living in the shadows. Because of some birth problems, her bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive long. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
In her hometown, a yearly outdoor performance was held in the school auditorium(礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town’s people.
Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only include the most excellent people in the field.
Cathy had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to her music teacher Mrs. Owens to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a glance at Cathy’s body and said, “Child, you are just not suitable. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too.”
Without singing a single note, Cathy was sent back through the door of the music classroom. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Butler. He heard about Cathy and suggested that she have a try.
Cathy didn’t want to be rejected again, so she hesitated about it. As Cathy struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Butler called, “Cathy, you’re next.” Kind of nervous as she was, Cathy did as Mr. Butler told her to. Mr. Butler sat by the piano to keep Cathy company. When Cathy finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Butler and knew the result would be posted on notice board the next day.
Cathy couldn’t sleep that night. She tossed and turned in bed one thousand times. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn’t fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain due to stress.

I was still hoping Goldie might come back. But it was the day after the race and there was no sign of her. I was sitting in Grandad’s garden, staring into the sky.
“Come on, Goldie, come on, Goldie.”
Sometimes racing pigeons turned up days after a race. They got lost, or hit bad weather. But that never happened to Goldie. She always came home, right on time.
I had known Goldie ever since she was an egg. I had known her since she was a pink baby pigeon. I helped Grandad look after her. I had held her in my hands after a race and felt her little heart beating. She was beautiful. She had got shiny green and blue feathers on her neck.
“Come on, Goldie.” I couldn’t stop saying that. I had been whispering it ever since I woke up. But it wasn’t working. It wasn’t bringing Goldie back.
What was I going to do? I wanted my Grandad to get better. I wanted him to come out of hospital. But when he came out, he’d come straight to his pigeon cage to see Goldie. “Where’s my champion racer?” he’d ask me.
Suddenly I got a sick feeling in my stomach. I remembered what Grandad had said about the falcons (老鹰) in the old quarry (采石场). I hated those falcons. They probably killed Goldie. I could feel myself getting really angry. My fists were bunched up. Now I knew exactly what to do.
It only took five minutes to run to the old quarry. My chest was burning when I got there and I was gasping for breath but I didn’t stop. I slid down through the trees to the quarry floor.
I wanted to get those falcons. I wanted revenge (复仇), for Goldie. I wanted to be able to tell Grandad, “Take it easy, Grandad. You don’t have to worry any more. I’ve taken care of those falcons for you!”
But I couldn’t see any falcons. Where was their nest? I looked around the quarry walls. That must be it. It was on the deepest side of the quarry.
“I’ll get you, falcons!” I shouted to the nest. My hands were bleeding. But I didn’t feel the pain. Finally I was there.

5.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Two days before Christmas, I received a Facebook message from a stranger. “Hi, Peter,” it began, “my name is Al Sodaro and I’m a former patient of your Dad.”
My father was a doctor, and Al wanted to share holiday greetings and a childhood story involving a talk he’d had with Dad. Over the years I’ve received many such messages, or had people ask me if I was related to Dr. Zheutlin, or Dr. Z as he was well known in my New Jersey hometown. A story of grace or kindness would always follow.
When he was diagnosed (诊断) with lung cancer in 1997 and realized he was going to have to close his practice of more than 40 years, Dad asked me to help him draft a letter to his patients. He was heartbroken. “I think I need my patients more than they need me,” he told me.
We had the letters copied and mailed them out the old-fashioned way. He was completely unprepared for the outpouring of love and appreciation that followed. He was just doing his job, he said.
The cards and letters-hundreds of them-came from near and far. Young children sent drawings, many recalling their past with my father, or enclosed a lollipop (棒棒糖). Some came from parents who had been his patients when they were young. Some were several pages long, filled with stories about the doctor who, above all, showed kindness, answering their calls in the middle of the night or meeting them in the office before sunrise.
Sometimes his greatest gift was his ability to simply reduce their anxiety. At other times, he recognized rare but serious symptoms (due to his clinical excellence) where quick thinking avoided disaster. Many of the cards and letters contained stories like Al Sodaro’s. There was one, however, that is still fresh in my mind, which I shared at his standing-room-only memorial service.
When he was quite young, a little boy named Chris Eckershard came to the office, proud of a new pair of sneakers he was wearing.

6.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I adopted him, he had been rescued from death inside a tightly tied black trash bag abandoned right beside a garbage truck on the road. An alert garbage man noticed the bag moving and used a metal rake (耙子) to tear open the bag to look inside. There was my shaking puppy dog. The rake damaged the nerves in his back so he limped a little, but he could run as fast as lightning.
For my dog’s first birthday, I entered him in a fun run sponsored by our local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). I’m not much of a runner, but the run was only 3 kilometers, so I thought it would be fun for both of us.
We practiced for weeks. On our practice runs, he was always eager to go and usually dragged me along behind him. I worked on his leash (拴狗链) manners so that he wouldn’t trip me on the big day. I felt we were ready for anything.
The fun run was downtown among the big buildings, so the noise of barking dogs all around us rose to a deafening pitch at the start of the race. My dog was frightened when the starting tone went off. He had trouble running in the right direction with all the confusion around us. Soon the runners began to thin out, and my dog was running straight and fast. We were passing people and making great time. I was dreaming of a gold-medal finish.
However, when we were six blocks from the finish, my dog suddenly stopped and dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes. I almost dislocated my shoulder from the sudden stop as I was pulled backward by the leash.
He was lying flat on his belly with his head down in the middle of the crossroads. At first I thought something bad had happened to him. He was shaking and sobbing. I did a quick check and couldn’t see anything wrong. I tried to get him up, but he refused. The police officer doing traffic control impatiently signed me to move away so he could release the cars.

7.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I had an independent and clever dog named Stickeen. He enjoyed the delicious food that my family prepared for him every day. He often ran out of my sight when walking with me.
Early one morning, I went to explore a nearby glacier (冰川). Stickeen followed me, and together we went upon the glacier. Later, I discovered that we were trapped between two very deep cracks (裂缝) in the glacier. The only way across it was a very thin ice that connected the cracks. I made a path across the “bridge” and got to the other side. But my dog was afraid to have a try and began to cry. After taking another careful look at the large cracks, he ran away hopelessly to find some other crossings. By the time he got back, he was confused of course.
When I reached the other side, he screamed louder than ever, and after running back and forth without searching for a good way to escape, he would return to the edge (边缘) of the crack, crying as if in the sadness of death. I called again and again in a sure voice to come on and fear nothing, but he would think for a moment, look down again at the “bridge”, and shout his unshakable thought that he could never, never come that way, and then lie back hopelessly, as if screaming, “O-o-oh! What a place! No-o-o, I can never go-o-o down there!” At last, I seriously shouted to him that now I must certainly leave him and I could wait no longer if he could not come.

It was 11:30 a.m., and the fishing so far had been a failure. Still, floating on the water 40 miles off the North Carolina coast was a great way to spend a lazy July day. It was really relaxing with calm seas, clear skies, and a breeze around them. There was not another boat in sight until now. Suddenly, Andrew Sherman, a 50-year-old father from Roanoke, Virginia, saw a spot in the distance. As the spot approached, it started to look like a boat. “Jack,” he yelled to his 21-year-old son, “someone’s headed straight at us!”
Strangely, the boat was about to crash into the side of their boat. Andrew sped their boat up as quickly as he could to avoid being crashed. The Shermans stared incredibly. Four fishing lines out, music playing – an average recreational fishing boat, except there wasn’t a person in sight. The boat owner must have gone below into the cabin, leaving his boat travelling along at 10 mph.
“We must follow it,” Andrew said.
As their boat got close to it, they shouted, “Hey! Hey!” But there was no response. A horrifying new thought flashed into their mind: The boat owner had gone below and suffered a heart attack, or fell into the water.
Andrew moved their boat alongside the other while Jack leaped onto the other boat. He managed to bring the boat to a stop and rushed down into the cabin. He came back up a moment later. “Empty,” he said.
Astonished, father and son said at the same time, “What happened?”
The two men could have left it at that, but they were curious. Locating the boat’s GPS system, they searched its history log (航海日志). The missing owner had marked points along his route indicating good fishing spots. Then the points suddenly stopped a few miles back.

The automobile industry is spending billions on self-driving cars, just so we can sit in the back seat like some high-powered corporate executive. But what if we quite like driving?
On holiday a few years ago, I spent hours being transported on trains, buses and planes. Then, finally, came the section of the holiday during which I hired a set of wheels.
After decades of marriage, it was not often that you received real praise from your partner, but on the highways of Crete compliments came with every successful action. “Oh, well done!” said Jocasta, her voice full of admiration, as I navigated a roundabout without killing us both.
Into the roundabout (环岛) I went, slowing down as we entered, then speeding up as we returned to the straight. Really, it was like driving in a Fl race.
We turned right, then right again, following the GPS navigation system, and found ourselves in a small Cretan town. I spoke strictly to the GPS: “We don’t want to be here; we want the highway.”
It instructed me to turn right once more. With every turn the street narrowed. It was like being in a magical shrinking room.
We retracted (缩回) the side mirrors. We took another turn. The new road was even narrower, the walls so close you felt compelled to hold your breath.
Another car appeared coming towards us from the opposite direction. The driver gestured, telling me I would have to make way. But how? I didn’t have the nerve to back up along the impossibly narrow road.
There was a narrow garage opening to one side, a small side street to the other. If I could squeeze the car forward into the garage, I could then back into the side street, allowing the other car to pass.
Locals arrived, standing on various sides of the vehicle, helpfully indicating that I had a centimetre to spare here a millimetre there. There were brick walls on both sides of the car. There was zero chance that I wouldn’t damage the vehicle.

Eleven-year-old Kristina shouted on the phone. Vera, her mother, packing lunches for her two children, heard the shouting and dashed to Kristina. Kristina gave her the phone. Kristina was talking to her father at his doctor’s office in Moscow, Russia.
“Vlad, why is Kristina shouting?” began Vera in Russian.
“Vera, this afternoon I must attend a conference at her school. But I cannot be there. I have an important meeting. Why don’t you attend it?” Vlad replied.
"How can I go?”
“You are not going to a forest. You’ll be fine!”
“I know, but I can’t speak English properly. It’s a rule at her school.”
“You can manage. GO!”
Vera turned to Kristina, “Kristina, your father is busy. I will come instead of him.”
Kristina shouted, “Mother, you can’t speak English. How can you come to the conference? NO!” She plowed through her mother and ran sobbing. But Vera convinced Kristina. As there was no option, she agreed and left for school.
Vera was depressed. She felt that if only she knew English, she could avoid such situations. But “how is it possible for me to learn English while balancing so many tasks?” Suddenly, she realized that Andrei was getting late, so she got him ready and walked him to school.
In the afternoon, Vera attended the conference at the school. All the teachers and staff gave a warm welcome to Vera. Kristina kept quieting her mother. All she said were phrases like, “You are embarrassing!” “Stop talking!” and “You do not know English!” Ignoring her daughter’s comments, Vera managed to keep her cool and finished the meeting.
After delivering a cake to a customer, Vera went home to start dinner. At home, she asked her mother-in-law where Kristina was. She said that Kristina had gone to study with her friends. While they were talking, Kristina walked in.
Vera asked, “Why did you go out? You can study at home, you know!”
“I have doubts about English Literature. Can YOU clarify them?” Kristina said in an arrogant (傲慢的) tone.

参考答案:
1.One possible version:
Paragraph 1
As the parade passed down the main street of our town, I saw Mommy and Daddy on the side. Compared to Mum who rejoiced with wild excitement the moment she saw me, Daddy just remained cold, poker-faced. The ignited happiness inside me suddenly vanished into thin air. “Hey, you look so gorgeous!” I was grabbed back to the parade by those compliments shouted out from the crowd. I straightened up my body, and resumed my duty of leading the parade. Looking at those smiling faces on the side, I surprisingly noticed that my mood was improving, especially when I suddenly caught sight of a familiar figure, my father, moving to the end of the parade together with my proceeding. Maybe I was expecting something. But what was it?
Paragraph 2
As I went back from the parade, Daddy stood in front of the gate, smiling. As if being kissed by God, I leapt three feet high, or even pinched myself. I murmured,“Was Daddy smiling to me? Was that a dream?” What confirmed my idea was Daddy’s warm hand. He stroked my head, praising that I did quite a good job, and I was the best girl he had ever known. Never in my wildest dream had I imagined that those words came out from his mouth. I finally proved myself! I was finally accepted as a girl! When I was basking in the afterglow of my father’s recognition, it suddenly dawned on me that we all have our own glittering merits, and being a true and confident self is always a way out.

2.I insisted it didn’t hurt to look and stepped into the room. Suddenly, there came a familiar meow. I followed the sound and my eyes fell on a little cat with big green eyes. She was skinnier than I remembered, but it was Baby-Girl! My eye swelled up with tears. I opened the cage door. Baby-Girl practically jumped into my arms. I held her close as Dad looked on. “There’s just no way…,” he mumbled. The shelter staff were skeptical too, saying the cat had just been brought in during the morning storm.
Sensing their doubts, I was ready to prove she was my cat. I grabbed the carrier. I’d trained Baby-Girl to walk inside the carrier. Sure enough, when she was letdown, she made a dash for the carrier and rushed right inside. I was overjoyed to have her back. It was a miracle that she had managed to survive on her own for so long, and I was filled with admiration for her strength and determination. I thanked my lucky stars that I had never given up hope, and that I had come back to the shelter one last time.

Cathy rushed to school and glanced at the list on the notice board anxiously. The fear of being rejected came to strike again. “Jeff Green, Rose Black...” she murmured as her eyes moved upward. “Wow!” Cathy abruptly covered her wide-opened mouth, feeling as if her heart would jump out. There, at the top of the list was posted her name. The leading singer! However, whispers around her pulled her back to earth. Just then, she felt a pat on the shoulder. It was Mr. Butler. “We selected you for our faith in your abilities and voice.” Inspired, Cathy worked even harder for the final performance.
Finally, the day for the performance came. Cathy’s eyes danced with excitement as she stepped on to the stage. Standing still, she heard noises among the crowd. Obviously not cheers! Cathy felt nervous again and even her legs began trembling. At that moment, her eyes parked on Mr. Butler at the corner. He nodded and exchanged a determined glance with her, which timely put her heart back in place. With the music rising, Cathy began her singing. Her sweet voice poured and the audience fell into an abrupt silence. When she finished, the auditorium erupted into a sea of cheers. Cathy White in tears, with so many birth problems in her body, became the shiniest star!

4.“Got you!” I reached out my hand to sweep the nest away but I saw the baby bird, so lovely and so gentle. It was pink and helpless, flopping about in the nest. I thought of Goldie in her babyhood. How could I hurt that baby chick! So I started climbing again up back when I felt a soft, feathery bundle in a tiny crack next to me. “It’s Goldie!” I forgot about being scared. I carefully stuffed her inside my shirt and managed to drag myself up to the top. I found her legs almost broken and eyes dull. Luckily, in the following weeks she grew stronger and stronger.
Then, this morning, Mum said to both me and Goldie, “Grandad’s coming home.” Well, I was really pleased but worried too. With Goldie in my hands, I could feel her heart going pit-a-pit-a-pat. Soon, I heard Grandad coming down the garden. “My Champion racer!” cried grandad. “Let her fly,” said Grandad, stroking Goldie’s feathers. My stomach’s doing back flips. I reluctantly tossed her up into the sky. She’s flying. She flew as an arrow to join the other birds, sunshine glittering on her wings. “She’s more beautiful,” Grandad laughed. So did I.

Dad asked Chris if he could have one, just one, of Chris’s sneakers. I imagine at first Chris was confused, but then understood Dad was gently joking with him. By the time Dad was dying, Chris was about 12 and the sneaker joke had been ongoing for years. Every time he came to the office, Dad would ask him for one of his shoes. A week before Dad died, a small box arrived in the mail and inside was a single well-worn sneaker. It remains a cherished possession in our family.
The box came from a woman, who was Chris’s mother. Hearing the news of Dad’s death, she drove all the way to the funeral home to tell us something. She was a single, working mom raising Chris on a tight budget, and had no health insurance. She wanted us to know that for years, Dad refused to take a penny from her. Dad never told us such stories as these. He did these things not because he wanted others to think better of him, but because he believed what mattered most in the world was kindness.

6.But I couldn’t get my seventy-five-pound dog to get up. The harder I tried to scoop him up from the pavement, the more he fought me. The officer yelling and cars honking, I pulled him with all my might, but in vain. Finally, I got my arm under him and lifted him up in a fireman’s carry, throwing him over my shoulder. As I staggered to the roadside, people around were taking my dog’s side, laughing I was running him too hard. I was fuming. My dog would run all day long and he wasn’t the least bit tired.
Another half-block of carrying him brought the answer — a moving garbage truck. Its sound must have hit my dog’s sensitive ears, so he cried louder and clawed at my back as we drew closer to it. I held on tighter and ran as fast as I could to get my sweet baby dog away from that scary garbage truck. I ran with him on my shoulder until I felt him relaxed, and then I set him down. He wagged his tail in gratitude for saving him from the garbage truck. Surely, we didn’t win any medals, but I won his trust forever.

He ran around me screaming and shouting as if saying, “Saved! Saved! Saved!”
When we went back home, Stickeen was a changed dog. Instead of running out of my sight, he always lay by my side, and would hardly accept a piece of food, no matter how tempting the food was from any hand but mine. At night, he would come to me and rest his head on my knee with a look of devotion as if I were his God. Immediately, they headed for that last point. From there, the two boats made ever-enlarging circles for the next hour. With Jack almost giving up hope, Andrew persevered in continuing the search, a journey no easier than looking for a needle in a haystack. He couldn't ignore the fact that the lost captain would probably be alive and was growing weary minute by minute in the endless sea. He kept going on, running north a bit, then south. And then he ran back up north again and then south again. Another hour later, his persistence paid off. Andrew eventually spotted a struggling figure in the distant water.
To their relief, the boat owner came to life. When Andrew finally reached the man he and his son had been seeking for about two hours, a relieved smile rippling round his lips," You have no idea how happy I am to see you, " he said. hauling him aboard. Only then did it dawn on the captain: "This is my boat!" The two men embraced each other as if they had known each other for ages and burst into hearty laughter together. Other than leg cramps, the captain was fine. He'd been saved from drowning and was grateful that the Shermans had taken the time to search for him. Other boaters had heard the call from the Coast Guard on their radios, he says, but only the Shermans stayed on the scene.

Through countless adjustments, finally the car lay straight in the garage! Then with the instructions of all the locals, turning my head left and right looking back hundreds of times, I backed it into the side street.
The other car passed. The driver gave me a grateful wave. In relief, I waved back to her, finding my hands trembling. Tired out and all sweaty, I lay back on the seat, breathed in and out to steady my nerves for a while, then reluctantly sat straight. Jocasta swiveled towards me. “You’ re my hero,” she squeezed my hand as she said. We set off again. I accelerated towards the highway. Who would swap all this for a self-drive car?

But he laughed and said, “Well, if you knew English, Kristina would not have to suffer like this.” Then he added, “This food is delicious. If my husband doesn’t respect me, then how can my children respect me? I must learn English. No matter how hard it may be, I must master English,” she thought.
The next day, she saw an advertisement from LCC, The London Language Center, on the TV. They offered English classes to newcomers. Vera called their number and signed up for a four-week course. Every day, she managed to attend the class. She grasped every chance to communicate in English. In the last week, she passed the test and announced the good news to the family in English.

9.One possible version:
A local stood at the back of the vehicle, waving me on. He was making vigorous ‘this way, this way’ movements with his arms. In an act of blind trust, I followed his instructions, creeping backwards and forwards. The car wriggled deep into the garage one centimeter at a time.
