Alan and the other campers sat around the fire chewing meat chops. It would be Alan’s first night in a tent, and he was excited but a little nervous.
As they ate, the conservation officer spoke. “Much of the wildlife in this area comes out only at night. So after supper, let’s start a night watch. Volunteers will take turns to stay down here by the fire, away from the tents. Those who take part will get a chance to see a world that many of you never knew existed.”
Alan’s stomach tightened. Then he heard the officer continue, “There are no dangerous animals this close to Cape Town. Any volunteers?”
A tough-looking kid with red hair muttered something about needing a good night’s sleep. Another boy spoke up. “I’ll take a shift.” The kid who’d sat next to Alan on the bus volunteered. Alan sat tight. Then one of the girls raised her hand with a giggle. Alan frowned. If a girl could do it, he could, too. He volunteered.
A few more kids raised their hands, and then the officer explained, “This is how it works. When the rest of you go to bed in a tent, the first watcher takes his or her place by the fire. The duty of watcher is to keep the fire going gently. After thirty minutes, he or she wakes the next person.”
Alan heard his voice asking, “Are you sure it’s absolutely safe?”
The officer looked at him. “The danger is minimal. We wouldn’t have taken you here otherwise. Do you still want to volunteer?” Alan nodded but felt uneasy.
Earlier that day, the officer had challenged the campers to spot animal tracks along the river. That was fun. But being alone in the dark was not. Alan’s flashlight was already fading to a dim glow because he had used it too often. Looking around, Alan thought he saw a large bird swooping (俯冲) and wondered if it was an owl. He had seen small paw prints in the sand by the river. Was the owl hunting for the creature that had made them?

Over the summer I moved from Texas to Missouri. This was my second year of high school, but my first year of school in Missouri. I was really nervous about starting a new school and having people like me. I decided that I would be much happier in a new school if I made friends that were so-called “popular”. Getting in with the right group of people would make my life a whole lot better. I bought a new outfit so the first day would be perfect.
On the first day of school, scared, yet eager to begin my new life, I walked up the stairs. My first class was geometry, but where was that? I was standing in the hall looking confused, when a short, blond girl wearing glasses came up and asked, “Are you new? You look lost. Do you want me to help you find your class? My name is Diane. What’s yours?” Even though she seemed a bit strange, definitely not the kind of person I wanted to be associated with, I decided to answer her anyway. I was, after all, lost.
After exchanging names, I followed her up the stairs and down a hallway on the right. When we reached my room she said, “Well, here you are. It was nice meeting you. I hope I see you again and your day goes all right.”
I said a quick thank-you and waved good-bye. Once inside the classroom, I saw one big group of people huddled around someone who seemed to be telling some sort of story. I walked over and got close enough to overhear. All eyes were glued to the guy in the middle of the circle. I decided that this guy was popular.
A few minutes later the teacher told everyone to go find a seat and get ready for the class. I managed to get one right next to the guy. I said, “Hi, my name is April and I’m new here.” He said coldly, “Hi, I’m Johnny.” That class dragged on and on. Finally, the bell rang. I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class is, could you help me find it?” He looked at me and then said a quick no, turned back to his friends, and walked out of the classroom.

When Canadian couple Edith Lemay and Sebastien Pelletier first noticed that their daughter Mia was having vision problems, she was just three years old.
A few years after they first took her to see a specialist, Mia, the eldest of their four children, was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa(视网膜色素变性), a rare genetic condition that causes a loss or decline in vision over time.
By this point, Lemay and Pelletier, who’ve been married for 12 years, had noticed that two of their sons, Colin, now seven, and Laurent, now five, were experiencing the same symptoms. Their fears were confirmed when in 2019 the boys were diagnosed with the same genetic disorder. Their other son Leo, now nine, was given the all clear. There’s nothing they can really do, because there is currently no cure or effective treatment to slow down the progression of retinitis pigmentosa.
Once they came to terms with the news, the couple focused their attention on helping their children build the skills they’d need to lead their way through life. When Mia’s specialist suggested that they absorb her with “visual memories”, Lemay realized that there was one truly incredible way that they could do just that for her and the rest of the children.
“I thought, ‘I’m not going to show her an elephant in a book. I’m going to take her to see a real elephant’,” she explains.“And I’m going to fill her visual memory with the best, most beautiful images I can.”
She and her husband soon began making plans to spend a year traveling around the globe with their kids. They think there are great things to do at home, but there’s nothing better than traveling. Not only the scenery, but also the different cultures and people.
After gathering up enough savings, they soon began their family journey with an in-depth itinerary (行程) that involved traveling through Russia by land, and spending time in China.

Once across the river and into the business district, Carrie glanced about her for some likely door which to apply.
As she contemplated(打量) the wide window and imposing signs, she became conscious of being gazed upon and understood for what she was——a wage-seeker. To avoid a certain indefinable shame she felt at being caught spying about for some place where he might apply for a position, she quickened her steps and assumed an air of indifference supposedly common to one upon an errand.
A little way on Carrie saw a great door which, for some reason, attracted her attention. It was ornamented by small brass sign, and seemed to be the entrance to a vast hive of six or seven floors. “Perhaps, ” she thought, “they may want someone” and crossed over to enter, summoning up her courage as she went.
When she came within a score of feet of the desired goal, Carrie observed a young gentleman in a gray clerk suit, fumbling his watch- chain and looking out. That he had anything to do with the concern she could not tell, but because he happened to be looking in her direction, her weakening heart penetrated her and she hurried by, too overcome with shame to enter in. After several blocks of walking, in which the uproar of the streets and the novelty of the situation had time to wear away the effect of her first defeat, she again looked about. Over the way stood a great six- story structure labeled “Storm and King”, which she viewed with rising hope. It was a wholesale dry goods concern and employed women.
Carrie could see them moving about now and then upon the upper floors. This place she decided to enter, no matter what. She crossed over and walked directly toward the entrance. As she did so two men came out and paused in the door. A telegraph messenger in blue dashed past her and up the few steps which graced the entrance and disappeared. Several pedestrians(行人)out of the hurrying throng which filled the sidewalks passed about her as she paused, hesitating. She looked helplessly around and then, seeing herself observed, retreated. It was too difficult a task. She could not go past them.
So severe a defeat told sadly upon her nerves. Her feet carried her mechanically forward, every foot of her progress being a satisfactory portion of a fight which she gladly made. Block after block passed by. The morning sun shining down with steadily increasing warmth made the shady side of the streets pleasantly cool. She looked at the blue sky overhead with more realization of its charm than had ever come to her before.

    5.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Messi was a big fan of soccer. When he turned ten, he joined his first soccer team, the Green Lightning. Messi put on his uniform right away, and then he admired himself in the mirror.
“I’m a real soccer player,” he said to himself. He practised his serious game face and his victory smile. “What are you doing?” asked his sister Grace.
    “I’m practising soccer,” said Messi.
“Well,” said Grace, “when people practise soccer, they usually use a ball.”
Messi then found a soccer ball in the basement. He hurried back to his room, stood in front of the mirror, and posed with the ball. Just right!
On Wednesday, Messi met his teammates on the playground. Coach Jupiter taught them how to kick the ball, run after it, and kick it again. He taught them how to throw the ball in from the sidelines, using two hands while keeping both feet on the ground.
Then they had a practice game. Soccer was a lot harder than it looked. Every time Messi was about to kick the ball, someone else kicked it away from him. When Messi threw the ball in from the sideline, he forgot to keep both feet on the ground. The only thing that Messi was good at was cheering. When anyone made a goal, Messi would jump up and cheer for them.
Saturday was Messi’s first real soccer game. The Green Lightening was playing against the Golden Suns. Messi’s family all came to watch. Messi chased the ball up and down. He kicked the air. He kicked the grass. He even kicked one of the Golden Suns. But every time he tried to kick the ball, someone else kicked it first. Even so, he kept cheering for anyone who scored. But no one cheered for him. It came as no surprise that their team lost the match.
After the game, Grace came over and reminded Messi that he needed to be a real soccer player not a cheerleader. Meanwhile, his coach Jupiter told Messi that he wanted him to be a better soccer player next time.

I grew up and started my school career in Haiti. Teachers in Haiti were well known for certain skills: some for their ability to scare you with just a look, and others for their consistency in beating kids.
Our fear pushed us to learn whatever we’re assigned, whether it was memorizing a passage or solving a math problem, so in a way, the teachers were effective. I was able to remember a lot, and as a kid I never sat back and wondered if the education I was getting was good enough.
But looking back, I see that I never grew mentally in that school. They didn’t teach us to think broadly or be creative. Instead, my classmates and I were taught what we needed to know to survive inside a classroom, but not the things that would help me survive in the real world.
When I came to the United States, I didn’t know what to expect. On my first day of school, I met my new teacher, Mr Jean Pierre, who was Haitian. He greeted me with Creole (克里奥尔语). It meant that we were equals.
On my first day in his class, I couldn’t even read the English title of the textbook he handed me. But I learned so quickly that by my third week, I understood most questions and was even raising my hand.
He also had us learn 10 to 20 vocabulary words each day. For each word we had to memorize how to spell it and pronounce it and create a sentence with it. At first, I hated this method because I wasn’t used to having to be creative in any way. But gradually, he helped me fall in love with creative writing. Every morning, we’d have 30 minutes to write about anything that came to mind. I discovered I was good at this, and he was the first teacher ever to put in time aside from his regular schedule for me, staying during lunch or after school to help me and another student who loved writing.

Cathy, my mom, whose pet phrase (口头禅) was “Never give up”, was our family’s beacon of positivity. It was not a title she earmed without concerted (一致的) effort, however. When she was only thirty years old, her husband was killed in a car accident and she was left to raise me alone.
My mom could have lived under a black cloud. Instead, she challenged herself to find joy every day. Leading by example, Mom taught me just how much one could accomplish with a positive attitude. She has taken the same approach in her relationship with her grandchildren-Max and Charley.
One hot summer afternoon, my mom and her two grandsons, having spent two hours building sand castles and collecting sea shells on the beach, sank into their beach chairs to have a rest. How they longed for delicious ice cream to cool themselves, especially the two kids!
Suddenly, my mom heard the familiar loud clang (叮当声) of the ice-cream man’s bell from her beach chair. She turned quickly and saw him briefly, spotting his distinctive green shirt and catching the gleam of his waving bell before he turned and disappeared over the dunes (沙丘).
Happily, the ice-cream man’s visit was a daily occurrence at the beach, although the lag time between the sound of his bell and the departure of his truck was not long. One must be quick enough to catch him to buy the ice cream.
Max and Charley were in great disappointment when they didn’t catch him in time that day because they really wanted to have a taste of those cool ice-creams. That was until my mom’s eyes sparkled and she said to the kids, “Never give up!” She explained to the kids that the truck might be gone, but they should be able to catch him up at its next stop. And the kids agreed immediately.

Last summer, I went to Los Angeies to visit my cousin, Mike. Mike and I were very close and could share any secret with each other. He was a little naughty sometimes although my uncle -Mike’s dad, was very strict with him.
One day, my uncle had been outside chatting with us while he was smoking a cigarette (香烟). Then my aunt called him into the house. He left his cigarette on the front door steps so he could continue smoking it when he came back out
Mike was curious to see what smoking was really like, so he picked up the cigarette to check it out. He held it between two fingers as if he were an experienced smoker and asked me if I had ever smoked before, “No way,” I said in a loud voice, “Never let my dad know about it, or he’ll beat me up,” he said. I couldn’t believe what he did next. Mike put the cigarette in bis mouth and sucked (吸) in smoke. The next thing you know, he was coughing his head off. He looked like he was about to throw up, but he still reached his hand out toward me to offer me the cigarette “Come on, try it.” he said. “It won’t hurt you. I think smoking is really cool.”
I stood there, having no idea whether I should have a try. Then I remembered this advertisement that I had seen on TV. There was a lady who was an addicted to cigarettes that she had got really sick. But she still couldn’t stop smoking. They had to cut a hole in her throat for her to breathe, and she was still smoking through the hole! It made me feel sick. I did not want my cousin to be like that at all!

“You’ll have to be quicker to beat Kendall on Friday,” Coach Dugan said. For weeks, I’d been hearing about how fast he was. I was tired of it. But I stll walked back to the starting line. A good start gives you a half success.
Eric said to me, “I heard that Kendall trains with Olympic coaches.”“What? No way,” I said. Not only that, I heard he cheats and does whatever it takes to win.
“Let’s go, boy,” Coach shouted. I got ready and exploded, driving hard toward the finishing line. I crossed two full steps ahead of everyone else. Coach clicked his stopwatch and nodded.“Better, Alex. But let’s do it again.” I couldn’t get any faster. Besides, Kendall trains with Olympic coaches!“You have to work harder,” Coach Dugan said. Easy for him to say, he wasn’t racing Kerry Kendall.
Then came the day to compete. The infield bustled (忙乱) with kids from every middle school in our district. I sat on the grass, looking for Kendall and preparing for the competition.
“Are you Alex?” a voice asked. I looked up over my shoulder, Kerry Kendal. I nodded. Kendall sat down next to me.“Heard you’re fast,” he said, touching his nose to his knee. I checked him out. His leg muscles (肌肉) looked like he worked out plenty. After a minute, he asked,“Is it true you have a private (私人的) trainer?” I laughed.“Coach Dugan was good, but he was no private trainer. Well, I heard you trained with Olympic coaches.” He was surprised. “You’re kidding, right? I train by running the hills. After practice I run those hills until my legs ache. That sounds like Olympic coaches to you?”
I finally learned the truth that for this competition Kendal had worked hard. Running the hills was tough, but he did it after his regular practices every day. I wonder how those foolish rumors (谣言) started and why I believed them. Seeing Kendall stood in place, I said, “Nice talking to you. Good luck in the dash.” He stopped and turned.“The same to you.” We looked at each other and smiled, and then he started over to join his team.

“Everything happens for the best,” my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. “If you carry on, one day something good will happen. And you’ll realize that it wouldn’t have happened if not for that previous preparation.”
Mother was right. After graduating from college, I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to a sports announcer. I got fully prepared. I watched videos of excellent sports commentators. I imitated them. I practiced reporting imaginary games again and again. Then I hitchhiked (搭车) to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station—and got turned down every time, even before I got the chance to display myself.
In one studio a kind lady told me that big stations couldn’t risk hiring an inexperienced person. “Go out in the sticks (偏远的乡村) and find a small station that’ll give you a chance,” She said. I thumbed home to Dixon Illinois.
My disappointment must have shown. “Everything happens for the best,” Mom reminded me. Exhausted and frustrated as I was, I turned on the video and began my daily practice, “Wait, what is the goalkeeper going to do? He dribbled past the opponent strikers. He didn’t pass the ball. He went on sprinting with the ball without being stopped. He scored!!! Incredible!” With the exciting comments streaming out, I regained my confidence.
The next day, Dad offered me his car to job hunt and I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already got an announcer. As I left his office, my frustration boiled over. I asked aloud, “How can a fellow get to be a sports announcer if he can’t even get a chance for a trial?”

Hearing a noise, Alan froze, feeling something was there in the darkness. A ripple of fear crept up on him as he cast a glance there. Heart beating wildly, Alan made his way to the noise, with both of his legs trembling uncontrollably. A closer look convinced him that it was only a rabbit, which quickly disappeared in the dark. In relief, he felt the gentle breeze rubbing his face. The moon shedding its silver light on the woods, Alan was greeted by the sound of birds and insects. Enveloped by fragrant air, he felt as if in the wonderland.
The next morning, the officer asked for reports. Other campers bragged about their adventure in the dark—how they ran into some “horrible” creatures and bravely scared them off. The officer, wearing a doubtful look, offered no comments. When it was Alan’s turn, he told the truth that there were no scary animals but breathtaking scenery to be explored. A smile blossomed on the officer’s face. That was exactly what the camping was all about. Only after one overcame the fear in his own heart could he embrace the real beauty of nature.

    2.    As they were walking out, I heard they were all laughing at me. Their shrill laughing let me blush with shame. I felt so embarrassed that I couldn’t do anything but sit there, keeping my body unmoved and holding back my tears. What I wanted to do is just to make friends with them. I couldn’t figure out why they laughed at me. But one thing was certain, that is, I must removed myself from their presence. Therefore, I wasn’t ready to leave until they walked far away.
Before I was ready to go home, I heard a familiar voice calling my name. I felt very strange since I was new here without making any friends. Turning around, I saw Diane who came up to me with a warm smile on her face. She said she would walk together with me. What a kind and friendly girl she was, I thought. I was deeply moved so that I left all my embarrassment and sadness behind. On our way home, we talked a lot and I was surprised to find we had a lot in common. I also realized the true meaning of a friend.

And they never know what’s going to impress them. They will tell themselves something is wonderful and keep it in mind that it’s the best thing in their life.
Lemay says, “Traveling is something you can learn from.” It’s nice and fun, but it also can be really hard. You can be uncomfortable. You can be tired. There’s frustration. So there’s a lot that you can learn from travel itself. No matter how hard their life is going to be, from the experience, they can feel that they are lucky just to have running water in their home and to be able to go to school every day with nice colorful books. No matter what they may experience in their later life, the trip will shine a light in their mind.

Her cowardice began to trouble her in a way. She turned back along the street she had come, resolving to hunt up Storm and King and enter in. On the way she encountered a great wholesale shoe company, through the broad plate windows of which she saw an enclosed executive department, hidden by frosted glass. Without this enclosure, but just within the street entrance, sat a grey-haired gentleman at a small table, with a large open ledger of some kind before him. She walked by this institution several times hesitating, but finding herself unobserved she eventually gathered sufficient courage to falter past the screen door and stood humbly waiting.
    Para.2:
“Well, young lady”, observed the old gentleman, looking at her somewhat kindly.“what do you wish for?“Do you-I mean, do you need any help? ”she stammered. He answered smiling. “Not just at present. Come in sometime next week. Occasionally we need someone. She received the answer in silence and backed awkwardly out. The pleasant nature of her reception rather astonished her. She had expected that it would be more difficult, that something cold and harsh would be said-she knew not what. That she had not been put to shame and made to feel her unfortunate position seemed remarkable. She did not realize that it was just this which made her experience easy, but the result was the same. She felt greatly relieved. Now she was expecting the so-called next week.

    5.Paragraph 1:
Their words made Messi start to consider the true meaning of a real soccer player. After returning home, Messi began to make up his mind to become a genuine player before the final. Thus, he spared no effort to practice kicking the ball, running after it and kicking it again attentively and painstakingly, regardless of wind or rain, often the beads of sweat blurring his vision but the goal in his mind becoming much clearer. Every time he felt worn out and exhausted, the words of Grace and Coach Jupiter would linger in his head, which undoubtedly lifted his spirits and pushed him to rise to his feet again. Day after day, Messi felt his muscles strengthened and his skills perfected, everything in good conditions. And clearly, all the extra hours that he’d spend practicing alone paid off.
    Paragraph 2:
Finally, it came the last game of the season between the Green Lightning and the Golden Suns again. Thinking of all the endeavor he had made for the game, Messi, fully-prepared and confident, took a deep breath and stepped into the soccer field. Instead of chasing the ball up and down aimlessly, this time, he demonstrated his excellent running kick and long pass, which helped the Green Lighting take over the game. Heart pounding wildly, he kept on running as fast as he could, and finally here came the chance! Everyone presents held their breath and later, the field exploded with thunderous applause. GOAL! All the teammates ran to him thrillingly and threw him into the sky with deafening cheers, while Messi showed his victory smile spontaneously.

    6.Paragraph 1
Through actions like these, Mr. Jean Pierre showed me that he truly cared about me as a person and wasn’t just interested in doing his job and getting paid. He taught us knowledge and answered our questions patiently. When we encountered difficulties, he worked with us to find a way. When we made progress, we shared the joy with him. Mr. Jean Pierre’s methods were just as effective as the ones my scary teachers in Haiti used. In 7th grade, the top ten students in the school were all from our class, all Mr. Jean Pierre’s students. I felt happy.
    Paragraph 2
But he was also the kind of teacher who taught us how to survive in life. He took the time to tell us how to conduct ourselves in an office environment and how to stay focused even when everything might seem to be against us. He made me realize that you can impress someone for a little while by dressing fancy, but a smart, educated mind can make a much longer-lasting impression. I know he made a big impression on me. Now I’m always looking for lessons I can take beyond the classroom.

    7. Max tried his best to lead this running team. Again, they heard a slight clang of the ice-cream man’s bell! “Be quick, Charley! The ice-cream might be over there!” Max yelled happily. Unfortunately, as they kept running, the sound gradually disappeared. So exhausted as they were, the two grandsons stopped, wiping the sweat from their faces. “Dear, never give up! Maybe the man who heard our yell is waiting for us at the square!”, my mom kept running.
Max and Charley, encouraged by my mom, ran another three blocks. Just as my mom had predicted, the truck was parked at the square, where several kids were queueing for ice-cream. When it was in their turn, Max said loudly, “Three ice-cream Sir!” Later, they sat down under the shade of a tree. Scoop by scoop, they enjoyed the most delicious ice-cream in the world. Also, it was from this experience that Max and Charley were taught the lesson of persisting and never giving up.

Suddenly, I pinched his nose and covered his mouth so that he couldn’t breathe when he didn’t notice it. He shook his hands fiercely, but I kept doing this for 1 minute. Upon his getting released and breathing in air desperately, I said, “Remember this feeling. If you keep on smoking, you won’t be able to breathe sooner or later. Don’t imitate your dad.” He burst out crying and promised not to smoke again.

10.I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling. “What was that you said about sports?” Upon hearing this, I stood there, a ray of hope gleaming before me. I turned to him and extended my ardent devotion to sports and professional skills in broadcasting, expecting a positive response. There was a short silence while MacArthur thought deeply about this. Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. My body tensed and a surge of excitement rose from the bottom of my heart as I heard his word of approval. Though nervousness took hold of me in the process, the attempt has been a roaring success. To my surprise, an internship was promised.
With the good news, I can’t resist my urge to be home. On my way home, I could hardly control my excitement. The salty tear glided down my face. As I arrived home, I can’t wait to share this with my mom, eyes brimming over with warm excited tears. Apparently, exhilaration was in the air. More than once I had depicted such a scene. The proceeding autumn, our city team won a game in the last 20 seconds. I did a 15-minute build-up to that play and that commentary met with the explosion of applause and thunderstorm cheers, which finally had me pass the internship. Many times since, I thought of my mother’s words, “If you carry on, one day something good will happen. And you should prepare yourself for the disappointment before the coming good result.” Indeed, it works.
