Oxford Dictionaries word of the year for 2022 was “goblin mode”: a type of behavior, which is self-indulgent (放纵自己的), typically in a way that rejects social expectations. It’s mindlessly watching television without worrying about the time. It’s eating snacks in bed without a care about leftover crumbs (碎屑). And it’s wearing the same nightclothes all week while working from home. “The term first appeared on Twitter in 2009 but didn’t become popular until recently. People gradually recognize their inner goblin, accepting the mess and the chaos that comes with normal life.” said Casper Grathwohl, the president of Oxford Languages.
In fact, organized mess has been on the rise, with the arrival of the term “cluttercore”: the art of having masses of stuff in their home, with colors and noise. Think messy maximalism: Chaos, but cutely displayed chaos. Clean spaces don’t lend themselves to innovation, which is why so many geniuses do their work in untidy studios or offices. They don’t see the mess — they see possibility. Ever known the type of person to store crayons in the microwave and books under the sofa? That’s probably because they function on disorder. So don’t worry! That just might spark their next genius invention.
Messy people have their own unique ways of keeping organized. You wouldn’t know from looking at their piles of stuff, but they know exactly what’s in them and how to find what they’ re looking for in time. These piles are, in fact, well-organized and everything is easy to access. Chefs, painters, writers, and scientists throughout history have often worked in similar surroundings. Only they know exactly where everything is and that’s the way they like it.
4.What can we learn from Casper Grathwohl’s words?
A.People are open to a life of mess and chaos.
B.Goblin mode goes against social expectations.
C.Goblin mode has remained popular all the time.
D.People tend to be more self-indulgent than before.
5.How should we understand “organized mess”?
A.It is an art of arranging our homes in place.
B.It helps make our home messy but colorful.
C.It enjoys greater popularity than cluttercore.
D.It is another type of chaos lovingly displayed.
6.What does the underlined word “spark” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Stimulate. B.Patent.
C.Market. D.Register.
7.What do chefs, painters, writers and scientists have in common?
A.They are always forgetting vital things.
B.They clearly know where their stuff are.
C.They look for their things from time to time.
D.They are particular about their surroundings.
The fragrance of pressed grapes perfumes the mountain air in the small village of Tharma in Sangri county of the Tibetan autonomous region this time of year.
Grape cultivation in the county, which is the highest location on the planet where grapes are grown, sits at an average altitude of 3600 meters above sea level. It has increased the wealth of the residents and created a whole new local industry that is prospering. Organic grape growing was introduced to the county, which is blessed by a mild climate and moderate sunshine, via an Aid-Tibet project funded by Hunan province, and since 2011,the cultivation area has increased from less than 1 hectare(公顷) to nearly 666 hectares. The vineyards in Sangri county were recognized in 2021 for their production of green, pollution-free products.
“The harvest season for grapes and the best time for making wine are right now. We’ve finished with picking the grapes and we’ve been busy making wine lately,” Luo Minglu, a manager at Sangri County Pakdrub Rongshun Zhuangyuan Co-which operates the business-was quoted as saying by China News Service.
The company has played a key role in bringing suppliers and local households together to produce wine and other products that have improved the standard of living in the area.
Between 2016 and 2022, the company’s cumulative (累积的) grape yield reached 590 metric tons. More than 500 villagers were employed last year, with more than 2.9 million yuan($406,000) spent on salaries. The grape yield and the wine production of the company had reached 350 tons and 150 tons by 2022, respectively.
Yangjen Lhamo, an employee at Sangri County Pakdrub Rorgshun Zhuangyuan, said she and her sister have worked at the company for years, and not only do they enjoy their toils and spoils (辛勤劳作) but the vineyards are located very close to home. “I earn nearly 6,000, yuan a month, and I am very pleased with my job,” she said. “Thanks to the good policies from the government, it is easy to have a better life if we work hard.

It is currently the harvest season for Christian Nachtwey, who operates an apple farm, or orchard, in the western German town of Gelsdorf.
A reporter from The Associated Press (AP) recently visited Nachtwey as workers loaded up red Elstarapples ready to be shipped to stores. In addition to apples, Nachtwey’s farm also produces a second harvest: electricity. Many of the farm’s trees grow beneath solar panels that have been producing power during this year’s unusually sunny summer. In addition to providing electricity, the panels protect the fruit below with shade.
Nachtwey said the idea behind the farm is simple. The design protects the trees from getting too much sun without reducing the available growing area. “On top of that, there’s the solar electricity being generated on the same land,” Nachtwey said. Putting solar equipment on the same land as crops is becoming increasingly popular in Europe and North America. Farmers are finding that this model can make the most of their land, while establishing a second way to earn money.
But getting the right mix of crops and solar panels is difficult. Most fruit requires specific growing conditions. Even small changes in the environment can harm crops and cause financial losses. Even if the fruit survives, it might turn the wrong color or be less sweet and may be difficult to sell. For this reason, Nachtwey is working with researchers to test which kinds of apples do well under a solar cover. He is also investigating which kinds of solar panels work best in the orchard. For testing purposes, Nachtwey covered some of his trees with a traditional netting material. It is normally used to protect sensitive crops from damaging weather events.
Juergen Zimmer is an expert in the area’s agricultural services department. He told the AP that apples grown under the solar covers were a little less sweet this year than those under the nets.
Researchers hope the tests will show that fruit crops perform well under solar panels.

One day, a young man went to Dr. Conwell and told him he wanted a college education but couldn’t afford it. Dr. Conwell decided, at that moment, what his aim in life was, besides being a man of the cloth. He decided to build a university for unfortunate, but deserving, students. He did have a challenge, however. He would need a few million dollars to build the university. For Dr. Conwell, and anyone with real purpose in life, nothing could stand in the way of his goal.
Several years before this incident, Dr. Conwell was attracted by a true story with its ageless moral. The story was about a farmer who lived in Africa and through a visitor became excited about looking for diamonds. Diamonds were already discovered in abundance on the African continent and this farmer got so excited about the idea of millions of dollars’ worth of diamonds that he sold his farm to head for the diamond line. He wandered all over the continent, constantly searching for diamonds, wealth, which he never found. Eventually he went completely broke and threw himself into a river and died.
Meanwhile, the new owner of his farm picked up an unusual-looking rock about the size of an egg and put it on his mantle (斗篷) as a sort of curiosity. A visitor stopped by. He told the new owner that the funny-looking rock was about the biggest diamond that had ever been found. The new owner shouted, “God, the whole farm is covered with them.”
The farm turned out to be the Kimberly Diamond Mine, the richest the world has ever known. The original farmer was literally standing on “Acres of Diamonds” until he sold his farm.
Dr. Conwell learned from the story of the farmer and continued to teach its moral. Opportunity does not just come along; it is there all the time-we just have to see it. Dr. Conwell told the story over and over again on many occasions for raising money to start the college for poor students. In fact, he raised nearly six million dollars and the university he founded, Temple University in Philadelphia, has at least ten degree-granting colleges and six other schools.
16.What caused Dr. Conwell to build a university?

Why late-night eating is something you should absolutely avoid? It’s long been popular advice for people looking to lose weight to avoid late night eating. It’s no wonder, with a host of research showing that late-night eating is linked to greater body weight. But until now, few studies have actually investigated why. This is what a recent U.S. study set out to uncover.
Researchers had 16 participants follow two different meal schedules, each for a period of six days total. The first group had their meals early in the day with the last meal consumed six hours and 40 minutes before bedtime. The second group had their daily meals four hours later. This meant they skipped breakfast and instead had lunch, dinner and an evening meal. Their last meal was consumed only two and a half hours before sleep. All the participants consumed an identical diet, and all of their meals were equally spaced with around four hours between them.
The researchers looked at three measures associated with weight gain: the influence of appetite, the impact of eating time on calories burned, and changes of fat tissue. They found that compared to an early eating pattern, late eating not only increased feelings of hunger the following day, it also increased the rate of “hunger” hormones (激素) in the blood. Late eating also caused a decrease in calories burned the following day. Fat tissue samples taken from the participants also showed the increased fat storage. These results indicate that late eating could lead to weight gain.
Given the study was only conducted on a limited number of participants and over a very short time, more research will be needed to further understand whether these changes are only temporary, and what effects long-tern late-night eating can have on the weight gain mechanisms (机制).
Anyway this study adds to a growing body of evidence showing just how important meal timing can be when it comes to body weight. Therefore, people who are watching their weight may want to ditch the late-night snacks and favor eating most of their meals earlier.

Life was not kind to a sweet Boxer-Pit Bull mix. Dog fighting had cruelly taken away his left ear. In 2019, the 4-year-old arrived at a rescue in North Carolina and was then named Van Gogh. Christy Langley explains he was named after the famous painter “not because he is an artist, but because he is a work of art”. What Lang-ley couldn’t predict (预测) was that Van Gogh would actually go on to be a successful artist.
Gartner owns a shelter that helps dogs in shelters that are at risk of being put down. She saw Van Gogh and immediately knew she needed to help. So, she took Van Gogh in from North Carolina in June 2022. Gartner started telling everyone about the friendly and lovely Van Gogh on Facebook, Pet finder, and Rescue Me, but no one responded.
After months of searching for a new owner, Gartner had a new idea. Why not take Van Gogh’s name literally? Gartner explained. “He certainly had the name and the ear for it.” Gartner got to work, putting some paint on a canvas (油画布), wrapping it in a plastic bag, and coating it with peanut butter (花生酱) as a tasty treat for the pup. It only took five minutes for Van Gogh to lick the plastic-coated canvas clean and for a work of art to be created.
They worked on paintings for about a week and then, Gartner invited people to an outdoor art gallery event on October 23, 2022. Sadly, only two people showed up. The next day, Gartner put out a post on Facebook that she felt bad only two people showed up, and said the rest of the paintings were still waiting for their owners. Suddenly, Van Gogh’s pieces were hot items. After two minutes, the paintings were sold out and Gartner raised around $1,000 for her rescue. The biggest success of all, though, was that on the last day of the silent sale, Van Gogh was finally adopted (收养).

In a new finding that goes against current conservation patterns, re-introducing wolves and other predators (捕食者) to our landscapes does not amazingly reduce deer populations, restore worsening ecosystems or significantly threaten livestock (家禽), according to a new study.
“The hopes and fears that we have on both sides of the debate—neither are realized,” said conservation biologist Bernd Blossey, professor of natural resources and the environment at Cornell University. On the one hand, there is little evidence for claims that re-introducing large predators such as wolves, bears and mountain lions is a major threat to livestock and wild animals such as white-tailed deer and mule deer. When the wolf was taken off the endangered species list, hunters and livestock producers, and some state governments, called for action to safeguard the wildlife they wanted to hunt and the livestock that was their livelihood. But it is nearly impossible to independently evaluate those claims, Blossey said. Other factors also kill livestock, from lightning strikes to extreme weather and diseases.
On the other hand, the claim that wolves and other predators can control deer populations and restore worsening ecosystems lacks evidence as well. “Meaningfully reducing deer populations in Wisconsin alone would require tens of thousands of wolves, which is ecologically and socially impossible,” said Blossey. And wolves alone can’t repair the ecological damage humans have done, he said. A popular video “How wolves change rivers,” which has been viewed more than 43 million times, suggests that the re-introduction of wolves in Yellowstone National Park benefited the entire ecosystem. “I was as fooled like everybody else by the lovely stories that came out of Yellowstone saying, you bring wolves back, and you restore the rivers, and everything’s satisfactory,” said Blossey.
We should see large predators like wolves as a valuable part ecological communities in their own right, Blossey said, and not just for their function. “As long as people learn to live with and tolerate the new (old) neighbors, a careful but not fully conflict-free existence appears possible,” said Blossey.
28.Which of the following does Blossey probably agree with?
A.The loss of livestock may not necessarily be due to wolves.
B.People should not take wolves off the endangered species list
C.People should take action to protect livestock and wild animals.
D.The threat to predators comes from climate change and diseases.

A.Tolerant. B.Unclear.
C.Doubtful. D.Favorable.
30.What does Bernd Blossey say about large predators in the last paragraph?
A.They upset the balance of the ecosystem.
B.They should rightfully stay in their habitats.
C.They are key to restoring the environment.
D.They change people’s view about rewilding.
31.What is the text mainly about?
A.The value of humans’ living together with animals
B.The importance of restoring worsening ecosystems.
C.A debate over the threat to livestock and wild animals.
D.A clarification of the effects of bringing back the wolves.
According to the World Health Organization, a global group that studies public health, 1.1 billion young adults are at risk of developing hearing loss. Smartphones are largely to blame. Can some headphones really damage your hearing?
Nerves carry messages to each other, such as sounds or sensations. Most hearing loss is the result of nerve wreck. Scientists use decibels to measure volume. You can listen to 85 decibels pretty much all day without causing any damage. That is about the noise level of busy city traffic. Things quickly become dangerous once you get louder than that. The noise level produced at a rock concert or by a chain saw is about 115 decibels. At this level, damage can happen in less than a minute. You might not immediately notice large hearing loss. It will add up over time. Some smartphones can crank (调高) music to 120 decibels. Say: you listen to 10 songs in a row at that volume. You might notice hearing loss by the time you take off your headphones.
What kind of headphones should people use? All of them have different benefits and downsides. Ear buds have a bad reputation because they sit in your ear canal. This allows them to release the sound closer to your ear. That means what you hear is almost the full force of the sound. Big, padded over-ear headphones do not sit as close to your eardrum. They still trap in sound, though. Sound from these headphones also reaches your eardrum at nearly full force. Then there are some special over-ear headphones, the kind with foam (泡沫) earphone covers which are better at blocking noise. They deliver sound around your ear instead of straight into it. It might not sound as good, but it’s healthier for your ears. Solid-plastic in-ear headphones are not very good at blocking out background noise. This might make you want to pump up the volume.
Doctors recommend that their patients get fitted for headphones which will help block background noise. In theory, this should encourage people to listen at lower volumes. But they are not sure it works that way because they think people just have a habit of turning it all the way up.
32.What does the word “wreck” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Loss. B.Damage. C.Tension. D.Decrease.
33.Which activity will probably damage your hearing?
A.Driving at the city center. B.Enjoying ten songs.
C.Using a chain saw. D.Watching an action movie.
34.What can you infer from paragraph 3?
A.It is the volume that really damages people’s hearing
B.It’s unnecessary to turn down the volume for people with normal hearing
C.Picking right headphones has nothing to do with people’s hearing.
D.A good pair of headphones can adjust the volume of the smartphone.
35.What kind of headphone do doctors probably recommend people to use?
A.Solid-plastic in-ear headphones. B.Tiny in-ear headphones.
C.Big padded over-ear headphones. D.Special over-ear headphones.

We’ve all been told that different types of fruits and vegetables have different benefits that help us keep healthy. A new international study has found that eating one fruit regularly can help reduce the risk of cancer (癌症), among those people who have a high risk of developing certain cancers.
The research, which followed almost 1,000 patients with a variety of cancers, found that taking regular resistant starch (抗酶解淀粉) could have a great preventative effect on the risk of cancer. Here’s what you need to know about how eating bananas regularly can help reduce the risk of cancers.
Resistant starch is found in green bananas. By eating green bananas your body gets resistant starch, which has been found to reduce the risk of cancers in some parts of the body by more than a half, according to the new research. The study, which was published in Cancer Prevention Research, was led by experts at the Universities of Newcastle and Leeds. It found that resistant starch, if taken regularly for two years, had a very good effect on some cancers, which can be difficult to find.
John Mathers, a professor at Newcastle University explained, “Resistant starch really helps in fact, which has several health benefits and fewer calories than regular starch.”
In addition to green bananas, resistant starch is also found in foods such as peas, beans and other starchy foods. In terms of bananas, experts think that eating one banana every day has the same effect as a certain amount of resistant starch. The secret is to eat the bananas before they become too ripe (成熟的) or soft.
45.What advantage does eating bananas regularly have?
A.Avoid developing diseases. B.Suffer from no stress.
C.Have a lower risk of cancer. D.Expect a longer life.
46.Why can green bananas often help reduce the risk of cancer?

As 3D printing technology improves, people keep finding new uses for it. And the latest is pretty sweet: cheesecake. Researchers with the department of mechanical engineering at Columbia University created a seven-ingredient slice of cake using a 3D printer, and they say printing foods could be a new cooking option with several benefits.
Such printers have been used to make organs before, and similar technologies already exist in the food space 一like pizza and bread robots, pasta printers and automatic cake decorators, the researchers say in the study, published in the NPJ Science and Food journal.
The researchers defined printed food as“the controlled deposition(沉淀), of an ingredient; as such, any ingredient that was pushed into paste(酱),” and they say many existing processed foods can be considered “printed” by this definition. So, in order to make the 3D-printed peanut butter -banana cheesecake with a cherry coat, all the ingredients had to be converted into paste-like substances. All seven ingredients were put in to the 3D printer and then printed out in layers into the shape of a piece of cheesecake.
The researchers say 3D printing food could allow cooks to control the nutrient content in a meal and also offer the ability to make more customized meals. It also reduces human contact with food, which could prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses and diseases.
They also see sustainability benefits to printing food, because ingredients can be locally sourced, plant-based meals can be created and the shelf life of the foods could be extended.
Printing food could also help people with swallowing and other digestive disorders,by providing new food options, rather than the bland foods they may be restricted to.
While some processed foods could have better taste, texture, cleanliness and shelf lives, processing foods can also degrade their nutrients. However, the researchers hope developing the 3D printing technology can help prevent nutrient degradation while processing foods.

An 8-year-old boy with a dream set out to realise a big goal, and almost everyone thought that it was a challenging task.
Nash, a third grader from Lexington, Kentucky, was on autumn break when he decided to apply for a job to earm enough money for his mother’s birthday gift. Belinda Johnson, Nash’s mother, said the 8-year-old boy had seen a hiring (招聘) sign outside of a Drake’s restaurant near his grandmother’s house and went online to hand in his application for consideration.
On the application, Nash expressed his wish to buy a birthday gift for his mother. At the very bottom of the application, he said that he was 8 years old. When the kitchen manager saw the application, she just thought that he forgot to put the 1 in front of the 8. When the team at Drake’s heard Nash’s story, they felt they could do something for this young man. They invited Nash and his family to join the Drake’s team and later, a cook named Thornburg personally presented Nash with his very own Drake’s uniform.
Even though Nash didn’t get the job—the minimum (最小的) age for that type of job in Kentucky is 16, after all. Thomburg said that Nash was very interested in the role anyway. Then Thornburg showed Nash what the restaurant’s dish machine looked like and how it worked. When Nash was older, his mom said be wanted to go to work at Drake’s. Here’s a recipe for a good animal rescue story: Take one residential creek (小溪), add one lone dolphin and then bring in 28 determined biologists. Mix well and enjoy the happy ending.
A young dolphin wandered off its usual path and ended up in a creek in Clearwater, Florida. Biologists with Clearwater Marine Aquarium had been monitoring it since Jan. 1. It appeared reluctant to return to open waters via a small opening under a bridge. “Since monitoring began, the dolphin had not left the creek,” the aquarium said last week. “This posed potential long-term problems. Dolphins are naturally sociable creatures, so if they are isolated from other dolphins, they may turn their attention to human interaction.” This can be dangerous, both for dolphins and humans. Humans who get too close to dolphins can find themselves with injuries such as broken bones.
Clearwater Marine Aquarium partnered with NOAA Fisheries and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission to guard the dolphin to safety. A team of 28 biologists got into the water to form a human chain, creating a visual and sound barrier to aim the dolphin out of the creek. It’s not easy to pull off a human chain in a creek. The biologists had to stay shoulder to shoulder and navigate trees and docks without giving the dolphin an opportunity to slip by. The human encouragement worked, though there was a moment of uncertainty as the team members neared the bridge and weren’t sure if the dolphin went through.
The biologists celebrated the dolphin’s arrival on the other side.“It was very exciting after almost 20 plus days for him to finally be out of the canal,” said senior rescue biologist Brittany Baldrica.
The wandering dolphin stands a good chance back out in the wild. “We noted that the animal was in good body condition with normal breathing rates and was displaying normal behavior during observations” the aquarium said.
Happy ending achieved.

My zodiac sign (生肖) is horse.I live in a small town in Yunnan on the historic Tea Horse Road. I remember when I was very young, old people told me about the horse-carriage traders who had traveled that trail for centuries, carrying tea, silks, ivory, and other goods to markets as far away as India. There was usually a head horse leading the way.
My family has lived in my hometown of Xizhou for many generations. I have to admit that when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet without any modern transportation, I was blown away. I couldn’t imagine that there could be such an unusual person in the world. So it was even more surprising when one day last May, I found myself buying a standing-room ticket on a high-speed train to Shanghai to meet him.
Paul told me it was his first time in China. He talked to me with excitement about the history and discovery in my region of China. One would cross a thousand oceans and climb a thousand mountains to meet people one is destined to meet, a Chinese saying goes. I think destiny brought me Paul. I finally made my biggest decision. I would try my best to accompany Paul for hundreds of miles on his walk toward my home of Yunnan.
On September 28, we finally set out. We woke up at sunrise and rested at sunset. Nature does not hurry. We climbed a lot of mountains, only to reach yet another mountain; we crossed a lot of rivers, only to reach yet another river. We met many people on the road, many beautiful souls, simple souls, warm souls, decent souls. I came to an unexpected realization. Walking for its own sake, while healthy and admirable, is only a small part of the benefit. A deeper reward is rediscovering the world around us, shortening the distance between each other, and sharing each other’s cultures.
61.Why does the author mention his zodiac sign?
A.To suggest that he can walk long and fast like a horse.
B.To indicate his ancestors are the horse-carriage traders.
C.To introduce traditional Chinese culture to foreign readers.
D.To show his special connection with the Tea Horse Road and Paul.
62.What does the underlined words “was blown away” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Was actually taken in. B.Was impressed strongly.
C.Was attracted immediately. D.Was completely scared away.
63.What is the author’s biggest decision?
A.Being a walking partner of Paul.
B.Inviting Paul to his home of Yunnan.
C.Accompanying Paul for a whole life.
D.Meeting the one he is destined to meet.
64.What can we learn from the text?
A.Either your body or soul must be on the way.
B.A healthy beggar is happier than a sick king.
C.It doesn’t really help to walk fast but walk far.
D.Culture makes people understand each other better.

There’s a good reason people say laughter is the best medicine. In a recent study from Rehabilitation Nursing Journal, researchers looked at changes in loneliness for older adults in nursing homes after receiving laughter therapy (疗法). Each of the 31 participants received laughter therapy twice a week for six weeks, while the same number of controls only received usual care. At the end of the six weeks, those who participated in laughter therapy reported less loneliness than the control group.
Laughter therapy is a low-key option that you can practice in many ways. Jenna Pascual, a laughter yoga teacher, hosts group and one-on-one classes with seniors. She starts by guiding people through warmups to get comfortable with stimulating laughter. These may involve deep breathing exercises, clapping and light stretches paired with laughter, and call-and-response laughter. She then transitions (转变) to laughter around a theme, such as a Hawaiian beach party or Star Wars, pairing laughter with small movements.
Many forms of laughter therapy are available to all. “Laughter therapy is great for people with disabilities,” says Katie Ziskind, a marriage and family therapist. Pascual also works with people in wheelchairs or hospital beds.
Rehabilitation Nursing’s study is one in a long line of research confirming laughter’s ability to improve well-being in older adults. In a 2015 study from the International Journal of Nursing and Midwifery, people aged 60 or older at a retirement center attended two 90-minute laughter therapy classes a week for six weeks. At the end of the experiment, participants had improved general health. In a 2016 study from Nursing Open, older adults at an elderly daycare center had laughter therapy once a week for four weeks. The participants experienced reduced depression, along with increased sociability.
While you can try laughter therapy alone, there are advantages to doing it with others. “I want to stress the power of simply hearing laughter and watching others enjoying themselves laughing,” says Pascual. “I’ve worked with seniors who were not in the mood to laugh, but after hearing and watching others laugh in my classes, they ended up laughing with us.”
68.How did the researchers do the recent study?
A.By offering participants different types of laughter therapy
B.By controlling the time of laughter therapy for the same participants.
C.By studying the effects of laughter therapy on disabled people.
D.By comparing participants having laughter therapy with those not having.
69.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Why laughter is the best medicine. B.How seniors react to laughter therapy.
C.What Pascual does to help disabled people. D.How Pascual teaches her laughter yoga classes.
70.Why does the author mention the two studies in paragraph 4?
A.To compare them with the recent study. B.To show the benefits of laughter therapy.
C.To state the popularity of laughter therapy. D.To talk about old people’s health problems.
71.What do Pascual’s words in the last paragraph show?
A.Making a person laugh is hard. B.Laughter helps reduce loneliness.
C.People may laugh at different things. D.Laughter can spread among people.
What began as a summer job has now taken young Brennan McVey to the steps of the Rockaway Township Municipal building and the mayor’s (镇长的) office. Known by his neighbors and the township as the “Rubbish Bin Manager”, McVey was given a special mention during the regular Rockaway Township Council meeting on October 25, for his work to help his neighbors and prevent unwanted run-ins with the local bear population. “Our children are our future, and when a child can respond to needs by making a decision that gives a community a chance to improve its quality of life, it represents a great moment for our township. McVey is a shining example of a positive person,” Mayor Michael Dachisen read to the public.
The 10-year-old Green Pond boy had an idea in 2016 of helping to stop bears in his neighborhood from becoming endangered “troublemakers” by helping his neighbors take out the rubbish the morning of its pickup.
McVey, who is a fifth-grader at Katherine D.Malone Elementary School, noticed that some of his neighbors would leave the rubbish out the night before, an open invitation to bears. “I saw a lot of bears in the neighborhood and I thought I could help,” he said. On collection day, McVey gets up early in the morning and heads to the houses of the neighbors who agreed to pay a small fee to have the young businessman bring out their rubbish to the curb (路缘).
“We had a lot of bear sightings in our community. This is one way to stop the bears from coming in by keeping the food source out of their way,” the mayor added.
McVey has turned the Rubbish Bin Manager into a business, posting fliers (传单) around Green Pond, and his neighborhood has really taken to the idea.
72.What can we infer about McVey from the first paragraph?
A.He is well recognized. B.He really loves bears.
C.He is thankful for Dachisen’s work. D.He has always been willing to take a summer job.
73.Why does McVey pick up the rubbish on collection day?
A.To make money. B.To leave food for bears.
C.To protect the environment. D.To help bears and the community.
74.What did McVey’s neighbors think of his business?
A.It was great. B.It was too risky for him.
C.It went against a lot of old ideas. D.It would stay popular for a short time.
75.Which of the following can best describe McVey?
A.Brave and strict. B.Caring and warm-hearted.
C.Humorous and open-minded. D.Talkative and sporty.

根据第二自然段“On the one hand, there is little evidence for claims that re-introducing large predators such as wolves, bears and mountain lions is a major threat to livestock and wild animals such as white-tailed deer and mule deer. (一方面,几乎没有证据表明重新引入狼、熊和山狮等大型食肉动物是对牲畜和白尾鹿和骡鹿等野生动物的主要威胁。)”可知,Blossey认为牲畜的损失不一定是因为狼。故选A。
根据第三自然段“On the other hand, the claim that wolves and other predators can control deer populations and restore worsening ecosystems lacks evidence as well. ”(另一方面,关于狼和其他食肉动物可以控制鹿的数量并恢复日益恶化的生态系统的说法也缺乏证据)““I was as fooled like everybody else by the lovely stories that came out of Yellowstone saying, you bring wolves back, and you restore the rivers, and everything’s satisfactory,” said Blossey. (Blossey说:“我和其他人一样被黄石公园传出的可爱故事愚弄了,这些故事说,你把狼带回来,你恢复了河流,一切都很令人满意。”)”可知,Blossey对视频“狼如何改变河流”持怀疑态度。故选C。
30.推理判断题。根据最后一段“We should see large predators like wolves as a valuable part ecological communities in their own right, Blossey said, and not just for their function. “As long as people learn to live with and tolerate the new (old) neighbors, a careful but not fully conflict-free existence appears possible,” said Blossey.
根据第二自然段“On the one hand, there is little evidence for claims that re-introducing large predators such as wolves, bears and mountain lions is a major threat to livestock and wild animals such as white-tailed deer and mule deer. (一方面,几乎没有证据表明重新引入狼、熊和山狮等大型食肉动物是对牲畜和白尾鹿和骡鹿等野生动物的主要威胁。)”和第三自然段“On the other hand, the claim that wolves and other predators can control deer populations and restore worsening ecosystems lacks evidence as well. (另一方面,关于狼和其他食肉动物可以控制鹿的数量并恢复日益恶化的生态系统的说法也缺乏证据。)”可知,本文主要对带回狼群的影响进行了澄清。故选D。

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了耳机对耳朵健康的影响以及不同耳机的不同效能和影响。
32.词句猜测题。根据第一段最后一句“Can some headphones really damage your hearing? (有些耳机真的会损害你的听力吗?)”可知,下文将探讨耳机对听力的损害情况。根据第二段第一句和第二句划线句“Nerves carry messages to each other, such as sounds or sensations. Most hearing loss is the result of nerve wreck. (神经相互传递信息,如声音或感觉。多数听力受损都是由神经…导致的)”可知,此处提及了听力受损这一现象,且指出是由于用于传递信息的神经出现什么问题,可推测是神经无法正常运行,即被损害。故可推测划线词和damage“损害,损坏”意思相近,而其他选项loss“损失”,tension“紧张”和decrease“减少”不符合语境。故选B项。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段第7至8句“The noise level produced at a rock concert or by a chain saw is about 115 decibels. At this level, damage can happen in less than a minute. (摇滚音乐会或链锯产生的噪音水平约为115分贝。在这个级别上,损坏可能在不到一分钟的时间内发生)”可知,链锯产生的噪音可能会损害听力。故选C项。
34.推理判断题。根据第三段后五句“Then there are some special over-ear headphones, the kind with foam (泡沫) earphone covers which are better at blocking noise. They deliver sound around your ear instead of straight into it. It might not sound as good, but it’s healthier for your ears. Solid-plastic in-ear headphones are not very good at blocking out background noise. This might make you want to pump up the volume. 故选A项。
根据最后一段第一句“Doctors recommend that their patients get fitted for headphones which will help block background noise. (医生建议他们的病人戴上耳机,这将有助于阻挡背景噪音)”可知,医生应该会推荐病人戴能阻挡噪音的耳机;根据第三段倒数第五句“Then there are some special over-ear headphones, the kind with foam (泡沫) earphone covers which are better at blocking noise. (还有一些特殊的入耳式耳机,那种带有泡沫耳机盖的耳机,更能阻挡噪音)”可推知,特殊的入耳式耳机能有效阻挡噪音,可以被推荐给病人。故选D项。
