This new little stepsister is getting on my nerves. She won’t stop talking. What was Dad trying to prove with this family vacation? We can’t instantly become the ideal family. I just became a teenager, and Christina is only 8 years old.
Dad and I finished putting up the large tent. Then I walked back to the car for my backpack, only to knock a pink one to the ground. Before I could pick it up, Christina appeared. “Why’d you throw my stuff on the ground?” she roared.
After lunch, Dad suggested I take Christina to see the sequoia pines (红杉松树), circling on the map where giant sequoias were.
I jammed the map into my pocket and then set off. When I glanced back at Christina, all I saw was a pink cap. I shook my head. Dad and my new stepmom were crazy if they thought we’d instantly bond. I was not ready to be a big brother.
As we walked the trail, the forest canopy (树冠) became thicker, blocking out direct sunlight, making the temperature drop slightly.
“You warm enough?” I asked. She nodded but didn’t look at me. I noticed her hands had got completely covered with the sap (汁液) of a plant. I took a hand wipe from my pack and wiped her hands.
Reaching a small hill, we climbed up it. Sunshine filled the meadow (草地) below. I could see the tops of sequoia pines popping out above the forest on the other side. I pointed them out excitedly to Christina and finally saw a smile light her face.
“Come on, Sean!” She grabbed my hand and pulled me down into the meadow. Then I saw it, sitting on a rock in the middle of the field: a brown-colored bear cub (幼熊). Cute as it seemed, I knew it was dangerous.

2.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Public places have been difficult for my family since Myles was diagnosed with autism(自闭症) at two. He had quickly turned into a silent child frozen in a world completely inaccessible to us. One time, I got up the courage to take Myles out to Golden Corral without my husband. Lots of people and noise caused overload for him. First came the screaming, and then more noises. With my nerves stretched thin, I noticed a sweet old lady coming my way.
“Can you keep him quiet?” she snapped. “I’m trying to eat!”
I held my tongue out of respect for my elders. I apologized and left with as much dignity as I could. I had to escape the weight of the eyes around. After that, I built a wall around my heart to protect my heart from other people’s opinions about my family. I still had the great privilege of raising this very special child. It didn’t matter what anyone thought, but I had lost something. I stopped looking for the opportunity to help them understand. I assumed the worst about them.
So when I was back at Golden Corral with my son, who started shouting and hitting the table again, I looked up at the middle-aged woman approaching. Her face was calm as she assessed the situation. If she complained about my son’s behavior, I was prepared to fight back.
“I hope you don’t mind me asking,” she said. “But does your son have autism?”
“Yeah,” I replied to the lady, who was waiting patiently.
“Well, I raised a child with autism. My name is Pam,” she said. “If you ever need any help, please call me. I have connection with a lot of people like you and me.” I looked at the hands she extended, holding a slip of paper with her name and number on it.
“Thank you,” I managed to whisper.
“Call me,” she said, smiling at me, and saving a special, knowing smile for Myles before walking away.

3.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It started out as a normal spring morning. Fern was busy setting the table for breakfast when her father had been to the hoghouse(猪圈)with an ax. Fern, who was only eight, just wondered why he needed an ax. Curiosity drove her to ask her mom.
“Well,” replied Mrs Arable, “some pigs were born last night but one of the pigs is a weakling(虚弱的猪). It is very small and weak, and it will never amount to anything. So your father has decided to do away with it.”
Fern trembled with anger, unable to believe what she had heard. Noticing Fern’s reaction, Mrs Arable continued to explain, “Your father is right. The pig would probably die anyway.”
Fern pushed a chair out of the way and stormed outdoors. The grass was wet and the earth smelled of springtime. Fern’s sneakers were sopping(浸湿)by the time she caught up with her father. Desperately, she begged her father not to kill the pig, sobbing it was unfair. “Fern,” Mr Arable turned to his little girl and said gently, “you will have to learn to control yourself.”
“Control myself?” yelled Fern. “This is a matter of life and death, and you talk about controlling myself.” With tears streaming down her cheeks, she reached out for the ax and tried to pull it out of her father’s hand.
However, Mr Arable took no notice of her words, thinking it was another mischief (胡闹)and went on with what he had been doing. Anxious but determined, Fern cried out, “The pig couldn’t help being born small, could it? If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me?"
Saying a firm “No” as an answer, Mr Arable smiled in great amazement and looked down at his daughter with love. “This is different. A little girl is one thing, a weak pig is another.” It seemed he didn’t intend to change his mind. Fern would not give in either, still hanging on to the ax. “This is the most terrible case of injustice I’ve ever heard of!”

4.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I arrived home from school, night was falling. A call came from the public: a bird of unknown species was being attacked by a group of noisy children in his front garden. He scared them off and grabbed their victim. I immediately called for my classmate Jack to the spot.
We were standing in front of a stranger’s house in an unfamiliar street, rescue box in hand. My head full of instructions to follow. “The bird would be our first test as a volunteer wildlife rescuer!” Jack said excitedly. We had completed the two-day intensive training course the previous month and learned the basic skills of rescuing animals in various situations.
But we were anxious, too. After all, it was the first time for us to rescue a bird. Would I be able to transfer the bird neatly into my rescue box? Many worries flashed in my mind. Sensing my unease about the act ahead, Jack said, “These things are pretty easy to deal with!”
I was wondering what kind of bird it was when a kind-looking man appeared and led us inside to see our very first patient. I lifted the edge of the shoe box very slightly to see an angry-looking bird standing to attention on very thin and long legs, together with a slice of banana and a small dish of water. He didn’t know its true name but the folks called the creature Red Fan. “It’s eaten some banana,” said the man proudly. The poor soul seemed rather nervous, so l decided not to grab it by hand but just transfer the whole shoe box into my rescue box.
Back home, we could only see some minor injuries in the left wing, but there was no blood on its feathers. Jack managed to treat the injuries with some iodophor (碘伏药水). We assessed its condition to find out if it was appropriate to release the bird the next day. How could we help it spend the night peacefully? We hadn’t seen this species of bird before, let alone its habits.

5.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I live on the west coast of Canada and my older son lives on its east coast. He has visited his mother and me a number of times and we have visited him there with some frequency. We also talk with each other using a computer communications programme. However, because of Covid-19 travel restrictions and the extremely long distance between us, we hadn’t seen him in person for more than two years. His mother is ill and can’t travel any more so we had talked about a possible future visit with him coming but nothing had been decided, or so I thought.
Then, one day, there was a knock on the door and when I opened it, my son walked in, carrying a pot of flowers. For a moment, I didn’t know who he was and then, suddenly, he was there. He hadn’t told us he was coming and seeing him was a shock and a wonderful surprise. It had been years since I last cried. But when he walked in, I was in tears.
I think that as parents, we tend to think of our children as being young and being in need of our help even when they have reached adulthood. We have two sons, both of them grown, and we love them both but they are still, to us, our kids. Somehow, though, the sudden appearance of my older son and his month-long visit that followed let me see him in a whole new light.

6.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Go home and ask your mummy about your blind brother! I am surprised you didn’t know that he is as blind a sabat!” Hearing Nathan’swords, I wanted to land a blow on him for making fun of my two-year-old brother, David, but I was more desperate to find out the truth.
With a misty vision, I ran home as fast as I could. Still out of breath, I questioned, “Is David blind?” Mother turned to me with tears in her eyes. “Yes, he’s born blind.” It was a heartbreaking moment. I knew clearly the dream of showing David my cool soccer moves or playing videogames with him ended cruelly. “Why did you keep the truth from me? I often wondered why he didn’t look at me or why he was always tripping over things and I thought it was because he was still too young...” Before I could continue any further, mother hugged me and cried, “I’m sorry, Caleb. Dad and I just didn’t know how to tell you.”
Suddenly, it struck me that David was blind but he could still hear the whole conversation. Not wanting him to be affected by it, I stopped crying and went forward and embraced him. “I love you so much, David.” Worry crept upon me: How hard life would be for him!
Little did I know that David was to inspire me so greatly.
As David grew up, he was fairly strong-willed. Despite the challenges that he faced, he continued to attend the school for visually impaired children. He insisted he would take the bus home on his own. Often, he would walk through the main door looking sheepish and saying the same phrase, “Sorry Mum, I am late. I boarded the wrong bus again.”
Tough as life was, there was always silver lining of misfortune. Despite not being able to see, he could play a piece of music after listening to it being played once on the piano. He even dreamed of playing solo (独奏) one day onstage. Luckily for him, the school had discovered David’s extraordinary talent.

7.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was an early Saturday morning, about 5:30 am. My mom called to me, “Austin, get up! Time to go and serve the homeless!” I dragged myself out of bed.
I started serving the homeless when I was eight years old. I didn’t know these people would make such a big difference in my life.
Two Saturdays a month I go to the church and help get things ready for breakfast. When the gate is opened, people come rushing in to get coffee, juice or milk. They take their seats while breakfast is prepared, and then we begin to serve. We each grab two plates and carry them down the line as the plates are filled. Each person receives two pancakes, a scoop of eggs, hashbrowns, and two sausages. I walk to the tables where the people are sitting and set the plates before them. I always make sure that I smile. After I’ve served them, I ask if they need anything else and bring them whatever they ask for. Some say thank you, some don’t, but I don’t care. I’m there to serve them.
When I first started serving, I was a little scared. Some of the people were wearing clothes with patches on them and shoes with holes in them. They were not that clean and their teeth were yellow or missing. At first I stayed close to my mom most of the time, but after I got to know these strangers I realized that they were nice, friendly people. And the inside of them was often nicer than the outside. I started talking to my new friends and realized that there was no reason to be scared. After serving for a few months, I started to look forward to seeing the same people each week.
Take Cowboy. He always puts me in a good mood. When I see him, he always says, “Austin! How are you?” I’ve often heard him say that I am a really hard worker. This makes me feel really good inside because I know I’m making a difference in someone’s life.

When Someone Believes in You
When Marco was a boy, he tried everything to get his father’s love and attention. He worked hard to earn excellent marks; he tried to be obedient (顺从的), he chose inspiring friends and always tried to behave well.
Sensitive and shy, he always wore turtleneck shirts. He hid behind his hair, which he wore long around his face and ears. To make it worse, Marco was naturally shorter than the other kids. And because his good marks had allowed him to skip second grade — he was younger than everyone else. This added nothing to his already low self-confidence.
When Marco was eight his parents divorced, and Marco was sent to a boarding school. Six years later, he and his young sister Sandra moved in with their dad and his new wife in St-Léonard, a French Canadian and Italian neighbourhood on the east side of Montreal. Between his work and his new young wife, it felt to Marco that his father had little time for him and Sandra. Except for his demands around housework after school, there was no communication. It seemed to Marco the only time his dad ever spoke to him was to be demanding or critical. But his dad really did love him and wanted the best for him. It was his own insecurity that made him react to anything that might threaten his son’s future.
Marco sank further into his low self-respect and was overwhelmed with feeling unappreciated, inadequate, depressed and confused. He felt desperately alone and lonely. He began to fear coming home from school every day.
One day, his aunt called him. To Marco, this seemed like a miracle. Aunt Ginette usually only called once a year, on his birthday. She said she had just seen some young teenagers participate in a public speaking contest called Gala Personnalité sponsored by Club Optimiste — and she thought about him. She thought he should give it a try. She told him she firmly believed he could perform on stage like the other kids, since she had seen him do skits (小品) for the family at Christmas.

We were traveling home over the winter holidays by car and stopped to have supper. There was a big snow storm in the news but we were traveling south and the roads stayed clear for us for hours, so we figured we’ d beat the storm. By the time we finished eating, the temperatures had dropped to just below freezing but we weren’t paying attention.
We got back on the road. I was behind the wheel, and within less than five minutes we must have crossed a county line because the roadway suddenly became narrower and less well-marked. There was snow on the ground on either side of the road.
Suddenly there was freezing ice on the road and before I had a chance to slow down, I had slid (滑) over a long area of ice and the car started to fishtail. My family had already fallen asleep in the backseat. It was so frightening.
I stayed off the brakes (刹车) for several long moments, nervously judging the areas of woods on both sides of the road as the back of the car slid and slid from side to side. Then there was a small space on the left and I took the risk of gently tapping on the brakes.
The car left the roadway still going at a high rate of speed and headed for the trees on the other side of the space. There was a stump (树桩) and the car got hung up as it went over the stump, swung us around, and suddenly stopped in the opposite direction we’d been going. It was cold and snowy and we had a young child with us. We got out to see how we were going to get off the stump.

10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Rafael is my parents’ friend who owns a bakery with the yummiest (最美味的) treats imaginable. He happened to stop by when my friends Mareya and Daniel, my little sister Indi and I were drawing with chalk in front of my house. He said our drawings were cool, while trying not to step on them as he walked toward the door to find my dad. We expressed our thanks and continued to draw.
A little while later, when he came back out with my dad, Rafael said he had been thinking about our wonderful drawings, and that he’d really love our help. He was going to sell cookies, and the profits would go to an organization that worked to save the rainforests. When asked if he wanted us to help taste the cookies, Rafael laughed and said “Of course”. But he said he also needed some artwork for the bags. He wondered if we would be up for making some sketches (草图) on paper that he could consider for the label.
We said yes right away. I mean, who wouldn’t want to help the rainforests — and sample some of Rafael’s delicious cookies? Rafael had to leave for a meeting but promised to be back by four o’clock. “Don’t worry about making the pictures perfect,” he said as he left. “Just have fun drawing.”
After we read a little bit about the rainforests, my mom helped get us set up with art supplies and background music. And away we drew! Finally, about five minutes before four o’clock, we decided to stop and look at one another’s work. To our great surprise, Daniel made an incredible drawing. When asked why he never told us he could draw like that, Daniel just smiled. He said he was glad we liked it and that he thought all of ours were really awesome too.

1.One possible version:
I instructed Christina to stay close to me and hold my hand firmly. “Don’t move suddenly or make any loud noises,” I whispered to her. “We need to stay calm and slowly back away.” Christina nodded, her eyes wide with fear. The bear cub seemed to have no interest in us and continued playing on the rock. We slowly made our way back to the trial, making sure to keep an eye on the cub. Once we were a safe distance away, I let out a sign of relief. “Wow, did you see that?” Christina exclaimed, a smile returning to her face. “That bear cub was so cute!” “Yeah, but we need to remember that they’re still wild animals and can be dangerous,” I reminded her. “We should always keep a safe distance.”
Keeping a tight hold on her hand, we walked on along the trail marked on our map. Christina chattered away, telling me all about her favorite animals and what she wanted to be when she grew up. As we walked, I found myself starting to enjoy her company. Maybe this family vacation wasn’t such a bad idea after all. As we continued on the trial, I made a mental note to be more patient with Christina and try to bond with her more during our time together.

Together we sat in the kitchen, sometimes out in the open, talking and laughing happily. On sunny days, the four of us would hike or go camping in the open. Meanwhile, the two kids seemed to enjoy the company of each other, and things began to improve for them.
Of course, there are moments when we simply felt hopeless. Usually at this time, we would hug each other, saying encouraging words to each other. Pam managed to contact some doctors and experts on autism, and we shared experiences and our vision of the future, believing that things would be all right as long as we stayed positive. Luckily, with our common efforts, the two kids are improving significantly. And I begin to look forward to each day filled with hope.

4.One possible version:
“Why not do a search on the Internet?” suggested Jack. We acted quickly and surfed the Internet to figure out the relevant information about the bird, such as its species and habits. Following the given advice, we put some cotton at the bottom of the box to keep it warm and placed it near the fireplace. In order to recover its energy, we gave it some food and water. The bird looked a bit more comfortable, and soon it fell asleep. Having ensured the bird was in good condition, we felt relieved.
The next day, we were glad to see the bird was well enough. It was singing and bouncing around in the rescue box. Obviously, it had regained its energy! Realizing it was fully ready for freedom, we took the box outside, placed the bird in my palm and petted it softly with mixed feelings. I held the bird up and let it go. The bird was circling above us as if to express gratitude. Jack and I looked at each other with a broad smile, feeling that we were qualified volunteer wildlife rescuers now.

5. My wife needs a lot of support these days and our son stepped up to help. There were some repairs needed around the house that I had no time to do and he saw them and helped me to make them happen. Besides this, he helped to prepare food, to help his mother get comfortable when she had to move around. In general, he took from me a load I hadn’t fully realized I was carrying. I found in some cases that I was working under his directions because he was even more skilled than me sometimes.
My son left recently for his home and again I was in tears but it was different somehow. When he arrived I was crying because I was so happy to see him and so relieved to have someone I love and trust to help me take care of his mother. When he left, I shed tears of pride and joy that such a strong, intelligent and wonderful person is my son and he honors me by calling me “dad”.

One day, David burst through the main door excitedly. Unable to conceal his delight and thrill, he announced that the school would like him to play solo at the school musical concert. The whole family was extremely thrilled for him, for it was a perfect opportunity to realize his music dream. There was also a bit worry that he might suffer a blow in case of a failure, which threw us into a hint of uneasiness. But we had faith in him. The following days witnessed him repeatedly practicing the chosen music skillfully. Then came the big day when he would go onstage.
Tapping the ground with his walking stick. David entered the stage. With the widest smile on his face, he walked towards the grand piano located in the middle of the stage. I sat up with anticipation, heart filled with pride. His fingers flew on the keys as his music filled the air of the 500-seat concert hall. After the last note was played, the whole hall erupted into applause. David stood up and took a bow, smiling broadly as the spotlight shone brightly on him. He would always be an inspiration to me. Through him, I learned having an unflagging spirit could overcome challenges and David truly had that.

7. Then there’s Curtis. He’s a really big guy. People might be afraid of him at first sight because of his size. However, he is actually a little shy. I often offer to say hello first when we meet, and gradually he opens his mind, giving me a sincere “Hi” and talking with me about his recent life. Now he begins to communicate with more people and to my excitement, he even gets a great job offer.
All of these people make my day much better. When I don’t see one of them, I wonder if they are okay. The last two years have changed my life. I do this because it’s the right thing to do. When I serve people, I want them to know that someone cares about them and that they matter. Serving makes me happy, but even more importantly, it teaches me to love and respect others and that helps make the world a better place to live in.

Him? On stage? In a public speaking contest? Marco was very surprised at the news. Hardly could he imagine himself speaking in front of a big crowd. But Aunt Ginette was so confident. She seemed really serious and insisted that it was something he could do. She truly believed in him. Feeling her strong belief, Marco went against everything he had ever experienced, and agreed to enter the contest. Once determined, he spared no efforts to practice. He was taken by an energy he had never felt before. The hours and obstacles no longer counted.
Four months later, the big night arrived. His Aunt Ginette, his sister and even his father, were all in the audience. Marco was overwhelmed with butterflies filling his stomach. But when he stepped onto the stage and began to speak, he felt totally at home, totally at peace. He was funny, witty and acted extremely natural as he spoke. The audience loved him! To his shock and amazement, he WON! When he saw his father’s face, his eyes were glowing — he was so proud. He realized then that he believed in him, just like his Aunt Ginette.

Having learnt about the difficult situation, we knew we had to wait for help. Soon some more cars came. They had the same trouble as we had, but they took great risks to stop their cars behind us. The drivers got out of their cars, offering to help us get out of trouble. They walked around our car, trying to find a proper way to rescue it. At last, they decided to free the car by lifting it. We waited a while until enough men gathered to lift my car.
Then we discussed how to remove the danger caused by the ice. Someone suggested that we should clear up the ice, but this would take too much time and energy without tools. Eventually we decided to go to a small farm nearby and ask for help. The farmer was a warm-hearted man, and he was only too happy to help us. He came up with two ways: he could provide us with sand or salt to cover the ice. We ended up using sand because it was more environmentally friendly. Seeing other cars passing safely, we were delighted.

I liked my drawing, but after comparing it with Daniel’s masterpiece, I felt like the worst artist ever. I tried to tell myself that it was just for fun and it didn’t matter how good or bad my drawing was, but I couldn’t shake off the feeling of disappointment. Just then, Rafael walked in and noticed my downcast expression. He asked if everything was alright and I told him how I felt. Rafael smiled and asked, “Do you want to know the secret of my yummy cookies?” “What’s the secret?” I asked, expecting the answer. “It’s the fun and joy in the baking process. You know, the most important thing about drawing, likewise, is not how perfect it looks, but how it makes you feel. Does your drawing make you happy? If it does, then it’s a masterpiece.”
When I looked closely at everyone’s art, I could see what Rafael meant. Even though some of the drawings were not technically perfect, they all had a special quality that made them unique and beautiful in their own way. Mareya’s and Indi’s were bold and colorful, while mine was delicate and intricate. We all happily engaged in drawing and each drawing represented our own observation and imagination, which made them so special. I think Rafael’s words really captured the essence of what art is all about. It’s not about conforming to a certain set of rules or standards, but rather about expressing oneself in a way that brings joy and meaning to the drawer and those who view the work.
