Six “sacrificial pits (祭祀坑)”, dating back 3,200 to 4,000 years, were newly discovered in Sanxingdui Ruins site in Guanghan, Southwest China’s Sichuan province. Over 500 artifacts, including gold masks, bronze wares, ivories, jades, and textiles, were unearthed from the site.
Sanxingdui site, first found in 1929, is generally considered as one of the most important archaeological sites along the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. However, large-scale excavation on the site only began in 1986, when two pits ---- widely believed for sacrificial ceremonies ---- were accidentally discovered.
Investigation in the area around No.1 and No.2 pits was relaunched in October 2019, and No.3 pit was found in December 2019, according to Lei Yu, a researcher of Sichuan Provincial Cultural Relics and Archaeology Research Institute who heads the on going excavation. Thirty-four research universities and research institutes have cooperated in this project. He said the new discoveries will help to better understand many unexplained findings in 1986.
More excavation followed in March 2020, and five more pits were found last year. And detailed research began in October. Excavation capsules with hi-tech equipment were set up in the pits to better conserve the site.
Sanxingdui site covers an area of 12 square kilometers, and its core zone of an ancient city covers nearly 4 square kilometers. According to the National Cultural Heritage Administration, studies of Sanxingdui site will become a crucial project in an ongoing program Archaeology China, which tries to explain the origins of Chinese civilization and how diverse cultures communicate and come together.

Many people enjoy biscuits at teatime. But people with diabetes have to be careful about eating sweet food.
Diabetes is a metabolic(代谢的)disease. If a patient's blood sugar is not well controlled, serious problems can occur. A patient may experience dizziness and fatigue, but also have kidney failure, blindness and heart disease, according to Medical News Today.
But a new research may make it possible to “treat diabetes by eating biscuits”. Researchers from Peking University and East China Normal University successfully developed a new cell using synthetic(合成的)biology technology. Their study was published in Nature Chemical Biology in November.
In their research, diabetic mice implanted with the cells can increase insulin(胰岛素)levels and lower blood sugar as long as they eat specific amino acid(氨基酸)biscuits. It only takes 90 minutes for the mice to reduce their blood sugar, which amounts to the time after an insulin injection, Liu Tao, one of the authors, told Science and Technology Daily.
This kind of biscuit does not directly lower blood sugar levels, but is a “key” to insulin. The special amino acids in the biscuits help to start the insulin translation process. The end result is controlled blood sugar, according to Ye Haifeng, one of the authors.
“This unnatural amino acid is similar to the ingredients added in many health drinks and is very friendly to the human body, ” Liu told Science and Technology Daily. Maybe one day, people will need to take artificial amino acids before meals, or eat foods containing artificial amino acids suitable for diabetics, so they can control their blood sugar.
Although scientists in synthetic biology have paved the way for possible future treatments, their findings won't be ready for patients anytime soon. “Synthetic biology is still an early-stage discipline compared to the traditional diabetes therapeutic development timeline, with most technologies currently in the preclinical stages in the lab, ” Ira Pastor, CEO of the life sciences company Bioquark, told US News.
28. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Diseases that can affect blood sugar.
B. Blood sugar's effects on the metabolic system.
C. Severe problems caused by diabetes.
D. A kind of metabolic disease that is called diabetes.
29. How did the blood sugar of the diabetic mice decrease in the study?
A. Scientists gave them biscuits with less sugar.
B. The amino acid biscuits they ate contained insulin.
C. Scientists implanted cells that can directly lower blood sugar.
D. The implanted cells and the specific amino acids increased insulin.
30. Which of the following would Ira Pastor agree with?
A. Synthetic biology is developing quickly at present.
B. Synthetic biology proves the most effective solution to diabetes.
C. There remains a long way for this therapy to enter hospitals.
D. Many traditional therapeutic diabetes technologies are still in the lab.
31. The passage is most likely to be taken from a ______.
A. science report B. health column C. research paper D. biology essay
D
Geothermal(地热的) power generation is one of our most stable renewable energy resources. Heat generated below the Earth's surface can provide an almost unlimited supply to power and heat homes. And while geothermal electricity only accounts for around one percent of global generation, that is set to at least triple by 2050.
The Geysers in California is the world's largest geothermal electricity complex. It produces enough electricity from its 18 power plants for 725,000 homes, totaling 20 percent of the state's renewable energy. Superheated “dry steam” is channeled from a large sandstone reservoir heated by a large magma chamber(岩浆房)more than four miles beneath the surface.
Heat is captured from its passage through the rock and the heated water converts into electricity. Cooled water is then recycled and pumped back to gather more heat. EGS(enhanced geothermal systems) technologies will open up many more sites for geothermal energy. “You can effectively put a power plant anywhere," said Will Pettit, director of the Geothermal Resources Council. “All you have to do is drill(钻孔) deep enough and you will find hot rock. ”
Most geothermal plants actually use a flash steam technique, where hot water(at 360F or 180C) is drawn up, passed into lower pressure tanks and 'flashed' into steam to .power a turbine(涡轮机).Binary cycle(双元循环)plants are the growth technology because they can operate at lower water temperatures and more diverse geographical locations. They use moderately hot water to heat a secondary fluid with a lower boiling point-as low as 135F-to drive turbines.
Geothermal plants already emit 11 times less carbon dioxide per unit of electricity than the average US coal power plant. They can also operate 24 hours a day to provide a solid base load for homes and businesses.
There are drawbacks too. Seismic activity around drilling wells is a factor. High investment costs are another. But the US government is backing the sector with multi-million dollar funds to push forward advanced EGS research. Geothermal energy is set to play a big part in the low-carbon electricity future.
32. What do Will Pettit's words suggest in paragraph 3?
A. It takes great effort to develop geothermal power.
B. More geothermal energy can be found with advanced technology.
C. Geothermal power plants can be set up in certain places.
D. Geothermal power development is money-consuming.
33. What can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A. Power plants are not affected by water.
B. Hot water is used to power a turbine directly.
C. A flash steam technique is a must in geothermal plants.
D. Binary cycle plants are less restricted to locations.
34. What is the main idea of the article?
A. Traditional power has been replaced by geothermal power in America.
B. Geothermal power is likely to be the best chance to sustainable power.
C. Businesses are competing to gain an advantage in geothermal power.
D. EGS technologies have come into widespread application around the world.
35. What is the writer's attitude towards geothermal power?
A. Optimistic. B. Pessimistic. C. Indifferent. D. Concerned.

Bryan raced into the kitchen. “Dad! Look!” he called. The screen door bounced closed behind him. “I found the best pet at the creek(小溪)!”
He held up a goggle-eyed frog for his dad to see. “I named him Hoppy.”
Dad bent down for a closer look. “Hello there, handsome,” he said.
Bryan giggled. “Do you think Hoppy will like it here?” he asked.
Dad tousled Bryan’s hair. “Why don’t you keep him for a while, and then we’ll see how he’s doing?”
“OK,” said Bryan. “Come on, Hoppy. I’ll show you my room.”
Bryan searched his closet for a shoebox. Using a pen, he poked air holes in the top. On the sides of the box he wrote H-O-P-P-Y.
“Welcome to your new home,” he said. “In you go, Hoppy.”
“Lunch is ready!” Dad called from the kitchen.
Bryan ate his peanut butter sandwich, saving little pieces for Hoppy.
“Are you hungry?” Bryan asked. He lifted his frog out of the box and put the sandwich bits on the floor in front of him. “Eat up, Hoppy,” he said.
Bryan watched...Hoppy didn’t eat.
Bryan waited...Hoppy just sat and stared.
“Maybe he’s not used to sandwiches,” said Bryan.
“I’m sure you’re right,” agreed Dad.
“Let’s play outside, Hoppy,” Bryan said. “Maybe you need exercise.”
In the sandbox, Bryan built an obstacle course. He made hills and tunnels with the sand. He used toys to make hurdles and walls.
Bryan explained the course to Hoppy. “First you jump here to there — then up and over — then one giant hop — TAA-DAAH! — to the finish line.”
He put Hoppy on the starting line. “Ready? Get set…GO!”
Bryan cheered…Hoppy didn’t move. Bryan cheered and clapped…Hoppy sat and stared.
Bryan put Hoppy back in the box and carried him into the house.

读后续写答案:“I’m going to make him a cosy bed,” he told his dad. Bryan went to the closet where the old newspapers were kept. He tore strips of paper and scrunched them into the box. He put Hoppy on his new bed. “Are you comfortable?” he whispered through the air holes. “I’ll tell you a story to help you sleep.” When the story was finished, he lifted the lid carefully, just a tiny bit, and peeked inside. Hoppy was still awake. “Can’t you sleep?” Bryan whispered. Hoppy just sat...and stared.
“How are you and Hoppy getting along?” Dad asked anxiously; passing by in the hall. “Hoppy doesn’t want to eat peanut butter,” Bryan said. “He doesn’t want to sleep in a box, either.” Bryan jumped to his feet. “Come on, Hoppy,” he said, “I know what you want.” A little later, Bryan raced into the house looking for his dad. “What’s the hurry? And where’s Hoppy?” said Dad. “I took him back to the creek,” Bryan said. “He was sure glad to be home!”
