I woke up with drool (口水) on my pillow this morning. I wouldn‘t have minded except it wasn‘t mine. The alarm clock rang, and I reached over to turn it off. As I laid my face back down on the pillow, I felt the wet, slimy drool on my pillow case. I opened my eyes and saw a smiling, panting (喘气的), furry face looking down at me. I tried to get up, but she was too fast. My face was suddenly covered in kisses with one going straight up my nose and another right in my ear. I laughed, reached out, picked her up and held her away from my wet face. It was just another morning in a life with dogs.
Why do we welcome them into our homes and our hearts? We know that we are most likely going to outlive
them and have our hearts broken when they age quickly and die after ten to fifteen years. We know that there will be vet bills, flea baths and enough fur to make a vacuum cleaner cry. We know that our ears will ring from the barking, that we will be picking up poop (大便) every single day and that we will never get to finish a full sandwich again.
Yet, when we are feeling down or blue, there will always be a soft head on our lap needing to be petted.
When we get home after a long day‘s work, there will be a happy face at the door waiting for us. Our lives will be full of balls to throw, bellies to scratch, and love and loyalty that will warm our hearts and cheer us up.
For thousands of years, dogs have been our best friends. They remain one of the greatest gifts life has ever
given us. Even if they can‘t love us for the rest of our lives, they will always love us for all of theirs.
    24. How does the author probably feel about his dog every morning?
    A. Glad. B. Impatient.
    C. Horrible. D. angry.

    B. show how dogs can be a burden.
    C. give examples of dogs‘ bad behavior.
    D. describe how dogs can be charming.
    26. What does the last sentence of this article mean?
    A. Life is never perfect.
    B. Dogs are beneficial.
    C. Dogs are devoted to their owners.
D Dogs‘ owners live longer than them.
    27. The writer wrote this article mainly to ________.
    A. show the impact of a dog‘s company
    B. show the importance of raising dogs
    C. show that having a dog is worth all the trouble
    D. show the advantages and disadvantages of raising dogs C
To the delight of bookworms, anyone who has ever told you burying your head in a book means you‘re being
unsociable will have to cat their wards. A new study suggests those who regularly read, especially fiction, are actually nicer and more empathetic(善解人意)people.
    第4 页/共10 页
The study, carried out by Kingston University London, and presented at the British Psychological Society conference in Brighton, UK, last week, also found that those who just watched television seemed to be less kind and understanding of other people.
For the study, the researchers questioned 123 people on their preferences for books.TV shows, and plays.
They were also quizzed about the type of entertainment they preferred from comedy or romance to drama. Then they were tested on their interpersonal skills. The researchers asked them about their behavior towards others, whether they understood and respected others‘ points of view, and whether they actively belted other people.
Drawing on these responses sheet, the researchers found some mind-boggling results. They discovered that
those who read more showed greater positive social behavior and a better ability to empathize with others, while those who preferred watching TV didn‘t show the same ability to empathize and were more likely to show unsociable behavior.
They also found the forms of fiction people preferred were linked to their interpersonal skills and behavior.
Those who preferred fiction displayed the most positive social skills. Romance and drama lovers showed the ability to see others‘ points of view, while comedy fans were particularly. Able to relate to others the most.
The researchers concluded that those who read fiction regularly are more well-adapted to see things from
other people‘s points of view, which makes them better at understanding people. However, they do acknowledge that their study didn‘t conclude if the effects are causal-does reading make you nicer and more empathetic, or do more empathetic people tend to read fiction? Even so. picking up a book can‘t hurt, and might just make the world a nicer place.
28.How did the researchers conduct the research?
A.By making questionnaire surveys. B.By comparing experiment statistics.
C.By observing participants‘ behaviors. D.By referring to previous study reports.
29.What does the underlined word ―mind-boggling‖ mean in paragraph 4?
    A.Embarrassing. B.Amazing. C.Rewarding. D.Disappointing.
30.What can improve people‘s empathetic abilities the most according to the study?
A.Reading fiction and comedy. B.Enjoying romance and drama.
C.Taking part in social activities. D.Watching plays on social media.
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.All people support the research result. B.Further study is needed on this subject.
C.The nicer and kinder people like reading. D.Reading can help people make more friends.

For ten years I worked for Epps without reward. Ten years of my endless labor helped him to get richer. Ten years I had to talk to him with eyes looking down and an uncovered head---in the way of the slave. And I got nothing back from him except undeserved abuse and whippings. He was a man who had no sense of kindness or justice. He only had a rough energy, connected to an uneducated mind and a greedy nature. He was known as a ―slave-breaker‖ , famous for his ability to destroy the spirit of his slaves. And he was proud of this reputation. He didn‘t think of the black man as a human being, but as a piece of living property, like a mule or a dog.

a prize to everyone who gets 100 percent. I‘ve studied the list all week. The words are hard, but I‘m ready.‖
Annie studied the spelling of each word again as Mom drove her to school. Finally, it was time for the test. I mpatient, Mrs. Page began. Annie wrote down the word correctly and quickly.
Word number two: weird, Mrs. Page said.
Easy, Annie thought. She quickly wrote it on her paper.
Twenty-three words later, Mrs. Page collected the test papers. I‘ll mark your papers during lunch,‖ she told the class. After lunch Mrs. Page said, Several of you earned a prize today for perfect test scores. Tracy, Jonas, Olivia, and Annie all scored 100 percent on the test!
Annie smiled as she walked to the front of the room. Mrs. Page gave each of the four students a nice pencil.
Annie‘s was silver, pink, and blue — her favorite colors. She held the beautiful pencil high while the class clapped. This is one of my best days ever, Annie thought as she sat down.
Mrs. Page handed back the test paper and Annie read the words over, proud of the hard words she had spelled.
Suddenly she stopped at the word weird‖ . It didn‘t look right. Annie pulled out the study list and made a comparison. W-i-e-r-d,‖ she whispered. She had spelled it wrong.
What should I do?‖ Annie wondered. I want my classmates to think I‘m a great speller. If I tell Mrs. Page
I‘ll have to give back my prize, or I will become an example for telling a lie.
Annie stared at the test paper with the big red 100% written at the top. Then she thought of a lesson Dad taught her when she was very young, We should always be honest.
