Although the northern right whale (Eubalena glacialis) has remained the most endangered of the world's whale species, we removed it from our Top 10 Endangered Species List a few years back. Because of effective conservation regulations, the number of right whales that travel the Atlantic coasts of Canada and the US had rebounded(回升)from an all-time low of 350 to at least 450 by the middle of the 21st century's second decade.

However, the tide of good news for the species now seems to have been reversed, due, apparently, to global climate change. Warming ocean waters, particularly in the Gulf of Marine where the whales often feed, have caused the tiny creatures right whales feed on, to decrease and become more difficult for the whales to find. As a result, right whale reproduction has fallen to an alarmingly low level, deaths due to all causes have increased, with 16 of the huge cetaceans(鲸鱼)found dead in 2017 aloneResearchers are finding evidence of increased levels of stress on the animals. So alarming is the situation that we've decided to put the northern right whale right back at the top of our list.

The right whale got its name because 19th century whalers considered it “right” whale to kill, as it was not only full of valuable whale oil, but it also floated after it was dead, which made it easy to handle and process. As a result, it was driven to near extinction. Though now protected by law, right whales continue to suffer losses due to commercial fishing and now, increasingly, as a result of global climate changedue to the lack of the tiny crustaceans(甲壳类)on which they feed.

    24. Why was the northern right whale taken off the Top 10 Endangered Species List for a time?

    A. Only a few people focused on it.

    B. Many of them settled along Atlantic coasts.

    C. It wasn't considered as endangered.

    D. Its population was on the rise again.

    25. What does the underlined word "reversed" in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A. Protected.       B. Opposite.       C. Similar.      D. Accepted.

    26. Why does the author mention 16 dead cetaceans in paragraph 2?

    A. To suggest taking measures to protect cetaceans.

    B. To show oceans got seriously polluted in 2017.

    C. To stress cetaceans need to be taken seriously.

    D. To warn that cetaceans are on the way to dying out.

    27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

    A. The decrease of right whales is related to humans.

    B. Commercial fishing has been forbidden for years.

    C. The tiny crustaceans do harm to the right whales.

    D. Climate change results from the number of whales.

    C

Barbecued meat is an important part of people’s nightlife. Shown on June 20, the series has had over 25 million clicks on the video site bilibili.com. Some viewers compare Chinese Barbecue to Midnight Diner, a Japanese TV series telling stories from late night informal Japanese bars. “We share the same topic -- night food” Chinese Barbecues director Chen Yingjie said. The barbecue, regarded as the most ordinary and common night street snacks, is different from home-made food by mothers. The barbecue is where you go to become connected to people in society. And unlike official business lunches, the barbecue lets people relax with old friends and new friends, leaving a lasting impression of friendship.

The world, as a whole, holds deep rooted good feelings toward the barbecue, either for the taste or the warmth produced by fire. “What we should do is to present the Chinese barbecue just the way it is because with its special ingredients(食材), ways of cooking, and more importantly, the special environment and people, the world will recognise it and might fall in love with it just as we do”, said Chen.

    28. What do we know about Chinese Barbecue?

    A. It shows the colorful nightlife in large cities of China.

    B. It is thought highly of by most of the foreign tourists.

    C. It has been becoming very popular on the Internet.

    D. It mainly talks about the most famous Chinese food.

    29. In which way was Chinese Barbecue different from Midnight Diner?

    A. It showed the eating habits. B. It focused more on the diners.

    C. It showed more kinds of food. D. It was less popular than Midnight Diner.

    30. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A. The importance of the barbecue to family.

    B. The influence of the barbecue on people’s lifestyle.

    C. The influence of the barbecue on people’s manners.

    D. The role of the barbecue in people’s relationship.

    31. Why did Chen Yingjie choose the barbecue as the topic of the series?

    A. To introduce the history of the barbecue.

    B. To help the world understand China.

    Dear Eric,

Im sorry to hear that you are struggling with obesity. As a common problem among people these days, obesity does raise some health concerns. However, aided by a healthy diet and regular exercise, you are sure to find yourself in a better condition with improved health.

First of all, I would advise against eating little or no food to lose weight. Although it might work in the short term, its risks far outweigh the benefits. Instead, try a healthy diet by eating regular meals, more vegetables and fruit and less junk food, Besides, using a smaller plate and eating slowly can prevent overeating. In the meantime, exercising can help you lose weight while improving your mood and reduce other health risks. You dont have to do any high-intensity activities, as simple exercises like walking or jogging can also do the trick, as long as you stick to it.

Remember, the key to succeeding in losing weight is perseverance. Looking forward to hearing good news from you.

                                                                    Yours sincerely,

A few years later, he graduated with a degree in prosthetics and worked in a hospital. Every day, at the end of his shift, he would devote time to designing special prosthetic legs for his mon. He planned to give his mother a surprise on her 40th birthday. After an impatient wait, Carol’s birthday arrived, and Charlie put his plan into action. “Darling, where ae you taking me?” Carol was puzzled when he helped her get ready and gently put her in the wheelchair. “Mom, you’ll know in a while.” Carol was confused and happy at the same time.

Charlie took his mother to the hospital and showed her the prosthetic legs he’d designed. “Happy birthday, Mon!” he said. Carol burst into tears and hugged her son. For the next few weeks, Charlie trained Carol to use the prosthetic legs. “Mom, you can do it. Just forget you used a wheelchair … Stretch your hands sideways and take your first step. You can do this … walk toward me …come this way.” Carol took her first step with her prosthetics and was excited to see her feet move on the ground.

M: At 8: 00. But we have to be at school by 7: 45.

W: OK. When will we get to Central Park?

    M: Well, it’s about an hour’s drive, so we’ll be there at around 9: 00. We’ll have lunch at 11: 30.

W: And when will we have to come back?

M: We will leave Central Park at 2 p. m. for Sunny Beach on the way back. We’ll get back to school at around 6 p. m.

W: Sounds like an interesting day. See you tomorrow morning.

    Test Eight

W: Would you like to go to the Grand Theater with me? Here are two tickets for an opera there.

M: That’s great. Have you ever been to the Grand Theater before?

W: No, but I heard it’s a famous and beautiful theater.

M: Is it true that the opera is sung in a foreign language?

W: Yes, usually in Italian or French.

M: Not good for me. As you know, I can only speak English and a little German besides my mother tongue. I can hardly speak Italian or French.

W: It doesn’t matter. The actors also tell the story with their moves.

M: Sounds good, but I’m still afraid I can’t understand.

W: Take it easy. Music is a universal language.

M: Yes, the music is supposed to be beautiful.

    Test Nine

    W: Hello, is that Frank?

    M: Yes.

W: Frank, you’ve won $10, 000! To get your prize, you need to give me your credit card number and your address. We will then send you the money right away.

M: Why would I need to give you my credit card number? That doesn’t make sense.

W: We need the number so we can put you in our computer system. Then we’re able to send you the check.

M: I’m not sure about this. I’d rather just give you my address.

W: I’m sorry, sir, but we also have to have your credit card number in order to send you the money.

M: Okay, then I’m going to hang up. Have a nice day.

W: Sir, wait! This is a real contest. We’d like to send you the prize money.

M: I’ve heard about this kind of contest before. This is not true.

W: Sir, I’m not trying to be rude. I’m just telling you the truth.

M: I’m hanging up now. Goodbye.

    Test Ten

W: Because of COVID 19, many new methods are being formed for social communication. However, there is one older method that is becoming popular again. It is called the drive-in movie theater, or more commonly, a drive-in. Drive-ins began around 1915, the first being in New Mexico. The idea soon spread around the country. Six years later, Texas opened their first drive-in and New Jersey opened their first in1933. Drive-ins are a way to watch movies without being packed into a movie theater. Drive-ins play a movie on a large screen, usually in a parking lot or an open space. Being able to sit in your own car and watch a movie can be a more pleasant experience for most people. Unfortunately, most drive-ins failed in the past 20 years. Because more people moved into the cities, the suburban drive-in didn’t have a reliable customer base. Cities don’t have open spaces big enough to operate these theaters, either. Another reason is that the high oil prices also make people drive less. Before COVID 19, drive-ins consisted of only 1. 5%of all movie screens in the USA, which is a huge drop from when they made up over 25% during their peak. Currently, drive-ins are making their return. Now with better technology, the movie picture will be much better than when drive-ins were at their most popular time. People feel safer about sitting in their own cars while watching, rather than sitting in a theater.
