Searching the OED
How to use the quick search
The quick search bar can be found on the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) homepage and at the top of every entry page, and finds main dictionary entries, such as alphabet, break, xylophone. It also finds phrases and compounds listed within main entries, such as to look up or alphabet book, and different forms of spellings such as dictionaries.
Wildcard searches
A wildcard is a symbol which stands for any character. The question mark?represents the occurrence of any one single character, and the asterisk * represents the occurrence of any number of characters (or no character at all) . Wildcards are useful if you do not know how to spell a word, or if you want to find several terms beginning with the same root.
How to use the advanced search
An advanced search is a full search of the entire dictionary text which is for readers who have logged in or subscribed to the dictionary. Advanced search can be especially useful for very specific searches. You can use the search area functionality to search by each section of an entry. You can also use filters to narrow your search to match certain criteria.
Browsing by categories
Categories allow you to explore the dictionary through groupings of words in, for instance, a subject or from a particular origin. If you want to find all the Carribbean borrowings in English, or find the first word related to espionage to enter the dictionary, this is the function for you.
Further explore your search by using the options that appear on the right-hand side of the results page.
21.What will you use if you are not sure of the spelling of a word?
A.The quick search. B.Wildcard searches.
C.The advanced search. D.Browsing by categories.
22.What’s the requirement of using the advanced search?
A.Registering for the dictionary. B.Matching certain criteria.
C.Searching with specific words. D.Searching with purpose.
23.Where is this text probably taken from?

I am Ewald. I' m not someone who has many secrets, because I' m a terrible liar. But there is one huge secret that I kept for years-I failed my driving test. I had never failed a test before, and had never even come close. Driving made me anxious, but my parents told me I had to. They signed me up for driving lessons. I had gotten a perfect score for my written permit exam, but getting behind the wheel was a different story.
But when October 30th rolled around, my pride set in. I wanted to be like everyone else at my school, showing off the brand new license they'd gotten. Looking back on that special day, I can't remember if I was nervous. What I do remember is starting the test, pausing at a stop sign after a few seconds, and being asked by the instructor to pull over. I had received an auto-fail since my pause was indeed a pause and not a real stop. I wasn't upset that I was leaving without a license, but I was scared everyone would know that I had failed. So when I got to class, I told everyone I didn't want to take the test on my birthday.
One Friday a month later, I went to the test spot again and passed. Later that night I drove for the first time by myself, which brought to me an amazing feeling I've never experienced-but sill, I couldn't imagine ever telling anyone the truth. So I didn't. It wasn't until midway through college that I came clean. It turned out plenty of my college friends had failed too! And I gathered enough courage to speak the fact out. Yes, I had also failed.
Now I realize failure and imperfection are two things everyone has to experience, without which one couldn't make a true man.
24.What can we learn about Ewald?
A.He relied heavily on his parents.
B.He was a slow learner of driving.
C.He was afraid of taking exams.
D.He was bored with telling lies.
25.Why did the instructor ask Ewald to pull over?
A.To give him a second chance.
B.To check his parking skills.
C.To put an end to his test.
D.To show him a better way of driving.
26.What made Ewald feel extremely worried after his first attempt?
A.Losing face before his classmates.
B.Missing his birthday celebration.
C.Making his parents disappointed.
D.Failing to get a driving license.
27.What did Ewald learn from his own experience?
A.Honesty is the best policy.
B.Truth stands the test of time.
C.Failure is a way to grow up.
D.Imperfection is another form of perfection.

For those of us who attempt to keep up with the fashion world to ensure our cupboards stay fresh, the real skeletons(骷髅) in our cupboards are those pieces we bought and only wore once or twice --- mostly from following each season’s new trends.
With fast fashion brands like Forever 21, H&M and Zara’s constant output of new trendy clothing at low prices, it’s easy to fall into the trap of buying clothes regardless of whether you really need them. But unnecessary purchasing, and the mass production of clothing, aren’t just hard on our wallets --- they are hard on the environment.
One of the first steps in getting unwanted clothes out of your cupboard is to sell or consign(寄送)them. But because popular resale shops like Buffalo Exchange and Crossroads don’t accept fast fashion brands because they don’t profit enough from them, people often turn to throwing their old clothing in the dustbins.
Many consumers don’t realize that clothing and textiles(纺织品)are recyclable or how to recycle them. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States generated 16.22 million tons of waste textiles in 2017 and recycled only 2.62 million tons. Ten and a half million tons of textiles were finally buried under the ground that year.
Vetements, a Parisian fashion brand worn by celebrities like Kanye West and Rihanna, aimed to bring awareness to the problem of fast fashion brands and clothing waste with a recent window display at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. The window contained a giant pile of clothes. The pile, which grew daily, was made up of old clothes donated by Saks employees and out-of-season items from the store.
On Aug.10, the clothing from the display was donated to RewearAble, a Long Island recycling program that collects old clothes and textiles, and prepares them for resale or repurposes the textiles.
28.What keeps customers coming back to fast fashion brands like Forever 21, H&M and Zara?
A.Good shopping environment.
B.Discounts and promotional activities.
C.Warm and thoughtful service of the salesmen.
D.Low prices and a continuous supply of new looks.
29.The author mentions data in paragraph 4 in order to show that ________.
A.many consumers are aware of how to recycle textiles.
B.the United States are capable of producing tons of fashionable textiles.
C.fast fashion is hard on the environment.
D.it is an effective way to deal with waste textiles by burying them under the ground.
30.What can be learned about the window display created by Vetements?
A.It can help the environment.
B.It does good to people’s health.
C.It can help change people’s lives.
D.It will take the lead in the latest fashion.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.How to Stop Buying Unnecessary Clothes
B.Fast Fashion Brands Spread Around the World
C.The Advantages and Disadvantages of Fast Fashion
D.Fast Fashion Can Kill Your Wallet and the Environment

Have you ever wondered what wild animals do when no one is watching?
Low cost, dependable and small modern cameras offered a big help. Cameras placed in hard-to-reach places have shot everything from small desert cats to larger snow-lowing cats in the northern Rocky Mountains. Scientists have been able to document the “private” moments of wildlife with leading technology.
Grant Harris is a government biologist with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In his words, “there’s no doubt that these wild cameras are important tools to learn new information on wildlife.” Harris said some images help scientists see the influences of climate (气候) change.
Researchers with the Wyoming Migration Initiative, or WMI, are among those using wild cameras along with global positioning systems, or GPS. But WMI director Matthew Kauffman says as those devices (设备) are limited (有限的), so is the amount of information they can gather. However, cameras can be left in very wild areas for days, weeks or even months. They can provide information on how many animals are moving over a given period of time.
Putting those cameras in place requires careful planning. Wild video can show details about animal behavior. However, wild cameras have their problems too. Animals such as wolverines and bears sometimes attack (袭击) them. Scientists do not know if the attacks are the result of anger or interest. Also, the devices have become popular tools to help hunters look for animals. Some people argue that it is unfair to use the cameras that way.
Even with such problems, wild cameras are clearly an important scientific tool in researching wild animals.
32.What does the underlined word “document” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Remind. B.Enrich. C.Produce. D.Record.
33.Which is a disadvantage of wild cameras?
A.They cannot be left in the wild over a long period.
B.They cannot be placed in hard-to-reach areas.
C.They provide limited information.
D.They might be stolen by people.
34.Why do some people argue against using wild cameras?
A.It is difficult to fix the cameras.
B.It helps hunters find animals easily.
C.It is hard to achieve careful planning.
D.It makes animals interested in the cameras.
35.What is the author’s attitude towards wild cameras?
A.Doubtful. B.Supporting. C.Uncertain. D.Uninterested.

It was the first week of Mia's middle school. The bell's ringing brought her out of her daydreaming. She nervously gathered her books, preparing to reach another classroom for the next new class.
Mia followed the other kids and rushed into the hallway. Others walked in groups, chatted, and laughed, using the break to socialize. Mia, instead, walked alone along the wall of the hallway, with her head down. She was a shy girl, afraid to speak in front of other kids, and didn't think others would like her.
Mia finally sat in Mr. Johnson's Language Arts class nervously. “Welcome to Language Arts,” said Mr. Johnson. He told jokes as he talked about English. Mia forgot to daydream and laughed along with the rest of the class. “We'll have some fun with language,” he said. “Just wait and see.”
Fun was far beyond what Mia desired. She just wanted to be like other kids—running with friends in the hallway, laughing and joking between classes. Reminded of her pimply(长粉刺的)face, she felt hopeless and disappointed.
“Take out a piece of paper,” the teacher continued, when pointing at words on the blackboard. “Write for the next thirty minutes on this topic.” Mia began writing crazily as idea after idea fought for recognition in her head. The final result was a short story about a beautiful beach house. As she wrote, she could smell the salty air, hear the crashing waves and feel the pull of the sand beneath her feet. For just a moment, she forgot where she was. She was lost in the story.
“OK, pass your papers forward,” said the teacher. “Let's see what we have.” For the rest of the class time, the teacher read each individual work aloud. Mia originally thought it would be awkward. However, she was gradually attracted by the excitement in the teacher's voice. “He's actually enjoying this,” she thought. When the class would be soon over, there were still fifteen students' papers not read, including Mia's paper. Then, Mr. Johnson announced his decision, asking these students to read their work themselves in front of the class next class.

18.C 19.A 20.C
M: If you are like most students, you probably read both at home, outside your home and perhaps somewhere on your school yard. Your reading environment can have a great effect on your understanding and study, so giving some thought to how you can create or choose the right reading environments is very important and good for your study. When you are at home, you can usually create effective conditions for reading. You might want to choose a particular place — a desk or table, for example — where you always read. What is the most important is to make sure the place you choose is bright and quiet. Choose a chair that requires you to sit straight. Reading in a chair that’s too soft and comfortable is likely to make you sleepy! Keep your reading tools and a dictionary close at hand. Before you sit down, try to reduce all possible interruptions. Turn off your phone, the television Tell your family members or roommates that you will be busy for a while. If necessary, put a “Do not disturb” sign on your door! The more interruptions you must deal with while you read, the harder it will be to keep your attention on the task at hand.

During the competition, I followed your advice on how to behave and how to keep a good state, which led to my success. I’m grateful for your help. Without your help, I couldn’t have won such a prize. A week later, the bell rang and the Language Arts class began again. Mia was nervous with her head down. After other students finished reading the papers one by one, finally, it was Mia's turn. Frozen with fear, Mia stood in front of the class, with her hands holding her paper, shaking. Seeing it, Mr. Johnson told a funny joke, which made all laugh. Feeling more relaxed, Mia began reading. She was so focused that she felt she was alone. She didn't notice that her story soon attracted all her classmates who sat up straight, without any chatting. They were lost in her fantastic story.
After Mia finished her reading, the clapping from her classmates continued for a long time. Mia was shocked. When she raised her head, she found everyone staring at her excitedly. Mia finally smiled. She found everyone in the class responded to her story positively. After that class, Mia slowly lifted her head while walking. Later. she kept writing. And she began speaking in front of people and enjoyed it. A braver and more confident girl appeared. And she was grateful to Mr. Johnson who believed in every student.
