第二部分阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Deciduous forests(落叶林) are home to many wild animals. The development and
expansion of human presence in the forests has caused many of their native species to become
endangered.
Giant Panda
The giant panda, one of the most recognizable endangered species, is a large, docile
species of bear native to the deciduous forest of eastern China Myanmar and Vietnam because
of its limited diet--the panda’s main source of food is bamboo--the species is limited in its
habitat to areas where bamboo is available. Now the species only can be found today in
20small patches of forest at the western edge of its historic range.
Gray and red wolves
The gray wolf, which once ranged from the East Coast of America to the west, and south
to Mexico, now has a population of only 5,000 in the lower 48 states, mostly in the Rocky
Mountains. The smaller red wolf, native to the southeastern United States, was declared
extinct in the wild in 1980, though conservation efforts have reintroduced small captive
populations to the wild in California.
Red-Crowned crane
The red -crowned crane is native to Japan, Korea and eastern China. Agricultural
expansion and deforestation in these areas have removed a great deal of the marshes and
forests that are the crane’s primary habitats. For a time, the crane was thought to have
completely disappeared from Japan, but the recent discovery of cranes in Japanese marshlands
has restarted conservation efforts. Today, around 2,500 cranes live in the wild, including 1,000
in Japan.
European Mink
Native to Europe, the European mink ranges from France in the west to Finland in the
north, Russia in the cast and the Balkans in the south. Destruction of the mink habitat and use
of the species for fur have caused dramatic drops in the species’ population, which has been
reduced by 85 percent since the mid-19th century.
21.What has caused the wild animals to become endangered?
A.Global warming.
B.International trade.
C.Environmental pollution.
D.The invasion of mankind.
22.Which is mentioned as the reason for the decline of European minks?
A.The loss of their natural food.
C.Drought and forest fire.
B.The hunting of human beings.
D.Excessive deforestation.
23.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To call for more efforts to protect forests.
C.To introduce some endangered species.
B.To study the living habits of wild animals.
D.To find ways to protect wild animals.

B
At an age where many of his contemporaries are winding down, Jo Schoonbroodt is
somehow speeding up. On Sunday, the 71-year-old from the Netherlands, ran a marathon in
2hr 54min 19sec to become the fastest septuagenarian (70-90年龄组) in history.
A few days later, when the Times catches up with him, his achievement is still sinking in.
“I only started jogging at 36 because my doctor told me I had high cholesterol (胆固醇),” he
says. “But last year I ran 7,242 kilometres, which is more than double what I did in my car.”
But the secrets of his success might surprise you。 “Most runners train too hard. I do a
lot of my training with groups who run very slowly. And then I build on these basics with
some faster interval training.”
Schoonbroodt often runs at 9-or 10-minute mile pace, far slower than the 6.38min / mile
he ran for 26.2 miles to set his world record, but he says the crucial thing is that he listens to
his body. “A lot of people follow a training plan or coach and push on even when their body is
saying: ‘No, this is not a good day to do it.’ But if you go out the door and just do what you
feel, it’s easier to keep running and stay injury-free.”
Being a late bloomer (大器晚成), he believes, has actually helped him because his ego
(自我意识) never had to worry about chasing faster times of his youth. “Because I started so
late, I missed my best years. But that’s no problem. Everything is still new to me.”
Schoonbroodt, meanwhile, has no plans to put his feet up. “My next marathon is in two
and a half weeks, on an old Roman road built 2,000 years ago,” he says, the excitement
obvious. It will be his third in 2023. And with that he is off. After all, the quest (追求) for
another sub-three-hour marathon waits for no man. Not even one who is 71.
24.What message does Schoonbrodt’s story carry?
A.It is never too late to run.
C.Time waits for no man.
B.More haste, less speed.
D.An earlier bird catches the worm.
25.What is the secret behind Schoonbrodt’s success?
A.He competed with slower runners.
B.He made full use of the intervals.
C.He trained in line with his condition. D.He ran faster in the races than in trainings.
26.Why is being a late bloomer helpful to Schoonbrodt?
A.He can draw lessons from other runners.
B.He has a strong desire to make up for the lost time.
C.He can equip himself with new running skills.
D.He has no youthful success to think back to.
27.How does Schoonbrodt talk about his next marathon?
A.He is unsure of winning it.
C.He has no plan to enter for it.
B.He is eager to participate in it.
D.He will not run it in three hours.

Officials in New York City are using technology to cut down on noise on city streets.
Cameras equipped with radar (雷达) sound collectors identify loud vehicles in an effort to
catch drivers violating (违反) noise rules. New York officials say at least 71 people have
received tines for operating cars or trucks that make too much noise. The city’s Department of
Environmental Protection now has plans to expand the use of technology to enforce (强制执
行) noise rules.
City Council member Erik Bottcher told the Associated Press. (AP) vehicles with
illegally changed parts can produce extremely loud sounds. He said they have been a growing
problem in recent years. Bottcher supports the use of radar to reduce noise in the city.
New York City already has some of the strongest rules in the country aimed at limiting
noise on city streets. It has set permissible noise levels for building-tools and vehicles. The
new devices record the vehicle numbers of offenders, who then receive a violation notice in
the mail. Owners face fines of 800 for their first noise offense. Some could. be required to pay
up to $2, 625 if they have three violations and ignore court hearings.
The AP says there is evidence to support the idea that noise affects not only hearing but
also mood and mental health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDCP)even
says there are possible links between noise and higher risks for heart disease and raised blood
pressure.
However, some people in the city say the government efforts to quiet loud vehicles have
gone too far. One person opposed to the policy is Phillip Franklin, a 30-year-old car lover
from the Bronx area of New York. He launched an online effort to protest noise rules. “The
majority of us. live here in New York City, where noise is a part of our daily lives,” said a
document explaining. his effort. Franklin noted that quiet vehicles can also present dangers to
inattentive individuals walking around New York City.
28.What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A.Technology is key in noise reduction.
B.Cases of violating noise rules are reduced.
C.More people will be punished for loud vehicles.
D.The efforts to identify loud vehicles seemed in vain.
29.What is a concern according to Bottcher?
A.The wide use of radar.
B.Increasing loud vehicles.
D.Illegally changed vehicles.
C.The setting of noise levels.
30.What is the purpose of Paragraph 4?
A.To summarize the previous paragraphs.B.To provide some proof for the policy.
C.To add some background information. D.To introduce a new topic for discussion.
31.What conclusion can we draw from the text?
5
A.Not all people approve of the noise rules.
B.New Yorkers are all used to loud noise.
C.Noise has nothing to do with high blood pressure.
D.Quiet vehicles will cause safety problems.
D
A new analysis of photographs from the International Space Station has identified a shift
in the kind of lighting technologies that European countries are using at night to brighten
streets and buildings. Researchers have found that the old warm high-pressure street lights are
rapidly being replaced by cooler LED lights. The University of Exeter study, published in
Science Advances, claimed that "this phenomenon is widely increasing the risk of harmful
effects to ecosystems".
LED lighting was promoted as being intended to reduce emissions, but its usage has
raised energy consumption. One explanation of this is that the increase in power efficiency
and the associated decrease in economic cost have driven increased demand for lighting,
therefore, any efficiency gains have been counteracted by increased consumption of light.
The study also claimed that previous research into the effects of light pollution have
underestimated the impacts of blue light radiation. Chief among the health consequences of
blue light is its ability to reduce the production of melatonin(褪黑素)that regulates sleep
patterns in humans and other organisms. Scientific studies have warned that increased
exposure to artificial blue light can worsen people's sleeping habits.
The increase in blue light radiation in Europe has also reduced the visibility of stars in
the night sky, which may have impacts on people's sense of nature. Blue light can also alter
the behavioral patterns of animals including bats and moths, as it can change their movements
towards or away from light sources.
David Smith, of the conservation charity Buglife, said, "Light pollution can dramatically
impact animals. We should consider light from a wider biological perspective than that of just
humans and focus on better quality lighting that is harmonious with our natural world. Better
quality and lower levels of lighting would help save energy, and lower financial costs, while
also making our environment safer for living beings. Authorities can dim the lights during
night hours, and change the bandwidths(带宽值)of their LED bulbs to produce less harmful
blue light."
32.What is the phenomenon described in paragraph 1?
A.The rising demand for public lighting.
B.The increasing use of LED lights.
C.OId street lights producing lots of emissions.
D.Artificial lights at night wasting much energy.
33.What does the underlined word "counteracted" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
6
A.Judged.
B. Maintained. C. Balanced. D.Strengthened.
34.In which aspect are people influenced by blue lights?
A.Sleep patterns. B. Eyesight. C.Learning ability. D.Social behaviors.
35.Why does the author mention David Smith?
A.To stress the importance of saving energy.
B.To persuade authorities to avoid using LED lights.
C.To show ways of improving the quality of LED bulbs.
D.To provide suggestions on reducing light pollution.

I will never forget what happened when I was at the age of 10. It was one week before
Children’s Day. I was looking forward to my gifts. Given the fact that I was the youngest in
my family, the other members would like to give me a different gift. Whatever the gift was, I
was always more than glad to accept them. Undoubtedly, I was being taken care of. Naturally,
it was feeling so good.
In most cases, my uncles would ask me smilingly what I desired before Children’s Day
and that year I was eagerly waiting to be asked. What a beautiful spaceship it was! That
flashed across my eyes when I opened a big gift box. However, it greeted me against my
expectation that year.
It was exactly one week before Children’s Day. Just one week, she could hardly wait. My
dear mother told my father she, my future-to-be little sister, would come to the world.
Immediately, we went to the hospital. After an hour, they told me that I had the little sister. I
didn’t want her but I wanted a spaceship. The days that followed went so fast. No one was
taking care of me. Everyone was talking about her. My life would go off the beaten track. I
had no intention of being a big brother. But it just happened in an instant.
On the day before Children’s Day, everyone in my home was paying closer and closer
attention to my newborn sister. My family was becoming hers. Even my uncles asked me
nothing about the gift again. She stole everything I’d ever had. My life and presents were
completely spoiled. On thinking of this, I couldn’t help crying in the middle night sleep.
Suddenly, I had a nightmare and was startled (吓一跳) awake. Shadows being all around me,
I was defenseless and helpless. I rushed into my parents’ bedroom but they were sleeping so
soundly that I couldn’t wake them up. They were just stressed out and worn out. Standing
near their bed, I tried not to cry when I saw her. She was wide awake, looking at me with her
big eyes twinkling in her small bed.
