It is hard to say I was a runner years ago. The longest I had ever run was 5 km. What’s more, I didn’t like running. No matter how hard I tried, every so often I would fasten my old shoes, walk out of the house with heavy steps, get less than a mile in and wonder why I was bothering, especially when there are many more satisfying ways of exercising.
Before last summer, I had never taken part in any kind of race at all. But at the end of July, I completed a triathlon(三项全能)after two weeks’ training. At the end of it came the run—which ended up more like a walk. Then I realized something about it attracted me. The extremely painful fun of doing something I hated and was unprepared for turned out to be an excitement. The difficulty felt like something to test my abilities.
When an invitation of the Berlin Marathon dropped onto my desk a few weeks after the triathlon, it felt like a change of fate. After the triathlon, I didn’t say I should start running at once. Was it because I hate running? In fact, in course of running I enjoyed the joy of exceeding my limits. I felt necessary to find out again where those limits might lie. So I said yes.
Training for a marathon often takes at least 20 weeks or more. The training plan becomes something to stop me worrying when the race seems too frightening. This worry feels impossible to avoid, but there is something equally sure about the training plan: if I follow it, then I have done everything I can; if I do everything I can, then I won’t regret what comes at the end.
4. What aspect of the triathlon drew the writer?
A. The special feeling of facing a challenge.
B. The fun of walking to the finish line.
C. The excitement of winning a race.
D. The two-week painful training.
5. Why did the writer accept the invitation of the Berlin Marathon?
A. He was eager to change his destiny.
B. He wasn’t supposed to stop running.
C. He wanted to realize his full potential.
D. He was keen on taking part in another triathlon.
6. Which of the following words can best describe the writer?
A. Patient and pessimistic. B. Courageous and determined.
C. Helpful and persistent. D. Energetic and changeable.
7. What can be learned from the text?
A. A bad beginning makes a bad ending.
B. Challenge ourselves to live without regrets.
C. Life is full of challenges that can’t be avoided.
D. Exercise is to the body what reading is to the mind.

Professor Veena Sahajwalla, 2022 Australian of the year, has created a solution to our massive trash problem: waste microfactories. These little trash processors (处理器)-some as small as 500 square feet- house a scries of machines that recycle waste and transform it into new materials with thermal technology (热技术). The new all-in -one approach could leave our current recycling processes in the dust.
In 2018 she launched the first microfactory, establishing a model of recycling that enables businesses and communities to develop commercial opportunities while addressing local waste problems. A second one began recycling plastics in 2019. Now, her lab group is working with university and industry partners to commercialize their patented Microfactory technology. “The small scale of the machines will make it easier for them to one day operate on renewable energy, unlike most large manufacturing plants. The approach will also allow cities to recycle waste into new products on location, avoiding the long, often international, high-emission journeys between recycling processors and manufacturing plants. With a microfactory, gone are the days of needing separate facilities to collect and store materials, extract (提取) elements and produce new products,” says Sahajwalla.
Traditionally, recycling plants break down materials for reuse in similar products-like melting down plastic to make more plastic things. Sahajwalla’s invention advances this idea by taking materials from an old product and creating something different. “The kids don’t look like the parents,” she says. Sahajwalla refers to this process as “the fourth R,” adding “re-form” to the common phrase “reduce, reuse, recycle”.
Professor Veena Sahajwalla’s programs help to develop innovation and promote cooperation with industry, ensuring that sustainable materials and processes become commercially practical solutions for dealing with waste.
8. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To introduce a new type of trash processor.
B. To introduce the process of recycling waste.
C. To prove the seriousness of the trash problem.
D. To show the current situation of trash recycling.
9. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The origin of waste microfactories.
B. The advantages of waste microfactories.
C. The influences of waste microfactories.
D. The shocking scale of waste microfactories.
10. What does “re-form” in Paragraph 3 refer to according to Sahajwalla?
A. Generating new materials with waste.
B. Extracting materials from the waste.
C. Updating the whole recycling process.
D Transforming waste into similar products.
11. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A fiction novel.
B. A business report.
C. A science magazine.
D. A chemical textbook.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. A 11. C

Nowadays some companies are attempting to grow seafood from cells in a laboratory rather than harvesting it from the oceans.
With massive problems with overfishing worldwide and growing demand for shrinking supplies of seafood, the way fish currently makes its way to our plates isn’t a long-term viable option. Between 1961 and 2016, the average annual increase in global food fish consumption outpaced population growth. Those are figures not sustainable for us, the fish or the environment as a whole.
Cellular seafood could be the answer. Just don’t make the mistake of calling it lab-grown fish. ‘‘None of us in the industry would call it lab-grown seafood,” says Mike Selden, CEO of Finless Foods. ‘‘Finless Foods isn’t lab-grown. We experiment and create our science in the lab, but don’t produce there. Our products come from a production base much like a farm as a production base for animals.’’
Finless Foods is a tech company in San Francisco. Beginning in 2017, it’s been working to bring to market a species of cultured bluefin tuna (蓝鳍金枪鱼) created using cellular technology. Shortly after that, the company produced its first pound of bluefin tuna meat for a cost of about $19,000. Since then, however, it’s been the first battle to bring that price down.
Selden terms what Finless Foods is doing as ‘‘cell-based seafood’’. ‘‘We’re growing seafood from real seafood cells,’’ Selden explained. ‘‘We take cells from a fish once, and then grow them endlessly from that. We do the same process that happens inside of a fish and make it happen outside of a fish.”
The goal of cellular seafood isn’t to entirely destroy the current seafood industry. Instead, it’s intended to augment it—and perhaps to help reduce some of the more harmful aspects of current fishing practices like overfishing and illegal fishing. And when it comes to certain sea species, this laboratory-based approach could help create a plentiful supply of certain fish without endangering the survival of certain overfished species as a whole.
12. What is the main function of the second paragraph?
A. Warning us of the shrinking seafood supplies.
B. Stressing the significance of cellular seafood.
C. Analyzing the reasons for global overfishing.
D. Showing the environmental effect of seafood.
13. What is the top priority of producing cellular seafood ?
A. Cutting down the high cost of production.
B. Enriching the nutrient content.
C. Reducing harmful health effect.
D. Simplifying the production process.
14. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Cellular seafood isn’t lab-grown food because it is processed in a production base wholly.
B. Finless Foods does the same process inside a fish as a fish does.
C. Finless Foods can create a new range of fish.
D. Cellular seafood can strengthen the current seafood industry.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Seafood in Cells. B. Cheaper Seafood.
C. Insufficient Seafood Supplies. D. Current Seafood Industry.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. A

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My teenage son, Jordan, always complained about having to be home earlier than all his friends. He would tell me that he was already seventeen, but still had a curfew (宵禁). He believed he was practically an adult. I pointed out that he was not an adult as he was still in high school.
“You don’t trust me!” he yelled. Before I continued, he rolled his eyes, slammed the door and walked away. I sighed. How could I make Jordan see that I only wanted to keep him safe?
I decided to go for a walk, hoping the December air would clear my head. I opened the front door and nearly stepped on her: a small black cat, just like a meatball. “Hi, Meatball,” I said, bringing her into my arms. I walked back in, touching her neck gently. Meatball seemed happy enough to come in the house, but after an hour or two, she sat by the door, meowing to go back outside.
“Why won’t she just stay in with us all the time?” Nathan, my youngest son asked.
I explained to him that she was happy here but she liked being able to come and go as she pleased.
“That must be nice,” Jordan muttered from the other room, complaining why the cat, not him, could come and go. He even asked me to give Meatball a curfew.
Meatball became a regular.
One night, temperatures were unusually low. Meatball stood at the door, meowing to go outside.
I shook my head at her, afraid that she might freeze to death. She stared at me and meowed again. I patted her head, “I know you’re not happy, but it’s for your own good.”
“Mom’s not being mean to you” Nathan told the cat. “She’s just trying to keep you from turning into a frozen meatball.” We both laughed at his joke.
The next morning, I couldn’t find Meatball. I asked the kids if anyone had seen her.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Jordan nodded, “I let her out last night.” My mouth dropped open. “She was outside all night?” I was so furious, “It was freezing and she could die!” Jordan choked back his words, stunned. I grabbed my coat and rushed outside. Jordan followed, fear welling up in his eyes. Several minutes later, the poor thing was found, shaking and curling into a tiny ball. I picked her up, unsure whether she was alive or dead. Jordan was scared, “We need a vet! Now!”
As I drove to the animal hospital, Jordan sat in the back, holding Meatball inside his coat. I could hear him talking to the cat, apologizing repeatedly. Luckily, the vet saved Meatball. Seeing her eyes open, Jordan stroked her head, all tears. Then, surprisingly, he turned to me. He apologized for what he had done. “I know you just want to keep me safe,” he murmured. I felt a lump in my throat. He rubbed Meatball’s back, “Looks like we are both going to observe the curfew. It’s for our own good.”
