A donation by a famous writer has helped start an effort, called the United States of Readers, to help poor children read more books.
The classroom programme is being launched by Scholastic Book Clubs with a donation of $1.5 million from the writer James Patterson.
Scholastic announced the programme recently, aiming to bring books to 32,000 poor children who are in kindergarten to eighth grade.
Judy Newman, president of Scholastic Book Clubs, said that in many communities people don't have enough money to buy books. So her company "needed to come up with an alternative to our tried-and-true model, because every child needs to be able to choose and own books, and see themselves as a reader!"
Scholastic is a large publisher of books for children and educational materials. Its goal is to get books into schools to increase literacy. The company has publishing rights in the U.S. for books like the Harry Potter and Hunger Games series.
A gift from Patterson helped start the new programme. He is credited with selling millions of books. He has already donated more than 10 million to teachers and students through Scholastic.
He said that he has supported literacy for many years. He believes reading skills are important for the country.
“In many cases, kids simply need access to books—and especially books they want to read—to fall in love with reading, characters, and stories.
Patterson added that the programme “will bring books to those schools and communities that need them the most, and ones that we haven't served before.”
Scholastic describes the programme on its website. It says the United States of Readers programme targets children in. schools serving poor communities. The company said it has chosen a limited number of schools to take part this year but hopes to expand the programme in the coming years.
24. Who of the following is the target of the United States of Readers?
A. Teenagers who like literature very much.
B. Children from less developed countries.
C. Schools and communities that have worked together before.
D. Children in urgent need of books in lower grades in backward areas.
25. In Judy Newman's opinion, what is the main problem to be solved by the future model?
A. Attacting more donated books.
B. Expanding the number of books.

A. To translate foreign works.

27. What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A. To entertain poor children.
B. To advertise for new books.
C. To introduce a new reading programme.
D. To criticize the traditional teaching model.

When we visit museums, we see cultural artifacts—from everyday household items to precious carvings and statues, which give us a glimpse into the diverse cultures and communities from around the world.
However, controversy surrounds these artifacts and whether or not countries should return these pieces of culture if they were stolen or forcefully. taken during colonization (殖民).
On Wednesday, October 7, 2020, the Dutch advisory committee officially released a national report agreeing to the return of cultural artifacts that were stolen from its previous colonies such as Indonesia, Suriname, and islands on the Caribbean. Through these actions, the Dutch government acknowledged the unfair treatment the colonies had previously experienced and demonstrated respect for the culture of these countries.
By the 18th and 19th centuries, European countries such as Britain, France, and the Netherlands had colonized many African and Asian countries. During their rule, they either seized artifacts or took them as spoils of wars, and brought them to their own countries where they are now on display in museums.
Over the years, European museums have received requests for the return of artifacts. The debate regarding this issue took a turn in 2018 when a French report was released that directed that all heritage objects brought to French museums be restored. With the official release of this report, museums all across Europe began reconsidering their previous policies on colonial treasures.
Those who propose returning these objects to their original homes argue that with technology enabling virtual museum tours, returning these artifacts to their homeland does not take away the opportunity to learn about them. Furthermore, the country of origin will receive a significant part of their heritage back, and these artifacts will be given a chance to be truly appreciated in proper historical context.
Those against the restoration claim that culture is shared treasure and the artifacts are in fact “cultural ambassadors” that promote tolerance and understanding. They believe that while stealing them was wrong, history is full of “good” and “bad” actors. Moreover, they feel that keeping the cultural objects in the current museums has kept millions of artifacts safe from disfiguration and damage.
28. What did the Dutch government admit?
A. The colonies were treated unfairly.
B. The colonies had stolen cultural artifacts.
C. The colonies had experienced cultural boom.
D. The colonies had been respected for their culture.
29. Which country played a decisive role in returning stolen artifacts?
A. Egypt. B. France.
C. Britain. D. The Netherlands.
30. Why do some people support the return of stolen artifacts?
A. These artifacts reflect a culture of shared treasure.
B. These artifacts prove that the history is difficult to explain.
C. These artifacts will be enjoyed in their historical background.
D. These artifacts help people distinguish good history from bad history.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Are Virtual Museum Tours Meaningful?
B. Do People Appreciate Stolen Treasures?
C. Will Stolen Treasures Belong to Colonies?
D. Should Museums Return Stolen Treasures?
D
Nightmares(噩梦) are considered to be common among young children with incidence reducing as they grow older. They occur in the second half of sleep during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep: Those who have experienced them will be familiar with the feeling of waking suddenly with a sense of fear and worry.
Night terrors, a sleep disorder, differ from nightmares and occur during deep sleep (non-REM) cycles in the first half of the night. A night terror is often characterized by a loud scream and the individual sitting upright in a panicked state, though unaware of any of the action. The violent and rapid move of the body and limbs(四肢) are witnessed in more extreme cases. Children wake, up in the morning unaware of their, activity throughout the night.
Professor Dieter Wolke explained, “We certainly don't want to worry parents with this news; three in every four children experience nightmares at this young age. However nightmares continuing longer than that period or night terrors that continue into adolescence can be an early indicator of something more significant in later life.”
A group of children are assessed six times between the ages of two and nine. The possibility of experiencing psychotic(精神病的) experiences in adolescence increased with the incidence of nightmares. Those who only reported one period of repeated nightmares saw a 16% rise, whereas those who reported three or more sustained periods of nightmares throughout the study saw a 56% increase in risk.
In contrast, problems with falling asleep or night waking had no relationship to later psychotic experiences.
Dr Helen Fisher, of King's College London, added, “The best advice is to try to maintain a lifestyle that promotes healthy sleep hygiene (卫生) for your child, by creating an environment that allows for the best possible quality of sleep. Diet is a key part of this, such as avoiding sugary drinks before bed, but at that young age we’d always recommend removing any affecting stimuli(刺激) from the bedroom—be it television, video games or otherwise. That's the most practical change you can make.
32. According to the passage, which of the following statements about nightmares is true?
A. They happen to most young children.
B. They are common among adolescents.
C. They are uncommon among young children.
D. They will disappear when children grow older.
33. What happens when night terrors happen?
A. People are not in deep sleep.
B. People suddenly scream or move.
C. People will have psychotic experiences.
D. People know what has happened when waking up.
34. What does the “something more significant” referred to by Professor Dieter Wolke mean?
A. Good health. B. Good sleep.
C. Mental problems. D. Sleep Problems.
35. What should be done in order for the children to have the best quality of sleep?
A. There should be no TV set in their bedrooms.
B. They should have sweet milk before going to sleep.
C. They'd better play video games before going to sleep.
D. The radio in their bedrooms should be on when they sleep.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Let us look at what makes an effective persuasive speech.
Choose a good topic.
First, you should choose a topic you know something about or have researched well to prepare for your speech. Make sure it is a subject about which people have different opinions. 36
It is also best to choose a subject your listeners care about or can act on. 37 You can expect that they care about how the town appears, or that they can change their actions. So, giving a speech about why littering harms your town's appearance might persuade people who do it to stop.
38
You should consider your listeners as you plan your speech. What do they value? Thinking of the things your listeners value will help you form arguments in your speech. If you want them to stop eating unhealthy foods, for example, you may appeal to the value of their appearance. You will talk about how healthy foods result in good-looking skin and an attractive body.
Prepare your argument.
39 We use Greek words to describe them because the ancient Greeks developed and appealed to these ideas. They are:
Ethos—appeal to the listeners' ethics or morals.
Pathos—appeal to the listeners' emotions.
Logos—appeal to the listeners' logic or intelligence.
Organize your speech.
You should make an outline of your speech. Start with an attention-getting statement. Then explain your main idea and give evidence to support your argument. List the points you want to make and think of how to answer arguments against your position.
Finish with a call to action—what do you want your listeners to do? 40 Do not plan to read the speech word-for-word from a paper.
A. Know your audience.
B. Make the theme clear.
C. What will you do if you fail?
D. Do you see people in your town littering?
E. It would not be logical to speak about a fact recognized by everybody.
F. There are three common ways to persuade people of your way of thinking.
G. Finally, practice at home until you need only a note card with your main points on it when you give the speech.

However, other people held that cloning technology has too many problems at present, and that the misuse of it may lead to unimaginable consequences.
In my opinion, we must be careful to make appropriate use of it. In this case it could bring us a lot of benefits; otherwise, we may end up suffering because of it.

(Text 1)
W: I nearly came to see you yesterday morning.
M: I wish that you had, for then I wouldn't have been cleaning the windows, and so I wouldn't have fallen off the stepladder.
(Text 2)
W: Jim has quite serious problems with his chest and coughs badly all the time. He looks thin.
M: The doctor has given him some medicine to take for his cough. He really should listen to the doctor and cut down on smoking. With the decrease, he is likely to gain weight.
(Text 3)
M: Now I'd like to talk some more about Bill's performance. He has been on the job for a week and already he's acting like he is the boss.
W: He's not going to last long with that attitude.
(Text 4)
W: As the saying goes, God helps those who help themselves. I heard you got a full mark in maths exams.
Congratulations!
M: Thanks! I'm sure you also did a good job.
(Text 5)
W: I'd really like to learn how to play the violin, but it looks so complicated.
M: If you can play just one musical instrument, you'll be able to learn how to play others relatively quickly.
What about going over the basic this afternoon?
(Text 6)
M: It's very nice of you to invite me to China.
W: I'm very glad you could come, Mr. Smith. Would you like to have some chicken?
M: Thank you. This is my first time to a Chinese restaurant. When I was in Canada, I know some good Italian and French restaurants and I am used to going there. Could you tell me the different features of Chinese food?
W: Generally speaking, Cantonese food is a bit light. Shanghai food is rather oily. And Hunan dishes have a strong and hot taste.
M: Chinese dishes are well prepared and delicious. They are very good in colour, flavour, and taste.
W: Would you care for another helping?
M: No more, thank you. I want to give this soup a try.
W: How do you like the food tonight?
M: It tastes neither strong nor hot. It's the most delicious dinner I've ever had.
W: I'm so glad you like it.
(Text 7)
W: Oh no! I don't have Amanda's phone number.
M: What's wrong, Miyako?
W: Amanda said we should get together again, and that I should call her, but I don't have her phone number.
M: I see. Well, don't worry about it. For Americans, that's usually a friendly way to say goodbye. It's like when Americans say “Hello, how are you?” But they don't want you to tell them how you are, it's just a friendly greeting.
W: So saying “Let's get together sometime.” is similar to that?
M: Yeah, that's right.
W: I have gained a lot of knowledge. Culture is closely related with language.
M: Right! Understanding different cultures is an important aspect of mastering and using English.
W: I profit more from one meeting with you than from ten years of reading. I should communicate with foreigners more and share this experience. Thank you very much for speaking with me.
M: Not at all!
(Text 8)
W: Simon, can you imagine I forgot to remind the boss of the important meeting?
M: What an awkward mistake! As a secretary, you shouldn't forget to keep the boss informed of all the important schedules. This is quite different from your previous job as a flight attendant and a bank clerk.
W: I certainly know it, but this morning I didn't feel very well, so...
M: That's really a silly mistake. Any small mistake may cost our company great losses.
W: I understand what you mean. It makes me look incapable. I'm afraid I will be fired. How can I fix it?
M: Apologize to him and give an explanation.
W: I hope our boss will forgive me. I really don't want to lose my job.
M: Relax. I believe he will take your condition into careful consideration.
W: You are so sweet.
(Text 9)
M: How amazing Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics are! Do you think so, Linda?
W: You can say that again, Tom! I like the opening ceremony most. Did you go there to watch any games?
M: No, but my friend Jack Ma was a volunteer there. As the event is over, visitors are allowed to go into the Stadium. He invited us to visit it and other sporting venues next weekend.
W: That doesn't appeal to me. It's freezing cold. Besides, I have just come back from a winter camp.
M: You have been expecting to learn how to ski. Now it is the perfect time.
W: But I have planned to take a local trip, which is money-saving.
M: Come on. Jack told me there is an amazing ice lake, beautiful snow, and various winter sports. He has already reserved a hotel for us nearby.
W: Well, I can't say no. But I have already agreed to do something with my friend Susan at that time.
M: She's going, too.
W: Really? Then...I guess I'll go.
(Text 10)
M: When I was small and my grandmother died, I couldn't understand why I had no tears. But that night when my dad tried to cheer me up, my laughs turned into crying.
Just as laughing has many health advantages, scientists are discovering that so does crying.
Whatever helps us to reduce pressure is important to our emotional health, and crying seems to work well.
One study found that 85 percent of women and 73 percent of men report feeling better after crying.
Researchers agree that when we cry, people around us become kinder and friendlier and they are more ready to provide support and comfort. Tears also enable us to understand our emotions better. Sometimes we don't even know we're very sad until we cry. We learn about our emotions through crying, and then we can deal with them.
Just as crying can be healthy, not crying—holding back tears of anger, pain or suffering—can be bad for physical health. Studies have shown that too much control of emotions can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems and some other illness. If you have a health problem, doctors will certainly not ask you to cry. But when you feel like crying, don't fight it. It's a natural, healthy and emotional response.
