When I first set foot on Mexican soil, I spoke Spanish well. So when I asked a local ice-cream seller for an ice-cream, and he said “ahorita,” which directly translates to “right now,” I took him at his word, believing that its arrival was immediate.
I sat near his shop and waited. Half an hour passed and still no ice-cream arrived, so I asked again about it. “Ahorita,” he told me again. His face was a mix of confusion and maybe even embarrassment.
I was torn. Waiting longer wasn’t pleasant, but I felt it was impolite to walk away, especially if the ice-cream was now being delivered just for me. But finally, after waiting too long, I made a rush for the nearest bus to take me home. As I left, I signalled at my wrist and shrugged to the ice-cream seller. Obviously, I couldn’t wait any longer and it really wasn’t my fault. His face was, once again, one of total confusion.
This experience faded from my memory until years later when I came back to live in Mexico. I discovered that understanding “ahorita” took not a fluency in the language, but rather a fluency in the culture. When someone from Mexico says “ahorita,” it should almost never be taken literally (照字面地); its meaning changes greatly with context. As a linguist told me, “Ahorita could mean tomorrow, in an hour, within five years or never.” It is even used as a polite way of saying “no, thanks” when refusing an offer.
Since I moved to Mexico, my attitude towards time has changed dramatically. I don’t worry so much about being late; I am generally still on time for appointments, but when I’m not, I don’t panic. Ironically, it would seem that “Ahorita Time” has actually allowed me to live far more in the “right now” than I ever did before.
4. Why did the author believe that his ice-cream’s arrival was immediate?
A. Because the seller told him that it would be served soon.
B. Because he was confident of the direct translation of “ahorita”.
C. Because the ice-cream shop was not crowded.
D. Because he asked about it again and the seller answered the same.
5. What docs the underlined word “torn” mean in the third paragraph?
A. tired. B. too hungry to move. C. unable to decide. D. thirsty.
6. What should be paid attention to when understanding “ahorita”?
A. A fluency in the culture. B. A fluency in the language.
C. Translating it literally. D. Its unchangeable meaning.
7. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. The importance of understanding foreign cultures
B. The different meanings of “ahorita”
C. How interesting Spanish is
D. The confusing way Mexicans tell time
B 5. C 6. A 7. D
根据文章第一段“When I first set foot on Mexican soil, I spoke Spanish well. So when I asked a local ice-cream seller for an ice-cream, and he said “ahorita,” which directly translates to “right now,” I took him at his word, believing that its arrival was immediate.(当我第一次踏上墨西哥的土地时,我的西班牙语说得很好。所以,当我向当地的冰淇淋小贩要冰淇淋时,他说“ahorita”,翻译过来就是“马上”的意思,我就相信了他的话,相信冰淇淋马上就到了。)”可知,因为作者的西班牙语讲得很好,而“ahorita”翻译过来就是“马上”的意思,所以作者相信他的冰激凌马上就到了。故选B项。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第三段“Waiting longer wasn’t pleasant, but I felt it was impolite to walk away, especially if the ice-cream was now being delivered just for me.(再等下去一点也不愉快,但我觉得走开是不礼貌的,尤其是现在冰淇淋是专门为我送去的。)”
根据文章倒数第二段“I discovered that understanding “ahorita” took not a fluency in the language, but rather a fluency in the culture. (我发现理解“ahorita”并不需要语言的流利,而是需要文化的流利。)”可知,理解“ahorita”的意思需要注意的是文化的流利性。故选A项。
根据文章最后一段“Since I moved to Mexico, my attitude towards time has changed dramatically. I don’t worry so much about being late; I am generally still on time for appointments, but when I’m not, I don’t panic. Ironically, it would seem that “Ahorita Time” has actually allowed me to live far more in the “right now” than I ever did before.(自从我搬到墨西哥,我对时间的态度发生了巨大的变化。我不太担心迟到。我通常都能准时赴约,但当我不能准时赴约时,我也不会惊慌。具有讽刺意味的是,“Ahorita Time”实际上让我比以往任何时候都更能活在“当下”。)”以及文章其他段落的内容可知,文章主要讲的是作者在墨西哥说西班牙语与当地人因对于表示时间的单词“ahorita”的不同理解造成的误会,所以文章主要围绕着墨西哥人表达时间的令人困惑的方式展开,因此D项The confusing way Mexicans tell time( 墨西哥人令人困惑的表达时间的方式)作为文章标题最合适。故选D项。

Scientists near San Francisco work to identify a type of endangered fish using a tool that was originally made for treating cancer.
Currently, CRISPR is used to change the genetic material in specific cells. By changing the structure of immune cells, it helps recognize and fight cancer. The same technology is now used in a special machine called Sherlock, which, of course, is named after the famous investigator Sherlock Holmes. They do not, however, use Sherlock to change fish cells. Instead, the ocean researchers catch the fish, collect a small amount of mucus (黏液) and then test the cells to find the genetic makeup of the fish.
The researchers have found that the technology is extremely helpful when looking at different species of Chinook salmon, because they look nearly the same. It can be done in about 30 minutes. In the past, the researchers would have to wait weeks or months to get test results.
In the past, the scientists would catch the Chinook salmon and measure them to tell them apart. “It’s not very accurate,” said Andrea Schreier, an associate professor at the University of California in Davis, who is working on the salmon. Schreier said when they catch the fish, the Sherlock machine can quickly tell them if they have one of the special salmon. It’s important because it allows the scientists to do things that will help the endangered salmon live longer. For example, they can catch them in lakes far away from the coast and take them by truck to the San Francisco Bay. In the past, the fish might have tried to make it to the Bay by swimming in rivers. However, due to climate change, the river water is sometimes too warm for the fish to make the trip safely.
Schreier said she feels good about the project because she likes being able to assist with conservation. “I really want to work to maintain our ecosystems and our native populations as much as possible, given all of the pressures that we humans place on them through our different activities.’’
8. Which of the following best describe the technology?
A. Impractical. B. Inaccurate. C. Efficient. D. Economical.
9. What do the new technology and the traditional way have in common?
A. They test the fish mucus to tell them apart.
B. They are carried out by researchers in the lab.
C. They originally aimed at detecting cancer.
D. They help researchers tell different salmons apart.
10. What can be inferred about the Chinook salmons?
A. They will soon die out. B. They are of the same size.
C. They are used to cool water. D. They are now well protected.
11. What do we know about Andrea Schreier from the text?
A. She thinks humans are greatly pressured.
B. She is rather devoted to the conservation.
C. She is unsatisfied with her work.
D. She thinks her work needs improvement.
C 9. D 10. C 11. B

Buildings, pollution, poor soil, insects, and even car crashes can add to tree loss. However, between 2016 and 2021, the city of Seattle in Washington state was reported to have lost about 255 hectares of tree covering, for which climate change was blamed. Then came the driest summer on Seattle’s record books in 2022. The drier conditions and hotter temperatures have left many trees with brown leaves, naked branches, and extreme seeding. These are all signs of tree stress.
According to Nicholas Johnson, a tree expert for Seattle City Parks, if this warming climate continues we are going to have a lot of trees die. Just like people, under the heat trees get weak.
Researchers from France and Australia studied the effect of hotter temperatures and less rain on more than 3,100 trees and plants in 164 cities across 78 countries. They found about half the trees in the cities were experiencing climate conditions beyond their limits. They also found that by 2050 nearly all trees planted in Australian cities will not survive.
It’s not the gradual change but these extreme swings of too much water, too little water, too much wind, and terrible storms that are going to cause these rapid changes. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina destroyed about 10 percent of the trees in New Orleans, Louisiana. And in 2021, Hurricane Ida uprooted many new tree plantings.
To settle the problem of tree loss, non-native trees have been brought to cities for some time. In the city of Bellevue, Washington, experts are growing different kinds of trees specifically for climate change. On city grounds, they are planting baby giant sequoias, just a few centimeters tall. The giant sequoias are not native to the Pacific Northwest area. But the trees can deal with the lack of rain and insects. Once these trees are established, they grow incredibly fast. Having many different kinds and ages of trees is important to keeping urban forests alive.
“Life always finds a way,” said Nicholas Johnson. “And in Seattle, people are helping life find a way.”
12. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The bad condition of trees in Seattle.
B. The terrible climate in Seattle in recent years.
C. Natural reasons for tree loss.
D. The signs of tree stress.
13. What is endangering the trees in Australia cities?
A. Buildings. B. Pollution.
C. Extreme climate. D. Car crashes.
14. How do tree experts solve the problem of tree death?
A. By improving planting methods.
B. By changing the kinds of trees.
C. By treating trees as babies.
D. By improving the soil quality.
15. Which is Nicholas Johnson’s attitude to the future of trees in cities?
A. Indifferent. B. Negative. C. Skeptical. D. Positive.
A 13. C 14. B 15. D

After observing what was happening in his house, the boy decided to do something for his family. He picked up his only toy, a ball, and left his house with a mission—to help his family.
Little Adler walked to the nearest store with his last toy in hand, hoping he could sell it. While the little boy was selling his toy at the street, a man with the TikTok name Ruben Cervantes spotted him. Curious, he approached Adler to see what happened to him.
With tears in his eyes the little one said, “I just want to sell my only toy, sir. Would you like it?” When Cervantes learned Adler was selling his toy to help his family, he asked, “How much is it?” Adler replied, “I don’t want money, sir I just want milk and bread for my family.”
At that moment, Cervantes was so moved While other children at his age were enjoying and living a carefree life, Adler was worrying about his home’s financial situation. Without hesitation, Cervantes took the ball from the boy, gave him a hug and said, “Don’t cry, my boy. I’ll keep your ball for now, hoping to play it with you one day.” Cervantes did buy milk and bread in exchange for his ball and sent him back home. The boy flashed a toothy smile and said, “Thank you so much, sir. I’m looking forward.”
Immediately Cervantes got home, he posted Adler’s story on TikTok. All the viewers were touched by his devotion to his family and expressed their willingness to help the poor family. For a month, piles of food and clothes were flooding into Cervantes’ home. Apparently, it’s time for him to pay a visit.
