The Biggest Stadiums in the World
People have been pouring into stadiums since the days of ancient Greece. In around 80 A.D., the Romans built the Colosseum, which remains the world’s best known stadium and continues to inform contemporary design. Rome’s Colosseum was 157 feet tall and had 80 entrances, seating 50,000 people. However, that was small fry compared with the city’s Circus Maximus, which accommodated around 250,000 people.
These days, safety regulations-not to mention the modern sports fan’s desire for a good view and comfortable seat—tend to keep stadium capacities(容量) slightly lower. Even soccer fans tend to have a seat each; gone are the days of thousands standing to watch the match.
For the biggest stadiums in the world, we have used data supplied by the World Atlas list so far, which ranks them by their stated permanent capacity, as well as updated information from official stadium websites.
All these stadiums are still funtional, still open and still hosting the biggest events in world sport.
·Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, Pyongyang D.P.R. Korea. Capacity: 150,000. Opened: May 1,1989.
·Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, Michigan, U. S. Capacity: 107,601. Opened: October 1, 1927.
·Beaver Stadium, State College, Pennsylvania, U. S. Capacity: 106,572. Opened: September 17, 1960.
·Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Ohio, U. S. Capacity: 104,944. Opened: October 7,1922.
·Kyle Field, College Station, Texas, U. S. Capacity: 102,512. Opened: September 24, 1927.
21.How many people could the Circus Maximus hold?
A.104,944. B.107,601. C.About 150,000. D.About 250,000.
22.Of the following stadiums, which is the oldest?
A.Michigan Stadium. B.Beaver Stadium. C.Ohio Stadium. D.Kyle Field.
23.What do the listed stadiums have in common?
A.They host big games. B.They have become tourist attractions.
C.They were built by Americans. D.They are favored by architects.

LeBron James is the new all-time scoring leader of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
He set the record with a jump shot (得分) in the third quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers game Tuesday night against Oklahoma City. James pushed his career total to 38,388 points and passed the scoring record that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had held for nearly 39 years.
After he made the shot for his 36th point of the night, James threw both hands in the air, and then smiled. Abdul-Jabbar sat up from his seal and clapped. The game stopped as members of James’ family, including his mother, his wife and their three children, went to the court for a ceremony honoring the moment.
“I’m there now because I never, ever thought about it,” James said, when asked what the scoring record meant to him.“The only thing I ever thought about was winning championships. But scoring championships and records, I’m telling you, was never on my mind.”
Abdul-Jabbar was a longtime player for the Lakers. He became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer on April 5, 1984 and retired (退休) in 1989 with 38,387 points. It was a record that some thought would last forever, with very few coming close. Great basketball players, including Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant, and Michael Jordan retired when they were still thousands of points away.
James, who is 38 years old, passed all of them and set the record in his 20th season. Abdul-Jabbar also played 20 NBA seasons.
During the on-court ceremony, Abdul-Jabbar handed a ball to James, showing a passing of the torch(火炬). James wiped away tears from his eyes and thanked the crowd. He also thanked his family and those who supported him, including NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and the late NBA Commissioner David Stern.
“I thank you guys so much for allowing me to be a part of something I’ve always dreamed about,” James said.
24.What did James’ jump shot mean?
A.A new record was born. B.His team won the game.
C.He made the longest shot. D.It was the key shot of the game.
25.W hy did the basketball match stop in the middle?
A.To give James time to recover. B.To have a celebration.
C.To drive out basketball fans. D.To change team members.
26.What do James and Abdul-Jabbar have in common?
A.They competed at the same time.
B.They created records by accident.
C.They set the record at the same age.
D.They played the same number of seasons for the record.
27.Why did Abdul-Jabbar hand a ball to James?
A.He admitted his failure. B.He announced his retirement.
C.He passed his title on to James. D.He expected to get it redesigned.

Nara is a popular destination for visitors to Japan and it is home to around 1, 000 blessed deer, which are officially considered as a national natural treasure in Japan and the image of the city. Many tourists like them and feed them treats. In July 2019, however, nine deer were found dead with plastic bags in their stomachs. Locals called on visitors not to throw away plastic bags in the park.
Hidetoshi Matsukawa, who works at tourism, wanted to come up with a different way to deal with the problem, and teamed up with a local paper maker and a design firm to work on the project.
They developed “Shikagami”, or deer paper, which is made from rice bran (糠) and milk boxes. They learned rice bran is mostly wasted in the processing of rice and this paper helps to reduce that waste as well.
Matsukawa has had the deer paper bags tested and says they are safe for human use. “We do not have the data to support that this paper is not harmful to deer, but this is safe for them as well as for human beings,” he said, laughing.
The bags have since been tested at local banks and the Todaiji temple, Nara’s main tourist attraction. The temple and banks bought 4, 000—5, 000 of the bags for 100 yen (around 95 cents) each as part of the pilot project. The price will fall if more businesses sign up to use the bags, said Matsukawa, who dreams of replacing plastic bags across the city to prevent more deer from dying after eating them.
“The news about the death of deer by plastic bags creates a bad influence, as though the park is a cemetery (墓地) for deer,” he said. “The paper bags can protect deer, as well as the image of Nara with deer.”
28.What happened to the blessed deer?
A.They were accepted as the image of Japan. B.They were harmed by plastic bags.
C.They got into the danger of dying out. D.They didn’t get enough food from tourists.
29.What did Matsukawa do with the problem of the deer’s death?
A.He prohibited visitors from feeding the deer.
B.He kept the deer away from humans.
C.He set up a deer protection organization.
D.He developed a new kind of paper.
30.What can we learn about deer paper from Matsukawa’s words?
A.It is sure to be harmless to all animals.
B.It can only be used to protect blessed deer.
C.It has passed the safety tests for human use.
D.It is unsatisfactory for environmental protection.
31.What is Matsukawa’s wish about deer paper bags?
A.They will be sold at higher prices. B.They will be used around the world.
C.They will be reused for more times. D.They will be widely used in the city.

Seismometer (地震仪) stations not only sense ground shaking due to earthquakes but alsc signals at the surface of our planet, such as storms and — as the researchers discovered — also floods. For this research, scientists turned an earthquake seismometer station near the town of Ahrweiler in Germany into a flood tracking tool. Using seismological information from the time of the event, they can tell people about the disaster in a timely way.
As the town of Ahrweiler took the full force of a flood, scientists found the seismometer exactly showed the track of the flood for one hour. By comparing mathematical models, the researchers were able to estimate (估算) the speed with which the flood moved. In fact, this was the only systematic source of measurable information about how the flood developed because the three present water level stations in the town were out of service early.
As the research shows, this method can provide information that is valuable to track flood for warning and rescue activities. “If the data from that station is available (可用的) and as our research now shows, real time information on the magnitude and speed of the flood will be available as well, ”says Dr Michael Dietze at the University of Gottingen. “As 10% of Europe’s surface area is likely to suffer from rapid flooding by rivers, we may want to start thinking about new ways of flood early warning. The present network of water level stations is not enough to be fully prepared for future events, ”Dietze adds.
Dietze and his team are working on a plan to discover further areas at risk of flooding and provide them with low cost “watch tower” scismometer pairs — an effort to cut the losses caused by future floods. Dietze says, “The deadly July flood that hit the Ahrweiler in Germany in July 2021 gave a warning to the locals, the government, emergency services and scientists — how much we need to learn to improve the present flood warning systems. ”
32.What can be known about Ahrweiler?
A.It saw an earthquake. B.It’s turned into a station.
C.It’s hard hit by a flood D.It praised these scientists.
33.What do the researchers expect of the seismometer?
A.It’ll speed up water supply. B.It’ll stop rapid flooding.
C.It’ll be a tool for a family. D.It’ll provide early warning.
34.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.People will cut the cost of public services. B.Efforts should be put into flood control.
C.The government must save its spending. D.The locals have made a plan of action.
35.Where is this text most likely from?
A.A health report. B.A guidebook. C.A short story. D.A science magazine.

Do you feel like an outsider, like you don’t belong anywhere or that you just don’t fit in? Here are some tips for you to deal with these feelings.
____36____ Often it’s really only your own mind and emotions that tell you that you don’t fit in. Actually, you may fit in fine. Feeling like you don’t belong isn’t always a bad thing either. Remember, it’s the people that are unique in this world that make the biggest impact. You don’t want to change yourself just to fit in with a certain group of people. ____37____ They end up wanting to gain approval from others and end up losing themselves in the process.
Let go of past anger. We’re so angry at people that we can’t relate to anyone or only expect the worst from others. Once I figured out how to let go of my past, I became much more comfortable being me. ____38____ Maybe because I didn’t care as much what they thought of me but more likely just because I think people are more affected by the “aura” you give off.
Focus on your wants and desires. Instead of focusing on the problem that you don’t feel like you fit in, try turning it around. What do you want to explore, what goals do you have, or what do you want to learn? ____39____ There are so many incredible and inspiring things in this world to explore. Focus on the positive and the beauty of the world rather than getting caught up in a negative situation.
The key to handling the situation of “I feel like an outsider” is really all in how you react to that feeling. ____40____ As those who have gone through the same feelings show, there can definitely be an advantage to being unique. You truly are special and there is no one else quite like you. You just need to be willing to share the real you with the world.
A.Don’t be so hard on yourself.
B.Appreciate what makes you so unique.
C.That’s where a number of people go wrong.
D.Ask yourself these questions and then go and do it.
E.I found it was easier to get along with other people.
F.You have so much more to offer by being true to yourself.
G.You can beat yourself up over it or you can become stronger for it.

When Donald Crouch first encountered Jim in his English class in rural Michigan, he saw an unhappy boy, who’d gone deep into a cocoon (茧) of silence.
Donald might have assumed that Jim was bored or uninterested or even backward. Certainly, he appeared to be all of those things.
But there was something in the young boy that lit up whenever the subject turned to poetry. It was unnoticeable, but Donald could see a shift in the boy ‘s attitude--a quiet but unmistakable enthusiasm that accompanied any discussion of Chaucer, Shakespeare, or Tennyson. A twinkle in his eyes would appear whenever Donald lectured on matters of English verse, something which proved to be most appealing to the otherwise disappointed teacher. Although Jim was interested in all manners of poetry, he seemed particularly excited when Donald would discuss Walt Whitman, that greatest of American poets.
One day Donald kept Jim after school and learned that Jim stuttered ( 口吃). Donald understood that Jim had accepted the written word because the spoken word had escaped him. The next day, Donald told the pupils to write a poem. Jim turned his assignment in, and Donald was surprised by how good it was.
The teacher read the assignment over and over again in disbelief and, truth be told, with a little bit of envy; how could a student from the middle of nowhere come up with something like this? He turned his head once again to the boy and began to have an idea.
Donald had noticed earlier that Jim’s stutter disappeared whenever he quoted his favorite poets out loud .

66.Dear John,
As the Dragon Boat Festival is coming, I would like to invite you to experience this traditional festival.
The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated every year on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month and it has about two thousand years of history. The festival is celebrated to honor the great poet Qu Yuan. On that day, people often get together with their family to eat Zongzi and other delicious food. In southern parts of China, people often have the Dragon Boat races.
If you love the Chinese dragon boat or Zongzi, you should consider coming to school. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
67.One possible version:
Donald had noticed earlier that Jim’s stutter disappeared whenever he quoted his favorite poets out loud. Now the teacher tried to do something most teachers would never consider doing today: he put Jim on the spot. So he said, “Jim, would you kindly come to the front of the class and read us what you’ve written? If the words really are yours, Jim, then prove it. Stand and recite them. Right now. Or admit that you stole them.”
The whole class turned their attention to Jim. Jim sprang to his feet and recited Ode to a grapefruit just as he had written it. There was anger in his voice, but what a voice it turned out to be: big and booming and clear as a bell. That was the day Donald Crouch unlocked one of the most powerful and familiar voices in the world. From then on, the world it seemed, was too small to contain a voice as big as Jim’s.
