The over 48,000 orange trees in Seville, Spain, not only fill the city’s air with the pleasant smell of orange blossoms in spring, but they also produce over 16,500 tons of fruit every winter. Though that makes the capital of southern Spain’s Andalusia region Europe’s top orange-producing city, the fruit is too sour to be consumed fresh. While some of the produce is used to make orange jam and an alcoholic drink, most of it ends up in Seville’s landfills (填埋场). However, that may change soon thanks to a clever idea to use the oranges to produce clean energy.
The trial programme is being launched by the city’s council and park department in cooperation with Emasesa, Seville’s water supply and sanitation (卫生) division. Juice from 38. 6 tons of oranges will be left to ferment (发酵) in a specialised facility. The methane (甲烷) released from the fermented liquid will be captured and used to drive a generator to produce clean power. The officials estimate the test run will produce about 1,500 kWh of energy – enough to run one of Emasesa’s water purification plants. To ensure there is no waste, the orange skins, peels, and flesh will be used as fertiliser.
“It’s not just about saving money. The oranges are a problem for the city, and we’re producing added value from waste,” said Benigno Lopez, head of Emasesa’s environmental department.
If successful, by 2023, the city hopes to recycle all the oranges and add the electricity produced back into its power transmission network. In trial runs, one ton of oranges produced 50 kWh of clean energy – enough to cover the daily electricity needs of five homes. The project team estimates that if all the fruit is recycled, it will produce enough energy to power as many as 73,000 residences.
“This project will help us to reach our targets for reducing emissions, energy self-sufficiency, and the circular economy,” Juan Espadas Cejas, mayor of Seville, said in the press conference announcing the trial programme.
24.What do we know about oranges in Seville from the first paragraph?
A.They are usually picked in spring.
B.They are mostly used to make jams and juice.
C.They are not recommended to be eaten fresh.
D.They make Seville the world’s top orange-producing city.
25.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.Different uses of Seville oranges.
B.Ways to produce power from juice.
C.An introduction to the trial programme.
D.Reasons for launching the trial programme.
26.What can we infer from the passage?
A.The energy produced will be used to purify water.
B.Seville hasn’t carried out the trial programme yet.
C.The electricity produced will go to Seville’s power plants.
D.14,600 tons of recycled oranges are needed to power 73,000 homes.
27.What is Juan Espadas Cejas’ attitude towards this project?
A.It is risky but beneficial.
B.It is helpful and worth trying.
C.It is crazy and cannot become a reality
D.It is impractical though possible in theory.

The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to the African ecosystem. Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(稀树草原)surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence of millions of other animals that live in its habitat.
It is the elephant's great desire for food that makes it a changer of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and undergrowth, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces both in deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.
Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed(有蹄的)plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.
What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of the forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.
28.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Disappearance of African elephants.
B.Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants.
C.The effect of African elephants on the ecosystem.
D.The eating habit of African elephants.
29.What does the underlined phrase ''setting the terms'' in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A.Fixing the time.
B.Worsening the state.
C.Improving the quality.
D.Deciding the conditions.
30.What can we know about the open spaces in the passage?
A.They result from the destruction of rain forests.
B.They are covered by few species of plants.
C.They are home to many endangered animals.
D.They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds.
31.The passage is developed mainly by _______.
A.showing the effect and then explaining the causes
B.pointing out similarities and differences
C.describing the changes in space order
D.giving examples to explain the reasons
D
Migraine is a disease that has a number of symptoms (症状), including head pain that can stick around from four hours to several days. While migraines can happen partly because of genetic (基因的) problems, attacks may happen by chance, set off by a cause in the environment.
One common cause is food, and some common dietary causes include alcohol, salt, sugar, chocolate, and caffeine. But there are many others, and scientists continue to identify more. Last year, for example, a Brazilian study found that watermelons brought on a headache within minutes in about 30 percent of the participants.
Some new researches are looking at which foods and what kinds of diets can prevent or lessen migraines. A new study published last year by a team of researchers found that a diet higher in fish oils rather than vegetable oils helped people ease their headaches. In the study, those on a diet lower in vegetable oil and higher in fatty fish had a 30 to 40 percent reduction in total headache hours per day, serious headache hours per day, and overall headache days per month compared to the control group.
Tanya Kamka had suffered weekly migraines for most of her life. Then, in her 50s, she joined the NIH diet experiment and increased her intake of fish. After only a few months, “I haven’t had a migraine, not even a mild one, in over two years.” she says.
For others, the solution comes from plants, not fish. A 60-year-old man joined a study on the food-migraine link and turned to a diet, which includes a lot of dark, leafy greens. After two months he was experiencing only one migraine a month instead of the 18 to 24 a month he’d suffered before.
Clearly, people with migraines react to food in very different ways. What works for one person may not work for another.
32.What do we know about migraine from paragraph 1?
A.It is related to sleep time. B.It never runs in the family.
C.It lasts for at least three hours. D.It can be caused by the environment.
33.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The length of migraine. B.Foods that lead to migraine.
C.The most common cause of migraine. D.A Brazilian study about migraine.
34.What can lessen migraines according to a new study published last year?
A.Fish oils. B.Vegetable oils.
C.All kinds of fat. D.Various Vegetables.
35.Which is the author’s opinion about the effect of food on migraines?
A.It varies from person to person. B.It can only stay for a short time.
C.It depends on the age of a patient. D.It is connected to how much one takes.

Once upon a time, there was a young athletic boy who is really hungry for success. For him, winning was everything and success was measured just by winning. He practised hard every day to win every race lying ahead of him.
One day, the boy was preparing himself for a running competition in his small village. A large crowd had gathered to witness the sporting event. A wise old man had travelled far to bear witness also. The race began. The boy with his determination, strength and power took the winning line and came to the first. The crowd were excited, cheering and waving at the boy. However, the wise man remained still and calm, expressing no excitement. The little boy, however, felt proud and important.
A second race was called and two new young fit challengers came forward to run with him. The race was started and sure enough the little boy came through and finished first. Once again the crowd was excited again, and cheered and waved at the boy. The wise man remained still and calm again, expressing no excitement. The little boy, however, felt proud and important.

My Happy Weekend
Last weekend, the volunteers from our school did something very meaningful.
In order to beautify our city and promote people’s awareness of environmental protection, we started a campaign to clean up the wastes around the Dragon Lake, which is a famous local attraction. We went into action the moment we arrived there by bus. We picked up the plastic bags and bottles in the bushes around the lake, and cleaned the benches and gym equipment with wet towels. Meanwhile, some of us handed out brochures to the passers-by, telling them about the benefits of garbage-sorting.
Tired as we were, we all felt happy, thinking that we had made contributions to our beautiful city.
67.
The race was started and the boy was the only finisher. The other two challengers left standing at the starting line. The little boy was ecstatic, so he raised his arms in delight. The crowd, however, was silent showing no sentiment toward the little boy. “What has happened? Why don’t the people join in my success?” he asked the wise old man.
“Race again,” replied the wise man, “this time finish together with all three of you.” The little boy thought a little, stood in the middle of the blind and the weak, and then took the two challengers. The little boy walked slowly to the finishing line and crossed it. The crowd were crazy and cheered and waved at the boy. The wise man smiled, nodding his head. The little boy felt proud and important. Lost in deep thought for a while, the boy thanked the wise old man for making him realize the real meaning of success. From then on, he could be regarded as a truly successful athletic.
