Making Better Magicians: The Vanishing Inc. Magic Fund
We believe in giving back. That is why we’ve founded The Vanishing Inc. Magic Fund. The funds are collected mainly from donations from people like you. We use these funds to bring about change in our industry. But we need your help.
We use our funds in mainly three ways:
MAGIC SCHOLARSHIPS (奖学金)
We offer scholarships to magic camps, shows and events. A week spent at Magic Camp is life-changing, yet some children who want to go will never be able to because their family can’t afford it. We want to change that. We’ve now given over 200 scholarships to young magicians, thanks to your help.
IMPROVING MAGIC EDUCATION
In order to reach the largest number of magicians possible, we’ve taken our charitable efforts to the Internet! Our ShareMagic video series features interesting magicians telling amazing stories. These videos range from inspirational to educational.
THE COLLEGE OF MAGIC
We have a connection with the College of Magic in Cape Town, South Africa. This college has created a safe place for children to learn magic, as well as public speaking skills, reading skills and other essential (最基本的) life skills. We supported the renovation (整修) of a theater, where these students do their shows and take classes, and more. We also recently built The Magic Lab, where the young magicians can learn how to create magic.
Every penny you donate goes directly to helping others. Thank you for considering a donation to our magic fund. Please click the link below to donate: Donate now

Two years ago, I completed a degree in Education at one of London’s finer universities. One night while having dinner with my friends, we began a discussion about what we wanted to do with our futures. My former flatmate had already found a position at a well-respected bank in London and advised us to be out there looking for jobs. Everybody around our table agreed except me and another girl, Nellie. Nellie and I were both at a loss as to what we wanted to do, but we were of one mind in that we did not want to immediately plunge (使陷入) ourselves into a nine-to-five job.
Nellie said she had a friend, named Susan, who had spent her gap year, the year between finishing university and beginning work, in Ghana. She had come back full of tales about her adventures and the wonderful people of the country. It sounded unusual and eye-opening to me, and I wanted to be a part of it.
Six months later, I was. I was offered a teaching position in an orphanage (孤儿院) in Ghana by a company called Filling the Gap. To be honest, on arriving in Ghana I had a few moments when I thought perhaps I was making the mistake of a lifetime. The orphanage was run-down and poorly managed. It seemed that there was nobody at the orphanage telling me what I was supposed to teach, who I was supposed to teach or with what materials I was supposed to teach.
After several days, the manager of the orphanage showed up and handed me a list with twelve names on it; these names belonged to the children to whom I was expected to offer all my wisdom. The children were eager to learn and seeing the look of pure joy on their faces came to mean the world to me. My whole gap year experience was nothing but positive. I can’t wait to get back to Ghana, and back to the amazing children I left behind in the orphanage.

B. They both worked for a well-respected bank.
C Neither of them liked to attend social gatherings.
D. Neither of them wanted to work immediately after graduation.

A. After becoming friends with Susan.
B. After hearing Susan’s story.
C. After seeing pictures of Ghana on the internet.
D. After receiving an invitation from an orphanage.
6. How did the author feel when she got to Ghana first?
A. Regretful. B. Hopeful. C. Nervous. D. Curious.

Jamie Goldfarb had finished reading the last bedtime book to her three-year-old son, Kai, when he told her he was hungry. The mum usually complied with such requests since Kai had difficulty feeding as a baby. But this time, as she headed downstairs to fetch a banana, she heard him murmur, “Now that’s how you get a fourth book.”
Goldfarb was astonished that her sweet child would tell her a lie, but experts would say that Kai was engaging in complicated cognitive reasoning (认知推理) in his successful attempt for extra storytime. And according to researchers, lying provides a rich workout for developing brains.
Though experts agree that there’s no particular area in the brain leading to telling lies, certain regions of the brain are engaged during the construction of a lie. The brain must also juggle (兼顾) emotions, memories, and knowledge about another person, as well as think about alternative paths the lie could take. “It’s really a whole network of complex interactions (互动),” says US psychologist Immordino-Yang. And that’s why the ability to lie develops over time, as a young brain develops.
Starting around two years old, a child is probably going to tell his first lie to keep from getting in trouble — and he probably won’t be very good at it. Older preschool-age children tend to try to lie as a way to make themselves look better. “They may claim they did something that they didn’t do because they want to get praise, or they exaggerate (夸张) because they want the parent to think, ‘Oh wow, you’re amazing,’” says Victoria Talwar, author of the book The Truth About Lying. As children enter elementary school, their more-developed brains can craft more complex lies.
Parents might feel disappointed when they catch their children being untruthful, but experts advise avoiding shaming them — or calling them liars. “That won’t necessarily promote the behaviour you want,” Talwar says. Instead, she suggests parents focus on the behaviour they’d like a child to exhibit and use language that encourages truth-telling. When the lie is more involved, experts recommend having a direct conversation about it.
8. What do the underlined words “complied with” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Let down. B. Relied on. C. Gave in to. D. Made use of.
9. What can we learn about telling lies from paragraph 3?
A. It is unavoidable in children’s life.
B. It is based on complex brain activities.
C. It is controlled by a specific area in the brain.
D. It is likely to hold back the development of brains.
10. What is the main reason why older preschool-age children lie?
A. To have fun. B. To protect others.
C. To win praise. D. To avoid getting in trouble.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Suggestions on solving children’s lies.
B. Possible harm to children if they are called liars.
C. Influence of children’s lies on parent-child relationships.
D. Relationships between children’s telling lies and their daily behaviour.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. C 11. A

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的““It’s really a whole network of complex interactions (互动),” says US psychologist Immordino-Yang. And that’s why the ability to lie develops over time, as a young brain develops.(“这真的是一个复杂互动的完整网络,”美国心理学家Immordino-Yang说。这就是为什么说谎的能力会随着时间的推移而发展,随着年轻大脑的发育)”可推知,撒谎建立在复杂的大脑活动基础之上。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Older preschool-age children tend to try to lie as a way to make themselves look better. “They may claim they did something that they didn’t do because they want to get praise, or they exaggerate (夸张) because they want the parent to think, ‘Oh wow, you’re amazing,’” says Victoria Talwar, author of the book The Truth About Lying.(大一点的学龄前儿童倾向于通过撒谎来使自己看起来更好。《谎言的真相》一书的作者Victoria Talwar说:“他们可能会说他们做了一些他们没有做的事情,因为他们想要得到表扬,或者他们夸大事实,因为他们想让父母觉得,‘哦,哇,你太棒了。’”)”可知,学龄前儿童撒谎主要是为了获得表扬。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Parents might feel disappointed when they catch their children being untruthful, but experts advise avoiding shaming them — or calling them liars. “That won’t necessarily promote the behaviour you want,” Talwar says. When the lie is more involved, experts recommend having a direct conversation about it.(当父母发现孩子不诚实时,他们可能会感到失望,但专家建议不要羞辱他们,也不要说他们是骗子。“这并不一定会促进你想要的行为,”塔尔瓦尔说。相反,她建议父母关注他们希望孩子表现出的行为,并使用鼓励说实话的语言。当谎言涉及更多的时候,专家建议进行一次直接的谈话)”可知,最后一段主要是关于如何应对孩子们撒谎的建议。故选A。

A new study shows frequent (频繁的) travelers are more satisfied with their lives than people who don’t travel at all. Chun-Chu Chen, an assistant professor from Washington State University, conducted a survey to find out whether or not travel and tourism experiences have a long-term effect on happiness and wellness.
His analysis (分析) shows individuals who pay more attention to tourism-related information and frequently discuss their travel plans with friends are more likely to go on vacations than those who aren’t always thinking about their next trip. More importantly, participants (参与者) in the survey who reported regularly traveling at least 75 miles away from home reported being about 7% happier when asked about their overall well-being than those who reported traveling very infrequently or not at all.
“While things like family life and friends play a bigger role in overall reports of well-being, travel experiences do appear to have a noticeable effect on self-reported life satisfaction,” Chen said. Previous studies have examined the health and wellness benefits of a single trip or vacation. Chen’s research takes these previous studies one step further by looking at the benefits of travel over the course of a year.
Participants in the study were asked about the importance of travel in their lives, how much time they spent looking into and planning future vacations, and how many trips they went on over a year. Out of the 500 survey participants, a little over half reported going on more than four pleasure trips a year. Only 7% of participants did not take any vacations.
Based on the results of the study, Chen said travel companies could start social media campaigns (运动), such as creating hashtags (话题标签) about the scientific benefits of vacation, to raise people’s interest in discussing their opinions about travel. “If you want to see someplace new, this research will hopefully encourage you to start planning your next vacation,” he said.
12. Which aspect of travel did Chen’s research focus on?
A. Its early history.
B. Its future development.
C. Its role in making people happy.
D. Its importance to the healthcare industry.
13. How is paragraph 2 developed?
A. By giving examples. B. By stating arguments.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By providing survey results.
14. What did participants need to do in Chen’s research?
A. Share travel information with their friends.
B. Answer questions about travel.
C. Take a trip with their family.
D. Prepare a travel plan.
15. What is Chen’s suggestion for travel companies?
A. Working together with tourism experts.
B. Offering vacation planning services.
C. Designing new travel programs.
D. Carrying out online activities.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. D

Last winter, Linda went through a very messy divorce and was very depressed. So she quit her job and left Los Angeles, where she encountered her ex-husband in college. She flew to Boston on the east coast of the US. Later, she settled in a new neighborhood in East Boston. However, shortly afterwards, the company where she worked went bankrupt (破产). Suffering a series of bitter blows, she fell ill, a severe case of flu. She had to stay at home for the whole week, feeling extremely bad and hopeless.
Early one morning, Linda lay in bed, feeling painful all over. Then all of a sudden, there was an upsetting knock on her front door. Struggling out of the bed, she dragged herself to the window. There, outside, she saw a young lady carefully holding some leaflets(传单)and a TV set model. She knew of a large TV set establishment nearby and assumed a message was about to be gently delivered. “This is the last thing I need today.” She muttered to herself and hesitantly opened the door.
Coughing bitterly, Linda stuck her head out. “Excuse me, madam…” the young lady said with a smile. “I’m sorry but I am not the slightest bit interested in any TV whatever.” Linda interrupted her impatiently. “As a matter of fact, I am feeling terribly awful.” “Is there anything I can do for you, madam?” the young lady asked with concern. “No thanks, just leave me alone.” Linda then shut the door in her face. The young lady politely turned and left in silence.

【答案】One possible version:
A few hours later, another knock. Linda glanced out of the window. To her surprise, at the door was the same lady, back again. Really annoyed this time, Linda opened the door. Before Linda could utter any word, the young lady handed her a warm pot, with a concerned look on the face. “I’m so sorry to have disturbed you earlier. I thought you may need this homemade chicken soup. Hope it might make you feel a little better. ”
Linda was surprised by this lovely action. After being refused so rudely, the lady still showed much kindness to her. A sense of shame creeping upon her heart, she could only force a smile with burning ears. But also, a warm current surged through her brain and body. Linda took the chicken soup gratefully, tears blurring her eyes and a lump in her throat. The lady wrapped Linda in her arms and patted her on the back. “It’s OK, dear. Everything will be fine.” Hearing these words, Linda felt a ray of bright sunshine lighting up her life.
