During a school trip to India, our group was scheduled to do home stays in a village. My host family had a young dog in training to be their guard dog. He was skinny and timid(胆小的),chained up in the hot gravel(砾石)yard without water, and no one was nice to him. I could tell he was going to have a terrible life, and my heart ached for him.
Since I had lost my husband to cancer just three months before, the sadness at seeing this dog attached to that greater sadness. When we left the village the next day, I could not stop thinking about Jimmy, the dog. Upon arriving home, I asked one of the travel arrangers to call the family who owned him,and ask if I could buy their dog. They were happy to sell him.Next he needed a rabies(狂犬病)shot, and 30 days, before being able to travel.
Three months after I had met Jimmy,I returned to India to pick him up. When I was being driven to the village it struck me that I had only met him for only a couple of hours, and that was three months ago. He might not remember me, or trust me. As we drove into the village and I walked into the yard, I saw him. He had grown quite a bit since our last meeting. With some worry I called his name,“Jimmy?”He turned around, with ears back, mouth smiling, tail wagging,he ran toward me and threw himself on the ground so that I could scratch(挠)his belly.
He was overjoyed, and so was I. His new life was a big transition(转变)for both of us at first, since he had never been in a car, or a house, and was afraid of men, afraid of sticks (the men would beat him with sticks),afraid of dogs, and only ate Indian food.Jimmy has been my dog now for six years, and not a day goes by without my loving Jimmy.

One of the most deeply-rooted myths in parenting is the so-called Mozart effect, which says that listening to music by the Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart can increase a child’s intelligence. The idea has been promoted by advocates(拥护者) for arts education and by retailers(零售商) who sell special recordings of Mozart’s works for infants(婴儿) and toddlers(学步的儿童). Some pregnant women have even gone so far as to play Mozart recordings on headphones pressed against their bellies(肚子).
So, if you have kids or you’re expecting to have them, how seriously should you take the Mozart effect? Will the child who has no access to Mozart s music when born live a life of mediocrity(平庸)? Relax. There is no scientific evidence that listening to Mozart improves children’s cognitive abilities.
The whole idea came from a small study done in 1993, which found that college students who listened to Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major (K 448) showed slight improvement in a test of spatial reasoning(空间推理). This finding was later turned into something unrealistic by the musician and entrepreneur(企业家) Don Campbell, who in 1997 published the best seller The Mozart Effect: Tapping the Power of Music to Heal the Body, Strengthen the Mind, and Unlock the Creative Spirit. Campbell’s claims about the amazing power of Mozart s music was repeated endlessly in the media and sped up the enthusiasm for Mozart-based enrichment activities.
Since then, scientists have examined the claim that Mozart improves intelligence and found no evidence for it. The original experiment with college students was reviewed in 1999, and the increase in the students’ spatial skills was found to be negligible. In 2007 the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research commissioned a team of experts to examine the scientific literature regarding Mozart and child development, and they found no reason to believe that it promoted intelligence.
28. Who might be in favor of Mozart effect?
A. People who are opposed to arts education.
B. Musicians who admire Mozart very much.
C. Businessmen who sell toys and infant food.
D. Pregnant women who want to make their children cleverer.
29. What sped up people’s behavior of listening to Mozart’s music?
A. People have benefited a lot from listening to Mozart s music.
B. Don Campbell successfully sold Mozart s music recordings.
C. The media repeatedly stressed the the amazing power of Mozart s music.
D. A small study showed Mozart’s music could make students much smarter.
30. What does the underlined word “negligible” in the last paragraph mean?
A. obvious. B. little. C. strong. D. sudden.
31. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce the Mozart effect.
B. To correct a misunderstanding in parenting.
C. To stress the importance of listening to music.
D. To show parents how to make children smarter.

The livestreaming and fast delivery industry have attracted so many young people that the industrial sector is short of manpower. “My advice is to encourage more young people to work in the factories and less in the express delivery sector,” Zhang Xinghai, a deputy to the National People’s Congress, China’s top legislature(立法机关), said during the ongoing NPC annual session.
Zhang wants more young people to work in the factories so that China’s manufacturing (制造业) sector continues to flourish.
Whatever job young people do is a matter of choice, but the manufacturing sector is facing a labor crunch (短缺) for too many people prefer jobs in other sectors.
A survey conducted by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security in the third quarter of 2021 found that of 100 jobs that were facing a manpower crunch, 58 were in the manufacturing sector. By 2025, the shortage in 10 key manufacturing industries could be as high as 30 million.
It is time some strong measures were taken to attract people back to the factories. This can be done by raising the salaries of factory workers.
According to a survey in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, the annual income of express delivery workers in the city is more than 100,000 yuan ($15,831). In contrast, the average monthly salary of those doing blue-collar jobs in Guangdong in 2020 was just 7,108 yuan, or about 84,000 yuan a year. That gap surely needs to be reduced.
Besides, the legal rights and interests of those doing blue-collar jobs need to be better protected. Express delivery workers can decide when they want to work, but factory workers have to work whenever the factory demands.
Therefore, the authorities should protect factory workers’ rights to weekends, 8-hour working schedules and paid leave.
Also, the promotion and salary growth structure of factory workers must be clearly defined. In a word, to attract young people back to the factories, it is necessary to make blue-collar jobs more attractive.
32.What can we infer from Zhang Xinghai’s words?
A.The future of the express delivery sector is hopeless.
B.Working in factories in China are attractive to young people.
C.Most young people are unwilling to work in the manufacturing sector.
D.Working as a delivery man is quite easy for young people.
33.What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A.A lot of jobs in China are facing a labor crunch.
B.Employment rate in China will be dramatically increased by 2025.
C.There are 10 manufacturing industries facing manpower shortage in total.
D.The industrial sector is facing a severe labor shortage.
34.Which is NOT the reason for manpower shortage in factories?
A.Flexible working hours. B.Lower incomes.
C.Undefined promotion structure. D.Unprotected legal rights.
35.What is the author’s attitude towards the current situation of manufacturing industry?
A.Indifferent. B.Concerned. C.Unclear. D.Neutral.

第二节(满分25分)

My sister Megan always felt a little afraid while babysitting at the Quinns'house. It was set back from the road by a long, winding driveway, and theyard was filled with so many pine trees that she couldn't see any of theneighbors' lights.
On this particular night, the snow was falling heavily outside. The girlsbegged her to read them their favorite story, and afterward they fell asleep.Megan settled on the sofa to watch an old movie on television.
Around ten o'clock, a loud knock on the door surprised her. Megan spiedthrough the peephole and saw a middle-aged man standing in the entryway.
“Who is it?”she asked.
“Your brother Ben.”
Megan realized the man had mistaken her for his sister. She replied,“MrsQuinn can't come to the door right now." She thought of our mother's warning:Never open the door for a stranger while you're babysitting.
"The truth is I'm babysitting,"she said through the screen. The wordswere out of her mouth before she remembered our mother's second warning:Don't advertise that you're alone. Megan quickly added, "Mrs Quinn will behome soon."
“It's awfully cold out here. Can I wait inside?" the man asked.
Megan hesitated. “Couldn't you come back in a little while?”
"I drove all the way from Newport. I don't have anywhere else to go,”theman smiled. “Please let me in. I promise I won't bother you."
"Mrs Quinn left a number for me to contact her," Megan said."I'll call her and see what she says."
The smile vanished from the man's face. "You're going to leave me outside to freeze to death in the meantime? Wait until she finds out you wouldn't let me in! You'll be in so much trouble!" With the words he left.
Megan trembled. Maybe it was true. Maybe she would get in trouble. What if Mrs Quinn asked her why she didn't let her brother in? How could Megan explain that he was downright rude? Would Mrs Quinn think she was not mature enough to babysit? Maybe she'd never call her again.
