One day, Gina received a smartphone. But she didn’t know how to use it. So Gina went to her daughter’s house to ask her grandson, Josh, for help.
When seeing Josh, Gina asked him for help. “Sorry Grandma. I have to leave for baseball now,” Josh answered from the sofa, his eyes locked on his own phone. Then he stood up, took his baseball bag, and left. Over the next few days, Gina went to see Josh several times. However, Josh always had something to do, giving excuses such as going to the movies.
Gina finally understood Josh actually didn’t want to help her. She stopped asking him. She turned to some friends for help. Before long, she learned how to use her phone to read stories, communicate with friends, etc.
Later, on a Monday evening, Gina visited her daughter, Oona. They happily talked when Josh was making dinner. Suddenly, they heard Josh crying out. Oona rushed towards the kitchen. Gina followed and found Josh’s hands burned by hot water by accident. “Mom, I think we need to go to the hospital,” Oona said. “Yes, I’ll drive,” Gina said.
At last, the doctor said Josh would be fine after a few days, but his hands would be bandaged (用绷带包扎). Josh was also advised not to go to school for some days so he could rest and get better soon. Oona asked Josh’s best friend to tell him his homework.
On Wednesday, Josh was alone at home. His grandma came to help make lunch for him, because he couldn’t use his hands. While Gina was cooking, Josh wanted to check his homework. His friend had sent his homework assignment to his phone through emails and text messages. But Josh couldn’t operate his phone. He realized he had to ask his grandma to help him out.
And he suddenly remembered he had refused to help his grandma when she asked for help with her phone. He was regretful and afraid she wouldn’t help him. But he decided to have a try.

16-year-old Tim looked up to his father Roger, who worked as a firefighter. While the teenager always talked about his dream of joining the fire department, the man didn’t believe the boy was cut out to be a firefighter because Tim left the usual stereotype (刻板形象) of a bookworm: a straight-A student who wore large glasses, and was physically weak.
It was a typical school day. Tim’s math teacher announced their weekly test results, and the boy was delighted to learn that he had scored the highest mark. His friend Christine however, was upset because she got a bad grade.
Seeing her sit in a corner with her head resting on the table, he approached her and said, “Hey, Christine I know you got a bad grade, but I can teach you these topics. You’ll grasp it in no time, I’m sure. And you can improve your grade next week. What do you say?” “That’s so sweet of you, Tim! Let’s meet at my house after school today,” Christine saidwith a smile. “Sure!” Tim replied.
Christine lived on the outskirts (郊区) of town. It took Tim, who passed his driving test recently, half an hour to drive there. Once his car neared Christine’s estate, he was shocked to see a blazing (熊熊燃烧的) fire. Upon driving closer, he realized her house was on fire. Frightened, he quickly picked up his phone and called 911.
Then, Tim took off bis shir, grabbed a bottle of water from his car, and poured it on the shirt. He wrapped the wet shirt around his face, as he had seen in movies, and entered the house. He started climbing towards the hallway window of Christine’s bedroom.
Tim found a baseball bat in the hall. It took him five whole minutes to swing it hard enough to break the window. Once the glass was broken, he rushed towards Christine’s room. He couldn’t see much because of the thick black smoke floating in the air, but he managed to locale her. She was lying unconscious (昏迷的) on her bed after breathing in the smoke.

Wrinkles of confusion rippled across Holly’s forehead as she unwrapped the gift from her best friend, Susan. “I…I thought you could use it for something.” Susan’s stammered (结巴的) explanation did nothing to help us understand why a twelve-by-eighteen-inch dark blue carpet rag was being presented as a birthday gift.
My heart went out to my daughter. The murmured “thanks” was barely hearable and she laid the piece of carpet on the kitchen counter, and the two girls headed outside to play with the family dogs.
The next morning, I carried a bag of kitchen rubbish outside. My heart hurt as I lifted the lid of the trash can and saw Susan’s carpet lying among the other discarded items. Hesitating only a moment, I reached in and took it from amid the junk. After a light brushing, I brought it into the house and put it in the hall closet.
Without mentioning Susan’s name for nearly three weeks, Holly came home with an invitation of Susan’s birthday. Although her voice carried a so-what attitude, I sensed she was pleased by the invitation. The following day, I drove Holly to Susan’s home. At the end of the road, we saw a tall woman wearing a shapeless sweater over navy blue pants standing in the doorway to greet us as we approached the small farmhouse. It must be Susan’s mom. “ Excuse the mess,” she apologized, holding the door open while we threaded our way through stuff that seemed to be everywhere. Then, Susan’s mom waved a hand toward the kitchen counter, which was barely visible through the mix of medicines. “This is my medicine cabinet, ” she explained.
Susan led us through the house. It seemed to be alive with four-legged fur kittens roaming underfoot and sprawling across the backs of the dirty sofa and chairs. She proudly showed us her room, which was decorated with used furnishings. After eating a simple homemade birthday cake, we offered our thanks for the visit and said goodbye.

It was the first week of Lily’s middle school. The bell’s ringing brought her out of her daydreaming. She nervously gathered her books, preparing to reach another classroom for the next new class.
Lily followed the other kids and rushed into the hallway. Others walked in groups, chatted, and laughed, using the break to socialize. Lily, instead, walked alone along the wall of the hallway, with her head down. She was a shy girl, afraid to speak in front of other kids, and didn’t think others would like her.
Lily finally sat in Mr. Johnson’s Language Arts class nervously. “Welcome to Language Arts,” said Mr. Johnson. He told jokes as he talked about English. Lily forgot to daydream and laughed along with the rest of the class. “We’ll have some fun with language,” he said. “Just wait and see.”
Fun was far beyond what Lily desired. She just wanted to be like other kids—running with friends in the hallway, laughing and joking between classes. Reminded of her pimply (长粉刺的) face, she felt hopeless and disappointed.
“Take out a piece of paper,” the teacher continued, when pointing at words on the blackboard. “Write for the next thirty minutes on this topic.” Lily began writing crazily as idea after idea fought for recognition in her head. The final result was a short story about a beautiful beach house. As she wrote, she could smell the salty air, hear the crashing waves and feel the pull of the sand beneath her feet. For just a moment, she forgot where she was. She was lost in the story.
“OK, pass your papers forward,” said the teacher. “Let’s see what we have.” For the rest of the class time, the teacher read each individual work aloud. Lily originally thought it would be awkward. However, she was gradually attracted by the excitement in the teacher’s voice. “He’s actually enjoying this,” she thought. When the class would be soon over, there were still fifteen students’ papers not read, including Lily’s paper. Then, Mr. Johnson announced his decision, asking these students to read their work themselves in front of the class next class.

We call Talent Show the biggest stage in our country. I stood on that huge stage, with my throat dry. As I stared at the audience, I knew this moment could change my life forever. When judges asked my name and I tried to speak, nothing came out. The crowd fell silent, waiting for the words to come. Finally I stuttered(结巴地说) my name and my age. “As you can tell,” I said, “I have a speech disorder…”
I’d love to sing and had already signed up for the school talent show in fourth grade when I started stuttering.Fortunately, most of the kids at my school were kind, and I was rarely made fun of. I tried speech therapy too, but it didn’t help. I feared to sing in the school talent show. Therefore, I decided to practice at home. To my surprise, the words came smoothly when I sang. And then I decided to learn to play the guitar, which was given as a birthday gift by my father.
One afternoon, I walked into the basement, where I kept my musical equipment. My eyes lit on the guitar. I picked it up and started playing. I opened my mouth, and the words came flooding out. Then I wrote a song called I Will Trust, telling the pain IP’d experienced. The next day, I filmed a video of performing the song and posted it online. Hundreds of strangers left comments that I had uplifted them with my music. Ever since, I’ve been writing songs.
Last year, I started college and majored in music production. When I saw Talent Show audition(试唱)announcement pop up on my computer, I wanted to have a try. Several months later, I was standing on that stage, trying to calm my nerves as I introduced myself, “I have a speech impediment.” I said, “It was definitely something that caused me to…” I took a long pause to find the words. “…to hide. But I found that I don’t stutter when I sing.”

Middle school is a rough period of life for many of us. And it can feel like the end of the world if you’re the target of school’s mean girls.
Jennifer knew this feeling all too well. When she was in middle school, she was often teased by other kids. Her classmates made fun of her social awkwardness and unfashionable clothes. Then the bullying escalated (升级) to a whole new level in seventh grade when three girls started targeting Jennifer almost every day.
“They would wait for me in the hallway at the end of class so that they could start picking on (欺负) me right away.” Jennifer said. “And they would corner me in this area of the school called ‘the draw off ’ where they would kind of form a ring around me and insult me.”
Jennifer didn’t know what to do to defend herself. So, she’d just repeat back what the girls said to her.
The rest of the school year went on like this. Jennifer’s grades suffered. During the summer between seventh and eighth grade, the ringleader of the group that had targeted her transferred to another school. “I did hold out some hope that this might mean that eighth grade could be different,” Jennifer said.
That hope lasted just a few days into the new school year when Jennifer discovered that the group had a new ringleader—Anna, who had just moved to Jennifer’s school. The bullying quickly resumed (重新开始), and it seemed like eighth grade would be much like seventh.
But about six weeks into the school year, something happened. Jennifer was in the locker room, and she was by herself because she had waited for everyone else to leave so she could change in private. Just then, she heard a voice. It was Anna.

Roses are red, violets are blue,
Sugar is sweet, and so are you.
Those words were what one of my new classmates wrote to me in an autograph book (签名簿) when I moved with my family to a new country, feeling extremely lonely.
Having settled in a completely unfamiliar place, my father and mother worked day and night to provide for the family, though we were still in debt. I spoke a little English and was sent to a public school. Being ten years old, I was placed in the fourth grade. Some of the children in the class tried to be friendly but I didn’t have time to hang around with them after my lessons because I had to help with the housework and look after my little brothers and sisters.
At the end of the school year all the kids were excited about going to camp, a concept that was quite foreign to me. Also foreign to me were some of the customs the children had. The strangest one was the “autograph book”! It was a blank book, about four by six inches, with pages in different colors. My schoolmates exchanged their autograph books with each other and wrote silly messages on the pages. These messages made no sense to me: “Yours till the kitchen sinks.” “Yours till the horse flies.” “Yours till Niagara falls.”(永远属于你) Teachers and older relatives wrote more serious and practical words like a prayer or wish—I remember something about a “wise owl living in a tree” (少说话多做事的人).
The boy whose desk was next to mine asked me to write a few words in his autograph book. I didn’t know what to say, so I just signed my name. Then he asked if he could write in my autograph book. I explained I didn’t have one, embarrassed and upset.

Jack lived in a small village surrounded by forests and he had always been fascinated by animals and often spent his free time wandering around the woods, observing them.
One day, while wandering through the forest, Jack chanced upon a group of deer eating grass peacefully in a clearing (空地). As he approached them, they rushed away, frightened by his presence. Jack felt sad that the animals were afraid of him, and he decided to change it.
Over the next few weeks, Jack visited the clearing every day, sitting quietly and patiently, observing the deer from a distance. Slowly but surely, the deer grew accustomed to his presence and started to approach him and allow him to pet them. Jack was thrilled that he had gained their trust.
Inspired by his success, Jack started to explore the forest more and more, meeting different animals along the way. He encountered a family of rabbits, a pack of wolves, and even a group of bears. Although he was initially scared of the bears, he soon realized that they were just as curious about him as he was about them.
Jack started to bring food for the animals, and they started to see him as a friend. He would sit with them for hours, watching them play and interact with each other. He learned so much about their behavior and habits, and he felt a deep connection with them.
One day, while he was sitting with the rabbits, Jack heard a loud noise in the bushes. He was afraid that it might be a predator (捕食者), but to his surprise, a small fox emerged from the bushes. The fox was struggling to walk, and Jack could see that it was injured.
Without hesitation, Jack approached the fox slowly, trying not to scare it. He saw that the fox had a thorn (刺) stuck in its paw, and it was in a lot of pain. Jack knew he had to help the fox, but he didn’t want to hurt it further.

Postcards From The World
While the sun washed over the grass of my grandmother’s front garden, I sunk into the familiarity of one of her armchairs. Life, as I knew it, had changed. My beloved grandmother, my nanny, a stand-in parent in the absence of my father, had cancer. It was terminal, and could never be cured.
As she watched Getaway on television, she remarked to me that she’d never left Australia and that now she never would. I swallowed the sadness that came with knowing that chapters of her life were to be left unwritten.
At work, feeling helpless, I wiped tables and took orders and thought. HARD! The Saturday afternoon lunch rush was not enough to lull me from my thoughts. Wracked with grief, I pondered the power of Facebook and the collective strength of human empathy. I raced from the end of my shift to ask strangers on the internet for help.
“My Nanny Del has cancer. It’s terminal and she will never see the world. Please send her postcards so she can see the world from her armchair. I can offer nothing but gratitude.”
I resolved not to breathe a word of this; should nothing come, I couldn’t bear to carry her disappointment along with my own. Should something wander into our humble little letterbox, I would consider it a blessing and embrace it like I embraced her little, shrinking frame.
Days turned to weeks and Nanny’s health worsened rapidly in the early months of 2018. Life took me through my full-time study, babysitting and waiting tables, along with the responsibility of caring for a grandparent who was too sick to care for herself. As I helped Nanny in the early hours of those mornings, she would chat to me, sometimes joys, other times, sorrows. Whatever she shared became precious.

“Grandma,” he finally said, standing before the kitchen. Gina turned around, looking at him expectantly. “Can you check my emails?” Josh asked. “Oh,” Gina hesitated. Josh lowered his head, guessing she’d refuse. But Gina cleaned her hands and walked towards him, smiling, “Sure. You need to get your homework, right? Let me see.” Gina picked up Josh’s phone and started searching around. She went to his email app and downloaded everything he needed to complete his homework.
Then, Gina sent Josh’s homework assignment to his computer. Before long, they started working together to complete Josh’s homework. They ate sandwiches during the process, and their afternoon passed rapidly. When they were done, Josh looked at his grandma regretfully. He thanked her and then apologized for his previous behavior. Gina looked at him with love, patted his head and forgave him. After that day, Josh never refused when she asked for help. He learned to respect and love his grandma, instead of being selfish.

3.Holly sat quietly in the car on the way home. Stealing a glance, I noticed her back was straight. Her head and shoulders were thrust forward as if willing the car to move faster. No sooner had we come to a stop in the driveway than she pushed open the car door and walked purposefully toward the side gate. Curious, I shifted into park and followed. A lump caught in my throat as I observed my daughter standing next to the trash can peering inside. Her shoulders sank as she replaced the lid and dragged herself into the house.
After pulling the car into the garage, I went inside and headed for the hall closet. By this time, Holly was sitting at the kitchen table staring out the window as if her heart were stolen. “Is this what you were looking for?” I placed the piece of carpet on the table in front of her. She jumped from the chair with astonishment. “Thanks, Mom.” A tear or two slipped from her eyes and splashed onto the dark blue rag that, as if by magic, had become the most precious birthday present in the whole world.

A week later, the bell rang and the Language Arts class began again. Lily was nervous with her head down. After other students finished reading the papers one by one, finally, it was Lily’s turn. Frozen with fear, Lily stood in front of the class, with her hands holding her paper, shaking. Seeing it, Mr. Johnson told a funny joke, which made all laugh. Feeling more relaxed, Lily began reading. She was so focused that she felt she was alone. She didn’t notice that her story soon attracted all her classmates who sat up straight, without any chatting. They were lost in her fantastic story.
After Lily finished her reading, the clapping from her classmates continued for a long time. Lily was shocked. When she raised her head, she found everyone staring at her excitedly. Lily finally smiled. She found everyone in the class responded to her story positively. After that class, Lily slowly lifted her head while walking. Later, she kept writing. And she began speaking in front of people and enjoyed it. A braver and more confident girl appeared. And she was grateful to Mr. Johnson who believed in every student.

Then I began to sing a new song I’d just written. I tried to focus on the music, instead of the eyes on me. And just as I’d said, there was no stutter at all. When I finished, the whole crowd was on its feet, and so were the judges. I couldn’t hold back my tears when the judges thought highly of my beautiful voice. For my second performance, I sang another original song. I placed fifth in my round of the finals, with which I was really satisfied.
My performance on Talent Show had a deep influence on me. Now, I’m more comfortable putting myself out there, taking the risk that I might get denied. I continue to have difficulty speaking, yet I’m able to speak fluently through my music. I still find myself worrying about the future I can’t control, but I know that I can go as far as possible. I really feel grateful for the hard times I’ve been through and the struggles I’ve endured, which are what make me who I am.

We’re going to be in this school together for another year, and I don’t want things to keep going this way.” Jennifer was surprised. She had expected Anna to continue the bullying rather than her making amends. But she also knew that she wanted things to change. She didn’t want to spend another year being bullied and feeling like an outsider. “I’m looking forward to changes,” Jennifer murmured. “Good,” Anna said. “I am too.”
After that moment in the locker room, Jennifer’s whole experience of school changed. Over the next few weeks, Anna and Jennifer slowly started to relieve the relationship. It wasn’t easy, for they still had their differences, but they both made efforts to be kind to each other. Slowly but surely, the rest of the group followed their leader. 7.That night when I went to bed, I felt sorry for myself. I felt like I didn’t belong. Our family had trouble finding money for rent, food, and clothes in the new country—the idea of writing silly messages on blank pages seemed useless. Yet for a moment, I wanted to be included—I wanted to go to camp. I wanted an autograph book. Thinking about my uncertain future life in this new place and wondering how things would work out for my family, I sighed.
The next day, the boy sitting beside me whispered he wanted to give me something at break. During break, he handed me a small box with a big smile, inside which was a book with multicolored pages—an autograph book-—just like everyone else’s. I turned the pages. Then, in the middle of the autograph book I saw some writing: Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, and so are you. Welcome to your new country. You are going to like it here. Your friend Sam. I turned the other pages—blue, pink, yellow… thinking what my future held in store may change for the better and things might work out for my family.

Tom’s friendship with the animals of the forest was the talk of the village. People would often see him wandering around with a pack of wolves or sitting with a family of bears. They were amazed by his ability to befriend animals that were supposed to be wild and dangerous.
As he grew older, Jack’s love for animals grew stronger. He realized that animals were not just pets or creatures to be hunted, but they were his friends and companions. He started volunteering at an animal shelter, where he would help care for injured and abandoned animals. He also worked with local conservation groups to protect the forests and wildlife in his area. Jack’s love for animals had brought him a sense of purpose and fulfillment that he had never experienced before. He knew that he had made a difference in the lives of many animals, and he was grateful for the friendship and companionship of his animal friends.

9.One afternoon, finally, a postcard from the United States arrived in our letterbox. The simple postcard from America to our sleepy little seaside town in Australia was to me a beacon of light. I held it tight in my hands, read and re-read the words scrawled across the back: Nanny Del, thinking of you in Michigan, USA... From that day, our letterbox became the destination for postcards from all over the world. Our letterbox became a hotel, accommodating travel-weary cards from everywhere: India, Italy, China, and Japan. The cards were love and from all corners of the globe. I sat next to my Nanny, reading the cards to her. Tears of happiness mixed with grief fell onto those postcards.
In the months that followed, her living room became a departure hall and our flights departed daily. Her hospital bed became an airport lounge, where we researched and planned our next departure. We visited Milan and cruised the Japanese Sca before hopping over to Taiwan. We travelled the entirety of the United States. Nanny hung out for every visit from the postman, eagerly awaiting news of her next departure.” I just can’t believe strangers did this for a little old lady they’ve never met” became a sentiment she murmured many times. I reached out to the senders; reminding them that they’d impacted strangers in a way they’d perhaps never know. Our travels took us far and wide. Cancer could not stop us.
