Saturday afternoon came as usual, so did my football class. It couldn’t be more discouraging.
I didn’t like Saturdays! Even though it was a holiday for most children, it was not for me because I needed to go to the football club. Many kids loved sports, but I was not one of them. I would rather stay at home and read.
I didn’t like running at all, so I was a bad player in the team. The coach was fed up with me and my teammates sometimes laughed at me. I had no idea how to play football. Usually, after practice my teammates would ask me to stay out of the game and I would just nod.
Last Thursday, the coach told us that we would be competing with some other team in a month and many people would come to watch the game. Our opponents were the last winner and I froze at the thought of the embarrassment I would face if the team lost because of me. So I decided to practice hard for the match and I went to practice every single day in case I had to play.
A month later, when the game day came, my teammates were reluctant (不愿意的) to take me in the team, and I also wished to stay away from the ground as well. But as luck would have it, they were short of one player and had no choice but to take me in the team.
Our team was named the Big Blues. There was a great cheer on our arrival in the field. I got very nervous. The game started and within two minutes, I got a blue card. By the time I was allowed back, the score was two goals for each team and the next goal would decide the winning team.

2.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Recently I got a job. It was exactly what I needed. The only challenge was that child care was really expensive in the UK, So I signed up with a nursery for my baby and paid over £1,300 for just one month. I signed all the necessary documents, among which stated that they had a no refund (退款) policy, so in case you missed some days, the money was not refunded regardless of the reason.
My baby was there for three days and got ill. I was forced to leave work to care for him. I was so worried as I had just started the job, but I had to take a few days off. By Friday he was so sick that he couldn’t eat, drink or walk, and I was terribly anxious. I had tests done only to find out that he had tested positive for COVID-19. We then had to self-isolate (自我隔离) for ten days. As the ten days were coming to an end, I got the virus from him and I tested positive, just as his repeated test results came back negative. So I had to self-isolate with him again for another ten days.
As 20 days had passed, the month was over and it was in December. The rest of the year was holidays and the nursery was not open during the holidays.
Just like that, I had lost £1,300 in three days and I was at home, not working. It meant that I didn’t earn anything either. I was so annoyed at first as it did not seem fair at all, given that my baby had gotten COVID-19 at the nursery. I called Ms Clark, who runs the nursery, and she told me they have a no refund policy which I had signed. I felt so helpless at that moment.

3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mama and Papa were like most parents. They wanted the best for their kids. Jeff and Jenna were like most kids. They wanted the best for themselves-the best place in front of the TV, the biggest piece of cake and the most candies.
One night, when the noisy kids were sound asleep, Mama lay awake worrying. She sighed a big sigh, thinking how to teach Jeff and Jenna to mend their selfish ways. Lecturing didn’t work.
As Mama lay there, she thought about how kids learn. Kids learn by doing. They learn to walk by walking. That’s the answer, thought Mama. The kids will learn to help others by helping others. But questions of who, when, and where went unanswered as she drifted off to sleep.
To her pleasure, those questions were soon answered. The next day, they happened to meet Mrs. Marie, the elderly widow who lived just down the road, at the checkout line at the supermarket.
Mama asked the kids to say hello to Mrs. Marie, about whom the kids were a little nervous. She was really old and kind of bent over. And there was that crooked cane she used when she walked. But the real reason they were nervous about her was that two days ago their ball had gone into her yard and knocked over some flowers in the garden and broke the glasses of the attic. They had never apologized.
When Mama and the kids were loading their groceries into the car, Mrs. Marie came out of the supermarket pushing her little collapsible shopping cart.
“Where are you going?” called Mama.
“To the bus stop,” she said, “The bus goes right by my house.” “So does our car,” said Mama.

A Sailor’s Christmas Gift
Last year at Christmas time my wife, three boys and I were in France on our way from Paris to Nice. For five miserable days everything had gone wrong. Our hotels were tourist traps; our rented car broke down; we were all restless and annoyed in the crowded car. On Christmas Eve, when we checked into a dark and dirty hotel in Nice, there was no Christmas spirit in our hearts. It was raining and cold when we went out to eat.
We found a drab (饭馆) little shoddily decorated for the holidays. It smelled oily. Only five tables in the restaurant were occupied. There were two families and an American sailor, by himself. In the corner, a piano player listlessly played Christmas music. I was too stubborn and too tired and miserable to leave. I looked around and noticed that the other customers were eating in stony silence. The only person who seemed happy was the American sailor. While eating he was writing a letter, and a half-smile lighted his face. My wife ordered our meal in French. The waiter brought us the wrong thing, and I scolded my wife for being stupid. She began to cry. The boys defended her, and I felt even worse. All of us here were overwhelmed by an unpleasant blast of cold air.
Through the front door came an old French flower woman, who wore a shabby dripping overcoat and moved along slowly. “Flowers, monsieur? Only one franc.” No one bought any. Wearily she sat down at a table between the sailor and us. To the waiter she said, “A bowl of soup. I haven’t sold a flower all afternoon.” To the piano player she said hoarsely, “Can you imagine, Joseph, soup on Christmas Eve?” He pointed to his empty tip plate. The young sailor finished his meal and got up to leave.

“My mum is my favorite superhero, ”he continued.“Some might laugh at me for saying something like that.but my mum is the most hard-working person in the world. She raised me and my two brothers alone, and we have never lacked anything. Our family is the most important to her.”
Sebastian wet his lips before he continued reading.“My mum promised to get us a house by the end of the year.We live in a trailer—a vehicle without an engine. It’s a little small with three boys.I don’t know if my mum can keep her promise.because she had an accident recently, so I’m helping out, too.
“How are you helping?” a teen girl asked.
“Keep quiet, everyone.Let Sebastian finish reading,” Mrs.Evans gently scolded the class.
“My mum is a street sweeper for the city, but she’s been staying home, trying to get better. She’s on paid sick leave.Someone has to fill in for her.So I went to her boss and started doing her job.I rake(耙) the leaves outside into piles mostly because they ‘re falling so often now.But I realized how hard it was and that a real superhero doesn’t wear a cape (斗篷)or go on adventures.A real hero takes care of his family, and I hope to grow up and be half the hero my mum is.Thank you.”
Then came a moment of silence After that, the rest of the class read their essays too, and Sebastian started to feel a bit silly because they all talked about superheroes like Iron Man Thor, and Wonder Woman. He was the only one who had written about a real person.

6.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Where were you when you first heard My Heart Will Go On? You know that love song that took over the world in the late 1990s, the one that ruled radios and television screens. that trilled through the air when you rang your neighbour’s doorbell, or rang out of a Valentine’s Day musical card—the song we love to hate now because it is almost shameful to admit how much we listened to it in 1998. I’m no fan of the song, but I’ll tell you one thing—it saved my life.
I remember where I was when I heard the song,13 years old, only a few weeks away from receiving my class eight report card. When my mother and 1 went to collect it from school, the skies were grey. On the left side of the report card was the failure of my choosing—Maths, Physics and Chemistry—on the bottom of the right hand side it said Not Promoted(不升级) in red ink. My mother, an English teacher in another Calcutta school, was too proud to beg the principal for the three marks I needed in Chemis-try to be promoted to class nine. I walked along, thinking of the last song 1 was watching on MTV before we left for school. It was Dion’s all knowing hit My Heart Will Go On: “You have come to show you, go on….”
I was a fool to have ever thought that I could get away with not studying and watching MTV for hours on end. Till class eight, my father had refused to get a cable connection on the grounds that my brother and I would forever be glued to the screen, not study and fail the exams. The year after he gave in to his desire to watch late night football, I proved him right. I failed class eight because I was in love with the Backstreet Boys and would watch MTV all the time so that I wouldn’t miss a single video. That’s the whole truth and the band will never know the price I paid for my love.

7.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My name is Maeli. I am so lucky, because I have Lizzy Jo. She is my cousin and my friend! We are close. We talk about everything from our dreams, our sad things to the things we value most such as her beautiful bracelets (手链) and my beads (有孔的珠子).
Yesterday our teacher brought out a big box just before the last bell rang. “I have a little gift for each of you,” she said. Then she gave each of us a perfect popcorn ball. Each popcorn ball was in clear bag that was tied with a ribbon (丝带). Just that little ribbon made the gift look so fancy! Sometimes, it’s the tiny details that make things special.
I happen to have a great appreciation for popcorn balls, so I was pleased. Lizzy Jo and I rode the bus home. The moment I was off the bus, I untied the ribbon and put it into my pocket. Then I took the popcorn ball out of the plastic bag. I didn’t even stop walking. Unfortunately, my feet were in a big hurry to get home, and sometimes when feet are in a hurry, they trip.
My feet tripped. I fell. And my perfect popcorn ball dropped right into a dirty puddle (水坑). I was okay, but my popcorn ball wasn’t. Have you ever seen a perfect popcorn ball in a dirty puddle? It isn’t something that you want to take a photo of and frame and keep forever.
I looked at my popcorn ball. That moment definitely was NOT the time to use the two second rule. Last week at my grandma’s house I used the two second rule. I accidentally dropped my cookie on her floor. I picked it up REALLY fast, and I admit that I ate that cookie. But this was a very different situation. This involved a puddle.

8.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It bothered Ben every time he went through the kitchen. It was that little metal container on the shelf above Martha’s cook stove. He probably would not have noticed it so much if Martha had not repeatedly told him never to touch it. The reason was that it contained a “secret herb” from her mother, and since she had no way of ever refilling the container, she was concerned that if Ben or anyone else ever picked it up and looked inside, they might accidentally drop it and spill its valuable contents.
The container was so old that much of its original red and gold floral(花纹的) colors had faded. Not only Martha’s fingers had gripped it there, but her mother’s and her grandmother’s had, too. Martha didn’t know for sure, but she felt that perhaps even her great-grand-mother had used this same container and its “secret herb”. All Ben knew for sure was that shortly after he’d married Martha, her mother had brought the container to Martha and told her to make the same loving use of its contents as she had.
Whatever was in that container, it sure worked, for Ben felt Martha was the best cook in the world. Anyone who ever ate in their house greatly praised Martha’s cooking.
But why wouldn’t she let Ben touch that little container? It was so fine whenever Martha sprinkled (撒) it over the food she was preparing. She obviously had to use very little of it because there was no way of refilling the container.
Ben became increasingly eager to look into that container just once, but never brought himself to do so.
Then one day Martha became ill. Ben took her to the hospital, where they kept her overnight. When he returned home, he felt extremely lonely. Martha had never been gone overnight before. When it neared supper time, he wandered into the kitchen to see what might be in the refrigerator. Then the container on the shelf immediately came into view. He quickly looked away, but his curiosity drew him back.

9.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Jordi! Wake up!” Father’s voice called from the hallway, and I sat up quickly. The day finally came! The day that I would be a castellar—a tower builder. Mama had breakfast ready. “Are you prepared for your moment of fame?” Papa asked in excitement. My throat was suddenly very dry, and the bread got stuck as I swallowed. Taking a big swig of juice, I put on a smile. “I'm ready” I would do well. I wanted to make him proud.
Here in the eastern part of Spain, casteller groups were very popular. My city hosted the competition this year. Before that, I’d watched my parents compete. But never before had I been part of the tower. It was so high. And it sometimes fell. I was hesitant to be up there. But for the past year, I had been practicing the climb. I was twelve, and I must not be a coward (胆小鬼). So for the first time in a competition, I would help build the tower!
In town, I saw that the center was packed with people and casteller teams from all over the country. Hands sweating, I was waiting for our turn to compete. Mom came and patted me on the shoulder. “Have focus. Have faith.” I nodded to show that I understood and would do my best to follow the suggestions.
Soon, too soon, it was our turn.
My father and three of the strongest men stood in a circle facing each other as they held tightly to each other’s arms. Four more strong men stepped behind, each wrapping his arms around the chest of a man and giving him a bear hug. Then fifty more men and women crowded behind and began pushing on their backs to keep them tightly together.
Our base was solid. Four smaller men climbed onto the backs of the base group and stood on their shoulders. They then grabbed onto each other’s arms and held firmly, creating a strong second tier (层). Another group of men would form the third tier. Then, a group of women, including Mom, started climbing and began to form the fourth tier. Our tower was growing taller and taller.

My Big Solo (独唱)
The day had finally arrived: the day of my big solo. Everyone was there; my mom and dad and my little brother. And it was a big event: the Spring Fling Choir Concert. The whole class was dressed up. My name was on the cover of the program in bright yellow characters. I couldn’t believe it when I saw my name. Not that it was my name, but that it wasn’t Renee’s. Renee and I had been classmates since kindergarten. She was always ahead of me. Dance class needs a big finish? Renee was picked. The school plays? Renee would have the leads while I was cast as her mother or sister or neighbor. I even played her dog once. The only time I ever came in ahead of Renee was at roll call (点名). Cindy comes before Renee. I count that as a victory!
The choir concert tryouts were stressful. We waited in the library as Ms. Jenkins called us individually into the choir room. By the time she called me, I was shaking. When I came back to the library, Renee smiled at me. Ms. Jenkins called her name and Renee calmly followed her. She was still calm and smiling when her tryout was over
When Ms. Jenkins announced who had made the special choral group (合唱队), I wasn’t surprised when Renee’s name was on her list and mine wasn’t. “So, what else is new?” I said under my breath Sudden clapping brought me out of my bad mood. Everyone was looking at me. I’ve missed something here, I thought. Ms. Jenkins smiled at me and said, “Cindy, you will have to start practicing with me.The solos take extra preparation.” Solo? I got the solo? I glanced over at Renee. She smiled broadly and gave me the thumbs-up sign. Oh, that’s another thing. She is always so nice
Now the day had come. We filed onto the stage and took our places. I was front and center. Ms. Jenkins raised her baton (指挥棒) and we began to sing. My parents were smiling at me, cameras flashing.

Failing the year changed the world as I knew it. Overnight, it seemed as though everything had changed. I lost my friends in school because every conversation was filled with pit-y, theirs, and shame, mine. I was stopped from watching TV. At school, some teachers ignored my raising hands because I’d already studied the text before but failed. I used to love singing, now my life was filled with sadness.
Some months later, when the talent competition was announced in school, I was picked for the final round. On the day of the contest, I stood before the entire school, closed my eyes and sang the song. In that moment, I realized what “You have come to show you”meant to me to me—I had come to show me to my classmates and my teachers, to show them that I wasn’t just a girl who got held back and failed. I was good for something, and I was enough the way I was. Sometimes, when you sing like you mean the words, chances are you might win.

8. Ben looked away again and lifted the cover of a large cake pan on the kitchen counter. There was a Martha’s great cake. He cut off a large piece, sat down at the kitchen table when his eyes went back to that container again. What would it hurt if he looked inside? Why was Martha so secretive about that container, anyway? Ben took a bite and debated with himself—should he or shouldn’t he? Finally he could no longer resist. He set the container on the counter. Feeling so scared to look inside, Ben’s eyes opened wide—the container was empty, except for a little folded slip of paper at the bottom.
Ben reached down for the paper, his big rugged hand struggling to get inside. A brief note was scrawled inside, and Ben immediately recognized the handwriting as that of Martha’s mother. Very simply it said: “Martha—To everything you make, add a dash of love.” With tears rolling down, Ben replaced the note and the container, and quietly went back to finishing his cake. Now he completely understood why it tasted so good.

9.Then suddenly it was kids’ turn to make the last tier. Tightly gripping the clothing of those we were climbing over, we passed the first two tiers without difficulty. By the time I reached the fourth tier, nerves made my hands sweat and my knees tremble, for I was very high off the ground. As I climbed onto my mother’s shoulders, my foot slipped off and I slid down. Instinctively, I clutched Mom’s arm with all my might. Feeling the tower below swaying a bit, my heart began a crazy dance in my chest. “Stay focus!” Exclaimed a kid beside me. Sweat trickling down my face, I took a deep breath to calm myself. I could not be responsible for ruining our tower. I could not disgrace my parents or myself. I could not let my team down.
“Jordi. Easy!” My mother whispered the words. I calmed my heart and again placed my foot on Mom’s lap. This time, I grasped her shirt and firmly pushed myself to a stand, balancing on one foot. With the other foot, I stepped up and onto her shoulders, and then brought the other foot up. Reaching deep inside to feel my balance, with focus and trust, I rose slowly out of my crouch and straightened my knees. I worked hard to hold myself straight and still until our tower was complete. Whether or not we won this competition, I knew we had done what we had set out to do. With faith in each other and with focus on the task, we built our tower. Eventually, I became a casteller!

My big moment come. The spotlight flicked over me and then circled me in its bright light Ms. Jenkins nodded at me and signaled me to start. But I, stunned by the pressure and attention, froze, the note sticking in my throat as the choir kept singing softly behind me. Ms. Jenkins began to look a little worried. At that very moment, from behind me, Renee gave me a gentle poke and whispered, “you can do it, Cindy.” My turn came again. Encouraged by her, I took a deep breath, opened my mouth and sang out as loudly as I could.
The rest of the solo went well. And when the concert was over, the applause was thunderous. When we filed off the stage, my family met me with praise and hugs. Renee was next to hug me. It felt awkward. “Thanks, Renee,” was all I could get myself to say. “It was nothing,” she said, flashing me her usual sunny smile, “You’ve always been there for me all these years! That’s what friends are for.” “You’re right,” I said slowly, beginning to like the feeling of being her friend, and hugged her tightly “That’s what friends are for.”
