    1.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Children played in the yards along the block. I waved to them as I walked by, delivering mail at houses along the way. It was just an ordinary Thursday afternoon.
There were only about 700 people on my route. Over the years, I had gotten to know most of them, if not in person then by their mail. Mrs. Dorman at the end of my route got a package from the Home Shopping Network almost every day. She was an old lady, living alone and I liked being able to bring a little joy into her life with my delivery.
Some mailmen preferred routes where they drove a truck and slipped the mail into a collection of mailboxes without seeing anyone face to face. Not me. I wanted to be outside talking to people.
To be honest, there wasn’t much excitement on a local postal route like mine. Except a sudden rainstorm or a holiday, every day was pretty much the same. But I knew I provided an important service in my job. College acceptances, birthday presents, postcards from all corners of the world——they could all make someone’s day.
I dug in my bag for Mrs. Dorman’s mail——the Home Shopping Network package. She would be glad to get this, whatever it was. Mrs. Dorman often waited for me at the door and we always had a nice talk.
Mrs. Dorman wasn’t at the door today, but I heard the TV going inside, so I knew she was home. Probably watching her shopping shows, I thought. I bent down to put her package by the door.
I froze. What was that? Something like a weak cry. I leaned closer to the door. Maybe the sound came from the TV? “Mrs. Dorman?” I called. No answer. And then the same weak cry. I tried to open the door, but it was locked. So I pressed my ear against it.

    2.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写一段,使之构成一个完整的短文。
It was Sarah’s turn to tell her class where she went this summer. She stood up proudly. “This summer I went to Bradley,” Sarah announced. “They have a big flea market (跳蚤市场) there. My dad bought me a pair of skates.”
“That’s not a trip,” Kevin said loudly to his class. “My mom and I go to Bradley all the time. It’s only a half-hour drive from here.”
Sarah stopped suddenly, feeling awkward. Her teacher encouraged her to continue. But Sarah didn’t feel proud of her family’s trip to Bradley anymore. She mumbled (含糊地说) that she was finished, and then hurried back to her desk, hoping that the other kids didn’t notice her face turning red.
Sarah listened as others talked proudly about their trips. It seemed as if everyone had taken a big trip over the summer other than her.
After school, things got worse. One of the wheels on Sarah’s skates came off. As Sarah was sitting on the road, wondering what to do with her loose wheel, Mrs. Henderson, her neighbor, walked up and asked why she didn’t look happy.
“I was the only person who didn’t go somewhere far away this summer,” Sarah said softly, eyes filled with tears.
To cheer her up, Mrs. Henderson kindly invited her to come inside. Sarah gratefully nodded, leaving her loose skates outside. She sank into Mrs. Henderson’s yellow sofa when someone knocked at the door.
“Oh, I forgot about Kevin.” said Mrs. Henderson. “He’s here to fix my bedroom doors.”
Sarah’s heart beat wildly. She thought about school that day. She was about to jump behind the sofa so that Kevin wouldn’t see her, but it was too late.

    3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jenny was a bright-eyed, pretty five-year-old girl. One day when she and her mother were checking out at the grocery store, Jenny saw a plastic (塑料的) pearl (珍珠) necklace (项链) priced at $2.50. How she wanted that necklace, and when she asked her mother if she would buy it for her, her mother said, “Well, it is a pretty necklace, but it costs an awful lot of money. After all, I’ll buy you the necklace, and when we get home we can make up a list of chores (家务活) that you can do to pay for the necklace. And don’t forget that for your birthday, Grandma just might give you a whole dollar bill, too. Okay?” Jenny agreed, and her mother bought the plastic pearl necklace for her.
Jenny worked on her chores very hard every day, and sure enough, her grandma gave her a brand-new dollar bill for her birthday. Soon Jenny paid off the plastic pearl necklace. How Jenny loved the necklace! She wore them everywhere to kindergarten, bed and when she went out with her mother to run errands (差事). The only time she didn’t wear it was in the shower. Her mother had told her that it would turn her neck green!
Jenny had a very loving Daddy. When Jenny went to bed, he would get up from his favorite chair every night and read Jenny her favorite story.
One night when he finished the story, he said, “Jenny, do you love me?”
“Oh yes, Daddy, you know I love you,” the little girl said.
“Well, then, give me your pearl necklace.”
“Oh! Daddy, not my pearl necklace!” Jenny refused. “But you can have Rosy, my favorite doll. Remember her? You gave her to me last year for my birthday. And you can have her tea party outfit (装饰), too. Okay?”
“Oh no, darling, that’s okay.” Her father brushed her cheek with a kiss. “Good night, little one.”

    4.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a warm summer evening in Surat, my wife and I were on our way to the grocery store, when I noticed a man sitting on the pavement under a street light. Something about him made me stop. He sat motionless, his steady gaze fixed on an object only he could see. His beard was long and untidy, much like the matted hair on his head. An abandoned advertisement banner(横幅) hung loosely around his waist was his only protection from the environment. The vacant look in his eyes indicated he was possibly incapable of normal mental function.
We tried asking him a few questions, but he showed no signs of having heard or understood us. He just sat there, staring into the darkness, unaware of our presence. It was quite apparent that he was in need of help and we thought a while about what we could do. “He looks hungry,” my wife remarked, “but there is no point in giving him money.” I agreed. “Let’s buy him a loaf of bread instead,” I suggested.
It took us a while to finish our shopping. When we returned to the spot where we had first seen the man, he wasn’t there. We looked around, but there was no sign of him. Disappointed, we decided to go home, wondering what to do with the loaf of bread.
We’d barely gone a hundred meters when we spotted him. Driven by hunger, he had crossed the road and was seated with a family of migrant labours, who had camped there. They were workers who were tired out from a long day work under the boiling summer sun and struggled to support family. Surprisingly, none of the family members seemed to mind his presence. In fact, he looked to be quite welcome. The family had accepted him without question, just as they would a visiting relative or a close friend. Curious, I stopped my motorcycle in the shadows and watched.

    5.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was a cold December, at the tail end of the Great Depression, and things were tough. Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community. My father had died five years earlier, leaving us worse off; we relied on social assistance to keep us clothed, and although our clothes were secondhand, we thought they were beautiful.
Looking back, I realized what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would tuck a new piece of cardboard in our shoes because our soles were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have French toast ready for us. Our rent was $25 a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would move out right after Christmas on the first of January.
The holidays were fast approaching, and we were entitled to $25 for Christmas from social services. It was four days before Christmas. Mum said that instead of buying food, she was going to use the money to pay our back rent. That way we’d have a roof over our heads for a little while longer.
Then she told us that there would be no Christmas gifts.
What Mom didn’t know was that I had been selling Christmas trees, sweeping snow and doing part-time jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots —boots that weren’t patched; boots with no cardboard in it. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch, Top-Genuine, Pierre Paris boots, and they cost $23.
The big day for getting my boots came on Christmas Eve afternoon. I was very excited as I hurried up the shopping center for it. On the way, I noticed a grocery store.

    6.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When my husband Randy died in late fall, deciding what to do with his garden was way down on the list of necessary tasks. During the first few months, I cried with our daughters, planned a memorial, cried with my family, celebrated a quiet Thanksgiving, and panicked over not having bought Christmas presents.
As the calendar turned to a new year, the often rainy days and long nights deepened my sorrow. I found myself exhausted at the end of February, both physically and mentally.
Then the daffodils bloomed (开花) in the garden.
Years before, Randy had planted dozens of these lemon-yellow flowers. To him, they served as a reminder of hope, a promise that light and warmth would soon replace cold and dark. Looking at those dauffodils, I thought about how Randy had considered our garden a living work of art, carefully choosing plants so we’d see new blooms every month.
Then I noticed all the weeds that had taken root and spread everywhere. The neglect (疏于打理) showed, for Randy’s illness had lasted a couple of years, a time when he didn’t have energy for yard work the way he had before.
Faced with the neglected garden, I felt overwhelmed in the beginning. My daughters suggested I hire a service to clean everything up. I didn’t respond.
Every time I sat in the garden alone, the memories of the lively garden came flooding, like the numerous scenes in an unforgettable film. Many days Randy came home from work, changed into old clothes, and headed out the door to mow or prune (修剪). Orange dragonflies followed him around the yard as he worked. Honeybees buzzed among the flowers, birds sang beautiful songs, and gentle breezes carried the sweet smell of dirt. No matter how cold or wet it was, the fresh air and physical activity made him energized and refreshed. For Randy, the work was quiet and comforting, which was a relief, as well as a pleasure.

    Into the Night
There was no one on the streets, not even a police car. When you don’t even see a police car, you know it’s bad out there. It was a Sunday night in February 1978. I was on my way to the night duty with ambulance, and the snow was really coming down.
When I got to the workplace at 6:25 P.M. my partner, Joe, arrived a few minutes later, and the other workers went home.
The call came in at 7:20 P.M. It was said that at the Children Hospital, there was a baby called Jack with a healthy heart but near death. In Hamilton was another very sick baby named Mary who was waiting for a heart transplant (移植). If we could get Mary to the Children Hospital in time, Jack’s parents were ready to stop his life support and the doctors would be able to use his heart to save Mary’s life.
The dispatcher (调度员) was looking for volunteers to pick up a nurse, a doctor and Mary from Hamilton, and took them to the Children Hospital where Jack was dying. The problem was this heavy snowstorm. All of southern region was almost shut down, and nothing was moving anywhere. So they were asking for volunteers. The driving conditions were so bad that to accept the task was a challenge. But, with our help that night, although one baby would die, the other one might live. That was the deal.
When I explained the situation to my partner, he just looked at me. And I said to the dispatcher, “Okay, we’re going. Let’s move now.”
With great efforts, we finally entered the medical centre in Hamilton. After they got on our ambulance, we headed toward the Children Hospital. Time was precious.
Faced with strong winds, we inched our way along the road, feeling like we were flying a plane in the middle of a fog—sometimes we couldn’t see anything. We slowly made our way under such driving conditions.
Suddenly, they realized how to arrive there in time became urgent (急迫的).

    8.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Ms. Johnson will never forget Chelsea, a wounded soul. Over the years Chelsea had always struggled, both academically and with self-confidence. Additionally, her mother had died after a heroic battle with a terminal illness when Chelsea was a fifth grader. As she began her sixth grade, Chelsea was still hurting. Ms. Johnson worried about her with good reason.
Each fall, Ms. Johnson takes the students for a five-day adventure at Wolf Ridge, an environmental learning center in the woods of Northern Minnesota overlooking Lake Superior. The week is filled with learning, team building, and overcoming seemingly impossible challenges. They go in October, and the turning leaves of trees come to symbolize the changes happening to the students over the week. The steps and growth students make at Wolf Ridge become a metaphor Ms. Johnson uses throughout the year as her students face challenges in the classroom.
The most difficult activity is the High Adventure Ropes Course, which stretches from tower to tower high amongest the treetops forty feet above the ground. Ms. Johnson knew this experience would be particularly difficult for Chelsea.
When it was time for her to fasten the harness (安全带), Chelsea was already trembling. The harness offers physical protection, but not much mental comfort when nothing but a slippery board or an unsteady wire is between your feet and the ground far below. Chelsea stepped hesitantly onto the Swinging Wood Bridge, and only after the instructor’s encouragement, slowly made her way across its shaky boards up to the first tower. With the support of a chaperone (监护人) stationed there, she began her way across the Burma Bridge, made of merely three wires and straps. Her trembling body added to its shaking. From down below, her ground partners shouted up supportively, “Come on, Chelsea, you’re doing great!”
Chelsea finally reached the second tower and eventually stepped out onto the next challenge and slowly inched her way across.

    9.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
There was a farm not far from the coastline. It belonged to a man called Tom. Tom couldn’t do everything by himself on the farm with so many cows, chickens and vegetables to take care of. Thus, he needed to employ one man to help him run the farm. However, no one worked on his farm for long. Why?Because the work was too tiring. Since the farm was near the sea, there were often storms from the sea that struck his farm, especially the unroofed stock barn(露天牲口棚). When a storm came, Tom and the man he hired had to get up quickly and try to reduce the losses caused by the storm. Therefore, no one liked working there. Tom had to look for people to work for him all the time.
One day, a man called Henry read the poster that Tom had put up and then came to his farm.
“Sir, I can work for you.” said Henry.
Tom looked at Henry. This young man was neither strong nor tall.
    “Are you sure?” asked Tom.
“Yes, sir. I can do the work well. But you must pay me twice what you paid others before,” said that young man.
Tom was surprised. He didn’t really believe such a man could do the work well. But it was really hard for him to find someone else to work for him. At last, he decided to give Henry a try. However, before hiring him, he said, “Can you really be a good helper? The work on the farm is hard and tiring. And there are often storms.”
Henry smiled and said, “Don’t worry. I can be a good helper. You’ll see. And storms won’t be a problem. They won’t even disturb our sleep. We can sleep very well even on stormy nights.”
And then Henry stayed on the farm. To Tom’s joy, Henry worked hard and did his work well. It was obvious that he hadn’t lied.
However, one night, there was a big storm. Tom was woken up by the strong wind. He was worried that the storm would cause great losses for his farm. And he saw his helper nowhere.

Counting the votes took about five minutes, but it seemed like hours. At last, after three long years, the “PCHS” letters on my uniform would soon be edged with gold cording (金线), identifying me as the important Captain of Polk County High School cheerleaders (啦啦队员), which was quite an accomplishment before I ended my school days in a blaze of glory.
“Girls,” she began, “it is my pleasure to announce that Terry Shaw has been elected Captain of Polk County High School cheerleading team.” A resounding cheer was heard throughout the gym. How could this be? I hadn’t missed a practice or a game in three years. Terry couldn’t claim this flawless record.
Everyone gathered around Terry with congratulations, but I was glued to my seat that only moments before was the springboard to my throne (宝座). She had stolen my thunder and swept my dream right out from under me. Finally, I walked over to Terry on shaky legs and managed a “Good luck, Terry,” in a whisper that barely masked my urge to cry. Terry hugged me close and said, “I wasn’t expecting this, Annie. What a shock.” I didn’t reply her with mean words but deep inside I wanted to do just that.
All the way home, I sobbed. There was no way I was going to stay on a team so blind that they couldn’t see the one most deserving of being named captain. I slammed the front door, stomped up the steps and threw myself onto my bed in a dramatic display of sobs and sighs that eventually gave way to sleep.
The next morning I marched over to my closet and took out my uniform. Once it was in my hands and I held it close to me, I knew I couldn’t quit. Heartbroken as I was, my true love was cheering with my teammates.
How hard it was to go to that first practice after Terry had been named captain. The moment I arrived, Coach Maguire asked me to take three of the new girls and work with them on our basic practice. Terry was assigned three as well.

    参考答案:
    1.One possible version:
This time I clearly heard the words, “Help me!” A chill of horror suddenly sweeping over me, I was hit by a terrible idea——Mrs. Dorman might be in danger! Taking a deep breath, I kept pushing against the door without the slightest hesitation until the latch finally broke. Forcing the door open, I was startled to find Mrs. Dorman lying under the cupboard, moaning in pain. The moment Mrs. Dorman noticed my approach, her pale face lit up, as if seizing a glimmer of hope. Then the next few minutes saw me move the cupboard with all my might, cautiously help her sit on the sofa and call the ambulance promptly. A while later, the doctors arrived, rushing Mrs. Dorman to the hospital for a complete check-up.
“What had happened that day?” I asked Mrs. Dorman after she came back home from the hospital. Mrs. Dorman explained that she was watching TV when she suddenly lost her balance. At that critical moment, she managed to grab the cupboard, but unfortunately, it came down on top of her. Much to my relief, Mrs. Dorman was fine except a pain in her shoulder. However, thoughts flashing back to that horrible moment, I felt my heart was still fluttering with fear, “Do you know what I was thinking when I was lying under the cupboard?” Mrs. Dorman asked me. I shook my head. “I didn’t get into a panic. I knew you would come just like you do every day. That’s what gave me comfort,” she uttered, her eyes twinkling with grateful tears and a smile spreading across her wrinkled face.

2.“Hi, Sarah,” said Kevin, waving at her as he walked in. Awkward, Sarah didn’t feel like waving back. Noticing it, Kevin sighed regretfully, adding that he hadn’t gone anywhere far either as he helped fix things all the summer. “Are those your new skates?” he pointed at the skates outside. Sarah nodded gently. In no time, Kevin skillfully fixed the wheel and handed the skate to Sarah. Amazed, Sarah looked at him in admiration. At that, Kevin breathed a sigh of relief and smiled proudly. At the very moment, Mrs. Henderson promptly explained that although it was exciting to explore new places, they didn’t have to travel far to have the thrill of doing something new. “Yeah, it was fun learning how to fix things.” said Kevin. “So was learning how to skate,” Sarah agreed. They grinned at each other.

Then her father smiled, comforting her with a warm hug. “That’s okay, darling. Good night, my little one.”
Several days later, when Jenny’s father came in to read her a story as usual, he was surprised to find something under the story book, which turned out to be the necklace. “Daddy, now you can have it.” Jenny raised her head, “You know, I love you.” Her father was moved beyond words. Slowly, he pulled something out of his pocket. It was a pretty necklace with real pearls shining. “The more you are willing to give, the more you are likely to receive. That’s the real meaning of sharing and giving.” Her father helped Jenny put on pearls. “You know, I love you, little one.”

As she rolled and roasted more meat, she handed the beggar a share, keeping an eye on him to make sure that his plate was not empty. The beggar was eating hungrily from an aluminum plate. She smiled as she watched him dig into the food clumsily, dropping every other share on to his chest and then to the ground. The other members of the family chatted happily as they ate, the meat disappearing faster than the cheerful lady could make them. (82 words)
Watching for a while, we were deeply touched. The scene where the family worked and earned a few rupees(卢比) under the boiling summer sun to keep their stomachs from growling came to mind. Overcome with guilt, we placed the loaf of bread near the man and rode away. Not until then did we learn the true meaning of giving and sharing. 5.Paragraph 1
The Christmas lights and decorations held me, and I slowed my pace. It was then that I realized in our dim house, we had no lights, no decorations and no money for Christmas. A strange sense of guilt suddenly engulfed me. With Pierre Paris boots still in my mind, I tried to convince myself there was at least French toast tonight. However, my family’ disappointed faces on that cold Christmas kept lingering in my mind clearly. After what seemed like a century, I ultimately made the resolution and stepped into the grocery store, eyes brimming with determination. I bought a turkey, ham, oranges and all the Christmas decorations. I spent every dime of my hard-earned money and went back to my house.
    Paragraph 2
Once home, I piled the groceries on the porch (门廊) and knocked on the door. Out came my thin mom. The instant she unlocked the door, the groceries fell inside. Staring hard at these items, she was dumbfounded. Tears threatening to spill over my eyes, I hollered, “Merry Christmas, Mother! There really is a Santa Claus!” Words seemed to fail to convey her emotions so that she embraced me tightly. It was when a half-choking “Thanks” escaped from her mouth that a sense of achievement surged through me. I bet I would never have had such satisfaction if I had bought the Pierre Paris boots then. I had a lot of explaining to do as we unpacked all the food. That night, I, an eleven-year-old boy, received the most precious Christmas gift—my responsibility and satisfaction for my family.

I started weeding, watering and looking after the daffodils. It seemed like to me working in the garden was a way to commemorate Randy.
Weeks later, my daughters returned to visit me. She was very surprised at what she saw. Orange dragonflies were flying around the yard. Honeybees buzzed among the flowers and birds sang beautiful songs. She used to be worried I would be in a bad mood. But now she realized everything was in a good order. Seeing this, she said it looks as if her father was always with us.

Suddenly, we realized how to reach there in time became urgent (急迫的). We were burning more fuel than usual because of our slow speed and the bad conditions. Joe and I were both watching the fuel level and not saying a word. We would likely use up fuel. We had to go for the hospital. I called the dispatcher for help. To our surprise, she told us that a police car was available and we could expect it on the way. So, we put on our full emergency lights. Under their escort (护送), we continued our way confidently. Eventually, we stopped right in front of the doors.
Joe and I both looked at each other with a broad smile. We shut off our lights, our engine—everything. It was now nearly five A.M. The whole trip took much longer than usual. We called the dispatcher to say we had successfully completed our mission. We later learned the surgery was a success, and one set of parents that day had cause to celebrate life. We were totally tired, but also happy, knowing that because of our efforts, a baby had lived. When I got home later that morning, I dropped into bed exhausted—but fell asleep feeling good about myself, and my life.
