What was your most unforgettable moment? My most unforgettable moment was when I was applauded for passing the standard test.
I was considered as a very average student at school. As a result, some of my classmates would make fun of me at times. Besides, my teachers didn’t think highly of me. In a word, I was a failure in the eyes of others. I used to have a hard time in every test and my teachers would complain to my parents about my marks.
One day in my ninth grade, my class teacher came to my home. I was really scared because that teacher didn’t like me. After all, I didn’t do well in my studies at all. While she was talking to my mother, I was out in the garden. But I wasn’t playing. I was too nervous to play. I feared my teacher would say something bad to my mother.
Finally, my class teacher left and I went back to the house. When I entered the sitting room, I saw my mom sitting on the sofa, with tears in her eyes.
    “Mom,” I called.
“Come here,” my mother said. She asked me to sit next to her. I was too nervous to move. Eventually, I sat next to her.
“Your teacher said that you would have a slim chance of entering high school,” my mother said.
I was feeling embarrassed and hopeless at that moment.
My mother suddenly held my hands and said,“ I’m sorry, Jim. I didn’t receive a good education, so I can’t help you with your studies at all. You can only depend on yourself. However, I believe that you’ll pass the standard test this year if you study hard enough.”
Looking at the trusting eyes of my mother, I was greatly encouraged. I promised myself at that moment that I would not let her down.
    Paragraph 1:
I made a decision to study hard.

    Paragraph 2:
Finally, the day of the standard test arrived.

“Are we really planning on staying here?” Sophie asked me. “I feel like we have no choice!” I responded to her. The place in question was the Starfish Holiday In, a motel (汽车旅馆) of doubtful character on the beach in Jacksonville, Florida. We ended up here because of our own irresponsibility. It was our freshman year of college, and being eager to escape the cold and upsetting weather for spring break, we decided to travel to the sunny south, for we had frequently been told in TV programs and movies about the fascinating scenery of its beaches. Florida’s natural beauty and lively cities make it the top destination in the world. With more than 1, 200 miles of sand beaches and 160 state parks, tourists can find a corner to enjoy all to themselves.
However, it was a last minute decision; we did not make reservations anywhere ahead of time. When we arrived in Florida, we tried to book a room in a good but affordable hotel. After going to six hotels and finding no room left at all, we stopped at an information centre. A kind and helpful woman delivered the discouraging news that, if we didn’t have reservations anywhere, it would be very difficult for us to find a safe place to stay. She recommended that we check a couple of places, but they all seemed too expensive for us. Then she said that the Starfish Inn provided rooms that were reasonably priced, but that she would not want her daughters to stay there!
So that is how we got into our difficult situation. After paying the owner of the motel, we dragged our luggage to the room, where we opened the door with great shock. Everything in the room was in shades of blue and green, with real and painted starfish on nearly every surface; the place looked like it hadn't been redecorated since 50 years ago! It looked like a mess. How could we spend the whole night in such a room?

    3.读后续写
It was a rainy winter evening. Joe could see an old lady on the side of the road waiting for help. So he stopped his car and got out of his car. When he came closer to her, the lady looked in despair. No one had stopped to help her for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn’t look safe. Joe could see that she was scared. Knowing how she felt, Joe said quickly. “I’m here to help you, ma’am. It is too cold outside. Please go and stay inside the car. By the way, my name is Joe.”
Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. While Joe was changing the tire, the lady rolled down the window and started to talk to him. She told him that she was only passing through. She was very grateful that he came to help her. Joe just smiled as he put the flat tire in the trunk (后备箱).
“How much do I owe you?” the lady asked, then adding that any amount would be all right. Joe, however, rejected the payment. “You don’t owe me a thing. I’m only passing through. Someone once helped me out. Just the way I’m helping you. If you want to pay me back, please pay it forward. Don’t let the chain (链条;连续) of love end with you.” Joe responded. He waited until the old lady had started her car and driven off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but Joe felt joyful as he set off for home.
Paragraph1: A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe.

One windy day in March, Kitty Miller was on her way to school when she glanced into a store window and saw a great pile of lovely red apples. “Oh,” She exclaimed (惊呼). “How lovely! If only Mamma could have one!” Immediately, the store owner recognized the familiar girl and asked her to pick one. Kitty just shook her head and ran away shyly.
Kitty’s mother was extremely poor. She had been a dressmaker ever since Kitty’s father died, and had to work hard to earn a living for herself and Kitty. Unfortunately, she had recently become very sick and had to lie in bed all day long. When Kitty was away at school, the house was incredibly cold and cheerless. She missed her little angel — that is what she called Kitty. Kitty took great care of her mother. She cooked her food, mostly soup. They could not afford fresh fruit. Kitty would even sing to her mother at night.
When Kitty reached the school that day, her thoughts were full of her sick mother and the lovely red apples. She was usually an excellent student, but that day she made so many mistakes that the teacher looked at her in surprise. The little girl could only sit at her desk, with her book before her, and dream of those red apples.
When school was dismissed, Kitty started slowly homeward. She had walked only a short distance when she saw a man in front of her drop his wallet. Running quickly forward, she picked it up. The wallet felt quite heavy in Kitty’s little hand.
“There must be a good deal of money in it,” thought Kitty. “How I wish I could keep it, so that I would then be able to purchase a red apple for Mamma, and so many other things she needs.”

The January snowstorms in Canada usually come suddenly and violently. On January 31st, 2022, residents in Canada were bracing for a major snowstorm.
Shannon St. Onge knew the storm was coming. She just thought she had more time. She is the director of finance at First Nations University of Canada. When she received a call about a check that needed her signature (签名) around 3 p. m. , she rushed to the city of Regina, which is about 15 miles from her home in Pense, to get the job done. She finished her task quickly and began heading back home, where her two kids were waiting for her.
Before leaving town, Shannon filled her gas tank and picked up a pizza for her kids to have for dinner. But as she started for home, the weather quickly worsened with the storm arriving hours earlier than predicted, and before she knew it, she was driving straight through a snowstorm!
Shannon drove as long as she could by sticking her head out the driver’s side window so she could see the obstacles on the edge of the road. Eventually, she was forced to stop the vehicle entirely.
She called 911 for assistance, but there wasn’t much the operator could do. They said they would send out a cruiser to check on her, but no one ever came. That’s when the single mom started to worry seriously.
“Would the gas tank last until morning? What if I was hit by another vehicle? What if I fell asleep and the tailpipe was blocked? What if I didn’t make it home at all? ” thought Shannon.
Looking around for clues about her location, Shannon was able to make out a sign that said Bouvier Lane. She shared the location with one of her friends. As luck would have it, her friend recognized a farm near where Shannon was stuck, and said, “ I know that family. I’ll contact them.”

Jack went to the swimming pool quite early this morning. He was hoping that there would be another swimmer, but not his tiresome neighbor Mrs. Wilson, who was not popular among teenagers like him. However, when he got to the pool, Mrs. Wilson was the only swimmer there, floating on her back in the deep end.
He waved at her half-heartedly before diving in and doing a few freestyle laps. When he stopped, Mrs. Wilson said, “Great job if you were doing the breaststroke (蛙泳). You have to keep your hands cupped the whole time for the freestyle stroke. And you’re not dropping your head enough to breathe properly. You should see how my grandson Little Tommy swims…”
“Grrr…!” Jack thought. He dived underwater and swam away. After a few strokes, just out of curiosity, he cupped his hands the way Mrs. Wilson had advised. His stroke did seem smoother. He tried lowering his head a bit, which seemed to make him faster.
He swam to the shallow end of the pool. Maybe having Mrs. Wilson around wasn’t so bad. He wondered how she knew so much about swimming techniques. He glanced at where she’d been floating, but she was no longer there. Suddenly he noticed a large, bright mass on the bottom of the pool. He stared at it. Not it—her—Mrs. Wilson. She wasn’t moving! “Oh no!” Jack cried. Mrs. Wilson looked like she was unconscious…or dead!
“Help! Help! A drowning woman!” Jack yelled. He didn’t know whether anyone heard him. It was only a few minutes past six o'clock. Nobody seemed to be awake or outside.
He’d have to rescue Mrs. Wilson himself. Luckily, he’d learned a little about first aid and CPR (心肺复苏术) from a class in Oklahoma. He dived under the water and swam toward her as fast as he could. But when he got closer to her still body, he wasn’t sure what to do. Mrs. Wilson was so large. How could he possibly lift her? Jack wrapped one arm around her neck, paddling up through the water and kicking with all his strength to the top.

After graduating from college, I worked as a salesman for a piano company. We advertised our pianos in small town newspapers and then, when we had received many replies, we would load our little trucks, and drive into the area and sell the pianos to those who had replied.
Every time we advertised, we would receive a reply on a postcard which said, “Please bring me a new piano for my little granddaughter. It must be red mahogany (红木). I can pay $10 a month with my egg money.” Of course, we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month. No finance company would carry a contract with payments that small, so we ignored her postcards.
One day, however, I happened to be in that area calling on other replies, and out of curiosity I decided to look the old lady up. I found pretty much what I expected: The old lady lived in a one-room cabin in the middle of a cotton field. The cabin had a dirt floor and there were chickens in the house. Obviously, the old lady could not have qualified to purchase anything on credit — no car, no phone, no real job, nothing but a roof over her head and not a very good one at that.
I could see daylight through it in several places. Her little granddaughter was about 10, barefoot and wearing a feed sack (麻布袋) dress. I explained to the old lady that we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month and that she should stop writing to us every time she saw our ad. I drove away heartsick, but my advice had no effect — she still sent us the same post card every six weeks. Always wanting a new piano, red mahogany, please, and swearing she would never miss a $10 payment. It was sad.
Several years later, I owned my own piano company, and when I advertised in that area, the postcards started coming to me. For months, I ignored them — what else could I do?
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

    Random Acts of Kindness
I was driving along Clarendon Street in South Melbourne on my way to Castlemaine to visit my parents. As I stopped at a traffic light, I noticed a man lying on a bench seat on the footpath beside the road. It was early evening and his rough appearance and the fact that he was holding a bottle wrapped in newspaper confirmed my immediate suspicions — he was a drunk.
As soon as I saw him, I felt a strong feeling of sympathy for him. But like so many other people, I had other places to be and other things to do. As I watched, I saw two policemen approach and instantly I felt relieved. After all, it was their responsibility to clean up the streets and make sure men like him got a chance to be somewhere safe for the night. As I sat waiting for the traffic lights to turn green, I couldn’t believe what I saw. The two police walked around and when they reached the man, both of whom turned their heads the other way, as if not to see, and walked right past. Suddenly, a firm belief streamed through my mind, “Life is never so busy that there is no time to serve.”
Right then I looked up and the traffic lights turned green — and I had a decision to make. I knew that if I drove off, I would have no peace, so I turned left, drove around the block, parked the car and walked back to the man. As I approached him, I felt completely unconfident to deal with the situation and even a little foolish. What was I going to say? What was I going to do? At the very least I could drive him home — if he had a home. I found him sleeping soundly and at first, he didn’t respond to me at all, so I reached out and gently shook him awake.

    Lisa and Her Dog
One day, Lisa was walking home from school when she passed a pet shop. It was the same one she had passed hundreds of times before. However, this time she looked in and saw the prettiest black dog she had never seen in her life. It was as black as coal (煤块) and had a red bow behind one of its ears.
Lisa ran home to tell her mother that she had seen the gift she wanted for her birthday, which was next week. Lisa ran as fast as her legs would carry her. She ran inside the house, slamming (砰地关上) the door behind her. She rushed into the kitchen where her mother was busy cooking dinner.
She asked, “Mommy, do you think I could get the dog for my birthday?” “I don’t know,” her mother replied, “It depends on what your father has got to say about getting a dog.” “But you and Daddy promised I could have anything I wanted for my birthday,” Lisa muttered (嘟囔). She walked into the living room, threw her schoolbag on the sofa and turned on the TV. Upon seeing this, Lisa’s mother said, “If you want your Daddy to let you have a dog, you need to get your homework done before your Daddy comes home.”
“Okay, Mommy!” Lisa immediately turned off the TV. She got her schoolbooks out of her backpack and started doing her homework. A short while later, she heard her father pulling up into the driveway and getting out of his car. He walked into the house and laid his newspaper on the coffee table. Seeing Lisa in the living room, he went to the kitchen and said to his wife, “What made Lisa start her homework early? She usually waits until after dinner.” “Well, she just thought she would start her homework earlier tonight. She would also like to ask you a question, but I’ll let her explain,” said Lisa’s mother.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.
One day, Ali took Zahra’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache.

The moment Zahra saw Ali and the shoes in his hand, her face lit up.

    1.    I made a decision to study hard. I made it not only for my mom’s expectation, but more importantly for myself. Everyday, I spent nearly all the time reviewing what I had learnt. Whenever I had problems, I always turned to my teacher for help and guidance. And my best friends also encouraged me to try harder and helped me when I needed it. I had to say that I really wanted to pass this test and I thought I had made full preparations for it. I looked forward to its coming to prove that my effort would pay off finally.
Finally, the day of the standard test arrived. I went into the test room with confidence. However, when I got the paper, I suddenly felt a bit nervous and afraid. I was afraid of failing this test. But soon I found myself back and finished this test carefully and patiently. A few days later, when the result came out, my teacher told me that I passed it. I felt so excited and my mom was also proud of me.

In the living room, Sofie cleared up the sofa and sat on it but was sacred half to death by the sharp noise it let out. Hopefully, I turned on the TV; no picture or sound came out. In the dining section, we found the small table was so shaky that it seemed that it would fall apart at any moment. The room was shabby and not a bit inviting.
All these problems challenged us. Sophie and I figured that we had one option to make the best of it and enjoy ourselves! We realized it was about time to escape the false undersea atmosphere of the room. To make a comfortable room out of it, we set out to clean the room, put away all the decorations that gave us unpleasant feelings and drew the curtains open. Soon, to our relief, a tidy, bright room came into our sight. A big broad smile spread over our face. As the old saying goes: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. ”

The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she always had a sweet smile. After the meal, she paid with a one hundred dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to get change, but the old lady had slipped right out of the door by the time she came back. The waitress wondered where the lady could be. Then she noticed something written on the napkin,“You don't owe me anything. Someone once helped me out the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you.” Under the napkin were four more $100 bills. Totally touched, she failed to utter a single word, tears blurring her eyes.
There were tables to clear and people to serve, but the pregnant waitress felt a rush of warmth. That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard. She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, “Everything is going to be all right”. It is then that the waitress decided to pass the chain of love on.

You dropped your wallet.” “Thank you, dear,” said the gentleman, taking the wallet. Then, noticing how poorly dressed she was, he said, “Why didn’t you keep the wallet, my child?” “Because that would be stealing,” replied Kitty. “But,” she continued honestly, “before I thought I must give it back to you, I did wish I could keep it, for then I could buy Mamma a red apple.” Hearing this, the man handed her a dollar and said,” You are a good girl. Take the dollar so that you can buy your mother a red apple.” Then, the man said goodbye to Kitty and left. With the dollar, Kitty happily ran to the store.
The store owner saw the familiar girl rushing in, one dollar in hand. He quickly picked out the biggest, roundest, and reddest apple and gave it to Kitty. Taking the apple, kitty was very happy and handed the dollar to the owner. But the owner didn’t take it, saying, “You keep it and the apple is free.” Kitty was so pleased and thanked the kind store owner. Then, she went back home. Her mother was surprised to see the apple and the dollar. Kitty told her mother the whole story. Her mother kissed her and said, “You see, dear, it always pays to be honest and truthful.”

Carrying an LED flashlight, Andre headed out into the snowstorm. “ Follow me! ” said Andre quickly. Waving his flashlight, Andre led her to his home after he met Shannon on the road.
Once Shannon was inside their home, she was warmly welcomed. The Bouviers fed their unexpected guest, gave her a clean blanket and a pillow, and made her as comfortable as she could. 6.    Just then he spotted a man in a business suit passing by. “Help!” Jack shouted loudly, waving his hand crazily in the air. The man spotted him and ran over, then quickly bent down by the edge of the pool and put his hands under Mrs. Wilson’s shoulders. As Jack pushed her body forward, the man dragged her out. “She’s not breathing!” Jack cried. They lay Mrs. Wilson on her back and Jack started pounding on Mrs. Wilson’s chest, trying to imitate the CPR motions he’d seen in his first aid class.
Mrs. Wilson lay still, and Jack kept pressing. Suddenly water gushed from Mrs. Wilson’s mouth. She was breathing! Jack let out a deep, thankful breath. Being told how she was rescued, Mrs. Wilson thanked them but complained in a weak voice, “Jack pushed too hard. I’m sure he gave me bruises!” Jack grinned. Mrs. Wilson was definitely back to her old self. “The world needs more young people like you,” the man shook Jack’s hand, “That was very impressive.” Jack laughed. “I’m not sure Mrs. Wilson was very impressed! But I’m glad she’s okay.”

7.But then, one day when I was in the area, I made a big decision. Despite knowing that it was a terrible business decision, I loaded a red mahogany piano onto my little truck. I delivered the piano to the old lady. I placed the new piano in the house, advised her and the little girl to keep the chickens off it and left. I was sure that I had just thrown away a new piano. To my surprise, the payments came in on time with a thank-you note every month.
Twenty years later while sitting at a bar, I heard the most beautiful piano music behind me. Looking around, I saw a lovely young woman playing a very nice grand piano. Stunned by her great performance, I moved to a table beside her. She stopped and smiled at me politely, “Aren’t you the man who sold my grandma a piano a long time ago?” It didn’t ring a bell, so she started to explain. And I suddenly remembered. My Lord, it was her, the little barefoot girl in the feed sack dress! I was so glad that my kindness did make a real difference. (165w)

8.He woke up, staring at me angrily. The smell of alcohol on his breath was overwhelming and I stepped back. I can’t remember exactly what I said to him — probably something no better than, “Mate, are you OK?” Still lying on the bench seat, the man went quiet, looked up and fixed his eyes on mine. Then his eyes filled with tears and he said to me, “God sent you, didn’t he?” A little surprised, the only reply I could think of was, “Well... yes, he asked me to take you home”.
Much to my relief, the man agreed to get into my car. While driving him home, he wept and poured out the sorrows of his heart. Suffering multiple tragedies, he turned to the only source of comfort he knew: the bottle. I patiently comforted him that everyone would encounter various kinds of difficulties. If we faced them positively, all the difficulties would disappear. At his door, he thanked me sincerely and promised not to drink again. From the steady look in his eyes, I learnt a lesson: If life becomes hard, soften it with random acts of kindness.
