“Will you do me a favor, Achenyo?” Mama called as she looked up from her weaving. Beside her was a pile of wild-grass stalks (秆). Mama took a stalk, laid it along the length of the half-finished bag, and began to weave (编织). In the corner were pots of dyes (染料) she’d use to paint the finished bags. “Will you get me some water for the dyes?” “Of course, Mama!” Achenyo picked up a pot as she ran outside. She didn’t like weaving, although it was a tradition for a mother to pass on the trade to her daughter. Outside, Achenyo called to her neighbor Ajuma. Both girls, with pots balanced on their heads, made their way to the river.
Achenyo and Ajuma soon arrived at the water’s edge, and they found a huge surprise. The river was gone! In its place was a blanket of dark green leaves and lavender-colored (淡紫色的) flowers. “Oh no!” Achenyo cried. “Mama won’t have water to mix the dyes for her bags.” When the adults arrived at the riverbank, they shook their heads, saying “They’ve struck again!”
Last year, the rainy season had brought an invasion (入侵) of water hyacinths. The plants had covered the river and left no room to dip a pot to get water. And now they were back. The adults walked into the water. They began pulling up water hyacinths and throwing them onto the riverbank. When they’d cleared enough plants, the girls filled their pots with water. A pile of water hyacinths lay on the riverbank. What a shame to waste such pretty flowers, Achenyo thought. She picked some for Mama, and then the girls headed home. Each day, they found the river covered by water hyacinths as if no one had cleared the waterfront (水边地) the day before. To fill their pots, they again had to pull up and throw water hyacinths onto the riverbank. The pile on the sand grew taller.
One day, as Achenyo moved an armful of dried water hyacinths out of her way, she had an idea. Carrying the plants under her arm, she ran home.

2.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Why do you want to be a teacher?” I never explain it without the usual obvious reasons, such as my love of children or wanting to make a difference. It was not until I met Kathy that I truly knew the reason I wanted to be a teacher.
I was running a summer program. A seventh grader, a young girl walked through the door and I thought to myself, “This is going to be a long summer.” She was a student at my school, and I was well aware of who she was even though I was an eighth teacher. Her reserved place in the principal office was well known by the eight teachers as we prepared our sales for those students who were going to need extra attention.
I racked my brain (绞尽脑汁) trying to figure out what I was going to do with her. I usually had my older students act as classroom helpers for the younger grades, so I decided that this would be a good spot for her. Little did I know how that one little decision would change my life.
Kathy transformed before my eyes. She showed love and patience with the children in that classroom. She was responsible and caring and she began referring to those students as “her kids”. I witnessed a natural teacher blooming. I had an unforgettable summer with Kathy.
Soon the school year began and Kathy and I were together again. This time I was her teacher. Kathy continued to volunteer with “her kids” at my after-school program. Her smile was infectious and her sense of humor amazing. Before graduation, Kathy thanked every person there for believing in her and giving her a chance. She was truly grateful. There was not a dry eye on the scene.
We continued to keep in touch when Kathy went to high school and then university. Once she sent a letter to me, thanking me again, for giving her a chance and believing in her. She also stated that she had made her final decision and she was going to be a teacher! I don’t know I could have felt more pride than I did at that moment.

3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A few days before Christmas, a friend called me to see if I wanted to take a coffee. As a new mum, I was always looking for an excuse to get out of the house, so I agreed immediately. About halfway through my story, I noticed my friend wasn’t listening anymore. She was clearly distracted (分散注意力) by something over my shoulder. Turning around, I noticed a woman trying to get her bank card to work.
“Do you know her?” I asked my friend.
“I do. Give me a minute. I’m going to go and see if I can help,” she replied, standing up to walk over to her.
A few minutes later, my friend returned to the table with the woman. The woman looked upset, pale, and tired. After I was introduced, my friend asked her if she was okay. She said she wasn’t and burst into tears. We comforted her. She was a little embarrassed by her emotional response. Wanting to put her at ease, I quickly told her not to worry. I shared that I was a new mum and I’d already cried fourteen times that day. She laughed at my silly confession (坦白), but soon her tears were flowing again.
For the next forty-five minutes, my friend and I both sat and patiently listened to her. She lost her husband before Christmas and their bank accounts were now left nothing. We tried our best to cheer her up. My friend even tried to give her some cash, which she refused. When she finally got up to leave, she removed her tears, thanked us both for listening, and walked out.
As I drove home, I couldn’t stop thinking about how sad she looked when she left the coffee shop. I decided to make Christmas a little better for her family by buying them a few gifts. As soon as I got home, I called my friend and excitedly explained my plan. She agreed with me that it would probably be best if she delivered the presents and said they were from an anonymous (匿名) donor.
On Christmas Eve morning, I drove to my friend’s house and dropped off a large box of food and a few presents for the three of them, all addressed from Santa Claus.

Eric was a nine-year-old boy who lived with his single mother, Stacey and sister, Lily. They lived a hard life. Eric felt bad for their situation but worse for himself, especially in school.
Eric’s leather boots were worn out. They didn’t protect his feet from the rain, and his socks became totally wet as water went through the holes in his shoes. Stacey attempted to fix the holes but it was no use. Eric still walked to school with that pair of broken shoes. How much he wished he could also have new comfortable and expensive shoes his classmates wore!
One day, Eric returned from school and complained to Stacey, “It was raining today. Water has leaked into my shoes again. I hate my boots! Why can’t you get me new ones?” Stacey was sad and helpless. “I spent our last savings on your sister’s medicine. She’s sick. Eric you know that. You need to act like a responsible big brother!” she answered. Tears welled up in Eric’s eyes. “I hate you!” he shouted. “You only care about Lily! You don’t love me!” Then he cried and ran to his room.
After preparing dinner, Stacey went to his room with his dinner plate. “I’m sorry, Eric,” she whispered to comfort him. “We’re going through a very tough journey recently. But I’ll get you new shoes in the future.” However, Eric refused to listen to her.
The next day, when Eric went to class, he took his seat quietly and hid his feet under his chair, as usual. He was embarrassed to show his boots. As the math teacher Mrs Fletcher entered the class, all the students greeted her. “Today, we have a very special friend with us,” she smiled. “Everyone, please welcome Ben, your new classmate.” Soon after, a boy with a pair of crutches(拐杖)entered. The new boy only had one leg. Eric was shocked. He and all his classmates thought how unlucky Ben was and that he must be very shy and sad.

One Summer’s day, my Uncle Rick, Isaiah and I went to Police Outpost Lake to fish. I’d learned to fish from my dad. He’d taught me everything I knew about fishing. Then, he passed away.
“Why do I have to be so quiet?” asked Isaiah.“All those birds are making way more noise than I ever could!”
I ignored him. Pulling back on my rod(杆),I remembered my dad’s words.“Jacob, gently bring your rod back. Keep the line up high.”Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of a few great northern loons(潜鸟)gathering together not far from the shoreline. What were they doing there? Maybe it was a family? One loon, making terrible sounds, swam away from the group, towards me.
My dad had been a fish and wildlife officer. He travelled all over the province, working away from home for days on end, especially in the spring and fall. When he returned, we sat on the couch together, and he told me stories of life on the road. My dad loved his job, especially the part where he protected nature from humans.
“Isaiah! Come here!”“Now who’s shouting?”“Just get over here. Now!”
The loon stopped in the shallow water near shore. It was so close, and we could see its bright red eyes. Strangely, the bird’s wings were held tight against its body.
“Look at that beak(鸟喙)!” said Isaiah.“It could easily stab(刺)us to death with that thing!”
Walking into the water, getting closer to the loon, we both saw thin wire wrapped around its neck. Reaching down, I touched its head, my heart racing. I could see there was a shiny red hook in its body, and fishing line was wrapped tightly around its neck. Left like this, the loon couldn’t fly or fish or survive. It was asking us to help!
“Go to grab the scissors. I’ll pick it up, and you cut away the line,”I said to Isaiah, who ran away and came back with the tiny pair of scissors.

83-year-old Agatha Stones was a woman who had given birth to four kids. When these kids grew up, they all moved away from home to start their own lives.
All of Agatha’s kids had become mostly interested in material things but ignored the importance of family. “Business has been a lot, mom,” the eldest, Brian, would say. Sally, John and Mary were in their late 30s and had yet to settle down. It hurt Agatha that none of her four kids remembered to visit her or even call her.
One day, she was complaining about it to her friend Sharon. “I just don’t understand why these kids don’t want to return home to spend time with me,” she said.
“Is that what is eating you?” her friend asked.
“Yes, it is,” Agatha said. “My lawyer has asked me to write my will (遗嘱). I have no idea how I’ll share the little I have among all four of my kids.”
“I know what you can do to determine that,” Sharon proudly said. And then, she offered Agatha a shocking plan.
A couple of days later, a piece of news came: Agatha suddenly fell ill and was hospitalized. Despite that, none of her four kids visited her. A few more days later, all four children received a message stating that their mom had passed away. Within hours, they all arrived home to discuss how they would share the inheritance (遗产).
Suddenly, a voice cut through the discussion. “Will you guys give all that a rest and focus on what has brought us all together? The death of our mother!” the youngest daughter, Mary, shouted. There was a brief pause at her outburst, but as soon as the silence was broken by a phone buzzing, they went on.
Unknown to them, Sharon was listening in on their conversation and, after a few minutes, she walked into the room, and told them to enter another room to say their final goodbyes to their mother.

“SAI BABA! Sai Baba! Sai Baba! Hahahaha!”
“Today is Shimla’s big day! We have a celebrity visiting our city! Hahahaha!” Rani’s cheekcs burned with embarrassment and tears stung her eyes as she elbowed her way to the exit through the crowd of teasing boys in the packed school bus. It wasn’t the first time she’d been called Sai Baba, after the famous Hindu holy man (印度圣人) she’d seen on TV with his trademark afro (爆炸式卷发) towering over his head.
But this time had to be the worst. Rani jumped off the school bus, angry thoughts hovering inside Rani’s head as she marched home in the drizzling rain. Why did her hair have to curl like a giant cotton candy balloon just when she wanted it to behave? Why, why. why, fumed Rani as she turned the back door key.
“Rani, is that you?” Mama called from the family room. Suddenly Rani’s cousins, Amit and Sumit, came charging toward her. “How many eggs does Rani have in that nest on her head?” screamed Amit. “Let me get that wig (假发) off Rani’s head!” shouted Sumit. Before she could think, Rani had fled out the door and went back up the road she’d walked down minutes before. Halfway up, she slid unseen behind a green curtain of bamboo. Tearing through the wild growth, she made her way down a narrow mud path into a clearing (空地). She threw her schoolbag on the ground and breathed hard.
“I hate my hair!” she cried. Collapsing on her schoolbag, she bitterly remembered the time she’d spent trying to smooth her hair in vain. Before long, she fell into a fitful sleep.
“RANI! RAA-AANI!”
Rani woke up to Mama’s calls. She sounded anxious. “I’ll never go home,” she promised herself darkly. Mama let Amit and Sumit make fun of me. Papa would never have done that. He would listen to me and stand by my side. The minutes wore on. Alone in her secret hideout, Rani watched the shadow of Mamna get longer and begin to disappear as dusk fell.

It was a bright May afternoon along the Maryland coast, and Jonathan Bauer, 51, an expert doctor at a hospital, and his 13-year-old daughter, Ava were were driving with the windows down as they headed home on the 1.4-mile-long, two-lane Route 90 bridge, which stretches across the shallow waters of Assa-woman Bay. Suddenly, the calm was disturbed by the squeal of tires.
Not far ahead of them, a black pickup truck was sliding from one lane to the other. To the Bauers’ horror, it ran into a concrete barrier, turned over the SUV directly ahead of them, and came to rest hanging over the railing (栏杆) of the bridge. Bauer hit the brakes in time to avoid the vehicles in his path.
“Ava, are you OK?” he asked after stopping the car. She was shaken, but otherwise unhurt. And then a scream. It came from the pickup, which had come to rest on its right side. The back passenger compartment (车厢) and truck bed hung out past the guardrail, 30 or more feet above the waters of the bay. The driver’s door threw open and a man climbed out. He dropped to the ground, and then ran to the railing. Bauer ran up beside him. The man pointed down, saying something in Spanish. In the water was a car seat. Bobbing (颠簸) next to it was a girl, about two years old, pink dotted dress, brown hair, brown eyes, terrified, floating on her back, kicking and splashing and screaming.
From around the truck, more screaming came from its other passengers who had gotten off the truck and were looking down into the water.
The situation quickly went from bad to frightening when the baby girl rolled over onto her stomach. Bauer waited for the pickup driver to do something, but he didn’t move. Maybe he was in shock. “Ava!” Bauer shouted, bending to remove his shoes. “Stay by the car!”

9.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Be safe, babe,” I said to my wife, Ashley, holding her tight. She would be on a four-month tour of duty, flying C-17s in the Middle East. “Good luck with the pup,” she said. A look of concern crossed her face. “You’re going to need it. I’ll be praying for you.” Ashley was referring to Pistol, the five-year-old golden dog we’d adopted just 12 hours earlier.
Picking him up from the foster family, Ashley and I watched Pistol crash around the family’s living room, knocking over furniture and ignoring commands. Finally the family got him on a leash(狗绳) and turned him over to us. Now I would be alone with him for four months. Most of my life, I had a very clear objective: becoming a devoted husband and affectionate dad who taught his kids well. So I decided to take this chance to learn how to be a father.
I returned home from seeing Ashley off and opened the front door with trepidation(惶恐). Pistol was in the living room, scratching. He saw me and rushed over, knocking me against the door. Just as quickly, he rushed away and crashed around the room. I needed to get this dog outside or he was going to destroy the house. I grabbed a leash and managed to clip it to his collar. When he realized we were going outside, his tail wagged so hard that his entire body shook.
When we were out, he behaved crazily, charging at anything moving. Every time he behaved badly, I corrected him. Not harshly but persistently. And I praised him whenever he did the right thing. To my astonishment, Pistol caught on. That was it: consistent correction paired with positive reinforcement(加强). I had discovered the secret to training this energetic and undisciplined dog.

10.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Many years ago, when I was a young man in my twenties, I worked as a salesman for a St. Louis piano company. Every time we would advertise in Southeast Missouri, we would receive a reply on a postcard which said, “Please bring me a new piano for my little granddaughter. I can pay $10 a month with my egg money.” The old lady scrawled on and on and on that postcard until she filled it up.
Of course, we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month. No finance company would carry a contract with payments that small, so we ignored her postcards.
One day, however, I happened to be in that area calling on other replies, and out of curiosity I decided to look the old lady up: The old lady lived in a small and dirty house in the middle of a cotton field. There were chickens in the house. Obviously, the old lady could not have qualified to purchase anything on credit. Her little granddaughter was about 10, barefoot. I explained to the old lady that we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month. However, she still sent us the same postcard every six weeks.
A couple of years later, I owned my own piano company, and when I advertised in that area, the postcards started coming to me. For months, I ignored them.
But then, one day, despite knowing that I was about to make a terrible business decision, I delivered the piano to the old lady and told her I would carry the contract myself at $10 a month with no interest, and that would mean 52 payments. I took the new piano in the house and placed it where I thought the roof would be least likely to rain on it. It old her and the little girl to try to keep the chickens off of it, and I left — sure I had just thrown away a new piano.
But the payments came in, all 52 of them as agreed — sometimes with coins taped to a 3×5inch card in the envelope. It was incredible!
So, I put the incident out of my mind for 20 years.

1.Paragraph 1:
“Mama, will you teach me to weave?” asked Achenyo eagerly. Mama laughed. It was her wish to pass on the weaving trade to her daughter. But she was doubtful about the water hyacinth stalks. Achenyo showed Mama how difficult it was to break a stalk. “I’ll teach you. But if it doesn’t turn out right, I’ll say I told you so.” Achenyo was pleased. “Thank you, Mama!” They wove together every day after school. It was a tricky job. The stalks hurt Achenyo’s palms, but she was determined to make something beautiful.
Paragraph 2:
One afternoon, Achenyo held up her finished work made from water hyacinths. “Mama, I’ve made a school bag to carry my books!” Mama looked over Achenyo’s handiwork. It was neatly woven and well decorated. She clapped her hands in pleasure. Achenyo smiled, “I told you so, Mama!” And they also showed it to their neighbors. Inspired by the delicate school bag, they also began to use the stalks to make bags and baskets. By the end of the rainy season, the villagers were eager to go to the river every morning to harvest water hyacinths. They no longer thought of the plant as an invader, but a provider.

3.范文
Once my friend had delivered everything, she told me the kids had been overjoyed to receive their presents. However, their mum seemed embarrassed to receive charity from a stranger and felt she couldn't accept the packages. My friend insisted that Santa didn't accept returns. Finally, the mum accepted the kindness and show gratitude to my friend for bringing them.
From that day forward, I understood the power of kindness and never missed an opportunity to spread some around. A praise to a friend or co-worker has so much more meaning for me now. Holding the door or even smiling at a stranger on the street is acknowledgment that I see them. Going out of my way for someone helps me connect with people on a deeper level. I may not be changing the entire world with these actions, but they can easily change someone's world when done from the heart, at Christmas time and all around the year.

At that moment, Mrs Fletcher asked Ben to introduce himself. To everyone’s surprise, Ben walked to the platform cheerfully and confidently. After greeting them in a joyful voice, he shared many hobbies and his loving family. At the end of his speaking, Ben added, “Even though I have lost a leg, I never feel bad for my situation. I’m grateful for what I have.” All of the students were touched by Ben’s words and clapped for his courage and optimism from the bottom of their hearts.
Inspired by Ben, Eric realized he should appreciate what he had. After school, he gladly walked home. When reaching home, he knocked at Mom’s door and apologized sincerely, “Mom, I’m sorry I shouted at you. I should thank you for everything you have done for me and I will take good care of Lily like a responsible big brother.” Hearing what he said, Stacey hugged Eric tightly, with relieved tears pouring down her cheeks silently. From that day on, Eric became confident and didn’t hide his feet under his chair any more.

Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes for a second to calm myself. Somehow I felt my dad’s presence, like he was standing shoulder to shoulder with me in the shallow water.“Jacob, the bird won’t hurt you. It needs your help. I am here and will guide you through this.”My hands were shaking, but I bent down to pick up the loon. Taking it carefully under its wings, I held it out at arm’s length, afraid that it might stab me with its beak.
“Hurry and cut the line!”I said. Isaiah shuffled closer. Using the scissors, he cut away the fishing line from around the loon’s neck. Finally, he set the loon free. I patted the loon’s head, a gesture of gratitude that it hadn’t used its beak as a weapon. As I set it down on the water, it flapped its wings and flew away. Back onshore, Uncle Rick had been watching,“Boys, I’m awfully proud of you both. That was spectacular. You worked together, helped each other out,and kept that loon alive.”

6. After Brian, the same situation was repeated with Sally, and then with John, who came out weeping. When Mary walked into the room and saw her mom, she screamed in happiness and ran into her mom’s arms. “I thought we had lost you,” she sobbed. It showed Agatha that Mary was the only one that had enough sadness about her death. “If I had to determine the person who would receive all my properties, it would be Mary,” Agatha told them later.
“But I believe in you all, so I hope that this has taught you a lesson,” she continued. Everyone stood there with a bright red face. That day became a big day to them. From then on, they all started to call and visit their mom more often. When the holidays came, they celebrated together as a big and harmonious family, because they started to realize home is where the heart is. Suddenly, leaves rustling, someone or something was making its way into the clearing. Rani froze. She knew about the dangerous animals—the foxes and snakes and even man-eater leopards—that lurked in the lush jungles. A shiver went down her spine. Hugging herself close, she crouched lower, not daring to move a muscle. Tiny night bugs bit into her soft flesh and hunger pangs wracked her belly. Rani was tortured by such a disastrous day! She held her breath as the rustling grew louder, her eyes scanning the bushes frantically. Suddenly, the thick leaves parted, and a dark form stepped into the clearing. Rani’s heart leaping with fear, she opened her mouth to scream.
The next moment Papa was sitting beside her. Relief and joy flooded through Rani. She flung her arms around Papa and clung to him. “Rani! What’s wrong?” a visibly relieved Papa asked. Rani hesitated at first, but then broke down in tears, “I hate my hair!” She poured out everything about teasing. “And that’s not all,” Rani sobbed. “Mama even let Amit and Sumit get away with it.” Papa sighed, stroked her disheveled hair and planted a soft kiss on her forehead. “I know it’s tough being teased by those kids, but you can’t let it get to you. Look, you are beautiful just the way you are!” Papa said soothingly. Together, they sat in silence for a while, until Rani’s tears dried up and she felt ready to face the world again.

Seeing the little girl floating on her chest ten feet away, Bauer swam to her with all his strength and lifted her out of the water swiftly. However, the toddler’s critical condition had Bauer’s heart in his mouth, heartbeat racing wildly. In no time he collected himself as a professional to offer timely assistance standing straight, lying her against his shoulder and hitting hard at her back with the flat of his hand. With another hit on the back and retches followed by a breath, Bauer sensed the beautiful feeling of little fingers holding him around the neck.
Paragraph 2:
Her eyes opened now, focused on him, and he could hear ambulance coming this way. Minutes later, much to everyone’s relief, the girl was rushed to hospital in an ambulance, and Bauer breathed a sigh of relaxation ultimately and hugged his own daughter on the bridge, with his eyes glittering in the sun. Soon they were informed gratefully the toddler suffered a broken shoulder but was otherwise uninjured. 9. I corrected him when he was wrong and rewarded him with praise and treats when he was good. Pistol calmed down on the leash. He stopped eating the plants. He came when I called him. The more we worked together, the more loving Pistol became. He thrived on the structure and consistency. Maybe his previous life had been like my childhood: unstable, without much affection.
Pistol and I were both different when Ashley returned. The loneliness of being left behind had become more bearable alongside my four-legged companion. And something deeper had shifted. I’d always wondered if I was up to the task of being a good husband and father. I’d had positive role models—teachers, a coach, my best friend’s dad—yet there was no guarantee I’d live up to their example. So far, I’ve done okay with Pistol. Maybe I have a chance.

10. Then one day, as I was sitting at the bar having an after-dinner drink, I heard the most beautiful piano music behind me. Looking around, I saw a lovely young woman playing a very nice grand piano. Stunned by her great performance, I moved to a table beside her. She stopped and smiled at me politely, “Aren’t you the man who sent my grandma a piano a long time ago?” It didn’t ring a bell, so she started to explain. And I suddenly remembered. My goodness, it was her, the little barefoot girl. I wanted to know more about the girl.
She told me her name was Elise and since her grandmother couldn’t afford to pay for lessons, she had learned to play by listening to the radio. After practicing hard, she could play many songs. Then, she was admitted to a music school where she was offered a scholarship. She expressed her deep gratitude to me. She said, “ If you hadn’t given me this piano, I wouldn’t be where I am right now.” I felt proud of her and also told that it was her grandma’s persistence and love that made her achieve her dream.
