We’ve all been there. You’re working on a big project that needs to be finished by the end of the day, and somebody interrupts (打断) you to stop your work for a short period of time. For example, they show you photos of their vacation, or they tell you about their weekend. While those interruptions can be annoying, new research from the University of Cincinnati says that they could have some real benefits as well.
Researchers surveyed 111 people twice a day for three weeks, asking them questions about their experiences at the office that day. The survey asked them if they had been interrupted at work, how mentally tired they were, and how satisfied they were with their job.
The study found that while interruptions can have a negative influence on a worker’s productivity (效率), the social aspect of stopping work to talk to a coworker can help them feel more like they belong. That is to say, they feel comfortable or welcome in the situation or place.
The lead study author Harshad Puranik said that this feeling of belonging in the workplace can increase a worker’s job satisfaction, which is a feeling of happiness because one’s wants or needs have been met, even if the work itself is being negatively affected by the interruption.
If you still don’t want to be interrupted at work, there are some things you can do. For example, you can get to the office before anybody else arrives, so you have time to work alone, turn your phone off, or just tell people that you are too busy to talk.
