My husband Mike had been working in Florida for five months. Our 5-year-old daughter Kallie missed him very much. So Kallie and I were flying to Florida to spend a week with him.
The plane was full. Because we did not get our boarding passes (登机牌) until we arrived at the gate, Kallie and I couldn't get seats together. Kallie was nervous about the trip and had counted on me reading to her the whole way. I asked the passengers next to me if they would change places with Kellie or me. They all said no. Meanwhile, a mother and her two children several rows ahead of us were also in the same situation. The mother could hold her baby, but her 6-year-old son had to sit with strangers. And nobody offered to help her.
At that time, I saw a group of students on our flight. The students' leader stood up and said to the woman: “Ma'am, I think we can help you.” He spent 5 minutes rearranging (重排) his group so there was space for the family to sit together. A smile came on the mother's face.
Suddenly, the man sitting next to the leader turned around to me and asked: “Would you and your daughter like our seats?” We changed seats and being together made our trip so much better.

If you feel stressed at school, what can you do to make yourself happier? Some may eat their favorite food or listen to some music. Others may go for a walk or get some exercise. A new study found another great way to lower students' stress—playing with dogs.
Scientists studied 105 students between the ages of eight and nine. 35 trained dogs and their trainers also took part in the test. The children were divided into 3 groups. The students in the first group spent 20 minutes with a dog and its trainer. They watched the trained dogs perform and even played with them. They did this twice a week for 4 weeks. The second group spent the same amount of time doing exercise to relax. The last group did neither of these things.
During this time, the scientists recorded the students' cortisol levels. Cortisol is a stress hormone (激素). The more stressed you feel, the more cortisol you will have in your body. What did the scientists find? Both the second and third groups showed rises in cortisol levels. The first group, however, showed no big increase. And the children in this group had the lowest cortisol levels right after playing with the dogs.
According to the study, students enjoy playing with dogs, and it helps them become happier. The stress hormone falls over time this way, which is good for students' health. But here comes the next question: Is 20 minutes of playtime with a dog the best amount of time? Scientists are going to keep working to find out the answer.

Sometimes we fall in love with something at once and sometimes it takes long. The same is true with poems. If we're lucky enough, we open a book and find a poem that attracts us at once. But usually we need to spend la little time or make a little effort to truly understand a poem. 36
Reading a poem repeatedly will deepen your understanding of it. 37 And sometimes you're just not in the right mood the first time you read a poem, but later it touches your heart.
38 Poets like to use unusual words. Instead of skipping over (略过) these words or trying to guess their meanings, look them up.
39 Reading aloud will make the poem's rhythm (节奏;韵律) clear. Besides, a poet's reading is very helpful before we can understand the poem's meanings from where the poet places emphasis (重音) or pauses.
After you finish reading a poem, take a few moments to think about what it is saying. Sometimes its meanings are better understood through repeated reading. 40
It is hard to say whether there's a right or wrong way to read poems, but reading practices will enrich your experience, increase your enjoyment, and deepen your understanding of any poem.
A. Keep a dictionary at hand when you are reading poems.
B. Sometimes a poem that seems boring on first reading becomes interesting with more reading.
C. Other times they need our careful and deep thought on a poem.
D. Read aloud and listen to the poem.
E. Today I'd like to talk about reading poems in ways that make the experience better.
