Nike’s “Just do it” slogan is undoubtedly a killer line-and now it's been revealed that the inspiration for it came from an actual killer. The phrase, first used in a Nike advertisement in 1988 was brought to the firm by advertising executive Dan Wieden, who admitted that it was borrowed from something a Utah murderer spoke as he faced a firing squad. The murderer in question was Gary Gilmore, who was sentenced to death in 1977 for robbing and killing two men in Utah the previous year.
Mr Wieden, speaking at an advertising conference in February, said that he recalled this line in 1988 just before he had a marketing campaign meeting with Nike bosses, and decided to suggest a slightly changed version as a slogan. His company had been sent in by Nike to help them fight back rivals Reebok, who had just announced bigger profits. Mr Wieden said: “We came up with five different 30 second spots. The night before a meeting with Nike, I got concerned because there wasn’t a strong connection to them all. Some were funny, some were serious. So I thought we need a slogan to pull them together. I wrote about four or five ideas. I narrowed it down to the last one, which was ‘Just do it’. The reason I did that one was funny because I was recalling a man in Portland. He murdered a man and a woman, and was put before a firing squad. And they asked him if he had any final thoughts and he said: “Let’s do it. And for some reason I didn’t like ‘Let’s do it’ so I just changed it to ‘Just do it’.”
At first, he recalled, Nike hated the idea, but he won them round and the slogan appeared at the end of an advert featuring 80-year-old runner Walt Stack. It is now one of the most famous slogans in the world, described by Campaign magazine as “arguably the best tagline of the 20th century”.
4.Why does the author write this passage?
A.He intends to tell the story of Gary Gilmore the murderer.
B.He wants to say that the famous slogan was inspired by a murderer.
C.He attempts to say that Nike once had a difficult time in development.
D.He wants to introduce the best slogan of the20th century.

A.He said “Just do it” before he was put to death.
B.He competed against Nike in the 1980s.
C.He robbed and murdered two men in Utah..
D.He worked as the advertising executive at Nike.
6.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Nike was having a hard time in 1988.
B.Nike was very competitive around the world.
C.Gary Gilmore taught a good lesson about advertisement.
D.Either funny or serious slogans are not impressive.
7.What was Mr.Wieden concerned about?
A.His idea was funny as it was borrowed from a murderer.
B.He was not pleased with any of the five parts.
C.The advertising lines were too serious to be attractive.
D.A slogan was needed to connect five parts together.
America-the symbol of multiculturalism(多元文化主义), the great melting pot-qualifies as part of the developed world, right? Not quite, if we consider the state of second language learning in schools across the country. According to a 2018 study, Europe often tops the U.s.in foreign language education in schools. 92% of European students are learning a language in school. In America it’s only 20%. In more than 20 European countries, studying a foreign language for at least one year is compulsory. In comparison, only 10 states and Washington D.C. require learning a foreign language for graduation.
I went to a public school in Pennsylvania that ranked on Newsweek’s list of Americas top high schools in 2015. Foreign language learning was not a graduation requirement. A common response to such stories and statistics is: So what? Why should Americans care about learning another language when English has recently seemed to dominate as the official language of the world? The world is globalizing faster than we can imagine. More than half of the world’s population speaks more than one language. It is also increasingly becoming the need for success in this globalizing world. Having the ability to speak a second language opens up the possibility of traveling and immersing yourself in another part of the world. This means people can experience other cultures and traditions in places where you were previously kept away because you could not communicate in the language.
Learning a second language can be an efficient vehicle to help to bridge communities. Language is inseparable from culture, from politics, and from human identity. To speak another language means having access to a universe of different experiences and worldviews of another community of people.
However all these possibilities become realities only when students are taught a second language at a young age. A 2018 MIT study suggests that native-like proficiency in a language is achieved only if students start learning by ten years old. In Europe, the average age that a student starts learning a language is between six and nine. American schools should follow suit.
8.What can we know from the first paragraph?
A.America qualifies as a developed country in every aspect.
B.America suggests English be taught in all European countries.
C.America attaches little importance to foreign language education.
D.America is trying to make studying a foreign language compulsory.
9.What’s Americans common attitude towards the state of second language learning?
A.Less concerned. B.More worried. C.Less doubtful. D.Very supportive.
10.What does the underlined word “It” refer to in Paragraph 2?
A.The world’s globalization. B.Speaking a second language.
C.The possibility of traveling around. D.Experiencing other cultures and traditions.
11.What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A.Foreign languages could only be taught in schools.
B.Americans use a second language to communicate.
C.Languages can be separated from culture and politics.
D.Americans should start learning foreign languages early.
Arguments is on the menu tonight at the café La Chope. This evening, as on every Thursday night, psychologist Maud Lehanne is leading two of France’s favorite pastimes, coffee drinking and the “talking cure”. Here they are learning to get in touch with their true feelings. It isn’t always easy. They customers — some thirty Parisians who pay just under $2 (plus drinks) per session — are quick to intellectualize (高谈阔论), slow to open up and connect. “You are forbidden to say ‘one feels’ or ‘people think’,” Lehane told them. “Say ‘I think’ ‘Think me’.”
A café society where no intellectualizing is allowed? It couldn’t seem more un-French. But Lehanne’s psychology café is about more than knowing oneself: It’s trying to help the city’s troubled neighborhood cafes. Over the years, Parisian cafés have fallen victim to changes in the French lifestyle — longer working hours, a fast-food boom and a younger generation’s desire to spend more time at home. Dozens of new theme cafés appear to change the situation. Cafes focused around psychology, history, and engineering are catching on, filling tables well into the evening.
The city’s psychology cafés, which offer great comfort, are among the most popular places. Middle-aged homemakers, retirees, and the unemployed come to such cafes to talk about lover, anger, and dreams with a psychologist. And they come to Lehance’s group just to learn to say what they feel. There’s a strong need in Paris for communication, says Maurice Frisch, a café La Chope regular who works as religious instructor in a nearby church. “People have few real friends. And they need to open up.” Lehanne says she’d like to see psychology cafés all over France. “If people had normal lives, these cafés wouldn’t exist,” she says. “If life weren’t a battle, people wouln’t need a special place just to speak.” But then, it wouldn’t be France.
12.What are people encouraged to do at the caféLa Chope?
A.Learn a new course. B.Contact friends.
C.Show off their knowledge. D.Convey their true feelings.
13.How are cafés affected by French lifestyle changes?
A.They are less visited. B.They stay open for longer hours.
C.They have more people at night. D.They begin to offer fast food.
14.What are theme cafés expected to do?
A.Create more jobs. B.Provide better drinks.
C.Save the cafe business. D.Serve the community.
15.Why are psychology cafés accepted by so many people?
A.They bring people true friendship. B.They give people spiritual support.
C.They help people achieve their dreams. D.They connect all kinds of businesses.

In my twenties, I went far from home to study in America. Due to limited financial resources from my parents, I worked part-time on campus to pay for my bills. In addition, I did cleaning every Friday for an American family. If I was lucky enough, I could occasionally babysit a child for extra money.
Like most poor people, I had to be careful with every penny I spent, from food and clothing to rent and transportation. Because of a tight grocery budget, I couldn’t afford to buy fish, beef or certain other nutritious food. Due to an imbalanced diet, I would easily feel weak and listless.
As soon as Dai Mom realized that I was encountering financial hardship, she lovingly invited me to her home for dinner every Friday and weekend. In addition, whenever it was time to return home, she would always prepare me with some homemade dessert or food to take home. Her kind actions, like the seeds of love planted in my heart, profoundly changed my life. In particular, there was one event that I would always remember.
One early evening, while I was walking out of the library, I felt my blood sugar running low. I started to feel dizzy, and my hands started to shake a little. Searching my pockets, I found that I only had a few dollars left. I was dying for a free and tasty dinner. Without a second thought, I quickly headed for Dai Mom’s home, rather than go back to my apartment.
As I got to the door, Dai Mom immediately noticed my fatigue(疲劳). She seated me at the dining table, and before long, a plate of food was set in front of me on the table. “Have dinner. Don’t make yourself work so hard,’’ she said to me with a nice smile.
Staring at the meat, vegetables, and fish on my plate, I suddenly felt so spoiled that tears started welling up in my eyes, rolling down on my face, and dripping to the food on the plate. I gobbled up all the food with indescribably bitter-sweet feelings.

47.Paragraph 1:
To be specific, during that period of time, my extremely tight financial difficulties only allowed me $10 for my weekly groceries. So, when the food was brought to me, it was just like a Christmas gift from Heaven; to this day, I remember it as the best and most delicious dinner that I have ever had. Not only did the food satisfy my physical hunger, but also it deeply filled my spirit with genuine love. I was deeply moved by her.
Paragraph 2:
Dai Mom was an angel to be my guardian. She came by my side, not for a day, not for a month, but for many years. She gave me the considerate love that a mother gave to her own child. She let me know what the true love is. How lucky I am! A small act of love can make a great difference. In particular, because of her, I have now become a person who can pass her love to others in need of help or support.
