On Dec. 23rd 2019, the Chinese paddlefish, which had lived on earth for millions of years and was often considered a symbol of China, was officially announced extinct. What caused their extinction?

The main reason is human activities. On the one hand, the highly intensified fishing operations on the Yangtze River have caused irreparable destruction to its ecosystem and biodiversity, destroying vital habitats of the Chinese paddlefish. On the other hand, with China’s economy booming, the Yangtze River has become not only China’s busiest river for shipping  but a source of water for industrial production and a destination for polluted water, further exacerbating the living environment of many species. Eventually, the increasing, unrestrained human activities has made it impossible for the Chinese paddlefish to survive.

The extinction of the beloved species is a wake-up call, raising people’s awareness to the importance of wildlife conservation. Determined to heal the ecosystem of the Yangtze River. the Chinese government enacted its first 10-year fishing ban on the River and devoted billions of dollars to help fishermen develop new livelihoods. In my view, the fishing ban is a brave and essential step for China’s sustainable development and has set a good example for us citizens to follow for saving the environment and protecting wildlife are not only the government’s duty but everyone’s responsibility.

As historical record and our legacy from the past, tangible and intangible cultural heritages not only show the wide varieties of historical development processes, but also provide us with the insight to deal with contemporary problems. It is, therefore, of great importance for us to set about preserving those treasures of mankind.

Personally, I have tried to protect cultural heritages by spreading awareness on social media platforms. For instance, after visiting a cultural heritage site, I usually share beautiful phones taken by me online and introduce the intriguing stories behind each picture.
