Sichuan Opera is a local opera, and it is now facing a gap in inheritance (传承). Therefore, we cooperated with Mianyang Intangible Cultural Heritage Centre to create a simple and easytolearn Sichuan Opera exercise said Shen Junhua, who is in charge of organising the school's exercise between classes.

It's very different from normal exercises. After practising it, we found it very beautiful and became interested in it. Now, almost all of the students look forward to our daily exercise time and feel excited to do it.”

(2021·山东德州模拟)Is that person really glad to see me? Or is he just being polite? Some people struggle to tell an artificial smile from a truly happy one. And computers have found this task even more difficult. Recently, researchers have trained a programme to detect when a smile is genuine.

Visual computing researchers at the University of Bradford in the UK started with a software for analysing a changing facial expression. This programme can examine a video clip of a human head and identify specific details around the eyes, cheeks and mouth. Then the programme tracks the details relative to each other as the face smiles.

Next, the scientists had their programme evaluate two sets of video clips. In one subjects performed posed smiles. In the other, they watched a film that inspired genuine displays of emotion. The programme calculated the differences among the subjects' faces during the two clips. And it turns out that one's mouth, cheeks and eyes move differently when pretending to smile.

In particular, the muscles around the eyes shift 10 percent more for a real smile than they do for a fake one. These results are in the journal Advanced Engineering Informatics. A genuine smile is indeed in the eyes. The computer aids analysis of the exact weight distribution of human smiles across the face Hassan Ugail and Ahmad Aldahoud say.

The researchers suggest their work could improve a computer's ability to analyse facial expressions and thus to interact more smoothly with humans. But their real accomplishment is in proving Tyra Banks right: “You have to smile with your eyes.”

Gesturing with hands while speaking is a common human behaviour, but no one knows why we do it. Now, a group of researchers reports that gesturing adds emphasis to speech but not in the way researchers had thought.

Gesturing while speaking, or talking with your hands is common around the world. Many communications researchers believe that gesturing is either done to stress important points, or to explain specific ideas, which you can think of as the drawing in the air. But there are other possibilities. For example, it could be that gesturing, by changing the size and shape of the chest, lungs and vocal muscles, affects the sound of a person's speech.

Researchers decided to test whether this idea was true, or just so much hand waving. The team had volunteers move their dominant hand (优势手) as if they were cutting wood, while continuously saying a as in cinema. They were instructed to keep the a sound as steady as they could.

Despite that instruction, when the team played audio recordings to other people, they found the listeners could hear the speakers' gestures. When the listeners were asked to move their arms to the rhythm, their movements matched perfectly with those of the original speaker.

Because of the way the human body is constructed, hand movements influence torso (躯干) and throat muscles. Gestures are tightly tied to amplitude (振幅). Rather than just using your chest muscles to produce air flow for speech, moving your arms while you speak can add voice emphasis. And you can hear someone's motions, even when they're trying not to let you.

Some language researchers don't like this idea, because they want language to be all about communicating the contents of your mind, rather than the state of your body. But we think that gestures are allowing the voice signal to carry additional information about bodily tension and motion. It's information of another kind says UConn psychologist and director of the Centre for the Ecological Study of Perception and Action James Dixon, one of the authors of the paper.

    D. Different gestures around the world.

    A 细节理解题。根据第二段中的例子可知这个研究主要证明手势语能够影响人的声音。故选A

    14. Why can listeners “hear” speakers' gesture?

    A. Because gestures go with different amplitude.

    B. Because speakers and listeners are too familiar.

    C. Because volunteers have the same dominant hands.

    D. Because speakers give secret instructions in their speech.

A 细节理解题。根据第五段中Gestures are tightly tied to amplitude (振幅)可知不同的手势语有不同的振幅因而听到的人能够通过振幅判断出说话者的手势。故选A

    15. Some language researchers disagree with the study because they think

    A. the body states can communicate thoughts

    Will COVID19 Kill the Handshake?

The handshake might date back to the 14th century, when knights and soldiers would extend their unclenched (松开的) right hands towards each other in greeting to show that they were carrying no weapons.

1   Or rather, its tendency for picking up and holding onto germs from polluted surfaces, or from  our own eyes or noses when we have certain illnesses. Those germs can then be transferred into the hands of the people we greet, while we can pick up their germs. We then will probably touch our own eyes or noses or mouths, potentially sickening ourselves and restarting the cycle.

Now that a novel coronavirus is spreading fast, our hands are being cast in a new, doubtful light.   2   And lately, the Internet has been full of suggestions for socially acceptable ways to greet each other that don't involve passing germs along unintentionally from one person to the next.

3   In fact, the tradition of shaking hands isn't the only greeting to take a fresh look. A Maori tribe in New Zealand put the brakes on hongi, the traditional nosetonose hello.   4   Maybe people will stop making fun of the Hollywood air kiss, though it's not a huge improvement healthwise.

COVID19 is a real threat, and we shouldn't take the warning lightly. We may, indeed, need to keep our hands to ourselves for the time being. But we're not ready to send handshakes into the dustbin of history. Humans long for making a physical connection with friends. For now, perhaps, a regretful smile and nod might work as a shared acknowledgment.   5

    A. Could we hug each other or nod?

    B. Could this be the end of the handshake?

    C. As we all know, shaking hands has become a habit.

    D. After all, our friendly intentions were not to infect or be infected by others.

    E. These days, it would seem, the potential weapon isn't a knife, but the hand itself.

    F. We're being drilled in handwashing techniques as if we were all secondgraders.

    G. The French have been advised to abandon the familiar kiss on the cheek greeting.
