(2021·湖南名校高三联考)It was a very hot day in late summer. I was a young dad working in a local wood mill. It was dangerous, backbreaking work that paid very little. In the year I had worked there only four other people hadn't quit. Those of us who stayed did so only because there was no other work to find to support our families.
On this day the fans weren't working and all of us were covered in sweat and sawdust. When I looked around, every face I saw looked angry and frustrated. Suddenly, a voice called out,“Hey! There's a deer in here.” A lost little doe had wandered through the open loading bay doors and was now cowering (蜷缩) in between the huge stacks of wood. All of us stopped working and went looking for her as she ran about looking for a way out.
Now most people where I live hunt deer for meat in the fall, but also treat them with great kindness the rest of the year. Many will even buy 50 bags of corn to help feed them during the harsh winter months. It was no surprise then that all of us were soon quickly working together to free this little doe. By blocking off all the other routes we were able to guide her panic search back to the open bay doors. We watched as she jumped out of the building and back into the woods. Then we walked back in to work. I noticed something, though. On every face there was a joyful smile. It was as if this one single act of kindness had energised us again and reminded us of what life was all about.

A recent study found that eating fish at least twice a week led to a 50 percent reduction in the risk that a child would develop asthma (哮喘) between the ages of 11 and 14 — but only if the children carried a certain type of the fatty acid desaturase (去饱和酶) gene, which is known to be associated with lower levels of longchain omega3 fatty acids in the blood.
The researchers suspect that a diet that contains plenty of fish, especially oily varieties such as salmon, sardines and mackerel, could boost longchain omega3 levels and may protect against asthma by reducing inflammation (炎症) of the airways.
Of the children in the study with the gene variant (变体), the 25 percent who ate the most fish consumed at least 280 grams a week, equal to two adultsized amounts. They had half the risk of developing asthma compared with the 25 percent who consumed the least fish — almost none.
Seif Shaheen, senior author of the study, said: “It is possible that a poor diet may increase the risk of developing asthma, but until now most studies have taken ‘snapshot’, measuring diet and asthma over a short period of time. Instead, we measured diet and then followed up children over many years to see who developed asthma and who didn't.”
The study followed two groups of children, about 4,000 in the southwest of England and about 2,000 in Sweden. The diet of the English children was assessed when they were seven and they were tracked until they were 14.
Professor Shaheen said: “Although we cannot say for certain that eating more fish will prevent asthma in children, based on our findings, it would nevertheless be sensible for children in the UK to consume more fish, as few currently achieve recommended intake.”

A Tshirt that constantly monitors the heart's activity and detects abnormalities could help protect people against strokes. The Tshirt, which can be washed up to 35 times before it needs replacing, has been developed to improve the detection of dangerous heart conditions like atrial fibrillation (心房颤动), which causes an irregular heart rhythm and raises the risk of stroke.
At least one million people in Britain are known to have this condition; however, it's estimated that at least another 500,000 have it but haven't yet been diagnosed because they have no obvious symptoms. Some will have symptoms such as chest pain, dizziness and fatigue; but a large number of people have no idea they're ill until they suffer a stroke.
Detecting atrial fibrillation involves carrying out an ECG (心电图). Conventional ECGs are done in a hospital and involve highly trained teams of staff attaching up to 24 separate electrodes (电极) to different parts of the body to measure electrical signals. But most patients experience abnormal rhythms only intermittently (间歇地). This means the chance of picking them up during a short hospital check is slim.
Doctors sometimes issue patients with a device called a Holter monitor to wear under their clothes to try to pick up cardiac (心脏的) problems. This is an electronic box which clips onto your waistband and is connected to a series of electrodes worn on the upper part of your body. But the box itself is quite bulky, hard to hide beneath clothing and involves a dozen or more wires being attached to the patient's chest.
The Cardioskin Tshirt, which is made from cotton, could be a much more convenient alternative and can be worn 24 hours a day — meaning it is more likely to pick up any abnormal rhythms in the patient's heart. It has 15 tiny electrodes woven into the material which are strategically placed around the chest area to track the electrical signals from the heart as they travel across the main part of your body.
The electrodes are powered by a battery which can be removed easily when you need to wash the Tshirt and feed results to a microchip which then sends them out wirelessly to an app. This converts(转换) the data into an easytoread chart showing if the heart rate is abnormal. The results are shared with the patient's doctor so he or she can check the patient's heart without having to call them into the hospital.
Martin Cowie, a professor of cardiology at Imperial College London, said, “Cardioskin could be an important development for cardiologists.”

Keeping Safe in Your House During a Fire
Though you may not think you'll ever fall victim to a house fire, it's better to be prepared to avoid panicking. To increase your chances of survival, just follow these steps.
1. React as soon as you hear your smoke alarm go off. On hearing your smoke detector or alarm going off and seeing a fire, exit your home as safely as possible. 1
2. Safely exit through doors. If you don't see smoke at the door, open it slowly and pass through it after making sure the door feels cool. If there is a fire preventing you from exiting the room, close the door.
3. Protect yourself from smoke inhalation(吸入). Get low to the floor and crouch or crawl on your hands and knees to avoid the smoke. 2 Cover your nose and mouth if you have to walk by or through a heavily smokefilled room.
4. 3 If your clothes catch fire, immediately stop what you're doing, drop flat to the ground, and roll around until you put the fire out.
5. Prevent the smoke if you can't get out. 4 Close your door and cover all vents (通风口) and cracks (缝隙) around it with cloth or tape to keep the smoke out.
6. Call for help from a second story window. 5 You can take a sheet or something else — white preferably — and hang it out of the window to signify that you need help when the first responders get there.
A. If you can't escape your home, don't panic.
B. Stop, drop, and roll if your clothes catch fire.
C. You are probably a lot safer by closing doors.
D. Escape from a second story window if you can.
E. Smoke inhalation causes people to become unconscious.
F. Do not try to get your phone, valuables, or your other important possessions.
G. If you are trapped in your second story room, get to an area where people can find you.
