阅读下面材料，根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段，使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was deep into the night many years ago. The rain just came pouring down outside. An elderly man and his wife entered the lobby (大厅) of a small hotel in Philadelphia, USA.[悬念1]

Trying to get out of the rain, the couple approached the front desk hoping to get a room to stay in for the night.

“Could you possibly give us a room here？” the husband asked.

The clerk, a friendly young man with a winning smile, looked at the couple and explained that there were three conferences in the town. “All of our rooms are taken，” the clerk said. “But I can't send a nice couple like you out into the rain at one o'clock at night. Would you perhaps be willing to sleep in my room? It's not exactly a suite, but it will be good enough to make you comfortable for the night.”

When the couple declined, the young man pressed on. “Don't worry about me. I'll make out just fine，” the clerk told them. So the couple agreed.

As he paid his bill the next morning, the elderly man said to the clerk, “You are the kind of manager who should be the boss of the best hotel. Maybe someday I'll build one for you.[悬念2]”

The clerk looked at them and smiled. The three of them had a good laugh. As they drove away, the elderly couple agreed that the helpful clerk was indeed exceptional, as finding people who are both friendly and helpful isn't easy.

Three years passed. The clerk had almost forgotten the thing when he received a letter from the elderly man. It recalled that stormy night, when he offered his kind help to the elderly couple. In the envelope, there was a round­trip ticket to New York, and a letter asking the young man to pay them a visit. The young man decided to set out immediately.[悬念3]

三、分析段落开头语

“Do you still remember my promise years ago？” the elderly man said to the young man. The young man was puzzled and remembered nothing of what the elderly man had said years before. He just looked at the elderly man in surprise, shaking his head. “Well，” the elderly man went on. “I promised to build a hotel for you when I left your hotel. You are so kind and so helpful. I'm sure you will turn out to be a good boss in the future. I have firm trust in you.

“You must be joking，” the young man said. “I'm serious，” said the elderly man with a smile around his mouth. He then pointed to a great new building there. “That，” said the elderly man, “is the hotel I have just built for you. I hope you can take charge of it.” Thus, the young clerk became the first manager of the hotel. But he had never expected the turn of events that would lead him to become the manager of one of the world's most famous hotels.

1. 使用恰当的修饰词让描写更加生动。

A light rain was falling as my sister Jill and I ran out of the shop, eager to get home and play with the presents that our parents had prepared for us and our baby sister, Sharon. Across the street from the shop was a gas station where the Greyhound bus stopped, which was closed for New Year, but I saw a family standing outside the locked door, gathering closely together under the narrow overhang in an attempt to keep dry. I wondered briefly why they were there but then forgot about them as I raced to keep up with Jill.

“Thanks. You too，” the man replied. He was very tall and had to bend slightly to look into the car. Jill, Sharon, and I looked at the children, and they looked back at us.

“Are you waiting for the bus？” my father asked. The man said that they were. They were going to Birmingham, where he had a brother and chances of a job. Knowing the bus wouldn't come along for several hours, my father invited them to our home to shelter from the rain.

Once they settled in, my father looked back over his shoulder, handing them some tissues to wipe the rainwater off their faces.

When we got out of the car at our house, the three children ran through the front door happily. My mother noticed all their clothes were wet, so she found some of ours for them to change. Jill and I decided to share our New Year presents with the children. One of the girls chose Jill's doll and immediately hugged it to her breast. When the rain stopped, my father drove them to the station. As they drove away, I watched out the window as long as I could, looking back at their happy faces. That was the day when Jill and I learned the joy of making others happy.
