Most people have map apps on their phones that can show their locations (位置) and guide them to where they want to go. But how do these app systems know your locations at any time or place? They find you by using satellite navigation (satnav) systems (卫星导航系统).
A satnav system uses groups of satellites to find the users’ locations. This location information is then sent to a receiver, such as a smartphone.
The first satnav system is the Global Positioning System (GPS) (全球定位系统), which belongs to the United States. The system is the world’s 1eading satnav system. But China’s satellites are important for improving the satnav system. BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), has overtaken (超过) GPS in size, Japan’s Nikkei Asian Review reported. China sent BeiDou’s first navigation satellite into space in 2000. China also built a satnav system after the United States and Russia, People’s Daily reported. Until now, over 30 countries in Africa and the Middle East are using BeiDou system.

Have you ever seen lions dancing in the streets? The lions dance to the beat of a drum. Of course, they are not real lions. They are dancers in lion costumes. Lion dancing first started in China centuries ago. It is meant to bring good luck in the coming year.
Usually, a lion is made up of two dancers. One dancer controls the head. The other controls the tail.
“I think of it as a sport,” says Anthony Huang, aged 16. He is a member of the New York Chinese Freemasons Athletic Club. Anthony performs as the lion’s head. It can weigh 20 pounds. Lion dancing is important to Anthony. “This tradition really lifts me up,” he says.
Tong Panfeng, a lion dancing coach, is from Zhejiang province. He has a passion (热情) for this dying traditional performance. In 1993, Tong, then 26, saw the lion dancing in a movie and he was deeply attracted (吸引). After learning that his grandfather used to be a lion dancer when he was young, Tong wanted to inherit this amazing tradition. In 2017, Tong set up the Lion Dancing Team of Qiantong Central Primary School and taught lion dancing as an after-school course.
“Anyone can take up lion dancing. Lion dancing will continue to evolve (演变), but a team’s sense of community will never change. We call it a family”, Tong says. “It’s really great, because we always have each other’s backs.”
Far from just a performance, Tong believes that lion dancing is the symbol of the spirit of China and the pride of the Chinese people.
