When I was in my early teens, I was a huge fan of a local band. I saw them play many times, bought plenty of their posters and records, and was excited when I met them after shows. But as they grew and received more attention from the industry, they started making changes to their music. The rough edges(小缺点)that made them stand out were smoothed over. There wasn’t much left that I connected with. I watched as a band I loved turned into something I could hardly recognize.
I didn’t know much about the music industry at the time, but it was clear to me that they were taking a huge risk. Many artists, understandably, think they will find more commercial success by eliminating any aspect of their music or image that someone might find objectionable(令人反感的). However, what is unobjectionable is also unremarkable.
My experience made me think about what makes someone fall in love with a song or a band. It’s different for everyone, I’m sure, but I think one of the key factors that make an artist connect with a fan is realness. When artists write what they think people want to hear instead of what they want to express, they are missing out on points of connection that can turn a casual(偶然)listener into a super fan.
This experience also made me think about what role I wanted to play in the music industry. I knew by then that I didn’t have the talent to be an artist myself. But I loved learning about the music industry. I loved doing research on what makes an artist successful and why. When I listened to a new artist or saw a band play, I wanted to find out what made them special, protect it, and share it with the world. I eventually figured out that managers are the ones who are in the best position to achieve that.
24. How did the author feel when the band he loved changed its style?
A. He was upset. B. He was carefree.
C. He was hopeful of their success. D. He was confused about the reason.
25. What does the underline word “eliminating” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Making up for. B. Getting rid of. C. Making use of. D. Getting used to.
26. What does the author think helps artists win super fans?
A. Having great talent. B. Being true to themselves.
C. Writing songs people like. D. Communicating with listeners.
27. What might the author be now?
A. A pop singer. B. A band director. C. An artist manager. D. An educational researcher.
C
A teenager needs to have a sense of independence in their life to feel secure(安全的). To some teenagers independence means a lot to them and I think that some parents don’t allow their teenagers enough independence.
Independence has something to do with freedom. Some kids are not allowed to go anywhere alone, and the only thing their schedule includes is going to school, coming home, going to sleep, and repeating the process the next day. Parents tend to be afraid that their kids can get hurt if they go outside into the world. But if parents control their kids too much, they may never learn to live on their own. The best way for a teenager to lean lesson is through experience. I think it is good for teenagers to have freedom.
Teenagers’ lack of freedom can also stop them from having good friendship at school. Some might say this is a good thing, because it helps them focus more on their school work. I argue that this can only discourage them not to do their school work. Some parents do not allow their children to be around their friends outside the school, thinking that this will get them into trouble. But I don’t think so. Instead, isn’t this a good reason for parents to get their children a cellphone? Cellphones allow teenagers to stay in touch with their parents, and communicate with friends.
Privacy(隐私)is another issue between parents and their teenagers. Teenagers tend to enjoy relaxation by themselves in their own room This also gives them a sense of independence. It often annoys teenagers when their parents enter their room when they are not home. I know that my mom always goes in my room when I’m not home, and this has brought me to the point where I have asked many times to get a lock on my door.
28. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. Kids have a dull schedule every day.
B. Parents allow their kids no freedom.
C. Kids know how to live independently.
D. It helps teenagers a lot to have freedom.
29. Which of the following statements is true in the opinion of the author?
A. It is unnecessary for a kid to have a cellphone.
B. Good friendships between kids harm their school work.
C. Parents should make it easy for kids to communicate with their friends.
D. Kids should center on the school work without friends outside the school.
30. How do teenagers usually feel when their parents enter their rooms in their absence?
A. Disappointed. B. Frightened. C. Angry. D. Calm.
31. Why does the author hope to have her door locked?
A. To keep her father from reading her dairy.
B. To prevent her mother entering her room.
C. To protect herself from any harm.
D. To stop thieves from going in.
D
Children whose minds wander (走神) might have sharper brains, a research suggests.
A study has found that people who let their minds wander easily have more “working memory”, giving them the ability to hold a lot of information in their heads and control it cleverly.
Children at school need this type of memory on a daily basis for a variety of tasks, such as following teachers’ instructions or remembering dictated sentences. During the study, volunteers were asked to perform one simple task during which researchers kept asking if their minds were wandering. In the end, volunteers measured their working memory capacity (容量) by their ability to remember a series of letters mixed with simple maths questions.
Daniel Levinson, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the United States, said that those with higher working memory capacity reported “more mind wandering during these simple tasks”, but their performance did not deteriorate.
The results, published online in the journal Psychological Science, appear to make sure that the former research found working memory allows humans to deal with many thoughts at the same time.
Dr Jonathan Smallwood, of the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Science in Leipzig, Germany, said, “What this study seems to suggest is that, when the tasks aren’t very difficult, people with additional working memory capacity use them effectively to think about other things besides what they’re doing.”
Working memory capacity is also connected with general measures of intelligence, such as reading comprehension and IQ scores. Dr Smallwood added, “Our results suggest the sorts of planning that people do quite often in daily life — when they are on the bus, when they are cycling to work, when they are in the shower — are probably supported by working memory.”
32. What did the researchers ask the volunteers to do during the study?
A. solve some difficult maths problems
B. retell some dictated sentences
C. follow the teacher’s instructions
D. carry out one simple task
33. What does the underlined word “deteriorate” in the fourth paragraph probably mean?
A. become worse B. become better
C. improve quickly D. improve gradually
34. According to the study, working memory ________.
A. prevents people from remembering dictated sentences
B. causes people’s minds to wander more easily
C. allows people to consider more things at the same time
D leads to people’s worse performance during work
35. What’s the text mainly about?
A. How the working memory works in the daily life.
B. Wandering minds might have brighter brains.
C. Why people’s minds wander while working.
D. Working ability can be improved by wandering minds.
E
You are given many opportunities in life to choose to be a victim or creator. When you choose to be a victim, the world is a cold and difficult place. “They” did things to you which caused all of your pain and suffering. “They” are wrong and bad, and life is terrible as long as “they” are around. Or you may blame yourself for all your problems, thus internalizing(内化)your victimization. The truth is, your life is likely to stay that way as long as you feel a need to blame yourself or others.
Those who choose to be creators look at life quite differently. They know there are people who might like to control their lives, but they don’t let this get in the way. They know they have their weaknesses, yet they don’t blame themselves when they fail. Whatever happens, they have choice in the matter. They believe their dance with each moment of life is a gift and that storms are a natural part of life which can bring the rain needed for their growth.
Victims and creators live in the same physical world and deal with many of the same physical realities, yet their experience of life is worlds apart. Victims relish(沉溺)in anger, guilt, and other emotions that cause others——and even themselves——to feel like victims, too. Creators willingly choose love, inspiration, and other qualities which inspire not only themselves, but all around them. Both victims and creators always have choice to determine the direction of their lives.
In reality, all of us play the victim or the creator at various points in our lives. One person, on losing a job or a special relationship, may feel as if it is the end of the world and sink into terrible suffering for months, years, or even a lifetime. Another with the same experience may choose to first experience the sadness, then accept the loss and soon move on to be a powerful creative force in his life.
In every moment and every situation, you can choose to have fuller, richer life by setting a clear goal to change the victim within, and by inviting into your life the powerful creator that you are.
36. What does the word “they” in Paragraph1 probably refer to?
A. People and things around you. B. Opportunities and problems.
C. Creators and their choices. D. Victims and their sufferings.
37. According to Paragraph 2, creators ________.
A. seem willing to experience failures in life
B. own the ability to predict future life
C. deal with ups and downs of life wisely
D. have the ability to create something new
38. The examples mentioned in Paragraph 4 show that ________.
A. strong connection to sufferings in life pulls people into victims.
B. people need family support to deal with challengers in life.
C. it takes creators quite a long time to get rid of their pains.
D. one’s experiences determine his attitude toward life.
39. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To make the readers know what victims and creators are.
B. To explain the relationship between victims and creators.
C. To suggest the change from victims to creators.
D. To measure victims against creators.

【答案】Dear John,
I am really sorry to hear that you feel bad after entering high school. I’d like to talk about it with you.
In fact, in your high school, your classmates are also new there and facing the same problem so you don’t have to worry too much about it. There is also something that you can do to change this situation. First, try to invite some of your classmates to take part in some activities together after school. This will help you understand each other better. Then, help your classmates when they are in trouble and turn to them for help when you have difficulty.
I believe, you will make many new friends and have a happy school life there.
Yours,
Li Hua

As I know, you are always interested in Chinese culture and want to learn some Chinese. Therefore, I suggest that you choose Chinese daily dialogues as a start, like greeting people, asking for directions and bargaining for souvenirs which can help you a lot during your trip.
Learning a foreign language needs great efforts. I’d like to be your teacher and send you an e-book with my teaching schedule later. Besides, let’s have an online class on the Internet every weekend, through which I will try my best to make your learning easier and surely you can speak some fluent Chinese before your arrival.
