Yu Can Be a Wrld Memry Champin!
Every year, peple with amazing memry skills cmpete in an event called the Wrld Memry Champinships. The tasks require huge pwers f memry retentin: remembering the rder f 52 cards in a deck (副); memrizing the names f 110 peple after lking at their pictures; and ther tasks. Cmpleting any f these tasks may nt seem easy fr the nrmal persn, but scientific prf seems t shw that even smene with nrmal skills can, thrugh
training, imprve his r her memry skills and becme a memry champin.
One memry champin explained his methds f recalling the rder f the cards in a deck. Firstly, he cnnected a persn, an actin and a thing with each card. Fr example, the king f hearts is Elvis Presley, eating, a chclate sandwich. The three f spades ( 黑 桃 ) is Rcky Balba, bxing, Madisn Square Garden. The ten f hearts is William Shakespeare, writing Hamlet, a brken pen. Take a persn frm the first card, an actin frm the secnd card, and a thing frm the third card s that any grup f three cards creates a vivid (生动的) image that is easier t recall. Fr example: king-ten-three becmes Elvis Presley writing Hamlet in Madisn Square Garden – a memrable image.
Still, even having created images fr each grup f three cards, it is difficult t keep them in rder. This is dne using the lci methd, r what sme call a “Memry Palace” – a term created by Frances Yates in his 1966 bk The Art f Memry – which is a simple but effective methd discvered by the ancient Greeks.
But are there peple with naturally amazing memries? The winner f the 2011 Wrld Memry Champinships was 21-year-ld Chinese Wang Feng. He said he had a “nrmal memry as a child,” and n special talent except fr the hard wrk and attentin t detail.
Althugh many still think that peple have either gd r bad memries frm birth, that need nt be true. By using the methds f gruping, cnnecting with vivid images, and the lci methd, we can all imprve ur memries. Wh knws – yu might even becme the next Wrld Memry Champin!
    Accrding t Paragraph 2, ten-king-three can create an image f .
William Shakespeare eating in Madisn Square Garden
Hamlet eating a chclate sandwich with a brken pen
Rcky Balba writing Hamlet with a brken pen
Elvis Presley bxing in Madisn Square Garden
Why is lci methd useful fr memrizing the cards?
It cnnects the images with their time rder.
It rerganizes the cards t build a vivid palace.
It uses the terms frm a bk t create a new image.
It helps memrize the rder f the three-card grups.
What’s the writer’s main purpse in writing this passage?
T praise the winners f the Wrld Memry Champinship.
T help peple win the Wrld Memry Champinship.
T shw a gd memry is mre a matter f training.
    T explain methds f remembering a deck f cards.
    D
In recent years, there has been a general directin fr new buildings t be mre envirnmentally friendly. These buildings use energy and water nicely, reducing waste and pllutin. Hwever, setting up slar panels and water recycling systems invlves higher csts than in a traditinal building. The questin is whether peple are willing t pay these additinal csts.
One schl in the UK has shwn us that envirnmental principles (原则) are just as imprtant t small prjects as t large nes. Hwe Dell primary schl has its wn wind turbine (风力发电机) t prduce energy, uses rainwater t wash tilets, and uses desks made frm recycled materials. These envirnmental parts f the building are relatively inexpensive, and ver the life f the building, shuld prvide a large return fr the early csts. They als perfrm as valuable teaching materials when educating students abut the envirnment.
Anther example in the UK is a private huse in Wales, knwn as the “Hbbit Huse”. It is made frm wd and the walls are made frm straw. Slar panels prvide electricity fr lighting and electrical equipment. Water is supplied directly frm a nearby river and is als cllected frm the rain fr use in garden t avid wasting clean water. Huses like this ne are green because they d nt use il r gas, but instead use renewable energy surces, such as slar r wind pwer.
Hwever, critics f these kinds f envirnmentally friendly building say that while they may be gd fr the envirnment, there are practical prblems with their affrdability, as they are t expensive t becme a methd f cnstructin ( 建 筑 ) that can be widely used. There are further wrries abut their lng-term efficiency. Nt much energy can be prduced by slar panels in the UK, and nt every lcatin has natural water surce. In rder t pay fr envirnmentally friendly cnstructin and prduce an affrdable building, cmprmises have
t be made. These may be that the building will have t be smaller r made f less durable materials and with less energy-hungry technlgy.
The benefits fr cnstructing green buildings are clear. The United Natins Envirnment Prgramme believes that the cnstructin accunts fr ( 占 据 ) 30-40% f energy use in the wrld. We need t reduce this energy use fr the gd f the Earth. Hwever, it remains t be seen whether we are nw able t accept the cst and practical prblems f prducing and living in envirnmentally friendly buildings.
What can we learn frm Paragraph 2?
Peple are nt willing t pay fr green buildings.
It’s affrdable fr big buildings t set up slar panels.
Wind turbines can prduce enugh energy fr lighting.
Envirnmental principles are meaningful t big and small prjects.
The wrd “cmprmises” in Paragraph 4 prbably means “ ”.
    A. measurementsB. agreementsC. suggestinsD. inventins
The writer prbably agrees that green buildings .
    can nt be cnstructed widely
may nt be as green as they seem
are t expensive t be cnstructed
are wrthy thugh there are prblems
Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
    Are Green Buildings T Cstly?
D Green Buildings Last fr Lng?
Green Buildings: A New Methd f Cnstructin
Green Buildings: A Better Way t Prduce Energy

    HUTONG
Every year thusands f turists cme t China. They cme t see the great sights f the Great Wall and the Frbidden City but ften it is the hutngs that leave the strngest impressin(印象), as they ffer travelers an unusual view int Beijing’s past. Hutngs cnnect curtyards f traditinal huses and are a feature f ancient Chinese building. Beijing’s hutngs
are especially famus, hwever, as there are thusands f them. Nwadays, the wrd “hutng” has cme t mean mre than just the alleys (小巷) , which cnnect the curtyards. It als refers t the curtyards themselves and even the cmmunities.
Mst f Beijing’s hutngs were built between the 13th and 19th centuries during the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. T help them manage the city, the Emperrs ( 皇 帝 )during these perids rganized different areas f Beijing and had huses built arund curtyards. The Emperr’s hme, the Frbidden City, was in the centre f Beijing and the hmes f the nbles ( 贵 族 ) and rich peple were in hutngs clsest t the palace. Nrmal peple lived in the hutngs further away frm the palace.
By cnnecting peple’s hmes, the hutngs in fact cnnected peple’s lives, whether the lives f the rich r the lives f the pr. Because the huses were built facing each ther arund curtyards, the families wh lived there were an imprtant part f each ther’s lives. They supprted each ther when help was needed and shared the happiness and sadness f everyday life. Because f the hutngs, curtyards were jined tgether fr miles arund creating a netwrk f peple wrking, playing and living tgether – a real cmmunity.
Hutngs are still an imprtant part f Beijing’s life and it is nt surprising that turists lve the hutngs. They can walk up Sanmia Street, which dates back 900 years, wander dwn Dngjiaminxiang – the lngest hutng at 3km, r squeeze thrugh Qianshi – the narrwest ( 窄 )at nly 40cm wide! The hutngs nt nly cnnect Beijing’s streets and cmmunities, but als its past and present, shwing that Beijing is truly an ancient yet mdern city.
    What d hutngs ffer travelers?
Besides the alleys, what des the wrd “hutng” refer t nwadays?
When were mst f Beijing’s hutngs built?
What is Paragraph 3 mainly abut?
    What is special abut Dngjiaminxiang?
