Teresa Faiello was driving in rush-hour traffic when “stars and blind spots” filled her vision(视觉). Robbed of her surround vision, a sharp pain sending from behind her eyes to the back of her head, she had to pull over.

    The worst migraine(偏头疼)

That was more than twenty years ago. Faiello clearly recalls the worst migraine headache she suffered in her 52 years and how much it scared her. She parked on the side of the road for 20 minutes until she could see well enough to get home. “I was done for the rest of the day,” she said. “I couldn’t do anything.”

    ________

That’s what life is like for migraine sufferers. They live with the constant fear and stress of not knowing what could lead to another painful, days-long period—or when. They can experience weak pain, sickness and sensitivity(敏感) to lights and sounds that could last for days.

“So many people think it’s just a headache,” said Dr. Clifton Gooch, chair of the neurology(神经) department at the University of South Florida and founder of its Headache Center. “But migraine is one of the leading causes of disability in the U. S. and worldwide.”

    A look at the numbers

Migraines are the third most common illness in the world, according to the Migraine Research Foundation. Migraine and headache disorders are also the fifth highest cause of disability among ages 25 to 49 and second highest among ages 10 to 24, according to a study published by the Global Burden of Disease Study.

    The effects

The pain typically happens from one side of the head and can be doubled by light and sound. While some sufferers receive no warning, others experience aura-sensory(感觉先兆) changes such as blind spots in vision, tingling() in the face or limbs. It is considered a chronic(慢性的) condition when it lasts at least 15 days, a month, or for three months. The common causes include changing weather, stress, certain foods and some other uncertain things.

Anyone who walked into a restaurant during the pandemic knows that the QR code is a contact-less(无接触) way to look at a menu. But the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning customers that they need to be extra careful if they’re sent a digitally readable square known as a QR code.

One victim told the BBB that they received a cheating letter about student loan. It contained a QR code that appeared to link to the official Studentaid. gov website. The QR code also helped the letter, which was part of a cheating, appear official.

As the QR codes have become more commonly used, the BBB notes that it has received reports of scammers using the system to their advantage across the United States. “This is much like a phishing scam,” Laura, director of marketing for Eastern Michigan, said. “Just like clicking links, you have to be careful what website you’re opening on your smartphone. If you’ve never heard of the organization or the website where the QR code is supposed to go to, that’s a huge red flag.” She said the use of the QR code by scammers offers another way to steal personal information or get you to download malware(恶意软件) onto your smartphone.

The scammers can now send messages to one or all people in a user’s address book, or even send a payment to where it cannot be recovered, according to the U. S. Army Major Cybercrime Unit. “In some scams, the QR code takes you to a phishing website, where you are required to enter your personal information for scammers to steal,” the BBB warned. “Other times, scammers use QR codes to payment apps or follow a bad social media account.”

Scams can differ, but the scammers want you to scan the code right away. What you need to do, though, is to step back and make sure any information is legitimate(合法的) before you scan the code. Phone the friend or coworker directly to see what they might have sent, and make sure the sender wasn’t hacked.

Adam Levin, an expert, says it’s a good rule of thumb to turn your smartphone off and restart it regularly. “Many forms of malware that live in your smartphone, such as spyware, depend on the device never being turned off.” Levin said.

    30. What does the writer want to tell us in the first two paragraphs?

    A. The QR code is a contact-less way to look at a menu.

    B. The QR codes can help some letters appear official.

    C. The QR codes now open new doors for scammers.

    D. The QR code is a new way of payments.

    31. The “red flag” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.

    A. warning B. loss C. surprise D. mistake

    32. The writer probably agrees that ________.

    A. there are some hidden dangers in QR codes

    B. we should keep our smartphones off at night

    C. the QR codes have led to phishing scamming

    D. we should trust every QR code from our friends

    33. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?

    A. To tell us not to download malware.

    B. To tell us to keep away from smartphones.

    C. To tell us to remember to restart our smartphones regularly.

    D. To tell us to be careful of what we are scanning with smartphones.

    第二部分

    四、阅读表达(每题2分,共10分)

    阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

    Hear Me Roar

Are you a tiger? According to the Chinese Zodiac (生肖), people born in the Year of the Tiger are kind and energetic. That may be true, but those characteristics are not generally related to real tigers. While we admire the handsome animals, we also fear them. But there are lessons everyone can learn from the lives of these amazing cats.

Tigers seldom feed in groups in the wild, but when they do, males allow females and cubs to eat first. In other words, big, strong male(雄性的) tigers wait their turn and think of others before themselves. We, too, should consider the needs of others before we act.

Tigers can also teach us how to be strategic (有策略的). These smart animals study a situation before acting. They hardly attack prey (猎物) on sight but will consider their strategy several times, if necessary, before rushing forward.

Tigers go after large prey so they have big ideas. Despite all their planning, tigers only end up with a meal once out of every 12 attempts (尝试) to catch something. Yet they do not give up; they keep trying until they succeed.

Most kinds of cats avoid water, but tigers enjoy water and are very capable swimmers. This love of water allows them to live in many different environments including forests, grasslands and mangrove swamps. Learn from the tiger, and decide for yourself what you can and cannot do. Try things that others consider impossible. Explore surprising places.

Tigers’ love of water also allows them to hunt and fight crocodiles. This kind of animals are extremely difficult to kill. Usually, tigers kill by biting the neck of their prey. But a crocodile’s neck has a thick coat of armor. Tigers are not put off by this. Instead, they change their strategy and attack the creature’s weak areas like its stomach or eyes. Like the tiger, don’t let difficult situations stop you from succeeding. Try more than one method if your usual strategy isn’t successful.

Tigers are as different as people are. The fur of every tiger has a unique pattern. So be yourself and show off your stripes. Take a few hints from the tiger, and let others hear you roar this year.

    34. What are people born in the Year of the Tiger like?

    ________________

    35. What do male tigers do when they feed in groups?

    ________________

    36. How many attempts do tigers end up with a meal?

Amy ____16____ for the fresh air and the flowers, but her work must first be done. Steadily she laid down her broad hem, and had finished the second side of her napkin before her sister came back.

“Had you not better finish your sewing?” said Amy, “It must be near dinner time now.” “Oh! I can finish it in two minutes, only I want to look at that story, which Tom told us was so amusing.” Lizzy replied impatiently.

“But if you are late?” murmured Amy.

“No ____18____ of that!” cried Lizzy, “No one is so likely to be late as a slow little creature like you!”

Poor Amy made no reply, but quietly she worked on. Lizzy was soon so ____19____ in her story that she forgot all about her work, till shocked by the sound of the bell.

“Can it be dinner-time!” she cried, “Oh dear, and my napkin is not hemmed! And yours?”

“It is just finished.” said Amy.

“It is just like ‘The Hare and the Tortoise’.” thought Lizzy, who had enough of sense to ____20____ a lesson.

It’s hard to live a really fulfilled life with usually worrying. Migraine is a chronic illness that we deal with monthly, weekly, daily. We should be actively battling it ourselves because no one knows what we’re going through.

    27. Why does the writer talk about Teresa’s experience in Paragraph 1?

    A. To lead in the topic of the passage. B. To explain the writer’s purpose.

    C. To introduce a conclusion. D. To start a story.

    28. Which of the following would be the best heading for Paragraph 3 and 4?

    A. More than just a headache B. Constant fear and stress

    第二部分

    本部分共6题,共20分。根据题目要求,完成相应任务。

Tigers go after large prey, so they have big ideas.
